ABOUT “AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’” Conceived by Richard Maltby Jr. and Murray Horwitz, the musical revue Ain’t Misbehavin’ premiered in 1978 on Broadway as a tribute to the Harlem Renaissance, when black musicians played at Manhattan clubs frequented by members of high society. Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and that jumpin’ new beat, swing music. He was a legendary composer, singer and comedian, picking up the nickname “Fats” because of his girth, Waller was famous for his Harlem stride piano style — alternating bass notes with the left hand and melody with the right — which laid the groundwork for jazz piano. Waller made is first recording in 1922 and was a prolific songwriter, composing many familiar songs such as “Honeysuckle Rose” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” both with his most frequent lyricist Andy Razaf. By 1926, he was so popular that while at an engagement in Chicago he was kidnapped to appear at Al Capone’s birthday party. He wrote for the early all-black Broadway shows Keep Shufflin’ (1926), Load of Coal (1928), and Hot Chocolates (1929). Waller headlined several radio shows, most notably “Rhythm Club,” which featured Fats Waller and his Rhythm Sextet. Later he composed Early to Bed (1943), the first non-black Broadway show composed by an African American. Over the course of his lifetime, Waller published more than 400 original songs. One day in the Dayton, Ohio Public Library, a teenaged boy by the name of Murray Horwitz, checked out Fats Waller’s album Valentine Stomp. He realized Waller was the greatest jazz pianist who ever tried to make people laugh, and the greatest comedian who ever played jazz.

He partnered with lyricist and director Richard Maltby Jr., and helped to create Ain’t Misbehavin’. The show combines songs that Fats Waller composed, collaborated on, or recorded in his signature style. The reason for the success of the show, Murray Horwitz insists, “was overwhelmingly the excellence and universal appeal of Fats Waller.” “It was a process of putting Fats Waller’s music, his wit and his gargantuan personality on the stage -- it was a kind of play-writing all the way through, using those five characters to represent Waller.” Said Richard Matlby Jr. “It’s all about dealing with an unfair world. This is a world in which black artists had to use the back stairs rather than the lobby. They never complain about it, they deal with it with language.” The original Broadway production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ opened on May 9, 1978 and ran for 1604 performances. It won that year’s Tony Award, Outer Critics’ Circle Award and Drama Desk Award, all for Best Musical. Nell Carter, Ken Page, Andre DeShields, Charlaine Woodard, and Armelia McQueen starred in the original production. Richard Maltby Jr. was the director, Arthur Faria, an expert on 1930s dance, choreographed the show and Luther Henderson, who adapted Waller’s music for the revue, was the production’s original pianist. Today, Ain’t Misbehavin’ retains its popularity as an energetic, musically rich show. Over sixty years after Fats Waller’s last performance, new audiences are meeting and falling in love with him again. “Fats gives us a way to make sense of modern life. What is even more astonishing is that he makes us smile – and often laugh – as he does it,” said Murray Horowitz. – PIA HAAS

WHO’S WHO M. MARTINE ALLARD (Nell) is a native of New York, of Haitian decent, attended the NYC Public Schools, The Boston Conservatory & The University of LV Nevada where she majored in Opera Theatre & Jazz Production. She 1st appeared on Broadway at age 13 in the musical The Tap Dance Kid which she received a 1984 Theatre World Award, was nominated for a 1984 Tony Award, 1986 Helen Hayes Award & the NAACP Image Award for Best Supporting Actress in a musical. Since then Martine has appeared in many more theater productions, cabarets, Operas, t.v. mini series & sitcoms such as Diff’Rent Strokes, several recordings including the cast album of The Tap Dance Kid & her solo jazz CD, IT IS WHAT IT IS. As an accredited vocal instructor, a proud member of Sigma Alpha Iota Women’s Music Fraternity & the Nat’l Assoc. for Negro Musicians, she attributes her successes to the support of her family, the Light & Sound of God & service to LIFE THROUGH MUSIC.

RON LUCAS (Andre) performed the role of John in Miss Saigon in Stuttgart, Germany, has been seen across the country in countless productions of Jesus Christ Superstar as Judas. He also starred in the world premiere production of Bingo Long, a musical version of the movie about the Negro baseball leagues. His other credits include regional productions of Smokey Joe’s Café, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Five Guys Named Moe, The Elegance of Ellington, Hair, Godspell, Sophisticated Ladies, as Billy Eckstein in Mr. B. Changed The Key and his one-man show The Nat King Cole Songbook. Television work includes Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, 30 Rock, Oz and Spin City. Ron also writes songs and jingles and does Voice Over work for radio and television ads.

