Hokitika school jigsaw

Research is under way to restore Westland High School's honours boards that date back to 1879.

Some are lost, some were damaged in the school fire seven years ago, and some are non-existent.

Former Westland High School teacher

Jan Zuckerman, and ex-board of trustees chairman Latham Martin began the arduous task of re-documenting its honour roll students six months ago.

However, more than five decades of names are missing.

Mrs Zuckerman said they had gone all the way to 1928, but form there to 1980 there was a large gap.

”That is the part we are having trouble with.”

With the help of Hokitika Museum collections researcher Vaughan Bradley – and a large volume of old school year books and publications dating back to the 1930s that have been passed on by the school – the trio

are making slow, but steady progress.

”We are on the hunt for any names that can complete this very important task,” Mr Martin said.

”If you have copies of year books, badges, trophies, newspapers or have an incredible memory we are keen to hear from you.”

They were also looking for businesses and individuals that were keen to help fund the cost of the new rimu and brass honours boards to be installed at Westland High School.

Mr Martin said the school had committed some money towards the project. However, there was a shortfall of about $6000. Mrs Zuckerman said the honour boards were important in documenting the history of education in Hokitika.

They hoped to have them back on display in the new school hall this year.

Historic photographs and past school logos from its earlier days as the Hokitika District High School could also be incorporated in the display.

Design team appointed for Hokitika govt building

Work on the Hokitika government building is ramping up following confirmation of the project design team for the upgrade, conservation, and seismic strengthening of the 115 yearold heritage-listed building.

The team, which met on site recently, includes architects HMOA (Herriot Melhuish O'Neill Architects), heritage conservation architects Origin Consultants, structural and civil engineers Quoin Structural Consultants, building services consultants Powell Fenwick Associates, quantity surveyors WT Partnership and

constructability reviewer Naylor Love along with project managers Octa and architectural consultant Malcolm Walker. Heritage New Zealand programme co-ordinator Racheal Western says the appointment represents a significant milestone for the project.

“We're delighted to have assembled such a talented and experienced group to start this detailed design phase in the best possible way. They will expand on the preliminary assessments and designs completed in 2022 and finalise details from the foundations through to fire services,” she says.

Developed designs are expected to be completed in mid-2023. Activity on site is already under way with Hokitika builders Evan Jones Construction securing the building and preparing enabling works. Other preliminary work included commissioning a cultural narrative and heritage conservation report to inform design. Work on the Hokitika government building is due to be completed in 2025. The multi-million dollar project has been approved and funded through the Government's Infrastructure Reference Group programme.

Stormwater upgrade in Westport

BULLER District Council is close to completing the crucial investigation and design work ahead of construction of stormwater improvements for the Coates Street area in Westport.

This 'betterment' work is part of a wider $17.1 million programme of infrastructure repairs funded by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The essential infrastructure funding was granted after the July 2021 and February 2022 flood events.

For water, the first phase was immediate repair works of the three waters infrastructure. This second phase is focused on improvement of the damaged three waters infrastructure. It essentially identifies work that can logically and cost-effectively be performed as part of, or directly after, emergency works.

The improvement to the stormwater system is intended to minimise stormwater accumulating in the Coates Street area. Site investigations have taken place and a concept plan has been designed. The next stage is to verify the flow and extent of the stormwater catchment to confirm the proposed concept plan. Once these are finalised the construction phase of the project will occur in two stages.

Stage one includes building an open swale drain to the north of the houses and a concrete dish drain along part of Coates Street. These drains will lead stormwater into further drains behind and to the south of the polytechnic building.

Stage two is to build a proposed swale drain next to the old railway line embankment around the lagoon. Both drains are on council land or road.

Leaseholders will be consulted on the proposed works. Residents are welcome to contact council for any questions or to supply feedback to the plans.

Council's acting chief executive officer Rachel Townrow says: “We will start with the first stage as soon as possible once the catchment stormwater is confirmed, preparation is completed, and we have signed up a contractor.”

The swale drain alignment will need to be discussed with the West Coast Regional Council, which is designing the floodwall, and impacted landowners before physical works can start on stage two.”

