High school entrepreneurs Riley Fairhall, left, and Ben Giles are in the bouncy castle business. The John Paul II High School Year 13 students, helped by classmate Daniel Cresswell, have been working hard in their business studies class to establish their first real-life business – Bounce Hire. They chose saw a gap in the market on the West Coast for bouncy castle hire and decided to fill it. They launched their business at the Matariki Festival in Hokitika and again at their school's open evening. Riley and Ben said it was proving to be a “fun magnet“ for both young and young at heart. Their bouncy castle can be hired for groups and children's parties, for youngsters up to 12 years. “However, we are flexible and will hire it out to older people, but there would be more restrictions when it is being used, for example the number of people who can be bouncing on it at a time.“ They can be contacted through their website Bounce Hire Greymouth. “There was such a variety of different ideas. It was such a great range with not a lot of repetition,” she said. The event is a major charity fundraiser for Homebuilders West Coast, which is still without a permanent home-base since the July 2021 floods. Mrs Diskin said the event attracted a huge crowd. “I'd estimate over 360 attended which is probably the most we have ever had. Westport people were ready for an event like this after all they have been through. It is probably the largest indoor event the town now holds.”

Mrs Diskin was disappointed that just three entered the secondary section, which was won by Leelawadee Meyer and Eloise Brown and their 'Plague of Moths' entry. “It would be great if we could attract more entries in this age group.”

Building healthy soil is as simple as soiling your undies. This National Gardening Week plant a pair of undies to find out how healthy your soil is. Burying 100% cotton underwear for a couple of months is an easy and effective way of measuring soil health. The more threadbare the undies, the more microorganisms in the soil, meaning the healthier the soil.
GardeningNationalWeek–soilyourundies!
The call is out for New Zealanders to soil their undies and be in to win this National Gardening Week. The process is simple: 1. Plant a pair of new, cotton underwear horizontally about 3 inches deep in the site you're curious about and mark the spot. 2. Wait at least 60 days. This gives your soil microbes time to work their magic! Then dig the undies back up. Send in a photo of your 'harvest' with name, address and phone number to soilyourundies@yates.co.nz between October 11 and 18 and be in to win some great prizes for the most soiled undies, the biggest undies and the oddest undies. Plus every entrant receives a free packet of Yates veggie seeds. Yates spokeswoman Fiona Arthur says soiling your undies is a fun way to make sure you have got the best soil for optimum growing conditions this spring and“Creatingsummer.healthy soil is as easy as feeding your soil with organic matter such as composted food scraps, grass clippings, leaves, sheep or horse poo and seaweed. Then add blood and bone to fertilise, improve soil structure and provide natural organic nutrients and lime encourages decomposition of organic matter and earthworm activity. You'll not only have great growing conditions for your plants but you'll be helping nature and reducing your carbon footprint as healthy soil banks carbon,” says Ms Arthur.

“My personal trainer at the gym told me that it is important to be aware of your own body,” Angela says. After noticing discomfort when using gym equipment, Angela decided to carry out a self-examination while in the shower and discovered a hard lump. Concerned, she rang her medical centre and made an appointment to see her doctor. Within two weeks Angela was seen by a consultant surgeon at Te Nikau Hospital in Greymouth and was given an examination under general anaesthetic.
About the Cancer Society
To find out more or donate to the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day appeal, visit www. daffodilday.org.nz
Angela Bell credits a comment from her personal trainer at the Bodyworks Gym in Hokitika for starting her on her wellness journey.
The Cancer Society also funds cancer research and health promotion programmes aimed at reducing cancer risk.
“While Daffodil Day is our major fundraiser for the year, it is much more than that,” Ms Coom says.
“You don't have to worry about getting a park,” he says. Angela says the main side effects of her treatment have been nausea and fatigue. “Some days you're lucky to put one foot in front of the other,” she says.
Daffodil Day helps Cancer Society provide local support After last year's Daffodil Day street appeal was unable to go ahead because of Covid restrictions, the Cancer Society is looking forward to getting out and about around the West Coast for this year's event this Friday.
Angela's cancer journey
Angela's cancer was a rare type of squamous cell carcinoma. Further investigations including a PET scan and a colonoscopy showed that the cancer had been detected early and had not spread.
Chief executive of the Cancer Society's Canterbury-West Coast division Nicola Coom says the organisation is reliant on the generosity of the community to continue to fund its “Daffodilservices.Dayis hugely important for us, it accounts for approximately 40% of our annual revenue so it really determines the level of support we are able to provide the community,” Ms Coom says.
“It is an opportunity for us to let people know about our services and also for people to reflect on their own experience of cancer and pay tribute to those who've passed away because of cancer.”
“My oncologist was surprised,” she says. “When I found out the cancer had not metastasised, I cried,” Angela says. Following her cancer diagnosis, Angela collapsed while at home. She had also been experiencing nausea and it turned out that these symptoms were nothing to do with her cancer but the result of a previously undiagnosed gallstone the size of a golf ball. Angela had to have her gallbladder removed, which meant the start of her cancer treatment was deferred by several weeks.
Although Angela's husband Craig had had his own cancer experience back in 2015, the couple said they “had no idea the Cancer Society did what they did.”
For both Angela and Craig talking about their cancer experiences has been very important.Theyare also both strong advocates for being aware of any changes in your body. “Don't bury your head in the sand,” Angela says. “Take on board what the oncologist and the team tell you.”
“I've been told that your body works harder during treatment than during a workout,” sheShesays.says she has been told that she has an 80 to 85% chance of a full recovery. Angela has nicknamed her tumour “George“, and she says her friends ask her how George is behaving when they check in on her “You'vewell-being.gottohave a laugh,” she says.
The Cancer Society provides information, practical and emotional support for people with any kind of cancer through its network of local community-based centres. The kind of support offered depends on the needs of the individual but includes accommodation in Christchurch for those travelling from out of town for treatment; assistance with transport to cancer-related appointments; and help with practical items such as turbans and wigs.

