Bunnies on Broadway

Reefton was invaded by about 50 rabbits on Saturday, April 8.

The initial sighting had some locals wondering who framed Roger, or running to their gun safes, until it

was discovered they were the Bunnies on Broadway - locals dressed as bunnies who were doing a fundraiser for the Community Food Bank which is run by Reefton Who Cares Inc.

This fundraising crew had an Elves on Broadway last Christmas, but locals only

thought they had had too much eggnog when they saw them. The Elves raised $450 then, along with a huge amount of food donations.

In this R18 event, the Bunnies paid $20 to join, and starting at Alfresco's, made their way down Broadway to Dawsons over to

Hotel Reefton, then back up to Wilsons Hotel where they ended the night/early morning.

The whole event was deemed to be a great success and enjoyed by all.

"We raised $1548.70 for Reefton Who Cares Inc Food Bank fund, and had a great time," Hayley Burnham, one of the organisers said.

Full house for Karamea wearable arts

The remote rural township of Karamea came alive with creative ferment on Easter Saturday, with most of the region and many Easter visitors packing the old Hardware Store to take in the KaraWearable Arts Show and experience haute couture West Coast style.

The wearable art show was part of the Karamea Pop-Up Gallery Easter Art Exhibition, and the outfits worn in the show were on display before the event for people to examine before seeing them on the catwalk models. The show was timed to coincide with the busy Easter weekend, which attracts a lot of visitors and allows Karamea to show that our region has more to offer than stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, rivers, estuaries, forests, the Heaphy Track and the famous Oparara arches, caves and lakes, we also have a vibrant and artistic population of fun-loving folk who are proud of where we live and of our 700-strong community.

Fabulously fashionable creations were sewn, stapled, nailed, glued, woven and screwed together and modelled by Karamea's finest ladies and a few handsome lads. Karamean supermodels donned the fashionistas' fantastic creations and strutted their stuff on an S-curve catwalk that permitted much crowd interaction and feedback as the overwhelmed onlookers cheered, clapped and wolf-whistled their encouragement and appreciation. Traditionally, models are supposed to be straight-faced and aloof to deflect attention from themselves to encourage the audience to focus on their outfits, but our models danced, spun, twisted, twirled and beamed like Cheshire

cats to present their outfits with enthusiasm and infectious excitement.

Dairy farmers, schoolteachers, retirees, schoolchildren, parents, nurses and chefs became fashion designers for the occasion.

Natural materials collected from regional forests, beaches, rivers and estuaries, and rubbish that would otherwise be in a landfill were all utilised in the creative process. Everything was recycled/ repurposed/reused/renovated/restored, and, occasionally, ridiculous!

There were 39 wearable creations in the show, modelled by 16 locals. The youngest model was four years old, and the most senior was a sexagenarian! The show also attracted entries from Granity, and Buller Mayor Jamie Cleine visited the exhibition to check out the creations.

Before the fashion parade, 241 people visited the gallery on April 8 and 9, 2023, and many came back to see the show, which was standing-room only.

POPPY DAY APPEAL 2023

This Anzac Day marks 100 years since the foundation stone was laid for the Greymouth cenotaph. It was completed and officially opened in 1924.

RSA president Franco Horridge says the monument signifies an important part in West Coast history.

“Cenotaphs across the world were put up following the Great War. The Tainui Street location for our Greymouth cenotaph is a central point for everyone to remember the sacrifices of the soldiers during the Great War. The cenotaphs are a central point in New Zealand for Anzac day services."

It has constantly served as Greymouth's focal point of memorial on Anzac Day, Armistice Day and other special commemorations every year since it was unveiled.

"It also commemorates Armistice Day, World War 2 and the Vietnam War, and is a symbol of the sacrifices made by all defence personnel, and is a place to remember.,” Mr Horridge says. 

The following history of the Greymouth cenotaph was researched and written by Greymouth man Peter McIntosh.

Over 18,000 New Zealanders were killed on active duty during World War 1, most of them buried in foreign lands and more than a third with no known grave.

