Farm boy heads for bright lights Although Stanley Reedy sees his time in Auckland as a way to get out of weekend milkings, he is really a farm boy at heart as he spends time with Jessie the farm dog. PICTURE: Rose O’Connor-Neilsen

Westport youth has the perfect excuse to get out of spring morning milkings on his family’s dairy farm at Nine Mile. Stanley Reedy, 14, is set to miss calving and compulsory weekend milkings when he takes up the coveted role of ‘Michael’ in the Auckland Theatre Company’s (ATC) ASB season of ‘Billy Elliott the Musical’ this September. Stanley is in Auckland during the school holidays for a two week ‘Billy Boot Camp’ where he will learn much of the character of

the role including the dancing component, he will then relocate to Auckland for rehearsals and the production from September until the end of November. Stanley said he would need to learn much of the dialogue and dance for his part prior to his move to Auckland. He is being helped by his Westport dance teacher, Beryl Collins. Stanley has been dancing at the Beryl Collins’ School of Dance since he was eight. He said that he was “pretty excited” to have won the role following initial auditions in Christchurch and a follow-up in Auckland. “It is a good opportunity and a great chance to work and dance with other boys, as there

are not many boys dancing in Westport — and it gets me out of weekend milkings,” he said. Billy Elliott is set in a northern English mining town during the 1984 miners’ strike. It is the inspirational story of a young boy who struggles against the odds to realise his dream of becoming a dancer. Stanley’s mother Deb Coleman said where Stanley and the two other boys from outside Auckland who had roles in the production would be living had yet to be confirmed, but they would be chaperoned. Overall, six boys have been selected, with three chosen for the role of the main

character Billy Elliott and three for his best friend Michael. The boys will perform on rotation due to the heavy demands placed on the performers. They will train six days a week with just one day off, while fitting in school work under the supervision of a tutor. “Stanley’s contract includes flights to and from Auckland with some for family to support him during the rehearsal and performances, as ATC recognises how hard it will be for the boys to be living away from home,” Ms Coleman said. Young Reefton Catholics help others by Trevor Johns

P

upils from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Reefton have made a special presentation to senior residents of the town. Twenty-one members the school’s Young Vinnies group, the junior fraternity of the St Vincent de Paul Society, recently presented a collection of musical instruments and blankets to the residents of Ziman House. The young Vinnies collected almost $1300 to purchase the items, with donations from local businesses and by holding a silent auction. West Coast District Health Board operations manager Hamish Brown, said it was wonderful to see what the Sacred Heart pupils had achieved to help brighten the days of the residents — particularly when the project was unsolicited and was the pupils’ own idea. “It not only brings joy to the residents but also helps expand the health budget,” Mr Brown said. Sacred Heart principal Jill Cogger said the Reefton Young Vinnies were the only group of their kind on the West Coast and they used their membership to help the needy and elderly in their community. “They learned a lot through this activity, especially when soliciting donations from individuals and businesses in town. They became much more confident as the project progressed,” Ms Cogger said. Before presenting the musical instruments and blankets the Young Vinnies performed a couple of musical items before pupil Rose Mason Collins recited a poem she had written for the occasion. In response 14 residents used their brand new musical instruments to serenade the pupils. Ziman House caregiver Christine Archer said the presentation by the Young Vinnies was wonderful. “The instruments will be much appreciated and used by the residents here, especially as a winter activity,” she said.

Westport farm boy heads for Auckland bright lights Continued from P1 Stanley, who has a twin brother Jack, is also an accomplished rugby and hockey player, having represented Buller. He attends Buller High School, with Jack and older sister Sara. Sara is an aspiring dancer herself hoping to earn one of 25 places in the National Academy for Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA) in Christchurch next year. Stanley also hopes to go to NASDA in the future and with his role in Billy Elliott on his CV, it looks a strong possibility. His father, Johnny Reedy Junior, is really proud of what Stanley has achieved — although Mr Reedy is now missing a valuable rugby player from the U14 team he coaches. Stanley is not allowed to play any sports until the production is finished, but it is a commitment he is prepared to make to help realise his dreams.

