The new RSA base comes four years after the 1950 Westland War Memorial Hall on the same site was closed due to safety concerns and later demolished.

Resonance Karamea T

he Oparara Reserve hosted a crowd of about 600 at the annual ‘Resonance Karamea’ festival with music held recently.

Event organiser Gary Smith said that over 100 artists performed throughout the three-day event.

“The festival is unique in its location and it is very much focused on being family friendly,” Mr Smith said. “We try to make it as diverse as possible from rock bands to folk music. There are a diversity of people and multiple spaces,” he said.

Mr Smith said that it was set up in five separate zones. The live community stage was surrounded by the market and food stalls. Most of the stallholders came from around the South Island.

The electronic stage was at the beach. The tribal zone had drums and acoustic music. The kids zone had clowns, plays, circus workshops, music, physical structures and a creative art space. The workshop area held over 20 sessions throughout the weekend including yoga, spiritual healing, natural childbirth, jewellery making and creating native seed balls.

Mr Smith said that while the event attracted some locals and others who dropped in, the majority were

travellers and musicians from around New Zealand and overseas.

A band from the Netherlands performed and artists came from Melbourne. There were also several acts from the United Kingdom and Europe.

He said that it took about six months to organise and eight full days to set up prior to the event.

About 35 volunteers helped. The reserve, at the mouth of the Oparara River beside the estuary, housed 550 campers. The tickets cost $105 which included camping. Composting toilets and showers were also provided.

“Most people come for the whole event — the whole journey,” he said.

A festival has been held in Karamea for the last ten years. There have been six summer festivals with the last three being under the name of Resonance Karamea Music Festival, marking it as a community driven event.

Mr Smith said that they received sponsorship of a generator from Buller Electricity. They liaised with the Buller District Council to meet the required regulations.

Mr Smith said that it was now self funding.

“For the past six years we have been planting natives and helped with weed control. Last year we spent $4000 mitigating erosion. It is a lovely area,” he said.

Farmer thrilled by lifetime catch

A

8.6kg snapper was an exciting catch on a kontiki fishing line for a Buller farming family recently.

Marty Syron of Waimangaroa said that they had hardly put the line out this season due to the “terrible” summer conditions. However, they made the most of a short fine spell and put the line out into the sea directly off the beach from their farm. The family was delighted with the catch.

Mr Syron, who has lived on the seaside dairy farm just north of Waimangaroa for his entire life, said that they regularly put the line out in a typical summer. They would normally catch a ‘feed’ most time.

However, there had been few opportunities this year. He said that it was, ‘probably his best catch ever.’ He also caught six rig at the same time but the prize was the snapper.

The snapper and other fish were eaten and enjoyed at a family barbecue the following day.

Mr Syron said that the spate of high seas had seen more coastal erosion to the southern parts of his land while there was currently less erosion occurring to his land further north.

Despite the adverse weather conditions this summer, the Mokihinui Fishing Contest in early January saw good numbers and sizes of fish caught.

However, the annual Mokihinui junior fishing competition for children usually held after Christmas had been postponed several times and had yet to be held.

The FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final is being held in Hokitika and Kumara in early March.

Tv presenter Te Radar is travelling the country hosting the finals, ahead of the grand final in July. Originally from a dairy farm in

ANDREW WIFFEN Hokitika At 29 and a veteran of the contest, he is hoping to be groom after twice as best man.

Having grown up on his family’s sheep and beef property in Ward, he also has strong technical skills he can draw on after completing a Bachelor in Commerce and Agriculture. Andrew now owns in partnership with his family, a 100ha, 200 cow dairy farm near Hokitika. Engaged to Kate, the pair are tying the knot two weeks after the Grand Final.

MITCHELL FLOOD Canvastown, Nelson-Marlborough He might be only 22, but dairy farm assistant Mitchell Flood could be the competitor to put the Nelson/ Marlborough District on the map after he won his place in the Tasman Regional Final. He spent the first six years of his life living in Blenheim before his parents moved to a lifestyle block in Seddon. He is now a dairy farm assistant on a 740-cow farm in Canvastown.

ROSCOE TAGGART North Canterbury The 25-year-old Waimakariri arable, sheep and beef farmer impressed at the Hurunui District contest and has all the skills that could see him go all the way to the Grand Final this year.