Both stages are part of a much more comprehensive solution

Sallies launch 1000 Days Appeal

The Salvation Army's new appeal aims to raise $1 million to support 1000 children for 1000 days.

The '1000 Days Appeal' will provide wraparound support to parents of

young children, including the provision of early childhood care and education, the supply of practical necessities for growing families in need, and other help for parents.

“Tamariki deserve every opportunity to

grow and thrive in an environment that will lead them to a successful and positive future,” says territorial director of Community Ministries Jono Bell.

“They can only develop as well as their circumstances allow them, with many tamariki set up for a life of increased challenges, through no fault of their own.

“For whanau facing hardship and uncertaintymagnified due to the high cost of living – difficult decisions about daily survival may have to be prioritised over what may be of greater benefit for their children in the longer term.”

Mr Bell says the appeal acknowledges the importance of a supported and secure family environment to enable the best development for children.

“We want to provide more services that support children and their families to navigate crucial life stages and empower healthy development.”

The appeal will support assistance as varied as quality early childhood care and education; wraparound support to families including social work, advocacy, financial mentoring and counselling; back-to-school

supplies; baby essentials such as nappies and baby food; and parenting-support programmes. Activities for older children are also in the mix, including Aspire Youth – a programme for at-risk teens aged 11-16yrs. More information about the appeal, including how to donate, is available on The Salvation Army website: https://www.SalvationArmy.org.nz/1000days

Buller school principal retires

After 42 years, Jo Duston has gracefully bowed out of teaching and retired as principal of Westport South School.

Jo was born in Christchurch but her family moved to Timaru when she was five as it was a better climate for her bronchial asthma. They later shifted to nearby Salsbury, where her father was a sexton at the crematorium.

“We spent the night of the Wahine storm, bailing out water from where the crematorium burners were about to be installed. Earlier in the day, we had to hold on to my little brother for fear he would be blown away!”

Jo had aspirations to be a doctor but she was told at Timaru College she was not bright enough and suggested she should be a teacher or a nurse.

“When my results came in, they changed their mind but I was already heading to Dunedin Teachers' College.”

She met Pete there and married him before heading for a year of teaching in Nelson. They applied for a change of placement and moved to Napier, where Jo fell pregnant. Another move south, saw Pete teaching art in Timaru while Jo worked for Crothell's cleaning when they lived in Waimate.

Returning to the North Island again, she taught at Murupara School between Whakatane and Taupo for three years, then on to Taranaki where she eventually ended up as principal of Tarata – a two-teacher school.

After two years, she moved to New Plymouth (Westtown School) as assistant principal for four years before finally taking on the role as principal of Westport South.

“I was the first female principal in the immediate Buller area – I started the flow!”

Jo said she has seen many changes in education during her time in the sector.

“Many parents – not all – have a lack of value on education. Parents – and people – just don't value it the same and there is a distinct lack of support from parents in general.

“Parents believe what kids tell them, whereas kids only ever tell them the bit they want them to know.”

Jo said changes in special education had been detrimental to all children.

“I am a full supporter of inclusion education but there are some children who should not be in mainstream education.

“There is no other job where people would be verbally and physically abused and expected to just put up with it and carry on! Having a TA (teacher aide) in the room doesn't fix it. A lot comes from the fact you can't even 'escort' a child to a 'Time Out' place, which is ridiculous because it's called 'restraint.' It is bull!

“Teachers need to understand what trauma is and why kids are behaving the way they do but unless we can teach them ways to behave appropriately, they won't be accountable later on in society.

“Many children have a right to be angry but let's teach them how to behave in society. They need to know they just cannot hit, abuse or bite without consequences.”

Jo said there was a distinct lack of specialist psychologists.

“There are just not enough and teachers are not trained to do it. We need specialist trained help and support. We have been very lucky at South where the BOTs have funded teachers from time to time to lessen the teacher to child ratio.