Buller couple celebrate 60 years

Del and John O’Connor have just marked 60 years of marriage.

J

ohn and Del O’Connor of Westport celebrated sixty years of marriage on June 30, in a quiet family gathering at Archer House. They say the secret to their long marriage is the wonderful support they have received from their family, parish and local community over the years and for which they are very grateful. John O’Connor married Adelma Corby at the Seddonville Catholic Church in 1956. John’s brother Fergus was best man, with farmer and friend Chris McDonnell groomsman. Del’s cousins, Diane Dobbs (nee O’Brien) and Ann Watson (nee Corby) were the bridesmaids. Mrs O’Connor was the youngest of three daughters to Seddonville dairy farmers Jack and Ann Corby. Mr O’Connor was from Appleby in the Nelson area, the ninth of ten children of Rod and Winifred O’Connor.

Mr O’Connor arrived in Buller in 1946, having just left Nelson College, to take up a dairy farm at the Loopline in the Buller Gorge, milking 20 cows. Later, he and brother Eamon sharemilked for their uncle Eddie McPadden at the Buller bridge, before John returned to the Buller Gorge farm in 1952. Mrs O’Connor began her schooling in Seddonville before boarding at Sacred Heart College in Christchurch, where she was named Dux and Head Girl. Following school, she returned to Seddonville to help on the family farm. Mrs O’Connor met her future husband through the Westport Athletics Club. They were both talented athletes winning numerous Buller, West Coast and Mahar Cup places and titles. Mr O’Connor recalls they first went out after

Westport had won the Mahar Cup in February 1955. On their honeymoon they toured the South Island in a car borrowed from Mr O’Connor’s brother Kerry before settling at the Loopline. They remained living on that farm until building a new house in 1976 closer to Westport in the Crossroads area, where they live today. The O’Connor’s had seven children: Damien, Leanne (Cunliffe), Johno, Peter (died at birth), Frances (Carmine), Gerard and Bede. They are enormously proud of their twenty grandchildren who they have had great pleasure watching grow up and following their sporting and academic pursuits. They are still regular spectators at rugby, basketball, netball, hockey and dancing. They have been fully involved in community groups and the farming industry, with Mr

O’Connor serving a total of 48 years as a director on Buller Valley, Karamea and Westland dairy companies. Mr O’Connor was made an Officer of the NZ Order of Merit in 1997 for services to farming and the community. He was awarded a Nuffield Scholarship in 1963, spending six months visiting farms mostly in the United Kingdom. He chaired the dairy section of Federated Farmers from 1970–74 as well as serving on Buller and West Coast committees. He was a keen rugby player, playing for White Star, Westport and United over the years, representing Buller at the junior level. He has been a stalwart of the Labour Party with son Damien the current West Coast-Tasman MP. Mr O’Connor still actively farms on the dry stock block at the Crossroads and Mrs O’Connor said he has no plans to retire.

Kiwi tree magic by Paul McBride JOHN Phillips’ inspired ‘kiwi trees’ are turning heads at his nursery in Preston Road, Greymouth. Mr Phillips came up with the idea to style the conifer trees into a kiwi formation — and the tree birds are becoming a talking point with visitors. “People are quite taken by them and somewhat gob smacked when they look up and see the kiwis while

at the nursery,” Mr Phillips said. “It is certainly something different for the nursery.” The trees were originally being shaped in a pyramid shape but after running a wire between each plant Mr Phillips started training them into the shape of kiwis. “They linked after a year, the trees are a conifer and are called Thuya old gold trees,” Mr Phillips said. “It’s an annual pilgrimage up the ladder to shape our kissing kiwis.”