His passion for being on the land led to Roscoe putting his Bachelor of Commerce and Agriculture on hold after two years of study to head home to the North Canterbury family farm he now manages. His practical and physical nous should see him near the top of the field going into the evening section.

ROBIN HORNBLOW Te Pirita Robin heads into the Tasman final as a favourite to win having competed well at the 2014 final where he placed fourth. The 28-year-old has a wide array of practical skills having grown up in the Hawke’s Bay on a sheep, beef and deer finishing operation. He has also experienced broad acre cropping in Australia and has worked on a large arable farm in England. Robin also has a Diploma in Agriculture and Farm Management and currently manages a 1000 cow farm for Camden Group at Te Pirita.

YOUNG FARMERS FINALS SAM HEAVEN Fox Glacier but representing Hurunui The 29-year-old helicopter pilot who grew up in Rangiora may not have been raised on a farm but has had ample experience working on the land since leaving school. In his third regional final, Sam will be looking to bring all his practical expertise to the fore including the overseas experiences he had driving tractors in Canada and the four years he spent heli-mustering on stations in Western Australia. Having just sold his share in a North Canterbury tailing and drenching contracting business, Sam is no slouch when it comes to business management and long-term he would like to own a sheep and beef property. He is now flying helicopters for tourists over Fox Glacier — but come the end of the night he hopes he will be flying the Tasman flag at the Grand Final.

SIMON FERGUSON Rolleston In his first year of competing, 27-year-old Simon was the surprise winner of the Christchurch District Contest and Skills Day and showed he will be a hot contender to take the Tasman regional title this year. A farm consultant for Farmrite, Simon has all round ability having been a herd manager for Landcorp, a tractor driver in Western Australia and a UHT plant operator for Tatua Dairy Company and has an Agri-science degree from Massey University.

He lives at Rolleston.

MEGAN HANDS Malvern After four attempts, Megan is a Regional Finalist and she could not be happier, although she does admit to being a little nervous. The 26-year-old is expected to do well in the technical and theory challenges but has shown she is no pushover when it comes to the practical skills. Megan grew up on a dairy farm in the Manawatu and always wanted to have a career in the primary industry. After completing a degree in Environmental Management and Planning, she worked in Central Otago before becoming an Environmental Auditor for Irrigo.

ELLESH NORRIE Reefton In her first year of competing, 23-year-old Ellesh showed that she will be a strong contender particularly with the wide variety of practical experience she has attained at a young age. After growing up on a Pleasant Point sheep and beef farm, she gained a Bachelor of Agriculture and then turned her hand to dairy farming for one season in North Otago. This year she has moved to Reefton where she works on a 1000ha dry-stock Landcorp farm but her real passion lies in Boer Goats and one day she hopes to breed them.

Red Puppy appeal

T

he Blind Foundation needs a generous helping hand and is calling for volunteers for the 2017 Red Puppy Appeal on March 24 and 25, to raise funds for the breeding and training of guide dogs.

Every day, an average of three New Zealanders register with the Blind Foundation for help and support with sight loss.

Five-year-old Asha is one of many New Zealanders receiving support from the Blind Foundation and hopes to have her very own guide dog one day.

Each year, guide dog puppies begin their lives with big futures ahead of them, hoping to act as the eyes for those in our communities who are blind or have low vision.

Puppies need up to two years of thorough training and support from specialist trainers, and volunteer puppy walkers to teach them the ways of the busy world we live in.

Although there are many working guide dogs in New Zealand, the waiting list is around 12 months.

The Blind Foundation’s Cherie McClintock says the wait time can be greatly reduced if more guide dogs are bred and trained, which is why the Red Puppy Appeal is so important. “The costs for breeding and training a guide dog are fully funded by public donations and sponsorship,� Ms McClintock said. “Guide dogs couldn’t do what they do without help and support from fellow New Zealanders.�

Visual history of West Coast Chinese

A

Chinese man who got his Bachelor of Design and Visual Arts in Auckland has put together a website of professional photographs showcasing the history of the Chinese on the West Coast.

Undergraduate Yichen Hu first headed west to visit Arthur’s Pass. When he got to Kumara, he saw the information panels about Chinese, and became aware of the proposed Chinese garden. Then he reached the pounding

Tasman Sea and imagined what early settlers and explorers must have faced, so he set about photographing the West Coast for his degree.