“When I woke up someone was patting my arm and telling me that I had a tumour,” she says.
“The cleaners come in and change the bed,” sheCraigsays.was able to travel over from Hokitika to spend the weekends with Angela at Daffodil Lodge. “I'm lucky in the job I'm in,” Craig says. “I've been able to take annual leave and my employer (Westland Milk Products) has been veryAngelasupportive.”usedthe Cancer Society shuttle service to transport her from Daffodil Lodge to the hospital for her treatment and back again. Craig describes this service as “awesome.”
Angela says Maree Yaxley, who works for the Cancer Society's Canterbury-West Coast division and is based in Hokitika, was “very, veryMareehelpful“.provided the couple with information about the National Travel Assistance scheme and told them about the Cancer Society's Christchurch accommodation facilities, Daffodil Lodge and Daffodil House. Angela stayed at Daffodil Lodge in Riccarton while having radiation and chemotherapy treatment and describes the Cancer Society services as “absolutely brilliant“.
“The number of cancer diagnoses each year in New Zealand is predicted to double by 2040, which means that demand for our services is going to grow, and we want to be in a position where we can respond to that.

Book tribute to Coast's first All Black
Much of the money was repaid, Colin adds. Colin remembers his grandfather taking him as a 12-year-old to a river-based gold dredge. Henry and a group of his business partners had built it to sift through the river gravels in and around Hokitika. He recalls a time when Henry laid a bar of gold on the table saying, 'if you can pick that up using just two fingers it's yours,' knowing full well that he had set poor Colin an impossible task. Toby says it was stories such as these that he wants to help pass on to younger generations. He has already begun work on Fittall the Flyer, set in World War II. “That is my passion: to preserve these tales. There's bound to be many more out there.” Information on the books' availability is on the website backintheday.co.nz

