Mr Bryan officially retired from Kiwi Rail on July 31, and last week workmates and Kiwi Rail officials made a special presentation and farewell. Mr Bryan joined the NZ Railways in November 1972 and after attending the Railways Locomotive School in Christchurch for a year he transferred back to his hometown of Timaru. “I attended the school for about a year and was taught signalling and mechanical training so I could get my ticket to go on shunt duties. The second exam you were out on the mainline as an assistant on the diesel locomotives for NZ Rail. It boils my brain that I just missed the steam locomotive era and just missed going for my boiler ticket.”

Train driver reflects on a 50 year career

Retired locomotive driver Gilbert Bryan. PICTURE: Neville Roberts was going too. But things changed pretty quickly.” Mr Bryan says working in Greymouth was different from being stationed in Otira and brought a lot more freedom out on the lines. “In Greymouth it was single crew driving the DJ diesel locomotives, There was a lot more variety than just driving in Otira. I was driving the trains on all the lines up to Otira, Springfield, Reefton, Westport and down to Hokitika.” He has seen a number of changes during his time on the railways. “I started with NZ Rail, then Tranz Rail and finally Kiwi Rail, and various uniforms to go with the changes. I've been lucky, I have had a couple of close calls but nothing serious. “I really enjoyed my time – no regrets, a lot of laughs and worked with good people.“

While in Timaru he obtained his driver's ticket and worked there until transferring to Otira in 1980. “I was stationed there full-time and had a railway house. I was there for 19 years. My main job was on the electrics (electric train), which involved towing the trains through the Otira Tunnel to Arthur's Pass. “The Greymouth drivers would have a cup of tea and wait at Otira and the Christchurch crew would be at Arthur's Pass if they were running to time. The electric train had two drivers – one at the front and one at the back. I would be the driver on one end and normally Joe Goodman would be on the other. I was also driving the trains in Otira.” When a vacancy arrived in Greymouth, Gilbert decided that after 19 years in Otira it was time to make a move. “Otira was a full village when I first arrived there. There were a lot of railway personnel – six train drivers, fitters and turners, guards, shunters and the refresh (tearoom) girls. It was a thriving village with the Electricity Department and the Ministry of Works down the road, and the school

The holiday car rental experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have researched eight easy solutions to prevent holidaymakers from experiencing travelTravelsickness.sickness is caused by consistent movements during travelling and is found to be most common among children and pregnant women. Simple tips such as sitting at the front of the car and rolling down the windows can make a big difference to anyone who develops symptoms of headaches and dizziness. A spokesman said: “One of the biggest fears for travellers is getting travel sickness which could lead to a trip being ruined. “Using simple methods such as chewing gum and staying away from scrolling on your phone can relax symptoms such as nausea. “Following this essential advice can make all the difference for passengers and allow them to get to their destination with a peace of mind.” Here are eight helpful tips to prevent travel sickness:  Roll down the windows: Taking in the fresh air is vital when a passenger is experiencing sickness. Breathing in the fresh air can ease nausea symptoms. When travelling by plane, turn on the air conditioning to relax the sickness feeling.  Stay hydrated: Water is key to reducing the severity of a headache caused by travel sickness. Drink plenty and avoid the temptation of a glass of prosecco or fizzy drinks.

 Snack lightly: Avoid heavy and greasy foods on the journey. Choose some lightly salted snacks such as seaweed bites or dry crackers which won't disturb the stomach pains.  Play some good tunes: Distraction is one of the best ways to help your mind forget about the burden of travel sickness. Play your favourite songs on the radio at a low volume to focus your mind on something else other than feeling sick.  Bring a sick bag: A last resort option may be needed if you can't do anything to stop sickness. Having a sick bag on board can make you feel calmer, as you know there is another option available.

Eight simple hacks to stop travel sickness

 Get in the front seat: Whether it's in a family car-hire or a road-trip with friends, sitting at the front lets you focus on the road and minimise the likelihood of travel sickness.  Stay off the screen: As tempting as it can be, scrolling on social media can worsen headaches by straining your eyes from looking at bright screens. It's best to put the phone away until the end of journey.

Buller acting operations manager Jacob Fleming said there had been several more rockfalls along sections of the gorge that had also affected the southern section of walkway so it would remain closed for the foreseeable“Re-routingfuture.at Charming Creek Walkway isn’t a viable option at this stage for several reasons. However, over time it may be something that’s considered,” Mr Fleming said. “Geotechnical engineers have advised DOC that parts of the head scarp on many of the slips make it too dangerous for anyone to work below.”Thenorthern end of the walkway is open as far as the Mangatini Falls. Early last year DOC’s visitor and heritage team spent time upgrading the drainage and track surface of that section of track.