“Understandably, teachers are struggling to cope with some of these behaviours and they don't want these kids in their classrooms. Then, the Government is saying not to stand them down because it doesn't do the child any good nor make them feel good about themselves and to just deal with them. I found it hard as the principal to be stuck in the middle.

“And the other kids don't want to play with these kids and then we are forced to put programmes in place like PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) to teach the other

kids to tolerate and include them when that isn't the natural consequence of those behaviours!”

She said children were coming into schools with less and less, and teachers were left to pick up the pieces. “I'm not sure if it is because parents are having to work and don't put the time in, or tv and devices and 20 free hours of childcare have all contributed.”

Jo also said there had recently been a migration to Westport of families with high needs without the services to support them.

“There is sometimes a cycle in education. Structured literacy has come back and other things probably will too.”

So not only were Jo and Pete full-time teachers, they also fostered children.

“We did a count up a while ago and we stopped at about 220 children. Some were just overnight and some for six months or two years. We have a family of seven, all related through the mother, who are 'home for life' placements and are still with me.”

They have two grown-up biological children of their own who now also live in Westport.

“Our daughter has also taken on children who she is raising along with her own,” Jo said.

Jo said that growing up, she had friends who ran a foster home and who were very influential on her own life. “I saw the good being done back then and I thought my own heart was big enough to extend to others: “There but for the grace of God goes I!”

Jo said her own upbringing was good but it was far from perfect and people around her were very supportive. “I could have ended up in a home myself.”

Jo and Pete ran a family home for five years in Timaru in the 1980s when their own children were young. Pete taught and Jo stayed at home.

“I would put hours in each day talking, reading and playing with the kids. Early childhood teachers do a great job but there's nowhere near the one to one that we put in.”

However, back then Jo said social workers would work alongside families in placement homes and support them to learn the parenting skills they were lacking.

“It was a very active process and kids were returned child by child with support. Now it seems to me they don't uplift kids early enough and after seven years you are basically 'pushing the proverbial uphill! The support systems are just not there in the same way these days.”

Jo said the past five years have been particularly challenging in both education and personally. Pete died three years ago, navigating through two Covid lockdowns and dealing with Covid impacts on school life, a hip replacement and the Westport floods where she was caught between selling one house and purchasing another have all added a great deal of stress to her life. She said that despite outward appearances,

she would describe herself as more of an introvert who has to psych herself up before getting up and speaking in front of crowds.

“Someone once told me to imagine the staff wearing bikinis. Well in my farewell speech, I had to say how much they have all changed!”

Jo said unless she had things planned like being on the morning tea roster at the church, she would happily stay at home.

“I am definitely ready to retire and I'm looking forward to finally handing over the keys. I was still on alarm callout for the holidays.”

And so, what does Jo plan on doing in her retirement?

She is currently nursing a bad back she has acquired since finishing school. She has cleaned all her kitchen cupboards and continued completing jigsaw puzzles – a favourite family activity. She also plans on returning to her passion of sewing, knitting and quilting.

“I've set a goal for the first 12 months. I'm making all of my 'home for life' kids a matinee' set, quilt and their favourite jersey they had as a baby in a child-size. That's 10 sets and if I can't achieve that I'm going to give my stores of materials away!

“And the staff at Westport South can put a dartboard up with my picture on it and use it for all of the decisions I've made they haven't liked!

“I know Craig Adams (new principal) will do a great job but it certainly isn't an easy one! I am now ready to have a bit of time for me!“

Future proofing the forestry sector

Future-proofing New Zealand's radiata pine plantations against climate challenges and a rapidly changing economic environment has become a whole lot easier with a world-leading application of genomic selection (GS), a tool to accelerate conventional tree breeding.

A partnership between the Radiata Pine Breeding Company (RPBC), New Zealand's specialist radiata pine breeding company, and Scion, a Crown Research Institute formerly known as the Forest Research Institute, has seen GS successfully applied operationally at large scale in radiata pine breeding.

The successful use of genomic selection technology late last year for radiata pine seedlings was the result of years of research and development investment by RPBC's shareholders and an MBIE-funded scientific collaboration with Scion which began in 2014.