The commissioners are, of course, no longer. But the need for mana whenua representation persisted. Hence our bill which makes mana whenua representation permanent. This is a testament to the relationship between the council and Ngai Tahu and their dedication to continually improving it. It’s also a rebuke to the regressive forces who think that the Treaty partnership is meaningless. Under the bill Ngai Tahu bring their collective knowledge and responsibilities as kaitiaki of the air, waters, land, and coast to the council. In the end, democracy is made stronger because more voices are heard at the table. At this point I should say that this bill is unique to Canterbury. But it’s one part of a trend toward a more formal partnership between iwi and local government. For example, dozens of councils have implemented Maori seats and iwi forums over the last 12 months in an effort to ensure that more voices, not fewer, are heard around their council tables. This is in recognition that local government works better when it represents the interests of the entire community - including the tangata whenua community. This is a model that could work on the Coast. But it’s up to every community to decide what works best. Canterbury has its model. Places like Waikato and the Bay of Plenty have their’s. But the principle remains the same. Iwi have a stake in local government as kaitiaki of their ancestral airways, waterways, and land. That means they have responsibilities and often the best means of discharging those responsibilities is via local government.
No matter where in the country you were over the last month, the weather was wild. In Wellington slips and a rough harbour closed roads across the region. And in Te Waipounamu, from the Coast down to Otago, snow, slips, and flooding closed bridges and highways. To make matters worse, temperatures dropped in the last week too. I hope you’re all getting through this rough season in one warm, dry piece. No matter the weather work continues at Parliament. This month I was privileged to sponsor the Canterbury Regional Council (Ngai Tahu Representation) Bill through its third and final reading. This was a landmark occasion for Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu who, under the bill, enjoy the power to select and appoint two mana whenua representatives to the Canterbury Regional Council. This is a landmark occasion for the uri of Ngai Tahu too who, as collective, can exercise their stake in selecting their representatives.Thisdidn’t come without some regressive, and sometimes racist, opposition. I found that disappointing because it was, in fact, the John Keyled National government that was responsible for first implementing iwi representation on the Canterbury Regional Council. When the former Prime Minister’s government appointed commissioners to the Canterbury Regional Council they included manawhenua commissioners as well. That foresight helped strengthen the relationship between the council and Ngai Tahu, improving the council’s insight into everything from resource management decisions to the needs of the community.
A TEMPORARY village opposite Westport township to house July 2021 flood victims is under way.The Government's first temporary homes arrived in Westport last week – just as more bad weather hit. The Temporary Accommodation Service (TAS) houses arrived to a high and dry site on Alma Road, on a terrace on the south bank of the Buller River.
Housing village begins
As at August 14, there are currently 29 households who are placed in TAS accommodation. A further seven households are not currently in TAS accommodation but have registered a future need. Of this, 13 households are in motels; 10 households in TAS portable cabins that are on site on their properties, and six households are in TAS procured houses.“Based on current registrations with TAS, we estimate around 18 households will still require TAS support as of October 2022 which is when the Alma Road village is expected to be completed, pending the consent process. This is an estimated number and can change for a number of factors, including the repair progress of individual households,” Ms Shanahan said.
Aucklander Toby Butland has recently published a children's book based on a tale passed down to him by his father Colin, of a Hokitika goldminer and rugby legend. What it Takes to Wear Black, tells the story of Toby's great-grandfather Henry Butland, who was selected to play rugby for New Zealand in 1893. Colin, a resident of Ryman's Lynfield Village, says his grandfather Henry Butland was a proud West Coaster, a goldminer and a real character. The illustrated volume reflects a time when life was different, travel more difficult and a period before the national team had been renamed as the All Blacks. In 1893 Henry, aged 21, was chosen for a national team set to tour New South Wales. This was just a year after the formation of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union, . Toby, in the book, has added in details of a late 19th century world that most younger children would not know much about. With illustrations from Katharine Hall, it is for children of a young age. It has plenty of points of interest, including the fact that Henry made a 250km journey to Lyttelton, including a trek across the Southern Alps, just in time to board the ship to Australia.

Colin says Henry was also a great supporter of others who had found themselves in difficult circumstances on the West Coast. “He financed a lot of gold prospectors up in the hills. They may not have had enough money to feed themselves … he looked after that.”

This shouldn’t be controversial and, in Canterbury and many other parts of New Zealand, I’m glad it’s not. Mauri ora!

Keeping children warm at night
hen the winter chill settles in, adults layer up, snuggle up and disappear under a mountain of duvets and blankets at night to keep warm. The kids, however, are a little more unaware of their surroundings once slumber kicks in and have an infuriating habit of kicking off the covers and twisting PJs around until the cold air wakes them up. And then suddenly they're in your bed, putting their cold feet on your back and hogging all the blankets!
Duvets have a habit of sliding off onto the floor in the middle of the night. You can buy grips with a strap that goes underneath the mattress to keep them in place. Or simply place a sheet or blanket cross-wise on the bottom half of the bed and tuck it in on both sides.
1. Heating the room Obviously the best course of action is to keep your child's room at a comfortable temperature. An efficient heating system is a worthwhile investment, especially one that heats your entire home. However, this is not always affordable or practical for family homes. Other options for heating bedrooms include panel heaters, which provide a background warmth for a low cost, oil heaters, and electric heaters. Remember to follow all safety precautions with heaters and choose ones with a thermostat. A programmeable timer can help to keep control of the temperature and reduce heating costs.
The World Health Organisation recommends that our homes be at a minimum temperature of 18degC, or 20degC for homes with young children, elderly or ill people.
OVER 1000 West Coast homes have been retrofitted with insulation as part of the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme.Thescheme is administered by EECA (Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority) and offers eligible homeowners 80% of the total cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation, and up to 80% of the cost of an approved heater. In many regions, including the West Coast, local community funders offer additional grants to make the cost to homeowners even lower or no cost at all, EECA says. On the West Coast, Community Energy Action and Development West Coast have provided additional funding and helped the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme to deliver retrofits to hundreds of families. In total, since the start of the programme in 2018, it has funded 1138 insulation retrofits, 181 heatpumps and two low-emissions wood burners on the West Coast. The Government announced as part of this year's budget that funding for the programme would be extended until June 2024. For further details, and to check whether they are eligible, homeowners can visit www. warmerkiwihomes.govt.nz
4. Keep the cold out Installing thermal curtains on windows and external doors will help to keep the cold out and weatherstripping any gaps will stop draughts. Insulation can also make a huge difference to the room's temperature.
Only use them with kids who are fully toilet trained. – www.kidspot.co.nz