He then narrowed it down to the Chinese.

Julia Bradshaw’s book Golden Prospects, about Chinese on the West Coast, was a large help. He also got out and spoke to people and explored the region using maps.

In Whataroa he visited a grave erected to a European by Sim Hong. Near Rosstown, in Reefton, he saw where a Chinese immigrant once had a market garden.

THE West Coast Penguin Trust has celebrated its 10th birthday.

Set up by a small group of penguin enthusiasts, founding members were concerned at the apparent decline of blue penguin numbers in the Charleston area.

Late last year the three founding trustees — Kerry-Jayne Wilson, Jill Cotton and Helen Chambers — held a celebratory lunch, joined by supporters.

The trust has moved from its

focus on blue penguins and predator control to addressing other land-based threats such as vehicles and loose dogs, and has extended efforts to the other West Coast penguin, the Fiordland crested penguin, as well as other threatened seabirds.

It is also an educational resource and is expanding input from primary to secondary schools.

Graduates of leadership course ready to apply new skills The 5th West Coast Leadership & Governance programme has just wrapped up with 13 new graduates from across a wide range of West Coast industries and sectors ready to apply what they have learned to their own careers and businesses.

Facilitated by DWC, the programme offers a unique learning opportunity for anyone in or looking to take up a governance role, senior executives or business owners and managers.

The course is split into two components with its leadership workshops delivered by the New Zealand Institute of Management and Leadership (NZIML) and the governance workshops run by Westlake Governance DWC Chief Executive Chris Mackenzie says the success of the course can be attributed to the range of topics covered which set the participants up for the next step in their career.

“The course work is so varied, from financials, company and contract law, to statutory requirements, health and safety, and ethical standards. The end result is that

we have a group of Coasters with a keen appreciation of leadership, management and governance, and how and when to apply each of these skill sets,” Mr Mackenzie says.

“Having more people in our community with these higher level skills is of immense benefit to the West Coast and its commercial growth and success.”

Enrolments are currently open for the next programme due to commence in April with ten workshops delivered over 10 months, and workshops are delivered across the Coast to make it as accessible as possible.

Participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship from their employer, but also contact DWC to see if your business is eligible for funding of up to 50% of the programme cost through the Regional Business Partner programme.

Local loyalty business reaps the benefit of local assistance One of the key support functions offered by DWC are loans which have helped many small businesses get a head start.

One of those businesses is West Coast Rewards, a unique marketing service that utilises the collective appeal of local businesses.

Its founder, Rachelle Hicks, took up a microloan from DWC to get started. She wanted to create a platform for local businesses to promote themselves while attracting and rewarding customers through a loyalty system.

“The aim of West Coast Rewards is to offer local businesses an advertising option which provides affordable, collaborative marketing through print, radio and social media,” Rachelle explains. “It also gives businesses a way of rewarding their loyal customers & clients, which can assist in creating repeat sales and attracting new customers.”

Rachelle says the benefits of being a member are many, but her motivation is to lessen the confusion for businesses that are trying to

find the best way to spend their often limited marketing budgets.

Growing up locally and with a background in retail and hospitality, Rachelle understands the unique market and business environment of the West Coast. “I really wanted to provide an affordable option for businesses looking to get best value out of their marketing money by providing promotion through various platforms, as well as being able to offer my clients exclusive advertising & marketing deals from other West Coast suppliers,” Rachelle says.

She was pleased to have had the option of a micro loan from DWC when she was starting out as it enabled her to launch the website, westcoastrewards.co.nz. “DWC have also taken time to meet with me on many occasions and given me advice and support over the last couple of years, which is always useful.”

She says she would recommend the services DWC provides to anyone who is reaching for a new goal in business.

Change at DWC You will have read in the daily papers that the Chair of DWC, John Sturgeon ONZM MBE is to be replaced as the Councils’ appointee on the DWC Trust Board from 1 July 2017.

While we at DWC are sad to be losing John, we recognise that under the terms of the Deed, Councils, through a panel appointed by them (one member for each of the four Councils) can by majority vote remove the Appointed Trustee and appoint a replacement Appointed Trustee at any time.

John has been a great servant of the Trust Board and a strong advocate for the Region.

We wish him well going forward and will no doubt call upon his knowledge of this great region from time to time.

