AbOuT “SOuTH PACiFiC” James michener, a lieutenant, was stationed at Espiritu Santo in the South Pacific during World War II. When he returned, he published Tales of the South Pacific, based on his wartime experiences and observations. The novel won michener the 1948 Pulitzer Prize.

Tales of the South Pacific was made up of eighteen stories. Director Joshua Logan decided to try to buy the rights to adapt one of the stories for the stage. That story of the doomed romance between an American officer and a young Tonkinese woman, eventually inspired the story of Lieutenant Joe Cable and Liat in South Pacific. But first, Logan needed to find someone to write a play based on the story — his interest was only in directing it. Logan mentioned his idea to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. When they read Tales of the South Pacific, they decided to buy the rights to all eighteen stories. They believed that they could write a musical based on michener’s work that would be financially successful and, at the same time, would send a strong progressive message on racism.

When Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated, Hammerstein almost always wrote the words first, and then Rodgers set them to music. Hammerstein found himself stuck when he started to write the book for Tales from the South Pacific. He just couldn’t write the military characters. He had never been to war, and he didn’t know how the characters would talk or behave.

Joshua Logan had served in the U.S. Army during the war, so Hammerstein asked him to help make sure he got the military details right. Logan and Hammerstein ended up writing the entire script as a joint effort.

It is said that Hammerstein shared the words to “Bali Ha’i” over a working lunch, and Richard Rodgers immediately sketched out the tune right there at the table. Other songs were not so easy. “Younger Than Springtime,” the love song that Lieutenant Cable sings to Liat, was only written after Joshua Logan had insisted that the first two attempts at songs for that spot were not good enough.

South Pacific opened on Broadway on April 7, 1949. The production featured mary martin as Ensign Nellie Forbush, opera star Enzio Pinza as Emile de Becque and Juanita Hall as Bloody mary. The reviews were raves. The show was a smash hit and it ran for 1,925 performances, finally closing in 1954. It won 9 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. The 2008 Broadway revival was a critical success, ran for 996 performances and won seven Tonys, including Best musical Revival.

It was adapted into a 1958 movie. mary martin did not play Nellie Forbush in the movie because Enzio Pinza had already died and the producers considered it to be a hopeless task to find anybody who could match her in the movie. mitzi Gaynor was eventually cast in the role. Rosano Brazzi was cast as Emile, a role that was first offered to such established stars as Charles Boyer, vittorio DeSica and Fernando Lamas. This would be the first Rodgers and Hammerstein film of a stage show to contain every song from the stage. Rodgers and Hammerstein were pressured to delete the song “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught,” but the team would not budge. The song was a bold composition about prejudice, but Rodgers and Hammerstein had no problem bringing social issues into their musicals. The film was considered a big success and became the top money-maker of 1958.

WHO’S WHO Charles Repole (Director) has directed numerous productions for Westchester Broadway Theatre including: Sugar, The Sound of Music, Gypsy and My Fair Lady. His New York City and Broadway directing credits include the highly acclaimed concert versions of Dubarry was a Lady starring Faith Prince and Robert Morse and Call Me Madam starring Tyne Daly for the prestigious City Center Encores! series, the revival of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Lauri Strauss Leukemia Foundation Benefit at Carnegie Hall starring Regis Philbin, Marvin Hamlisch, Judy Collins, Anne Reinking and the New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson, and for 10 years, Mr. Repole had conceived and directed the annual fund raising gala for the 92nd Street “Y” including, Lyrics and Lyricists 25th Year Celebration hosted by Angela Lansbury and starring: Joel Grey, Rosie O’Donnell, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Herman, Cy Coleman, Stephen Schwartz and Sheldon Harnick. For the Kennedy Center’s concert series, Words and Music, Mr. Repole directed Where’s Charley? and staged a concert version of Of Thee I Sing for the Chicago Humanities Festival celebrating the 100th Birthday of George Gershwin. Also an accomplished on-stage performer, he has appeared before Broadway audiences starring in Doubles, Whoopee! (for which he earned a Drama Desk nomination) and Very Good Eddie (which earned him a Tony® nomination and a Theatre World Award). Off-Broadway credits include Olympus On My Mind and the concert version of Magdalena. Mr. Repole is the Chairman of the Department of Drama Theatre and Dance at Queen’s College.

LEO P. CARUSONE (Musical Director) recent credits include Mary Poppins, Fiddler On The Roof, Kiss Me Kate, Singing In The Rain, Jekyll and Hyde and Hairspray, and many other shows at the Westchester Broadway Theatre. Other credits include Rent and Spring Awakening, Chicago,

