Buller collective to exhibit in Canterbury by Rose O’Connor-Neilsen in Westport
‘C
ut, Twist and Purl,’ a team of four artists is set to hit the catwalk soon, with their creation, ‘The
Warrior.’ Tania Hammond from northern Buller has joined her sister Yvonne of Motueka and friends Almond
Marree and Tama Kraal of Inangahua in an artistic collective. They have entered Creative Fibre — Group Runway Challenge at a spinners, weavers and wool craft festival being held in Christchurch this week at Chateau on the Park. The annual festival is a gathering and AGM for spinners, weavers and wool crafters and held in a different region each year.
This year is the first the festival has held a group runway challenge and 21 groups have entered. As individual artists, Cut, Twist and Purl are all heavily involved in art but have never entered a contest or attended the festival before. Tania Hammond said that it had taken a bit to co-ordinate the costume with the times they had to met up to dress the model “few and
far between.” They had communicated a lot through social media and with their individual artistic strengths believe the completed garment is “an organic synthesis” of the four contributing members. The Warrior combines a woven flax shield, leather and felted wool skirt made by Yvonne Hammond, a leather Celtic knot necklace and
arm bracer made by her sister, a felted wool helmet and accessories by Marree and Kraal. Tania Hammond said a desire to try leather work gave the inspiration she needed to get started. Marree will model the garment at the festival. The winning team will get to choose a workshop from a Creative Fibres tutor to the value of $1000.