“Our challenge as an industry is to select the best trees with improved traits for growth rate, wood quality, and enhanced disease resistant qualities - all of which are vitally important contributors to the progress of radiata forestry,” Darrell O'Brien, RPBC 's general manager says.

The work RPBC undertakes is strategically positioned to contribute to the delivery of the government's strategy of creating a high value and resilient forestry and wood processing sector.

The first step in implementing GS for radiata breeding was the development of the world's first radiata pine SNP chip – a tool which allows fast and efficient identification of specific genes – to significantly reduce the cost of genotyping, essentially making it financially viable.

“We are beginning work this year to genotype 10,000 radiata pine needle samples per annum,” Mr O'Brien says. “This means our strategy of reducing the RPBC radiata pine tree breeding cycle from 18-plus years to nine years is becoming reality.”

The result will be that RPBC shareholders and the wider radiata pine forestry sector benefit in both the short and long terms from faster creation of improved germplasm and deployment of better-quality seed stock.

From a low emissions future perspective,

faster deployment of improved trees to the production forest can translate to a larger percent of logs at harvesting achieving higher grades.

Higher-grade logs can be used in areas such as construction and furniture which locks up more carbon for longer periods. Scion geneticists have conservatively

Heart Foundation Big Heart Appeal kicks off

BIG names, big hearts, big stories. The Heart Foundation's biggest fundraiser of the year is back this week with some well-known New Zealanders sharing their heart stories to highlight the Big Heart Appeal and the importance of investment in heart research to save lives.

“With heart disease claiming the life of one New Zealander every 90 minutes, it's vital that we invest in life-saving research to help keep families together for longer,” says Dr Gerry Devlin, medical director at the Heart Foundation.

“Through the support of donations, we're able to invest in heart research and overseas fellowships for cardiologists, who are able to train at some of the best hospitals in the world and bring back those skills and new treatments to save lives here.”

Heart disease can affect anyone, anywhere, at any time. That is why the Heart Foundation is calling for New Zealanders to donate whatever they can towards funding heart research during the month of February either on-line (heartfoundation.org.nz/big-heartappeal) or through the thousands of Big Heart Appeal street collectors across New Zealand this Friday and Saturday.

Former All Blacks and Warriors doctor, Dr John Mayhew, was completing a workout at his local gym five years ago when he suffered a cardiac arrest, a serious heart event that occurs when the heart stops pumping blood

around the body.

“I don't remember anything, but I hear they ripped off my shirt on the floor of the gym and successfully resuscitated me,” says Dr Mayhew. “I woke up after a three-day spell in intensive care on a ventilator and still feel lucky that there were people around to help and I have no neurological problems.”

He says incredible advancements have been made in treating heart disease. “We are lucky these days to have a wide range of treatments and medications for heart disease, all of which are helping New Zealanders to live longer and healthier lives.” 

Award-winning singer and entertainer Suzanne Prentice believes if it had not been for the quick actions of her husband and hospital staff she may not have survived a heart attack in 2022.

“I had just got home from a meeting and had dinner as usual when suddenly I began having pain in my neck and back,” Suzanne says.

“All of a sudden the pain became very intense, and I was on the floor.”

Her husband called an ambulance immediately and she was taken to Southland Hospital.

“Once I was at the hospital, in the early hours of the morning I went into cardiac arrest, and before I knew it, I was heading for Dunedin.”

Suzanne received helpful advice from the Heart Foundation around lifestyle changes

to look after herself and successfully manage her heart condition, inherited from both her parents.

“I was extremely lucky,” she says. “It could have gone either way, but I have been given a second chance for which I'll be eternally grateful. A cardiac arrest certainly makes you look at life differently.”

Improvements in management of conditions such as heart failure, coronary artery disease and heart rhythm disorders are examples of some of the advances that have been made to improve heart health outcomes for New Zealanders, and they wouldn't be possible without the generous public donations the Heart Foundation has received.

“I want to help continue these incredible advances and enable the researchers, innovators, doctors and nurses to keep improving heart health for New Zealanders and their families,” she says.