Charlie Brown and Edges. He musical directed the Andrew Lloyd Webber show By Jeeves at the Meadowbrook Theater in Michigan. He also conducted The Producers and Phantom of the Opera by Yeston/Kopit. Mr. Carusone musical directed the York Theater productions of Little Me working with Cy Coleman as well as the New York and Boston Companies of Nunsense. He was Musical Director for the 20th all-star anniversary tour of Nunsense and was also musical director for the video of Nuncrackers – A Christmas Nunsense starring Rue Mc Clanahan and Nunsense Amen in New York City. National tours include Cats, Annie starring JoAnne Worley/Marcia Lewis and John Schuck, Nunsense with Georgia Engel, The Music Man and The Sound of Music with Burke Moses and Marla Schaffel. My Fair Lady with Jamie Farr, Chess and Nunsense Jamboree starring Vicki Lawrence. He also musical directed the TNN Television performance of Nunsense Jamboree with Ms. Lawrence. Mr. Carusone was conductor for Starlight Musicals in Indianapolis for 5 years, leading orchestras for Kiss Me, Kate starring Judy Kaye, John Raitt in Carousel and Shenandoah and Lucie Arnaz and Lawrence Luckinbill in I Do, I Do, to name a few. He created all the vocal and musical arrangements for the new Nunset Boulevard, Nunsensations, Meshuggah-Nuns, and Nuncrackers – A Christmas Nunsense, all are currently out on CD. Mr. Carusone is currently a professor in the musical theater department at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Connecticut.

Michael Lichtefeld (Choreograher) has choreographed 6 Broadway shows, 8 off-Broadway and 11 national and international tours.

He choreographed nine seasons at the Stratford Festival and also directed two shows, South Pacific and My One And Only for Stratford. He choreographed at the Shaw Festival and directed eight productions for the Drayton Festival, Canada. He has been nominated for the Drama Desk, the LA Ovation, three Outer Critics

STEVEN LOFTUS (Set Designer) has been one of our resident designers since Kiss Me, Kate in 2002. Some of his favorites at WBT include Gypsy, Phantom, Aida, Miss Saigon and In the Heights.

As a set designer, Steve has provided scenery for many regional theaters, colleges and high schools around the Tri-state area. As well as a few tours and special events at Lincoln Center.

Steve is also the proud owner of Scene Works Inc., a fully serviced scene shop providing all aspects of scenic design and fabrication. He is most recently the proud father of Elias and Aubrey.

DEREK LOCKWOOD (Costume Designer) was born in Santa Barbara, and grew up in Ojai, CA. He earned his Bachelors Degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Costume Design from California Institute of the Arts. Derek is pleased to once again return to WBT as Costumer Designer, having recently completed Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Titanic, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls and Oliver! He has been an assistant designer for numerous WBT productions in the past.

Derek recently completed Assistant Design and Wardrobe for My Fair Lady in Singapore. Other design credits include Night Mother starring Joy Franz at White Horse Theatre Company, 50 Million Frenchmen by Cole Porter at Medicine Show Theatre, Saharava a ritualized dance opera at Fringe Festival, and creating “one of kind” designs for private clients.

Roberto SILVA (Costume Designer) was formally trained as a fashion designer and has collaborated with major fashion brands as a visual merchandiser. Since November 2013, Roberto has assisted Designer Derek Lockwood with the alteration and construction of costumes for various productions at the Westchester Broadway Theatre including Titanic, Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz, and Swing at The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton, FL. Roberto has also helped with the design and production of costumes for major production companies and one of a kind garments for private clients. He is very excited about his first collaboration with Derek as a co-designer for South Pacific. Forever grateful to Lisa Tiso for this opportunity, and to my mentor and friend, Derek Lockwood.

ANDREW GMOSER (Lighting Design) has lit all of our mainstage productions since 1990. Over the years he has created the sets and/or lighting for a multitude of productions throughout Westchester and beyond, and is a proud recipient of the Cab Calloway Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Performing Arts in Westchester. Andrew loves his job designing lighting for all levels of theatre, from high school programs through professional Broadway-caliber productions. For over thirty years he was set and lighting designer (and from time to time, director) for Asbury Summer Theatre, and is preparing for his 21st season with the MacHaydn Theatre in upstate New York.

Through his company, Silent G Productions, Andrew provides theatrical lighting design, equipment, and consultation for live theatre, dance, and concerts. Andrew’s best and most important

VON ANN STUTLER (Musical Contractor) Since the inception of the theatre 40 years ago, Von Ann has been responsible for putting together the excellent musicians which make up our orchestra. Each show has unique instrumentation requirements. Von Ann, in consultation with the musical director, determines the makeup and particular talented personnel to fulfill the show’s requirements. Von Ann is a musician having training in clarinet, piano and harp. She was a voice major at Michigan State University.

She has raised 5 children and is the proud grandmother of 7 (four girls and 3 boys).

LISA TISO (Producer) is happy to be a part of the WBT family which she joined in 1979 as a buffet girl. Lisa has worked in nearly every department in our organization and, since 1991, as Associate Producer and as Producer on over 25 mainstage productions. Lisa and her 20 year old daughter, Carmen live in Ardsley with Maximus, their very own Toto.

BOB FUNKING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners / Executive Producers) On July 9, 2014, the Westchester Broadway Theatre proudly celebrated its 40th Anniversary, as well as the 24th Anniversary in this specifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best 19

WHO’S WHO in musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. South Pacific is our 186th mainstage Production.) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte. With the continued support of the people of the tri-state area, we pledge to continue to present the best in theatre and dining.