“This is obviously difficult news for everyone in the community to digest, including those who arent directly affected by the landslide report,” council chief executive Sharon Mason said.“We appreciate this may be distressing and may take some time to sink in. That is why our staff personally visited as many homes as possible to talk directly to residents “There was not a quick or simple fix. The land in question was owned by the Department of Conservation. Many parties were impacted, and many factors needed to be considered.”

The report from England and Company Ltd identifies residential and commercial properties that are either located in a high risk or medium risk zone. It outlines two types of landslides that might affect these properties.

The steep range inland of Granity is composed of granite which shows signs of fracturing and weakening in places. In general, the basement rocks (granite) are not exposed and are covered by a continuous soil layer. When it rains, the soil layer becomes heavier and weaker, until gravity eventually causes the soil, and potentially rocks, to slide. This is a translational landslide. The report says debris flow landslides can come from mountain stream overflow caused by heavy rain. When a stream or creek in a mountainous area becomes swollen it erodes its banks and the debris material (rocks, soil and vegetation) is carried downslope by fast, energetic water flow. Often there is more debris than water and this is termed a debris flow. In extreme rainfall events, the debris from a translational landslide can transform into a debris flow, particulary if the landslide debris enters a high energy stream bed. Ten Granity properties have been identified as being at high risk of inundation damage from debris flows. For people living in those dwellings there is a possible risk of harm and it is likely that those buildings will be damaged by debris flows in the future. Fifteen properties and a number of other outbuildings are located within the medium risk zone, where property damage may also occur. Four residential dwellings and the Granity Museum are located within the high-risk zone. That means they are considered at high risk of impact damage, which could result in harm to people and property. It is estimated that, in the 50-year life of a building, there is a 57% chance of a building in that zone being damaged. There is a 0.085% per year chance of a fatality, or approximately one death every 10,000 years due to landslides in the high risk zone. About 20 residential dwellings are located within the medium-risk zone. The report says some properties may be at risk from both types of landslides. A slip around a house at Granity. The house sustained no structural damage.

The Buller District Council has contacted property owners and residents at Granity to discuss the risk of slips identified in a recent report. During the February flooding event, Granity and nearby Ngakawau experienced landslides, one of which redirected a watercourse through and around several houses, the Granity Museum and under State highway 67 and the Kiwi Rail networks. As a result, the council commissioned a report to assess the landslides to better understand the ongoing risk to life and property.

Aspecial train could leave Greymouth next year to mark the centennial of the Otira Tunnel.August 4, 2023, will celebrate one of New Zealand's greatest engineering and political achievements.OtiraTunnel Commemorations 2023 co-ordinator Diane Gordon-Burns said while the work was still in very draft form with ideas evolving a year out from the celebration, the committee's plans were chugging on. They hoped trains would run from both the east and west coasts, she said. Carriages would be added to the Tranz Alpine bring people from Christchurch and Kiwi Rail would run a train from Greymouth if seats could be filled to cover costs. At this early stage, it was envisaged there would need to be 120 people at $300 per person.“People should get in touch with me if they think they will be interested in catching a train from Greymouth on the day,” Dr Gordon-Burns said. Buses will take visitors from Otira to the tunnel mouth where people will alight to the sounds of Nigel Mehrtens of Hokitika on the bagpipes. Speeches, ribbon cutting, cake cutting, plaque and panel unveiling, slide and video viewing of photos and films of the day, guided walks will all be part of the day's Festivitiescelebrations.willalsobe held at the Arthur's Pass end of the tunnel on the Saturday, with a ball at the Bealey, and a band and hangi back at Otira. All primary schools and early childhood centres on the West Coast would be invited to paint a mural on the subway at Otira. Dr Gordon-Burns said the tunnel had been political because last century the North Island wanted any and all available funds for train tracks and tunnels there.“The Otira Tunnel was hard fought for.”

A photograph of a winning West Coast tennis team from the 1960s has survived, thanks to some luck. Greymouth man Eddie Gray apparently came across it while out for a run, many years ago. He gave it to Moe Bowes, who gave it to Ian Tennent. Mr Tennent said the senior representative team beat Canterbury at Wilding Park in March 1966.