Adventure fisherman, entrepreneur and father of three, Andrew Hill, suffered the first of three heart attacks at 40 years old.

“I was lying in bed, feeling like my whole chest was closing up and I could barely breathe,” Andrew recalls.

Five years after his first heart attack, Andrew was out on his jetski when he experienced a similar discomfort in his chest.

“I was all alone, and that was quite scary. I rode home without catching any fish, which

isn't normal for me.”

After making it safely off the water, Andrew took himself back to hospital and had stents put in.

Andrew took on all the advice he received after his first two heart attacks and was very committed to taking his medication and living a healthy lifestyle. But despite this, three years after his second heart attack and two weeks before Christmas 2019, Andrew's shortness of breath returned. He had experienced another heart attack. This time he needed double bypass surgery.

“I have huge respect for the New Zealand cardiologists and heart surgeons who are saving lives and giving those with heart conditions a better quality of life.”

DJ, dancer and choreographer, Lance Savali, lives with a heart condition called supraventricular tachycardia or SVT, which he says has given him his fair share of scary moments on stage.

“My heartbeat is way faster than a normal heart,” says Lance. “This is not easy to manage when you're dancing up a storm on stage.”

Keyhole surgery has helped Lance maintain his active lifestyle and a good understanding of his condition helps him to manage it.

Now he wants to give back and support the Heart Foundation, his charity of choice for the new season of Treasure Island: Fans v Faves, and encourage New Zealanders to support the Big Heart Appeal.

for big day out

After two years of cancellations, the 70th South Westland A and P Show is ”back and bigger than ever” for the 2023 celebration. The rural day out will bring everything from woodchopping and wearable arts to pet parades and equestrian events as well as a top line-up of live entertainment, including award-winning pop/ country singer Jody Direen to the Whataroa Domain on February 25.

”The committee has worked very hard to provide the people of South Westland a show that is relevant, interesting, exciting and a great place to catch up with old friends and relations,” committee president Dave Nolan said.

”It was with huge disappointment that we had to cancel the last couple of years' show, however, we are back and bigger than ever this year.”

Despite difficult times post-Covid he acknowledged the sponsors who had continued to support the show, and make it happen.

What is a Contracting Out Agreement?

Under the Property (Relationships) Act 1976 (“the Act”) all relationship property is to be divided equally. Couples are, however, able to make their own rules about ownership and division of their relationship property.

Section 21 of the Act enables couples to “contract out” of the Act and enter into their own private agreement to determine how the property is to be owned and divided between them. This is called a “Contracting Out Agreement.”

When can we enter into a Contracting Out Agreement?

A couple can enter into a Contracting Out Agreement at any point in their relationship, provided both parties agree.

Although an agreement can be entered into at

any point, it is important for an agreement to be considered before a de facto relationship, marriage or civil union has lasted three years. After the three-year period, the rules under the Act apply for equal sharing of relationship property. This means that if one party does not agree to enter into the agreement, the Act will apply for the division of the relationship property should the relationship end. Can any property be included in the Contracting Out Agreement?

An agreement can deal with all of the property that is owned, or even just one asset. It can include what assets will be shared and in what percentages, what property will not be shared and how the assets are to be divided if the relationship ends. The agreement can also cover future

Is my

property including future income and property purchased.

What do we need to do to make a valid agreement?

There are some important requirements that must be complied with if the agreement is to be valid. The agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties. Each party must get independent legal advice before signing, which means each party must get advice from separate lawyers.

Each party’s signature must also be witnessed by their lawyer, and the lawyer who witnesses the signature of a party must certify that, before that party signed the agreement, the lawyer explained to that party the effect and implications of the agreement.

message from Inland Revenue a scam?

In recent years there has been an increase in scammers masquerading as Inland Revenue. Scammers will attempt to gather sensitive bank information or convince business into paying money to fraudulent accounts. In many cases, once the money has gone it is impossible to recover it.

As we approach the end of the financial year, we suspect traffic from scammers will increase. These scams often appear in the form of emails, texts, or phone calls. Scammers will gain the victims attention by offering refunds, or in other

cases demanding the payment of tax, frequently using threats of fines or arrest if amounts are left unpaid.