Such was the trauma inflicted by the war that in the aftermath, communities around New Zealand started to erect permanent memorials on an unprecedented national

scale to commemorate the fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, and medical personnel from their area who had been killed.

In the Grey district, a War Memorial Committee was established in June 1921 and it was decided that the Greymouth memorial would take the form of a cenotaph in following the lead of the memorial built in London.

Greymouth was one of 33 towns in New Zealand to adopt this war memorial form; the 472 other centres which built community war memorials most popularly chose, as well as various designs of statues, arches, towers, memorial gates and buildings.

By April 1922, the War Memorial Committee had £150 available towards a cenotaph to add to the efforts of the Greymouth Returned Servicemen's Association funds of £1000.

A public meeting held on the evening of September 26, 1922 decided upon the Tainui Street site for the cenotaph; known at that time as King's Garden, opposite the State school (later Grey Main and then Greymouth Intermediate).

On September 22, the town clerk Frank Denton called for designs and accompanying tenders from contracting firms for the construction of a cenotaph to serve as the Grey District Fallen Soldiers' Memorial.

Five tenders were received by the closing date of October 28, with the winning tender being awarded to Parkinson and Co of Auckland, for £850.

With April 25 already commemorated as a memorial day for the war since 1916, the date for completion of the cenotaph was set in the contract to be Anzac Day 1923.

On January 23, 1923, the Greymouth War Memorial Committee received word from the sculptors that they had nearly finished the granite portion of the memorial, but required the immediate supply of the details of the inscriptions to go on the bronze portion in order to have the memorial completed and shipped by Anzac Day.

The mayor of Greymouth, James D Lynch, noted that there had been difficulty in securing the names of the soldiers to be listed.

The Defence Department had been approached, but they had put the responsibility for locating the names of the fallen from the Grey district back to the War Memorial Committee.

It was decided that the area from which the names for the cenotaph be taken should be the Grey Patriotic District.

The inscription unanimously adopted, and subsequently included in two panels on the cenotaph, was:

"Remember with thanksgiving the true and faithful men who, in the years of the Great War, 1914 - 1918, went forth for God and right. The names of those who returned not again are here inscribed, to be honoured for evermore.”

The foundation stone for the Greymouth cenotaph was dispatched from Auckland by Parkinson and Co in mid-April via the steamship ss Wanaka, arriving well in time for its laying on Anzac Day 1923.

The day itself was sunny and there were large attendances at the various memorial

services around the town, including at the laying of the foundation stone ceremony of the memorial cenotaph by mayor Lynch.

The remainder of the cenotaph was constructed on site over the following months, and completed by mid-August 1923.

The Greymouth cenotaph itself was formally dedicated on Anzac Day 1924.

The unveiling was fittingly undertaken on the afternoon of April 25, 1924 by Greymouth's own local war-time identity, Brigadier-General William Meldrum, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O; himself a veteran of Gallipoli and a commander of New Zealand mounted rifle troops in the Egyptian and Palestine campaigns during the war.

Brigadier-General Meldrum was a Greymouth magistrate, and subsequently a mayor of Greymouth (1935-38) as well as president of the Greymouth RSA.

As part of the unveiling ceremony, a salute was fired by a squad of Territorials and the Last Post was sounded. 

This year the dawn parade formation will assemble outside the Greymouth RSA clubrooms and BP Service station in Tainui Street at 6.45am on Tuesday, April 25.

"There will be a short march to the cenotaph where the dawn service will be held,” Franco Horridge says.

“After, we will retire to the RSA for refreshments and everyone is invited and welcome."

Art in the Park 2023

Art in the Park 2023 will bring 42 exhibiting artists to Greymouth this weekend. While most are from the West Coast, many are from further afield as, increasingly, artists throughout the South Island are recognising the importance and popularity of this annual Greymouth art show. The exhibition will display a wide variety of styles and media including oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels, pen and ink, multimedia, textile, glass, pottery and garden art. The artists will be there too, happy to talk to exhibition visitors, several demonstrating on their stands.