Westport book-a-rama by Rose O’Connor-Neilsen in Westport

T

he Westport Rotary Club Book-a-rama is back for the 13th year by popular demand, a week today. The event is being held at the Westport Clock Tower Chambers beginning with an ‘Early Bird Special’ on Wednesday 20 July from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Convenor Ross Cocker said about 170 people queued for the ‘early bird’ session last year and left with bargain books and magazines as well as other donated items including jigsaws, DVDs and CDs. The book-a-rama venue will also be open on July 21 and 22, from 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm. Mr Cocker said that last year’s Book-a-rama had about 13,000 books for sale and raised over $14,500. “We are hoping to raise a similar amount this year,” he said. Much of the money raised would be donated to

local causes including Homebuilders Child and Family Support Services and Buller Big Brother Big Sisters youth programme. Each of the three West Coast Rotary clubs would also donate $5000 to the Lend A Hand Foundation, with Trustpower matching dollar for dollar. Mr Cocker said that $10,000 was then specifically used to support individuals and small groups in the wider Buller District. “Over the past five years alone, the foundation’s trustees have approved over 140 applications and grants totalling more than $70,000 have been distributed back into the wider Buller area,” Mr Cocker said. Rotary was always grateful for the huge response from the community in delivering books and related goods to the drop-off points at New World, Countdown, Coaltown, NBS and Take Note. “But we are always happy to collect donations if people are unable to get the books and goods there,” Mr Cocker said. The Greymouth Rotary Club’s Book-a-rama is also being held from July 21–23.

NEW OPTIONS IN COAST FUEL

R

D Petroleum have just appointed Gavin Hartwig as West Coast Territory Manager for the company’s bulk fuel supply service. RD Petroleum have expanded their operation on the West Coast and Gavin, who has a background in farming and sales, takes up the position. “I was working in a rural supply centre in Takaka when the position became available and I thought it was an ideal opportunity to come back to the West Coast. I worked for Evan Birchfield for 8 years when I was living in Ross and prior to that I was farming in the Manawatu region” Gavin says. RD Petroleum operate a truck stop fuel site at Kaiata Park and provide a premium delivery service for rural, farm and commercial customers. The company pride

themselves on being fast, efficient and costeffective. “At RD Petroleum, customers can choose to order fuel at a time and volume which suit their particular needs,” Gavin says. “We can provide a fuel delivery service that your business can depend on. Having a farming background, I know farmers need a supplier they can rely on to be there when they say they will. We have a tanker based full-time here on the West Coast and at present I’m fulfilling 2 roles — Territory Manager and tanker driver — so customers will have the advantage of dealing with one person for all their requirements.” RD Petroleum commenced operating in 2005 and have experienced consistent growth over the past decade. The company was established to provide professional, competitive and service-driven distribution of fuel and oil products throughout the South Island. RD Petroleum have been breaking new ground on the West Coast and are here for the long haul, providing fuel and support to rural and commercial customers. Tougher times for farmers mean keeping a tighter rein on costs and fuel is one significant yet necessary on-farm cost where savings can be made. Gavin advises customers to take advantage of the RD Petroleum fuel card, which represents savings through discounted fuel, and can assist with cash flow, by allowing the user to purchase fuel on credit. RD Petroleum’s fuel card users do not incur any annual or transaction fees, and receive discounted fuel

Gavin says he is looking forward to being the ‘go to person’ for RD Petroleum West Coast: “I’m really enjoying being back on the Coast and being out in the rural sector providing the very best products and service for our customers.” If you are interested in checking your fuel pricing then give Gavin a call today, he can be contacted on 027 472 2997.

COASTERS say... All predictions are for the West Coast to see an increasing deluge of tourists in the next few years, with hotels already reporting group bookings until 2019 and various hotel projects in the offing. “I think it is great for the Coast. It will create more jobs and be good for all the Coast towns. We need more Government assistance for infrastructure though.”

“I’m all in favour of it happening and there’s no question that it will, especially with the increase in Chinese tourists. We do need help to establish a major organisation to assist the Coast in its tourism development.”