There are often several telling signs of a scam email/text, these include.

• Sent from a falsified email addresses (All legitimate IRD emails end with; ird.govt.nz)

• Includes Hyperlinks (IRD will not send direct hyperlinks to MyIR in emails or texts)

• Contains refund or tax to pay amounts (IRD will not include figures in texts/emails)

• Scam emails often contain spelling or

grammatical errors.

Our advice is to be very careful when receiving emails & texts from Inland Revenue. If you are unsure of the validity, your best option is to contact your tax agent or Inland Revenue directly at 0800 755 247.

If you receive and email scam, you can forward it to IRD at: ‘phishing@ird.govt.nz’. you can also contact this email if you receive scam phone calls & texts. This will alert Inland Revenue of the scam and help cybersecurity shut down these emails before others fall victim.

Youth inspired to aspire

Exhibitors from around the country were in Hokitika last Wednesday for the second Inspire to Aspire careers expo event created by Westland Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ).

About 1200 people visited the event, including 800 students from Years 7 to 13 from throughout Westland and Greymouth. Some funding for transportation costs was provided by Development West Coast to ensure that students from all around the district could attend.

MTFJ Westland co-ordinator Charlotte Bradley-Peni says: “Inspire to Aspire is the largest rural careers fair in New Zealand, as far as I'm aware, and one of the largest by square meterage, exhibitor numbers and youth attendees per head of population. It is so successful for the district, that if funding allows we intend to hold it as a biennial event.”

Mayors Taskforce for Jobs, which is part of the wider youth employment initiative the Rural Community Resilience Programme, enables mayors to join the Ministry of Social Development and Local Government New Zealand in supporting young people into meaningful employment.

To date, the Westland programme has supported 230 youth into employment opportunities and in excess of 100 industry

training opportunities within Westland.

“Inspire to Aspire is not about just showcasing educational pathways it's also to present what real opportunities are available in different industries. Each exhibitor provided hands-on activities to encourage engagement in discussion with youth and allow them to hone in on their interpersonal skills.”

Local businesses sponsored prizes for the most inspirational and most interactive exhibitors. Being independent of the event and exhibitors LGNZ Mayors Taskforce for Jobs programme manager Emma Anderson judged the awards and awarded prizes to:

Most Inspirational – Hokitika Museum, which had a photo booth, and demonstrate with passion clear pathways to jobs within the industry and engaged youth in a deep and inspirational manner.

• Most interactive Edwards and Harding Roofing, who stepped youth through the process of securing roofing iron in a safe and secure manner. They also teamed up with their ITO, Vertical Horizons offering a clear pathway on how to become a qualified roofer.

Both exhibits received a visa Prezzy Card sponsored by Cuffs Ltd a sash and glass trophy.

“We were really lucky that the weather was perfect but we were mindful that whilst we were enjoying the day other parts of the country were experiencing devastating weather! Unfortunately, it meant that some exhibitors were unable to attend but we hope they will be at the next one,” Ms Bradley-Peni said.

The event was run by the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs team: Ms Bradley-Peni, Lydia BaylisHarcourt, business support officer, and Pascale Geoffrion, youth facilitator, who worked hard to make sure that the day ran really well.

Westland Mayor Helen Lash spent the day at the event engaging with students and exhibitors.

“The Inspire to Aspire careers day had my full support. It is a fantastic initiative. We are incredibly lucky that this team is so dedicated to producing an event that showcases to our youth the many opportunities available for them, whether educational or vocational, to give them the confidence to find their place in the workforce when they leave school.”

Some activities at the exhibition booths included:

• FENZ kitting out youth in full fire safety gear and using the fire hose.

• Westland Milk Products did a PPE time trial.

• Census NZ introduced youth to DJ-ing and street art classes.

• West Coast Emergency Management brought along their emergency management tent and the earthquake trailer.

• Skin and Body by Jasmin taught youth about the art of beauty therapy.

• Snap Fitness taught youth the importance of correct technique and held a push up competition.