WILLIAM FOSTER MCDANIEL (Musical Director, Conductor, Pianist) First appearance at the Westchester Broadway Theatre was as Musical Director of Ain’t Misbehavin’ shortly after the show opened on Broadway. Among shows he has subsequently conducted at the WBT are Fiddler On The Roof, Dream Girls, Damn Yankees and Crazy For You. Mr. McDaniel has musical directed over fifty productions of Ain’t Misbehavin’ throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. He conducted productions featuring the original cast on Broadway, in Los 8

Angeles and the 1988 Broadway revival. He was Musical Director for the Pointer Sisters National Tour, the Martha Reeves National Tour and the 2009 production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. He was Musical Supervisor of the 30 Year Anniversary Tour. Mr. McDaniel has supervised, conducted and played on two cast recordings of Ain’t Misbehavin’, the latter nominated for a Grammy Award. A. CURTIS FARROW (Associate Director) is a veritable powder keg of energy and talent whose directing credits span the US and abroad. He has been involved with over 100 productions of Ain’t Misbehavin’. He is internationally know as the producer of the McDonald’s Gospelfest, which he has directed and produced for 20 years. Under his direction McDonald’s Gospelfest has become the preeminent gospel event in the nation and has garnered him two Emmy awards and ten nominations. Mr. Farrow was responsible for the organization, planning and execution of the home going services for the Late Whitney Houston and most recently he produced the homegoing services for the Late Aretha Franklin which was viewed around the world. As a choir empresario, in 2014 Mr. Farrow broke the Guinness World Record for Largest Gospel Choir at 1175 voices, which he followed with a 2000 Voice Choir at Madison Square Garden in 2017 and a 5000 Voice Choir at the Nassau Coliseum in 2018. His directing and producing credits include national tours of; Ain’t Misbehavin’, Smokey Joe’s Café, Sophisticated Ladies, Five Guys Named Moe, Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, Godspell and Forever Plaid. Mr. Farrow credits everything in his life to his strong belief in God. STEVE LOFTUS (Set Coordinator / Technical Director) has been one of our resident designers since Kiss Me, Kate in 2002. Some of his favorites at WBT include Gypsy, Phantom, Aida, Miss Saigon and In the Heights. As a set designer, Steve has provided scenery for many regional theaters, colleges and high schools around the Tri-state area. As well as a few tours and special events at Lincoln Center. Steve is also the owner of Scene Works Inc., a fully serviced scene shop providing all aspects of scenic design and fabrication based out of Ossining, NY. He is most proud to be a father to Elias and Aubrey.