“An increase in tourist numbers must be good long as Greymouth was the point of destination. There must also be the infrastructure in place if there is a push for more tourists.”

“I think tourism is good for the Coast as long as we have the infrastructure to support the increase in numbers.”

Afghanistan: The Soldier’s Story AFGHANISTAN: The Soldier’s Story, which is coming to the West Coast, was the original idea of Corporal Aaron Horrell, a patrol 2IC who was on his second New Zealand Defence Force deployment to Afghanistan in 2012. He approached Dave Asher, of South Coast Productions, to see if a film could be made of the 20th rotation of our soldiers, to document what the modern day era of soldiers’ contributions and sacrifice looked like.

Moroccan M orocca Chicken & Pumpkin Casserole Fresh NZ Beef Topside Roast/ Steak

Dave Asher edited the film and said it was an insight into what soldiers are asked to do. “It is a very emotional film and the stories that come out make it emotional. We had to edit and cut to have the soldiers’ story — that’s how it was shaped and based around that. “While our request to visit Afghanistan was declined, we were able to supply Aaron with camera equipment to film his tour that was approved by the New Zealand Defence Force.

“As Aaron’s tour evolved, he recorded footage of day-to-day life for our soldiers.” However halfway in to his tour, tragedy struck — twice — with the deaths of five of his comrades and the serious wounding of six of his fellow soldiers in two separate incidents. They were to be defining moments for his deployment. Strong images from these incidents were captured. “When Aaron’s deployment finished and he returned to New Zealand, we had to re-evaluate the storyline. “We had valuable footage from before these fatal events, so now had to look at how we could integrate the families of the fallen to show the full level of loss, both for the country and within their family unit. SuperValue.co.nz/ Recipes “We agreed the brief was to remain focused on the input of this generation of New Season Hass Avocados servicemen and women to this country and the ramification of that service. “What ensued was a twoyear negotiation with the New Zealand Defence Force to release the footage, of which they held the copyright for.

“Approval was received at the beginning of 2016.” The documentary is told through firstperson accounts, backed by footage from the actual engagements and re-enactments vetted by the soldiers to remain true to the event, linked by narration. Families are involved through interviews, re-living the emotions surrounding their family member’s departure to Afghanistan, and the inevitable complexities for the families of those who returned and those who did not. Afghanistan: The Soldiers’ Story will screen at the NBS Theatre in Westport on Saturday July 23 at 7.30pm, Hokitika Regent Theatre on Sunday 24 at 3pm and 7.30 pm and at the Greymouth Regent Theatre on Monday 25th at 7.30pm.

he tourism industry is now accepted as one of the main drivers of our West Coast economy. It wasn’t always and prior to the 1980s the glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef were main attractions to our region. Many other fantastic facilities and experiences have been developed over the last 30 years to make the West Coast one of the most unique and diverse visitor experiences in New Zealand. From cave rafting, mountain biking, to five star accommodation, we have it all. The cold hard reality for everyone in our tourism industry, is the glaciers still are the single biggest draw card. Without them we would be unlikely to attract the same level of interest or visitor numbers. They have been the most accessible glaciers in the world, rising up from temperate rainforest to the tallest Southern Alps, off our main state highway. That magical combination has served us all well. But because of glacial retreat, access to both the glaciers can only safely be