2. ForNightweartots, sleeping bag-type nightwear is a blessing! They're extremely practical for night-time feeds and changing and are impossible to 'kick off'. The awardwinning Go Go Bags from Merino Kids are used by mums all over the world to keep their little ones cosy. For older kids, onesies are great (we all love those footed jammies, right?!) and they avoid the need for socks which go missing in the middle of the night.

5. Take the chill off A hot water bottle popped under the covers before bedtime can help take the chill off. Just remember not to leave it in the bed, use a cover, and be careful when filling and emptying. Electric blankets are very efficient at heating the bed. Read all safety information before use and do not use a blanket that is damaged. Turn it on about half an hour before bed and turn it off before the child gets in bed (turn it off at the wall and unplug it for added safety).
Though they are a little impractical for those toilet training. You can also use a soft vest/singlet under warm PJs, cosy swaddles for babies, and choose PJs with cuffs to avoid sleeves and legs riding up.
3. Bedding layers Just as we put on layers of clothing on cold days, it is also recommended to layer bedding. This is particularly helpful on those nights when the NZ weather can't really make up its mind! Lay a blanket across the bottom of the kids' beds (past their feet) and fold it like a paper fan so they can just grab the top and pull to add an extra layer if they get cold in the night. Polar fleece sheets are worth the investment - just don't expect anyone to jump out of bed in a hurry the next morning!
Woolen underlays are good at regulating temperatures.

4. Repeat if necessary, although be aware that some darker mildew staining may take up to two weeks to disappear.5.Spray lightly with a mixture of 3 drops Oil of Cloves to 1 litre water and leave to dry completely. This will help prevent the mould from returning.

1. Mix up a solution of 3 drops Oil of Cloves, 1/2 cup vinegar and 5 cups water.2.Get a clean broom, put the leg of a pair of stockings over the head and dip it into your solution.
4. Allow to dry and then repeat. Any remaining light staining from mould or mildew will recede in a couple of weeks. – www.kidspot.co.nz
2. In the morning, gently squeeze out as much water as possible and then hang the item in the sunshine to dry. A salt crust will form.
5. Machine or hand wash the item in warm water with your usual detergent and hang in the sun to dry.
3. While the brush is fizzing, scrub along the grout line with a brisk, up and down motion.
If mould is rampant at your place, take the precautionary steps above to prevent the problem from getting worse and then get ready to clean. There are some moulds that you will never be able to remove once they have taken hold of a fabric or painted wooden surface, but it's always worth a try. Lots of people bleach mould away and then wonder why it always grows back again. Bleach will remove the colour of mould and mildew so you can't see it, but believe me, it's still there. All the health-risks associated with mould (especially for allergy and asthma sufferers) will still be there, whether you can see the mould or not.The only way to really get rid of mould is to kill it, remove it and then take steps to prevent new colonies forming in the same place as the old Rememberones.that breathing in mould can be a serious health risk, especially for asthma sufferers. When cleaning up mould and mildew, wear a face mask and gloves and avoid handling the fungi as much as possible. Wrap up in newspaper and remove any brushed away mould and mildew. Be sure to do an allergy test for any of the products (such as Oil of Cloves) mentioned and do a patch-test on your fabric before you plough straight in. Oil of Cloves is available from the pharmacy, but if you can't get hold of it, try tea-tree oil or eucalyptus oil in its place. Both of these are an excellent natural disinfectant. If you can't get any essential oils, you can use an antibacterial surface spray in place of the essential oil mix.
4. Take the item down off the line and use a soft brush like a clean dustpan brush to remove the salt crust (use a stiff brush like a clean toilet brush for heavy fabrics). Do this over sheets of newspaper so when the mould and mildew comes away with the salt you can wrap the lot up and dispose of it in the bin.
2. Cover the mould with a thin layer of course salt that has been lightly dampened with vinegar and a drop of Oil of Cloves. 3. Leave the salt to sit for a day in the sunshine. 4. Brush the salt and mould off as in step 4 above.