However, that is not all that is going on within the region at present.

You will all be aware that the Government announced and released a Regional Growth Study on 20 September 2016 which will provide us with the opportunity to look at how best to organise ourselves to better attract investment and jobs to the West Coast as well as being able to identify perceived obstacles to that growth.

Tourism is the most important growth industry for us on the Coast at present but, as the recent and continued closure of the Midland Railway Line along with the closure of the roads and railway lines on the East Coast and the flooding and slips at and

around Arthur’s Pass demonstrate, these events can cause our tourism visitors to be inconvenienced along with our important exports of coal, milk and timber.

While we encourage growth in tourism and would like to see it more widely spread around the three districts, we also need to be mindful that other industries are important for the economic and social wellbeing of the West Coast. We will be looking at whatever investments and industries we can attract, and this includes activities such as the Buller Waste to Energy plant, potential hotel developments as well as upgrades to the infrastructure to enable more industries in Grey, and in Westland, our current tourism mecca in terms of spending, more investment in accommodation and infrastructure.

What does this mean? Well we must wait until the groups working on both the Growth Study and the Action Plans, which came out of the original study, report back. In the meantime, we at DWC will be looking at ourselves to see where we can better contribute to the region.

For perfectly valid reasons, Trustees have at times provided funding that was not envisaged by the Settlor. The Trustees will be looking at where DWC’s funding has been allocated and if there are better ways to support businesses while still supporting the community but in a more focused way. Watch this space...

PROSSER’S POINT There’s no room in this country for any company that puts foreign workers ahead of New Zealanders.

It’s been going on in the fishing industry for too long.

Right now there’s a NZ-listed fishing company that is seeking about a hundred crew for its NZ-flagged boat.

The advertisements are weighted in favour of Korean applicants. Of course they want their crew filled up with foreigners. We all know that’s when unscrupulous owners can bend the rules. It happens on land too.

Migrant workers are employed for 20 hours a week on the minimum wage, and then the rest of the time for cash, a low hourly rate and poor conditions.

Immigration NZ should not allow the fishing company’s request to employ foreign crew. There’s no excuse to favour foreign crew. The criteria should be New Zealand qualifications or their equivalent, and not specifically for Korean qualifications. We have people to crew ships, despite the Minister claiming otherwise in Parliament when we questioned. Although he did admit the system is not working too well at the moment. Time to fix it then.

Love comes to Westport O peratunity will take its Daytime Concert Series to Westport next month with ‘That’s Amore’, on March 27.

The group’s three tenors, Bonaventure Allan-Moetaua, Derek Hill and Kalauni Pouvalu, have been performing together within New Zealand and overseas for close to five years. Along with Soprano Susan Boland they will be bringing their

friendship, humour and talent to Westport.

Of Rarotongan heritage, Allan-Moetaua grew up in Wellington before studying singing at the University of Auckland. He has performed with Operatunity for over 12 years, starting with the Class Act Opera.

Hill is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal Canada where he graduated with high distinction in voice. Since his return to New Zealand, he has worked with most

of New Zealand’s Opera companies and orchestras, including New Zealand Opera, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

The youngest member of the group, Pouvalu is a New Zealand-born Tongan who has graduated from the University of Auckland and has been performing with Operatunity since 2014.

Pike River fundraiser

A

4WD and motorbike charity run for Pike River families who have been fighting to stop the mine entrance from being sealed will be held on March 18.

Already more than 70 drivers from Christchurch have indicated they will join the run and along with local support the numbers are expected to swell significantly.

The charity run will leave the Pike River Memorial at Atarau at 8.30am on Saturday, March 18 and travel up through Napoleon Hill and return to the access road gates.

It is being organised by the West Coast Mud Hunters to raise awareness of the struggle the mine families are going through, co-ordinator Shyanne Smith-Keith says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are supporting the families and showing them we are aware of what they are going through and for them standing up for what is right,â&#x20AC;? Ms Smith-Keith said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All funds will go to the families for legal fees and associated costs in travelling to Wellington.â&#x20AC;?

Registration for the charity run is $50 for a truck and $25 for a motorbike.

Possum Control Poison Warning Tasman Pest Control Ltd wishes to advise that a ground-based possum control operation will be taking place to keep possum numbers under control to prevent spread of the bovine TB disease. This operation will be conducted as a part of the TBfree New Zealand programme.