achieved by helicopter. The historical pictures of finely attired ladies and gentlemen wandering onto the ice has been replaced by well equipped and prepared guides and clients paying considerable sums to touch and feel the ice. The number of helicopter flights to transfer the thousands of clients each year is under review and constant scrutiny by people who don’t understand the challenges of safe tourism management. This could become a bottleneck in an otherwise increasing number of visitors to the West Coast. While The Department of Conservation considers options for future growth, I believe we need to think laterally about the challenge. In the 1980s a concept for a gondola was promoted for the Franz Josef Glacier. It failed to make progress for a number of reasons. Access onto the glacier was not an issue. Tourism numbers were a fraction of today’s and the capital cost was prohibitive. All these things have changed and I believe we need to reconsider such a concept urgently. While it would not give access to the ice, it would ensure people travelling to our region would be able to have a genuine glacial mountain experience in a safe and affordable way. If the numbers of tourists from Asia arrive as predicted they need safe, less adventurous access to the experiences that make the West Coast unique. Our glacier experience is one such experience and if we can’t guarantee that, those tourists may chose to go elsewhere. We can’t risk further loss of opportunities and we must consider a gondola as a possible solution to the challenge of glacier access. It’s time to look at all options.

Rare Buller skink taken to safety by Rose O’Connor-Neilsen in Westport

M

oving from Granity to Auckland might not seem such a big step but it is huge if you are only 6cms long and a cobble skink. The skink is unique to a short stretch of northern Buller coastline around Granity, and was only discovered in 2007. It was recognised as a distinct species in August 2015. However, when the population was surveyed again in January, it had declined to an alarming level. Herpetalogist Tony Jewell estimated that only 30 to 40 remained. The Department of Conservation took action and in May removed as many of the skinks as they could capture over a two to three week period. An ongoing recovery programme is continuing and so far 26 have been removed, according to Westport DOC diodiversity specialist Scott Freeman. They have now been temporarily rehoused at Auckland Zoo until DOC can decide where to re-establish the population. He said Sounds Air and Air NZ had been very helpful in flying them to Auckland. Co-owner of Big Fish-Miners on the Sea, Phil Perrott, watched the recovery project. He said that a team of three had set up clear plastic cup traps, which were buried in the cobbles using pear as bait. Mr Perrott said that high seas and erosion

along the beach had impacted on the skink habitat which was thought to have resulted in the decline of the species and the mass removal of the rest. A Niwa report earlier this year suggested that the coastline was eroding at a rate of 60-

80cm each year. Mr Freeman confirmed that forecast high spring tides and swells for May meant the project was undertaken urgently. The distinctly different species of skink has large eyes, thought to be useful for burrowing

between the cobbles or beach stones. Mr Freeman said it was not to be confused with the speckled skink which was more commonly found in the area. He said that while they looked quite similar they had different genetic make-ups.

G ateway enabling students to experience real workplaces

Career in the pipeline Mathew MacKenzie is in his last year of high school and in his second year of working alongside Paul Tomasi at Tomasi Plumbing and Drainlaying. Mathew stumbled upon his knack for plumbing while doing some volunteer work. He has been pursuing this trade through his studies and work experience ever since.

Mathew MacKenzie

The Gateway Programme and Tomasi Plumbing have allowed him to build on his skills and gain handson experience which is crucial when learning the plumbing trade. He loves working on brand new homes, seeing the houses take shape from beginning to completion, and working alongside the other tradesmen involved in the build.

Tomasi Plumbing and Drainlaying has been servicing the West Coast for over 20 years. They cover everything from household and domestic plumbing, drainlaying, fire installation and heating. This range of services has allowed Mathew to build up a vast skill set which has set him up for a career in his chosen field.

The power of work experience Brad Campbell is in year 12 and is figuring out his career path. To assist Brad in finding his footing he has been gaining experience through the Gateway Programme at ElectroNet for the last 6 weeks. This is Brad’s first time out in the field and he is really enjoying the experience. He is gaining knowledge on how a power company works, in particular the lines. His favourite parts of the job are getting out and about and working with a great team. ElectroNet has been involved in Gateway for over 10 years. They find the programme gives them a great insight. The team enjoys handing down knowledge and helping students gain expertise.