Non-portable, non-washable fabrics such as carpets or outdoor umbrellas
How to fix mouldy grout Grouting around bathroom wall and floor tiles, outdoor patio tiles and pool tiles is a favourite hangout for mould. The grout provides the food source and the environment that tiles exist in provides the water source. Keep tiles as dry as you possibly can - use a squeegie after every shower, let the sunshine in, use an extractor fan, manually dry pool surfaces after swimming and allow free-flowing ventilation whenever you can (keep the lid down on the toilet and the bathroom windows and doors open when not in use).
3. Once dry, leave the salt to sit for at least an hour, preferably longer.
5. Repeat if necessary until all mould and mildew have been removed.
Portable, non-washable fabrics such as teddy bears, suede, leather or silk 1. Lay down several sheets of newspaper and place the mouldy item on top.
3. Repeat steps until all mould has gone.

Two tender reports were tabled at the public excluded session of the council meeting held at the Arahura Marae last week. The regional council manages quarries across the region to supply rating districts with rock, to maintain river and coastal protection work. Both the Camelback and Inchbonnie quarries are strategic rock resources for the West Coast. The council will also supply rock to individual customers in the future.

THE West Coast Regional Council has awarded the operational and management contracts of both the Inchbonnie and Camelback quarries to Rosco Contractors Ltd. The council invited tenders for these contracts in July following a pause in all its quarry operations earlier this year to allow staff to reassess internal processes. Keri Harrison, Tui Creek Consulting, had been engaged to carry out this process. Ms Harrison said three tenders had been received for the Inchbonnie quarry and four tenders for Camelback, with a detailed tender evaluation process

ANZ Bank New Zealand CEO Antonia Watson says paying fees is one of the first barriers families face when deciding if they can register their child to play. “Sport is such an important part of a child's wellbeing, both mentally and physically,” Ms Watson says. “The increased cost of living can put families in a tough position when it comes to managing the household budget. We hope this will help ease some of that pressure and keep more kids playing cricket.” New Zealand Cricket general manager of community cricket Kent Stead says the initiative from ANZ is extremely helpful, and he hopes families who might have thought it not possible for their children to play this season will reconsider thanks to this new initiative.
Happy ending for Rosie

Applications for the ANZ Coin Toss experience, which gives one lucky cricket fan the opportunity to join the captains for the pre-match toss, four tickets to the game and a photo to remember it all, open on August 25. ANZ has been a sponsor of New Zealand Cricket for almost 23 years, injecting more than $1.6 million into community cricket during that time.
W
ANZ is making $50,000 available to families who would benefit from the support, and successful applicants will receive up to $80 towards their fees – which will be provided in the form of a voucher to redeem when registering with New Zealand Cricket. This financial help could be the difference between some kids playing cricket this summer, or not.
ith household budgets feeling the squeeze, ANZ cricket grants will help keep the West Coast's younger players in the game this season by subsidising young club cricket fees.

“This is a generous gesture from ANZ and their support will ensure hundreds of kids won't miss out on the benefits that team sport brings,” Mr Stead says. “After a long hard winter, getting out and enjoying cricket is just what is needed.” Families who may have dismissed the idea of their children playing this summer are invited to apply at www.anzcricketworld. co.nz between August 15 and September 23. A maximum of two children per family can benefit from the subsidy.

WHEN Rosie the foxy mix took fright and ran off, the community and Westland District Council's dog control officer Clare Lomax stopped at nothing to bring her home. Ms Lomax received a phone call from Rosie's distressed owner Jimmy Stevenson, of Woodstock, on Friday, August 12 advising that Rosie, who is 12 years young, deaf and partially sighted had run away. “My first response was to visit the gentleman and get the details about Rosie from him,” says Ms Lomax. “Then I went on a door knock in the surrounding area but couldn't see any sign of Rosie. I kept in touch with him over the weekend and continued unsuccessfully to search for her.” A post was put on to the local lost and found and Hokitika Grapevine
