Pet safety in disaster n by Meg Fulford

"W

hat About Waldo?" is a reminder to devise 'pet preparedness plans' as well as thinking about family in emergency situations. A Civil Defence initiative, it is a timely reminder to prepare all of the household in the event of disaster, such as flooding or earthquake. As part of the promotion, a poster design competition is open for children, encouraging them to get in and play a part in acknowledging pet safety. Grey District Council librarian Jodie Wainwright has been nominated as the 'local animal welfare co-ordinator' for the Grey District Civil Defence. With a degree in animal sciences, and studying her masters in animal welfare, Miss Wainwright was the ideal candidate to front the campaign with Waldo. "The idea is to be ready in case of having to evacuate, in which case you would have a 'grab bag' to last maybe a day or two, and have a more substantial one in case of being cut off, which would have supplies for up to two weeks." The 'What About Waldo?' logo and accompanying leaflet was designed and created by local artist Jay Worling, while the project also includes experienced volunteers from across the animal sector including animal control, SPCA West Coast, MPI, dog groomers, local kennels/ cattery owners and other local businesses. They have also launched an exciting competition for children to design a poster. The deadline for entries is October 31, and entry forms can be picked up at the Grey District Library or Westland Recreation Centre. Waldo, recipient of a 2019 Civic Award from the Grey District Council, has visited several primary schools in the area this term accompanied by owner Kate Shannon. The visits teach children what they need to put in their 'pet preparedness packs', and hopes to visit more schools once the Coast returns to level 1.