“They get to know us and we get to know them. It’s better than a job interview” says Health and Safety Co-ordinator, Robyn Scott. The programme also allows the students to learn the safety aspects of the job. “Safety is key, it gives them a good induction period and they can possibly move on to become an apprentice”. The Gateway programme has so far lead to five apprenticeships within the ElectroNet company. ElectroNet is a one stop shop for electricity; ElectroNet Services, ElectroNet Transmission and Mitton ElectroNet cover everything from designing, building and maintaining power systems and substations. From

generating power through to wiring homes. ElectroNet is the only company in New Zealand that can provide this full range of services. The people of the West Coast own all the ElectroNet branches in New Zealand and the success of the business is returned to the people of the West Coast. There are a total of 260 employees in the business. 130 of these are right here on the West Coast. ElectroNet is a tremendous asset for the community and a great place for our students to gain hands on knowledge and expertise in many facets of electricity which could lead to a career and could keep them right here on the West Coast or provide endless opportunities for career advancement.

Brad Campbell

In the right gear – wheels in motion for a career as a mechanical engineer

Bradley Krakoksy

Bradley Krakoksy is in year 12 and already knows what he wants to be. He has his sights set on becoming a Mechanical Engineer. To assist him in this direction Bradley has been gaining work experience through the Greymouth High School Gateway programme at Liddells Contracting. Bradley has been gaining experience for over a year. He enjoys metal fabrication, metal building and welding. He realised from an early age he had a passion for metal fabrication. His brother would bring home old bikes and they would pull them apart in the

attempt to put them back together, calling upon inspiration from growing up watching TV series American Chopper. Liddells Contracting has been operating for 20 years and offers expertise and services in the areas of general engineering, civil construction, crane hire, design and draughting. For the past 10 years Liddells have been involved in the gateway programme providing work experience for many students over that time. Liddells Contracting enjoys assisting students to find their footing and would recommend the programme to other businesses.

Gateway can lead students into employment as it has done for 3 students who have all gained apprenticeships at Liddells Contracting. Anna Liddell knows all too well the importance of work experience. She started gaining work experience after school and then immediately started her career in the workshop straight after finishing High School; over the years she has worked her way up to become the Operations Manager. She finds the Gateway process rewarding. “I don't see how you are going to get young people trained without experience.”

If you are a business who would like to benefit from this programme contact the Gateway Co-ordinator for more information on 03 768 0472

Silver Fern to return T

he distinctive Silver Fern railcar will make a return visit to the West Coast in September. Built by Kawasaki and Toshiba, originally three Silver Ferns were introduced to New Zealand in 1972 to replace the Blue Streak railcars which had successfully run on the North Island Main Trunk for a number of years and to encourage passengers back to rail transport due to competition from air and road transport. The class was named the ‘Silver Ferns’ because their exterior was made of corrugated stainless steel. Their last regular passenger runs were to the cities of Rotorua and Tauranga until the early 2000s when they were withdrawn

and made available for charter. The Dunedin Railways tour will leave on September 5 and stops in Ashburton for the night before heading for Greymouth. Day three the train will travel to Westport with the tour members on board. At Westport they will visit the Denniston Mine, and the one-way trip back to Greymouth will be offered to West Coast residents. Day four sees the train travel to Hokitika, and day five back to Ashburton, then Dunedin. The tour is full at 90 passengers, but the WestportGreymouth trip is open to West Coast passengers.

OPEN THE DOOR TO A CAREER IN RETAIL! The Warehouse Redshirts in Schools Gateway Programme

R

etail is an exciting career choice with loads of possibilities – from helping customers, product displays, marketing, running a store, to management at head office. The Warehouse RedShirts in Schools is part of a nationwide initiative that gives students a chance to get valuable work experience in retail and help make the move from school into a career. The Greymouth Warehouse is in it’s second year of providing this programme and on to the fourth group of students. Each group consists of six students who each work towards gaining experience in a Retail environment. On successful completion they gain 28 Credits towards the National Certificate in Retail (Level 2). Jade Hume and Latarylia Richardson

have been with the programme for the last six weeks. They both have their sights set on becoming hairdressers. Many of the skills they are gaining through the RedShirt programme will assist them on this path. Their favourite part of the job is working in a team environment. “It’s like one big massive family”, explains Jade. There are a team of 75 people who work at the Greymouth Warehouse and this extends to around 100 in the busy Christmas period. The skills and experience they gain are stepping stones into any chosen profession. Communication, Customer Service, Personal Presentation, Health and Safety, Team

Far left: Jade Hume. Back: Latarliya Richardson (Redshirt students). Front from left: Jessie Morris. June Griggs.