The art on display will be for sale and range from large oils paintings for a few thousand dollars, to small and very affordable prints and items.

Colour tubes at Art in the Park

South Island artists from as far afield as the Marlborough Sounds and Queenstown will be among the 42 artists exhibiting at Art in the Park 2023 this weekend. Visitors will have the opportunity to join in, with a range of 'have a go' offerings for all ages, as described below. And the City of Christchurch Highland Pipe Band will be there again this year to give several rousing performances during the weekend.

Take Part in the Art Greymouth grey? No way. It's a town of high visibility vests, bold and beautiful sunsets, ever-green hillsides, colourful characters. And everyone can enjoy splashing bright colours at the variety of

hands-on have a go at activities at this year's Art in the Park.

Kidzone - Colouring, making stuff, fun with stamps, sticking things on to things, and more. The Left Bank Gallery will guide some fun ways to let the kids go creative in the Greymouth High School tech block while mum and dad enjoy the exhibition.

For 12- to 100-year-oldsit's colour! Colour on Canvas. Experiment. Paint, pens, inks, sprays, stencils, glitter.

"It's not about 'learning how to draw the best dog'," says organiser

Penny Kirk. "It's about having a go, curiosity, experimenting, trying something you've never tried before. The more mistakes, the better. It's how you discover and

Inspired by the Sights of the Sounds

learn. Ten minutes, several hoursit's up to you."

Everyone - Katabatic Breeze Tubes. Fun for individuals, groups, families or work with a total stranger to create a colourful artwork that will stand out - stream out - on the High School sports field once completed. What are they? Bright and breezy windsocks. They're made by painting a picture or design or message on to day-glo coloured kite material, which is stitched into a tube. A metal ring will hold one end open, the other closed, then mounted outside to catch the wind. Hopefully by Sunday afternoon there will be a forest of them out on the field.

TROY Warring's home is nestled into a remote bay in Pelorus Sound. "I spend a lot of time out on the water fishing. That magical early morning light, the reflections, colours and cloudscapes are ever-changing and inspirational," he says. The dreamlike, misty abstract landscapes Troy paints capture that magic. His clever use of light leads you into the painting, to tempt you to see what is just over the horizon.

Troy exhibited at Art in the Park last year. He had been 'dabbling' for years, but it was only a couple of years ago he decided to change career, focus on painting and sculpture. "Art in the Park was my first exhibition ever, and I was thrilled to bits by the reactions. People like what I'm doing! It gave me confidence to believe in myself."

He enjoys the challenge of working with oil paint. "The paintings have a habit of changing on me so I never quite know what I'm going to get. Each one is truly unique; I doubt very much I could repeat the same

painting twice and that suits me just fine."

As well as the wall art he will bring to Greymouth he will 'premier' a new concept he has been developing, an abstract, three-dimensional, four sided, tall, skinny column that can be turned or inverted at the owner's whim.

Coast FM's Lorna Riley calls on Coasters to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast

Broadcaster and Breast Cancer Foundation NZ ambassador Lorna Riley is encouraging West Coast locals to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast next month to support New Zealanders affected by breast cancer.

After going through breast cancer for a second time last year, Lorna, who hosts the daytime show on Coast FM, says Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a cause that is close to her heart:

"Through my shock diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and beyond, BCFNZ has been there alongside me with support, advice and wonderful resources. The charity doesn't receive any government funding, so hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a chance to help BCFNZ help so many of the women we love.

"It's also a great time to remind women to check their breasts and when they last had a

mammogram. Early detection is everything when it comes to this insidious disease, as I well know. So get to know your normal, book that mammogram if it's overdue, and get your friends and whānau to do the same."

Pink Ribbon Breakfast is the charity's biggest annual fundraising campaign and people can sign up at www.pinkribbonbreakfast. co.nz. Last year, 67,000 New Zealanders got

together with their friends, whānau and workmates at events to raise vital funds for BCFNZ's work in education, research and patient support.