WHO’S WHO Keith Nielsen (Costume Designer) is excited to be back at the WBT designing his fourth show this season, credits preceding Ain’t Misbehavin’ include Phantom, A Chorus Line & Anything Goes. Keith has assisted on several WBT productions (Man of La Mancha, Happy Days) including the 200th production; Mamma Mia. Keith’s credits extend beyond the stage and onto the screen, film and television credits include the Golden Globe and Emmy winning series Mozart in the Jungle, Quantico (S3), Spider-Man: Homecoming & First Reformed. Within the film sector he has designed several short films as well as the Funny or Die series, “The Real Stephen Blatt” starring actor Justin Long, now streaming on Funny or Die and Amazon Prime. Andrew loves his job designing lighting for all levels of theatre, from high school programs through professional Broadwaycaliber productions. For over thirty years he was set and lighting designer (and from time to time, director) for Asbury Summer Theatre, and is beginning his 25th season with the MacHaydn Theatre in upstate New York. Through his company, Silent G Productions, Andrew provides theatrical lighting design, equipment, and consultation for live theatre, dance, and concerts. Andrew’s best and most important production is with his lovely wife, Catherine: their nineteen year old twins, Thomas and Elizabeth! WHO’S WHO VON ANN STUTLER (Musical Contractor) Since the inception of the theatre 44 years ago, Von Ann has been responsible for putting together the excellent musicians which make up our orchestra. Each show has unique instrumentation requirements. Von Ann, in consultation with the musical director, determines the makeup and particular talented personnel to fulfill the show’s requirements. Von Ann is a musician having training in clarinet, piano and harp. She was a voice major at Michigan State University. She has raised 5 children and is the proud grandmother of 7 (four girls and 3 boys). LISA TISO (Producer) has been with WBT since 1979 when she began as a buffet girl. Having worked in nearly every department, and since 1991 has worked on our shows as Associate Producer or Producer. An avid Yankee fan, Lisa lives in Ardsley with her daughter Carmen and their dogs Stevie and Dino. BOB FUNKING AND BILL STUTLER (Owners/Executive Producers) On July 9, 2018, the Westchester Broadway Theatre celebrated its 44th Anniversary, as well as the 29th Anniversary in this specifically designed, state of the art theatre. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. ABOUT “MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL” Written by Jeanie Linders, Menopause The Musical debuted March 28, 2001 in Orlando, Florida. The Off-Broadway production officially opened at Theatre Four on April 4, 2002, logging more than 1500 performances. A Las Vegas production has been running since 2006. It is the Longest running scripted musical in Las Vegas history. International productions have been seen in 11 countries and counting. “Menopause The Musical came out of my standing in front of the freezer singing the words “Hot Flash” to Rod Stewart’s “Hot Legs.” Said Linders, “I was dressed for a formal evening … the local NAACP was honoring Jesse Stone, and I was ready to walk out the door and the dripping started. Then in the summer of 1998 I went to San Francisco and saw Beach Blanket Babylon, another parody show in its 30+ year by now. Everyone was screaming with laughter around me and I was kind of angry. I had this voice in my head that kept saying, “Well you could do this…” So, I went back home … and did it.” “It is said that a writer writes what he/she knows. And I realized… that I am my characters … all of them. The Professional Woman who bought into Gloria Steinem’s “you can be it all” routine in the early ‘80s; the aging Soap Star, the diva personality who cringes at the sight of the wrinkles in the mirror, but still walks into the room with a “look at me” attitude; the lost in the ‘60s Earth Mother, who has ALWAYS worn long skirts … and Birkenstocks and feels very much at home at a Left Coast poetry reading; and, of course, the nurturing Iowa housewife. I was raised to get married and have four kids. I just forgot along the way and there is a part of me that knows something is missing … And the irony is that the women in the audience identify in the same 10 way. They too have the personality traits of 12

all of the characters … and can relate to what each is experiencing.” Due to the huge success of Menopause The Musical, she founded the Jeanie C. Linders Fund to empower women all over the world. The Fund has produced and presented the Menopause The Musical Out Loud Tour twice – each tour visiting over 50 cities. A portion of the proceeds from each tour was designated for local and regional ovarian cancer chapter. The Fund supports women worldwide in areas of business development, arts and culture, personal growth, health issues and education. The Foundation has encouraged and assisted women to start small businesses using the skills they know best to raise their families out of poverty. Through the JCLF program, There’s No Place Like Home National, homes are built for women and their families who have lost theirs due to natural disasters. “The show is about WOMEN … not about theatre” Said Linders. “And there are more than 38 million baby boomer women in America alone who understand the embarrassment of “Gotta go, Gotta go,” and laugh at ourselves; we understand the feeling of wanting to shake the doctor by his/her lapels and scream, “YOU HAVE TO HELP ME. I CAN’T SLEEP ANYMORE!”; we understand the feeling of thinking we are alone with the memory loss and wrinkles and everything else that comes with aging and love being able to share the feeling with hundreds of women in the audience. The musical started out as an experience. who’s who Megan Cavanagh (Earth Mother) is most recognized as Marla Hooch, from the movie, “A League of Their Own”. Other film credits include: Mel Brooks’ “Robin Hood: Men In Tights” (Broomhilde) and (Essie) “Dracula: Dead and Loving It.” She starred with Tim Allen in “For Richer or Poorer” (Levinia Yoder). Megan voiced Judy Neutron in the Academy Award nominated animated feature “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and in the Nickelodeon TV series. Other TV credits include: recurring character Trudy (who married Al) on “Home Improvement.” She was a series regular (Chris) on “Bob” with Bob Newhart and Betty White. She guest starred on “Friends,” “Will & Grace,” “Just Shoot Me,” “ER,” “Roseanne” and many others. She has performed in Menopause The Musical® since 2004.
