Dunganville silver tray donated to museum A
silver tray etched in Dunganville history was presented to History House Museum recently after many years in the care of descendants of Annie Jane McKechnie. The silver tray was presented to Miss McKechnie by the residents of Dunganville on the eve of her wedding to John George Willams in December 1902, as a token of esteem. Miss McKechanie is the grandmother of
Lorraine McLeavey (nee Williams) and Venna Seymour. Grandson-in-law Zismore Lurajud was also there to present the silver tray to Liz Burke, library and museum services manager for the Grey District Council. Annie’s father was Willam Taylor McKechnie who was born in 1832 in Dundee, Scotland and migrated to the West Coast as a young man, settling in Liverpool Gully near Maori Creek in 1865. Mr McKechnie became manager of the
business of Messrs Russell and Hamilton at Maori Creek, which included a hotel, a store, a butchery, for six years, and subsequently in 1870 acquired the business for himself. He was elected to the Grey County Council in 1883 and was chairman on two occasions as well as being a member of the Grey Harbour Board, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the Brunner Aid Board, and assisted greatly the Grey River Hospital fund. He had six children, with Annie his oldest

Miss McKechnie had been a friend to young and old at Dunganville for many years. “It’s fitting we leave the silver tray to people of the West Coast,” Lorraine McLeavey said. “We had decided what we would do with it and where it could end and I think the West Coast is it’s rightful place.” Mrs McKechnie lives in the Kapiti Coast along with her sister Venna Seymour and Zismore Lurajud now resides at Timaru.
