Treat Week is a week-long extravaganza where every dollar raised helps SPCA rehabilitate animals to give them a second chance at life.

The SPCA is the only charity with the power to protect all animals including prosecuting people under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

“She absolutely loves playing in water and going to the beach, she is a real sweetheart.“What'sholding her back is that she needs a house without small children or cats. She also needs an owner who is strong and firm.

To contribute to SPCA Treat Week, people can drop their baked goods off to the Preston Road shelter after 1pm, Monday, September 26.

“Fences are no object to her but the property doesn't need to be Fort Knox as she should be happy while her owner is home. She will need a kennel and run when the owner goes out

Staff from several local Jobs for Nature projects, including Sustainable Wild Whitebait Fishery and Weed Free Te Tai Poutini, and representatives from key stakeholders celebrated Conservation Week with planting action on Wadeson Island recently. About 70 people planted up to 2000 locally eco-sourced native trees. As the trees grow and mature, they will help to keep the weeds away and return areas to bush. The event was hosted by the Department of Conservation, Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and MBC Environmental. Planters included workers from Westland District Council, West Coast Regional Council, Westland Milk Products and Development West Coast. Recent weeding, planting and track maintenance is all part of a collaborative project lead by the district council to encourage the community to enjoy Wadeson Island as a nature and recreation space.

They started by working in groups to identify a range of local sustainability issues and making plans to take action to address them.

reymouth High School students who are enrolled at the West Coast Trades Academy marked conservation week recently by tackling a site full of gorse, near Mitre 10.

Griffen and Smith Mitre 10 gave the students discounted PPE and the landowners let the students tackle this project on their land.

“It's great to see youth passionate about taking action to improve our local environment. This was one of three projects that focused on conservation within the wetland, the other two focused on rubbish clean up and pest control,” Greymouth High tutor Lara Thompson, said.

The project site is on Raleigh Street at the back of Ngai Tahu Forestry, and to the north of Mitre 10 Mega.

One group decided to tackle pest plants around the wetland between Blaketown and Raleigh Street in Greymouth. On Friday, with helping hands from fellow students and a Department of Conservation ranger, they commenced their 'gorse-busting' project and succeeded in removing about 120 large gorse plants in just a couple of hours.

The weather was amazing, Kawatiri Westport ranger Sierra Jones said.

“It was perfect - we couldn't have asked for better!

Groups and stakeholders in conservation held stalls to promote services to the community and there was the opportunity for tree planting, games, face painting, raffles, and puzzles.

“Clean Streams Karamea and Conservation Volunteers NZ generously donated plants,” Ms Jones said.

“It is great to see it all come together after all the planning! It is always good to get people out and together engaging. It is something positive to do for the community especially after the floods.”

“It's time the airlines lifted their game. We are calling for airlines to communicate honestly with passengers about the reason for flight delays and cancellations, and to be upfront about passenger rights.” -Buller

Call to uphold flight passenger rights

“At present, the airlines are providing very limited information to passengers about their rights when a flight is cancelled or delayed,” Mr Duffy said.

“We want airlines to help passengers to understand their rights,” Consumer NZ chief executive Jon Duffy said.

This included overbooking, staffing, operational or mechanical issues.

onsumer NZ is campaigning for airlines to tell passengers about their rights when a flight is delayed or cancelled.

“We are calling on New Zealanders to sign our petition – to demand airlines clearly communicate passengers' rights when flights are cancelled or delayed.”Underthe Civil Aviation Act (CAA), you ticket holders had rights if their flight was delayed or cancelled for reasons within an airline's control.

It wants both Air New Zealand and Jetstar to provide clear, accurate and consistent information to passengers when their flights are disrupted.

“We've received a substantial number of complaints from confused or concerned passengers who have had to fight to understand the reason for their flight cancellation or delay, and to get the reimbursement they're legally entitled to.

The passenger was told to cover any additional costs he incurred.

Mr Duffy said immediate action is needed to make sure the thousands

a result, passengers are being left out of pocket and airlines are getting away with shirking their obligations under

However, under the CAA, he was entitled to claim back the full cost of his flight as well as the cost of his accommodation, and any other expenses he incurred as a result of the cancellation, up to a limit of $1700 (10 times the cost of the flight ticket), Mr Duffy said.