THE West Coast Regional Council has awarded the operational and management contracts of both the Inchbonnie and Camelback quarries to Rosco Contractors Ltd. The council invited tenders for these contracts in July following a pause in all its quarry operations earlier this year to allow staff to reassess internal processes. Keri Harrison, Tui Creek Consulting, had been engaged to carry out this process. Ms Harrison said three tenders had been received for the Inchbonnie quarry and four tenders for Camelback, with a detailed tender evaluation process undertaken. “Overall, the tenders received were of an extremely high standard with noticeable time and effort demonstrated by the tenderers. I would like to thank the tenderers who participated in the process.” Two tender reports were tabled at the public excluded session of the council meeting held at the Arahura Marae last week. The regional council manages quarries across the region to supply rating districts with rock, to maintain river and coastal protection work. Both the Camelback and Inchbonnie quarries are strategic rock resources for the West Coast. The council will also supply rock to individual customers in the future.

Shorter whitebait season this year

DOC's whitebait fishery manager Nick Moody says the new season dates will help to reduce fishing pressure on all whitebait, especially the most threatened species, and ensure the whitebaiting season is consistent throughout New Zealand. “Whitebait are taonga and mahinga kai for Maori and provide a much-loved recreational pastime for New Zealanders. However, four of the six whitebait species are classified as threatened or at risk of extinction from a variety of causes including habitat loss and barriers to their migration.“Ourgoal is to ensure healthy and restored whitebait populations and provide equitable access to a sustainable and thriving fishery. We want to ensure the decline is reversed. No one wants to see whitebait go extinct,” Nick MoodyPreviously, says. the majority of New Zealand's whitebaiting season ran from August 15 to November 30, while the West Coast season ran from September 1 to November 14. The new whitebaiting season dates were first announced in June 2021 as part of a three-year rollout of changes to whitebaiting regulations, following two years of public engagement.Thesechanges included creating new whitebait refuges introduced in Abel Tasman National Park and the southern part of Fiordland National Park, and changes made to the regulations on fishing gear and fishing methods.“Thisyear we will continue the work we began last season on gathering data to help us better manage the fishery. Expect to see us out on the river counting the number of fishers and their methods during the season,” Nick Moody says. “We are really keen to engage with fishers and the wider community and will provide fishers with opportunities to give feedback on the implementation of new regulations and quality of their fishing experience.”Thenationally standardised shorter season will reduce fishing pressure on the most threatened species of whitebait during their peak migration period. Visit DOC's website for information on the whitebaiting season including the new regulations: www.doc.govt.nz/whitebaiting

Buller bins to be removed, renewed

AS part of a review of its public bins network, the Buller District Council will replace 11 old rubbish bins and remove 12 bins across the district.Three bins at the Reefton Skate Park, one at the King George Park, and one in Crampton Park in Reefton will be replaced. One bin at the Buller Bridge, one at the Granity car park, and four bins at Victoria Square in Westport will be renewed.Fourbins at the Orowaiti in Westport will be removed due to ongoing misuse to dump household rubbish. One bin near the Westport Motel in Palmerston Street will be taken out for the same reason. At Tauranga Bay, two bins will be removed, leaving two bins for visitors. At Carters Beach one bin will be taken out, leaving three bins for the public to use while enjoying the reserve and track. In Granity one rubbish bin at the car park will be pulled out. One recycling bin in Reefton near the public toilets has reached its end of life and will also be removed due to ongoing misuse. Westreef Services Ltd is contracted for the maintenance and emptying of all bins and will complete the removal and replacement. Buller District Council’s acting group manager community services Krissy Trigg says: “Most of the bins that will be removed are very old and not fit for purpose any more”. Many of these bins are also misused to dump household rubbish. Continuing to finance these misused rubbish bins is creating unsustainable ongoing costs to ratepayers. “In some areas bins were doubled up and it made sense to consolidate the number of bins available for visitors.” A single bin at North Beach in Westport and one bin in Hector will be pulled out due to the external funding having ceased. “Most councils and Department of Conservation groups are removing public litter bins in reserve areas to encourage visitors to reduce waste and follow the ‘leave no trace principle’,” Ms Trigg says. “We acknowledge this is just the first step, and there will be further education done to encourage residents and visitors to minimise and dispose of their waste correctly.”

Tenders awarded for council quarries

Starting this year, the whitebait season will take place from September 1 to 30 October throughout New Zealand in an important step towards a sustainable whitebait fishery, says the Department of Conservation. The Chatham Islands are an exception to the new regulations and will retain their whitebaiting season of December 1 until the last day of February.