As the most common cancer for New Zealand women, about 15 women in the West Coast region are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. For more information and to register to host a Pink Ribbon Breakfast, visit www.pinkribbonbreakfast.co.nz

Feel beautiful in Reefton

Bec Bierton has opened her beauty therapist salon called Aurora Beauty on Broadway, Reefton, taking over the shop vacated by Coral's Dressing Room.

Mr Brierton trained years ago in Australia, but put it on hold to raise her children.

"I've wanted to get back into it for a few years, and after moving to Reefton two years ago I saw the need for a full time beauty therapist," she said.

"I waited for a shop to become available and am blessed to be next door to Reefton's hairdresser, Simone Lindner, as we can complement each other."

Mr Brierton has named her salon after one of her daughters, who died when she was two weeks old.

"It feels like she's close to us."

Eleven-year-old Tarlia, one of Mr Brierton's daughters, along with her friend Ruby Aitken, have been helping with taking bookings while she is busy with a customer in the backroom, and Tarlia also does 'little ladies' nails.

"We've incorporated this so they can enjoy getting their nails done at the same time mum is."

Daughter Makaylah, 17, is in training to do pedicures and assists her mum.

"I wanted to create a space where everyone can come in and feel beautiful," Ms Brierton said.

String quartet on Coast

THE New Zealand String Quartet is set to play Barrytown, Reefton and Hokitika next month.

They will bring an eclectic and vibrant mix of music, and publicists say the tour programme has been designed using

the NZSQ's signature style of lively and engaging introductions to each piece of music spoken by the quartet members themselves. These introductions aim to illuminate the stories behind the music and make

this a special and engaging event for all audiences. From newcomers to the artform to the most seasoned chamber music fan, there is something to excite everyone. Having celebrated its 35th season in 2022, the New Zealand String Quartet has an

established international reputation for its insightful interpretations and compelling communication.

They will be at the Reefton Club on May 7, Barrytown on May 8, and the Regent Theatre in Hokitika on May 9.

Winter Warmth 2023

Buying tips on firewood selection

When to buy Spring and summer are the best times to buy firewood. Why buy so early? For wood to burn well and cleanly it needs time to dry. You can buy "unseasoned" wood and store it (in an area where air can circulate) ready for use when the cold weather arrives. If you leave it until later you may have to buy dry firewood - and pay more.

Type of wood

Softwoods like pine dry in around 6 to 12 months but burn rapidly. This means regularly adding wood to keep a cosy blaze going. "Old man pine" is from trees aged 30 years or more. It's denser than ordinary pine and contains more resin, so it burns for longer and puts out more heat.

Medium-density woods like macrocarpa burn a bit slower and contain more energy. If you have an open fire, avoid macrocarpa as it's prone to sparking.

Hardwoods such as gum and manuka make a better fire as they have greater heat content and burn slowly. But freshly felled hardwoods can take up to 18 months to dry.

Many suppliers also offer a blend of softwood and hardwood called "hot mix". The idea is to use softwood (usually pine) to get the fire started, then to add slow-burning hardwood once the room is warm. There is no standard ratio to hot mix so you should ask your supplier about proportions to make sure you're getting a good deal. In general, the more hardwood in the mixture,

the better.

Dryness

Only burn dry, well-seasoned wood. Green wood cools the fire, creating smoke that adds to air pollution.

Not sure if your wood is ready to burn? Firewood should have less than 25% moisture. You can test it by throwing a small piece onto hot glowing coals. If it catches fire on the top and sides within 1 minute, it's dry enough to burn well.

If you're buying wood to burn straight away, ask if it's dry. Green, wet firewood will not be "fit for the purpose" under the Consumer Guarantees Act - it won't burn properly and will clog up the flue. You can buy inexpensive moisture meters which let you check the moisture content of firewood you are about to buy or burn.

Woodburner

vs open fire

Modern woodburners are cleaner-burning and more efficient than open fires. An average woodburner is about 70% efficient, which means it transfers around 70% of the heat to the surroundings. With an open fire you'll be lucky to get 20%.