• Planning Department of Westland District Council offered youth the opportunity to learn about the planning pathway.

• Wild for Knots taught the art of Macramé.

• Regan Tamanui, Australian-based stencil artist, taught the process of stencil art and design.

• NZ Home Loans advised on financial literacy to bridge a gap in youth knowledge.

• Go with Tourism and the Police brought their virtual reality headsets.

• Westroads Ltd showcased a digger and truck.

• Vimo showcased all-terrain wheelchairs offering youth the opportunity to test drive and learn about how to become an inventor.

• Crusaders Academy manager and former Westland High School student Paul Galland attended with Te Pukenga – Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

NZSO brings baroque music to the Coast

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra returns to the West Coast next month to perform some of the most exciting and uplifting music ever written, with concerts in Greymouth and Westport.

The orchestra's Brandenburg concerts feature four works by baroque music giants Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Georg Philipp Telemann.

Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 5 is a thrilling and innovative work. Such is its energy and depth, music scholars regard No 5 as the blueprint for many of the flamboyant romantic piano concertos written 100 years later.

Today, Brandenburg Concerto No 5 continues to mesmerise listeners for its timeless beauty and boldness. A highlight of the piece will be soloist, NZSO section principal flute Bridget Douglas, who will accompany the orchestra.

“I've been enamoured with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No 5 ever since I was introduced to it at high school,” Douglas said..

“It's one of Bach's most joyous works and his use of three concerto soloists makes it particularly fun to perform as we musically 'converse' with each other. The second movement is especially gorgeous with just three soloists performing. It's beautifully

intimate chamber music at its absolute best.”

Telemann's Viola Concerto is one of his most famous compositions and one of the first known concertos written specifically for viola. In the talented hands of soloist NZSO associate principal Alexander McFarlane, this groundbreaking work for the instrument is live music at its best.

“Telemann was one of the most popular composers of his day, and his Viola Concerto is one of the seminal works for the viola from the Baroque period,” says McFarlane.

“I am excited to be performing this work, a compact yet profound journey through warmth, energy, pathos, and vitality.

Telemann was also known for the expectation of ornamentation in his work, which I intend to uphold in the upcoming tour.”

Brandenburg also features another superb Telemann orchestral work, his Overture Suite La Changeante, and Handel's Concerto Grosso No 1, the first of his 'Twelve Grand Concertos' and among some of the finest examples of Baroque concerto grosso, written for a small group of soloists and orchestra.

The NZSO will also perform Brandenburg in Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson. It will be at the Regent Theatre in Greymouth on March 15, and Westport on March 16.

Baroque musical treat

National cat health month

OUR feline companions are a perennial source of entertainment and joy, but with February being National Cat Health Month our thoughts turn to more sombre stuff.

Cats can and do suffer from various conditions, some chronic and others acute, yet most quite manageable with the proper knowledge and attention.

Insurance claims show the most significant conditions to which cats are highly prone – and how you can best support their health with one simple tip.

A Solo Baroque Cello Concert Tour featuring Bach and other Baroque gems will be in Greymouth next month.

Musician Tomas Hurnik was born in Ostrava, Czech Republic and was an active performer in Europe.

He now actively organises and performs in concerts, recordings, workshops and master classes across New Zealand. His biggest passion is to support young talented musicians in New Zealand by giving them opportunities to rehearse and perform in concerts and concert tours alongside professional musicians.

Period instruments are musical instruments which have been made in the same way that they were hundreds of years ago so that classical music, such as Baroque music, will sound how it did when it was first composed.

Period string instruments are similar to classical string instruments but with three main differences. First, the strings are made of pure gut instead of steel, giving the instrument a softer, but more direct sound which allows for a clearer less muddled sound.

Second, the tuning is lower which puts less stress on the instruments, and thus less tension is transferred in the vibrations of the sound. This

can be very soothing for the human nervous system and has been found to have positive effects on children with special needs.

Finally, because the sound from the period instrument is more direct and “dry“, the acoustics in which it is played is of vital importance. Overall, period instruments sound best in traditional venues such as cathedrals, basilicas and acoustically suitable music halls.

