Steam punk comes to Granity G n by Rose O'Connor
ranity is set to be put on the map if new resident Phil Hyde has a say. He arrived in Granity six months ago as part of an exploratory tour of New Zealand looking to find a base. "I arrived in Granity and it felt like 'home.' The people are awesome – so friendly and welcoming. There is such great community spirit." Phil's grandparents, Rev Archie and Zola Simpson, were Presbyterian ministers at Granity in the 1950s. His mother Beverley and uncle Noel attended the local primary school. However, Phil had never visited the village until recently. Now that Phil is comfortably settled beside Granite Creek, he is busy putting his three projects into action. "I ran a radio station in Whanganui for about 10 years, Dagsy FM. I'm just waiting to get the electricity sorted, hook it up to the laptop and away it goes. It should be up and running in the next few weeks." He hopes to have his next two projects under way within a few months. "I'm into steam punk art. When I lived on Waihi a friend gave me a mask and told me to decorate it. I really enjoyed it and I've carried on. I specialise in masks and hats," Phil said.