Areas covered: All approved land in the Inangahua, Inangahua Junction, White Cliffs, Oweka, Inangahua Landing, Rotokohu and Larryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Creek areas enclosed within the boundary described as follows: The Buller River forms the northern boundary, between Bens Bridge on SH 6 (2km south of the Iron Bridge) to about 2km east of Berlins.

The southern boundary is the Awarau or Larry River. The operational area includes all the farming areas at Three Channel Flat, Inangahua, Inangahua Junction, White Cliffs, Meadows Road, Oweka, Brown Creek Road, Inangahua Landing and Rotokohu.

No poison baits will be used within the immediate vicinity of Inangahua Township.

Operation date (approximately): 6 March to 30 May, 2017.

Poisoning methods, poison used and nature of poison: Possum habitats will be targeted using Potassium Cyanide Feratox pellets (in bait bags or bait stations). All poison baits are dyed green for bird protection and public notiďŹ cation.

The public is warned not to enter these areas and not to remove carcasses or baits. Baits are dangerous to people and dogs.

NEW CREEK POSSUM MANAGEMENT FIELD RESEARCH 2016-2017 Poison Warning: Landcare Research wish to advise the public that they intend to apply a vertebrate toxic agent as ground-laid pellet bait in four 100ha blocks off the Mackley Road 6km west of New Creek in the Buller Gorge.

Toxic bait will be applied by hand laying between February 24 and March 24, 2017. Within this range, the exact dates of bait application will be weather dependent. This is for a research trial investigating possum management.

Vertebrate Toxic Agent: Cereal pellet baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) and cinnamon lure will be applied to the ground by hand at rates approximating 1 kilogram of bait per hectare. The toxic pellets will be treated with deer repellent, which gives them a very dark green colour. No toxic bait will be applied within 20m of tracks or within 200m of boundaries with private land.

The public are reminded of the danger that toxic bait and possum carcases present, particularly to dogs. Depending on weather conditions, possum carcases may remain hazardous to dogs for up to six months. Warning notices will be posted at all access points to both areas, prior to any toxic bait being applied in either area.

Boer War restoration completed

A

plaque remembering Stafford man Oscar Bottom, who died in the Boer War in South Africa 117 years ago, has been restored and will soon be returned to the historic cemetery at the old gold town.

Trooper Bottom, 24, died three months after he was wounded at Ottoshoop, in Kimberley, South Africa, on November 10, 1900.

The following year a marble memorial was erected back home for him at the Stafford School, which he had attended. It was later taken to the cemetery, where it was found in recent years, broken and lying in the bush.

Heritage Hokitika has been restoring it in a project led by Charles Cowie.

The monument was officially unveiled in November, and since then the plaque has been restored.

Mr Cowie said the lettering had to be re-cut by hand.

It will be reinstated in early autumn.

The project is supported by the West Coast Community Trust, Hokitika Lions and the Westland District Council.

Tourists and locals say the floating golf challenge at Ross is great fun.

A FLOATING golf enterprise at Ross has swung into action.

Instigated by Hari Hari woman, Jill Waterman, the outdoor golfing venture at the Ross Lake teed off early in January.

In spite of continuous wet weather business picked up in between showers, Mrs Waterman said.

“The people in Ross have been so supportive and encouraging.”

Feedback from participants and spectators had also been positive, she said.

“Anyone who has never hit a golf ball can get the ball out there on their third or fourth shot — all age groups have a go and they say its such fun — so cool.”

The floating golfing platform was designed and built in the Waterman’s shed. It is secured in the 50m deep lake by 200litre drums.

Empire Hotel and attempt to whack golf balls 100m across the lake to the platform with two bunkers.

A one ounce gold ingot (mined in Ross) is up for grabs for a hole in one as well as many other prizes including glacier flights and $2000 cash.

Mrs Waterman sourced equipment from various places. The mats came from the Riccarton golf range in Canterbury and the floating golf balls are from a North Island distributor.

“They float and they hit just like a normal golf ball.”

A visiting American group was a bit sceptical, but after a swing or two they voiced their surprise that the floating golf balls hit “just like real golf balls”.

At closing time each day Mrs Waterman paddles her kayak and gathers the floating balls with a net. The task is made easier when the wind blows the balls to the shore.