For five years, the Baroque Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand has co-operated with the University of Canterbury with educating, training and providing performance opportunities for young talented musicians.

The aim of this project is to deepen this educational experience by allowing the students to rehearse and perform on period instruments so that they can more authentically explore the roots of western music.

Tickets can be found at Eventfinda through this link: www.baroquemusic. co.nz/events for the Greymouth concert on Saturday, March 4 at 4pm in St Patrick's Church.

Profits from the concerts will go directly to raise funds for 14 string instruments to create a small string chamber ensemble.

“Probably the best and most universal advice for any cat parent is the simple act of regular vet check-ups,” says Michelle Le Long, COO of pet insurance specialist PD Insurance.

“Pet health is very much like human health in this regard: catching anything early is a huge health advantage and seeing your vet every six to 12 months goes a long way to achieving that.”

Healthy Pets New Zealand chair and veterinarian Dr Catherine Watson agrees.

“Cats can't tell us what's wrong so getting to know your cat's behaviour makes a big difference to their health and well-being in the long term. It assists greatly in you being able to tell early when things are not right.”

Common cat ailments

There's good reason for Le Long and Watson's advice. Felines can suffer from a multitude of diseases, including cat-specific viral ones like Feline Panleukopaenia, Feline Herpesvirus and Feline Calicivirus, as well as stress related disorders.

'High rise syndrome' is unique to cats too and relates to injuries sustained in a fall – being able to land on their feet doesn't always help! Broken bones, severe

abdominal and chest trauma, facial damage and other wounds can result. Cars are another particular hazard to roaming cats. They're also susceptible to fleas, ringworm and other infections. Chronic conditions include kidney, thyroid and heart disease, diabetes and cancer; with these as with anything, early identification and treatment is essential for your cat's long-term health.

Watson says advances in feline health mean some previously deadly diseases are now treatable. For example, Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), seen in cats under three years old, once carried a near 100% mortality rate. Highly effective treatment options have recently been discovered, with antiviral Remdesivir appearing to treat around 85% of infected cats.

“It is still early days in how we best use this drug, with research currently underway in New Zealand, but initial results are highly promising. Advances are made all the time with treatments for a wide range of cat health conditions,” she notes.

What insurance claims show about cat health in NZ

One major advantage of pet insurance is help with medical treatment bills. Claims processed by PD Insurance shed a unique perspective on cat health, and Le Long says three of the top five most commonly claimed conditions are diarrhoea, gastroenteritis and conjunctivitis.

“Bladder and upper urinary tract infections are routinely claimed, too. But the biggest by far – and I really do mean by far – is for injuries sustained in cat fights,” she stresses.

“This sends a clear message to every cat parent. The best way to keep your cat safe, uninjured and

healthy is to keep them contained on your property, rather than letting them wander beyond the boundaries. There are various non-intrusive ways to do so, from secure catios and cat enclosures to cat-proof fencing,” advises Le Long.

PD Insurance customers are alerted to the risk of cat fights, with policy wording recommending keeping cats contained and claims for injuries from fighting limited to two for the life of the pet.

Le Long continues, “Desexing them is also very worthwhile, as it not only reduces the likelihood of fights when cats are in heat, it reduces the risk of cancer and more. Research shows desexed cats live a longer, healthier life.” The basics are best

Other basic advice always in fashion is keeping vaccinations and parasite control up to date, feeding a measured, high-quality diet, ensuring kitty is wellstimulated and keeping them groomed to help pick up skin and coat changes. Again, spaying and neutering may limit your cat's fighting spirit and help protect its health – but it's also vital in preventing unwanted litters.

Further, maintaining a healthy relationship with your cat means being alert to their well-being. Watson comes back to how you'll know if your furry friend isn't okay.

“The biggest tip I can offer about cats is that they don't react or respond to things like people or dogs. Cats often present quite differently for problems because they're often secretive and naturally solitary. They behave differently to stress and can be much more difficult to manage or treat, knowing their 'normal' can be hugely helpful.“