Work are many of the fundamental skills they will obtain from completing the programme. All of which are skills that are not only required for work but also life. Jessie Morrison and June Griggs provide a tremendous support network for the students. June is the co-ordinator and assessor helping students complete each unit of their bookwork. “There’s a lot of work involved and the

success rate is fantastic. Everyone who has completed the course has passed”, says June. Jessie helps the students on the shop floor and finds the entire process extremely gratifying. “It’s great when you see them outside of work and they still remember you. Seeing them progress and get a job is extremely rewarding”.

SHOWING RESTRAINT Do YOU make it click every time?

You and yours — Every time.

West Coast Road Safety Co-ordinator

If not, what will you say when the Police stop you? “Forgot,” “I was just going round the corner” – these are unlikely to cut any ice and remember crashes still happen close to home. Too many who were unrestrained are now dead or seriously damaged for life. Recent Coast surveys show compliance at around 93% but shouldn’t that be closer to one hundred percent? Make it click to avoid a “face plant” on the dash, front windscreen, or getting thrown out. The force on safety belts can be as much as 20 times your weight – this is how hard you’d hit the inside of your vehicle without restraint. The law states: • If you sit in a seat with a safety belt you must wear it. • Children aged under seven must be secured in an approved child restraint travelling in cars or vans. • Children aged seven must use a child restraint if available. If not, they must use a safety belt. Until their 7th Birthday. Correctly secure your child in an approved child restraint from their 7th to their 8th birthday Correctly secure your child in an approved child restraint if available in the vehicle (if not, in any child restraint or safety belt that is available).

• ADVERTORIAL

From 8th birthday to 14 years old. A child must use safety belts if available. If not available, they must travel in the back seat. Over 14 years must use safety belts where available. “It’s better to wait until they’re 148cm” International best practice recommends an appropriate child restraint (or booster seat) until your child reaches 148cm tall or is 12 years old. The seatbelt should fit across their shoulder NOT neck and carry a NZ, European or Australian safety sticker. Your child’s seat should be a good quality model with side protecting wings, not an ‘el cheapo’ thing that will do diddly squat for your little one in a crash. Half booster seats are designed to be used for children who have outgrown full backed booster seats. These types of seats are not suitable for preschool children. Children under 13 years old should always ride in the back seat as airbags are designed for adults If buying a used restraint be certain it is not past its expiry date or been in a crash. For babies, medical professionals recommend that you keep them in a rear-facing restraint until they are a minimum of 2 years of age, in the back seat, on the left side. Plunket can advise you on models and safety standards for your baby or child.

Ghostbusters (PG) Hokitika Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today - Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. They’re here to save the world! Ice Age Collision Course (G) Greymouth • Hokitika Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapults him outside of Earth, where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the planet. To save themselves from peril, Manny, Sid, Diego, and the rest of the herd leave their home and embark on a quest full of thrills and spills, highs and lows, laughter and adventure while travelling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colourful new characters. The BFG (PG) Greymouth • Hokitika Ten-year-old Sophie is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant. Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realises

REGENT GREYMOUTH • PHONE 03 768 0920 www.regentgreymouth.co.nz

that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and other giants. After travelling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all. Finding Dory (PG ) Greymouth • Hokitika The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way. Independence Day Resurgence (M) Greymouth • Hokitika We always knew they were coming back. After ‘Independence Day’ redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence programme to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