If a woodburner is permitted in your area, it's a pleasant way to reduce your electricity bill. Some models can be fitted with a wetback, to preheat water for the hot water cylinder, giving further savings.

Burning efficiently

Woodburners are almost twice as expensive to run as heat pumps, but you can reduce costs by making sure you're burning dry firewood

of the right size (less than 110mm in diameter) and burning cleanly by managing the amount of wood burning rather than turning down the air supply.

Firewood storage

Stack the firewood under cover or against a sheltering wall, and leave enough gaps for drying air to pass through.

Standard measurements

Comparing firewood prices from different suppliers can be a problem. While it's not illegal to sell landscaping products or firewood by description, how much is in a sackful of this, a trailer-load of that, the back of a ute of the other?

Known volume

We recommend buying bulk materials by a known volume - that is by the cubic metre for firewood, mulch, top soil and other materials.

A cord (equivalent to 3.6 cubic metres) is not a legal measure, although some suppliers we contacted for our survey still use it.

Firewood is sold as a "thrown measure" unless specifically stated otherwise. This means that the quantity of wood is measured as if it was thrown into a container, and not as if it was stacked. Stacking it will reduce the volume by about 1 3 (3 cubic metres of thrown wood is roughly equivalent to 2 cubic metres stacked).

Volume certification

Known volume is more exact, but accuracy is not guaranteed. How do you know that the scoop

of firewood dumped on your trailer is the volume you are charged for?

It is illegal for a supplier to say a scoop equals a specified volume unless the scoop's volume has been certified. Trading Standards will approve and certify that a firewood trader's vehicle holds a stated cubic metre volume. We recommend you buy firewood from such a trader.

There is also a certified 1 cubic metre measure. It was jointly developed by

Trading Standards and a Christchurch landscaping and garden supply business. The container is also certified to accurately measure smaller volumes of 1⁄3 and 2 3 of a cubic metre.

Win a free Showerdome!

Alot of the moisture in a house comes from shower steam causing foggy mirrors, wet walls and ceilings, and worn out paint, which can add significant costs to house maintenance.

A dry warm home is also a healthy

home, as damp surfaces are the perfect place for fungus and bacteria to grow, which can cause serious health problems. Showerdome reduces these problems, controlling steam, reducing condensation and making the home healthier and warmer.

Showerdome is a clear acrylic dome that simply attaches to the shower cubicle top to prevent steam forming in the bathroom. Steam happens when warm moist air mixes with cold air, so it acts as a barrier between those two air masses, which means no-steam forms in the shower or bathroom.

Mould and mildew are caused by humidity, and, beyond the strong smell and unpleasant aesthetics, can cause a range of allergies, eczema, inflammation and respiratory discomfort. The Ministry of Health identifies mould and dust mites as two of the most common causes of allergies, and both can result from moisture and dampness. One of the main sources of house humidity is the shower, which can make the bathroom and adjacent rooms damp and moist.

According to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), the average shower releases 1.5 litres of moisture into the air. In a home of four people, this represents 6 litres being released into the air daily. To prevent this, the EECA recommends putting a lid on shower cubicles to avoid dampness. Another major safety concern related to moisture is slippery floors; bathroom falls are among the leading causes of accidents in the home.

For more information or local dealers please visit www.showerdome.co.nz

Steamed mirrors, condensation on walls and ceilings, slippery floors and mould are year-round issues caused by shower steam, which can add significant costs to home maintenance. A dry warm home is a healthy home, as damp bathrooms are the perfect place for fungus and bacteria to grow, which can cause serious health problems. Showerdome® solves these problems by controlling steam, reducing condensation and making the home warmer, drier and healthier.

A Showerdome® shower top consists of a clear acrylic dome that prevents steam from forming when fitted on top of an existing shower box. With no on-going costs, it is the most effective investment one can make for a home or rental property. Showerdome® also makes mirror demisters and extractor fans redundant and could save the average household around $250 in annual energy costs.
