ABOUT “PHANTOM” Like most novels dubbed classics by virtue of their literary excellence and enduring popularity, Gaston Leroux’s “The Phantom of the Opera” was bound to enjoy a life beyond the confines of its 1911 book-cover. Set in the world’s most romantic city, in the famed Paris Opera House, the haunting tale is replete with mystery, romance, and conflict galore. By 1925 the thriving silent film industry had fashioned Leroux’s story into a vehicle for fright master Lon Chaney. Next, came Claude Rains’ more sedate 1943 cinematic impersonation, followed two decades later by a British screen version, and more recently Brian De Palma’s rock-toned modernization, “The Phantom of the Paradise.” It also received a television adaptation in 1983 with Maximillian Schell. The transition to the musical stage was inevitable. The Tony Award-winning-team of Arthur Kopit and Maury Yeston (Nine) had created a brand new adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s classical novel. This Kopit/Yeston Phantom should not be confused with the Andrew Lloyd Webber version, Phantom of The Opera running on Broadway. The differences range from the music to more developed character izations, to different special effects. Kopit and Yeston have said they began working on their Phantom in 1983 and didn’t even learn of the Lloyd Webber competition until 1985. They were close to getting their financing when it was announced that Webber’s was being staged in London. It then became impossible for them to raise money to mount another big musical on the same subject, and so, the musical was shelved. Kopit proceeded to turn his Phantom into an NBC Mini-Series that starred Burt Lancaster, and Yeston went off to do Grand Hotel. It took Frank Young, the President of the Alliance for Musical Theatre Producers, to bring the Yeston/ Kopit Phantom back from oblivion. His Houston
theatre, Theatre Under the Stars, is contin ually looking for new musicals. So, having heard about the Yeston/Kopit Phantom, he made contact and in January of 1991 the show was produced to critical acclaim, and was an immediate outstanding commercial success. The production was then moved to the Fifth Avenue Musical Theatre in Seattle, Washington with the same results. Subsequently, Bill Pullinsi (Producer/Director of the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse in Chicago) produced the show in January of 1992 with spectacular direction and special effects, breaking all attendance records. Our original production at WBT opened on July 16th of 1992 and ran till April 11th of 1993. This NY premiere’s nine-month run brought 120,000 people to our theatre, making it the longest running show in our history. It has since been produced across the country and around the world. Yeston refers to Phantom as “the greatest hit never to be produced on Broadway.” When Maury Yeston was approached with the idea for this musical, initially, he did not have much interest in such a project. “I laughed and laughed. ‘What are you thinking? That’s the worst idea in the world! Why would you want to write a musical based on a horror story? I mean, what are you going to do next, The Werewolf? The Invisible Man, The Musical?’.... And then it occurred to me that the story could be somewhat changed ... The Phantom would be a Quasimodo character, an Elephant Man. Don’t all of us feel, despite outward imperfections, that deep inside we’re good? And that is a character you cry for.” Phantom triumphantly returned to our stage in 1996 and again in 2007. Tom Polum, who was in the ensemble for that first production in 1992, and directed and choreographed the subsequent productions, is happy to be at the helm once again! – PIA HAAS

Tom Polum (Director) was co-lead producer of the multi award winning The Toxic Avenger OffBroadway. As a Director at WBT he has directed Oklahoma, Funny Girl, Carousel, Grease, Hello Dolly, Phantom (three times now!) and was in the original production in ’92. He also served as associate for musical staging and helped restage the Broadway Production of Cyrano The Musical, at the Carre Theatre in Amsterdam. Tom serves as Chairman of the Board of Theatre Resources Unlimited, a non-profit dedicated to helping new producers and artists. BOB BRAY (Musical Director) first show at WBT was playing keyboards for Phantom way back in 1992. Since then he was the Musical Director/ Conductor for Mamma Mia at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas as well as playing and conducting Mamma Mia on Broadway throughout its 14 year run. He conducted the 1st National Tour of Show Boat directed by Hal Prince and starring Len Cariou and Cloris Leachman and was the Assistant Conductor for Damn Yankees starring Jerry Lewis. More recently he conducted the International Tour of Dreamgirls and the Montreal premiere of Beauty and the Beast. On Broadway he played in the orchestras for Aspects of Love, Beauty and the Beast, My WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE

ERICA MANSFIELD (Associate Choreographer) Westchester is no stranger to Erica. She started her career here with the same team in Funny Girl, Oklahoma, Grease and Hello Dolly. Earlier this year you would have seen her as Cassie in A Chorus Line. Erica just finished playing Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia over the summer at Theatre by the Sea and North Shore Music Theatre. Broadway credits include Bandstand (us June Adams), Finding Neverland (us Mary Barrie), On the Town (us Claire De Loone), On the Twentieth Century, Evita, How to Succeed… (us Miss Jones) and Pippin (us Fastrada). National Tours: Mamma Mia, A Chorus Line. Recent regional The Sting (World Premier). She has appeared in The Tony Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, Jimmy Fallon and is currently a lifestyle contributor for NBC Boston’s The Hub Today. STEVE LOFTUS (Set Coordinator / Technical Director) has been one of our resident designers since Kiss Me, Kate in 2002. Some of his favorites at WBT include Gypsy, Phantom, Aida, Miss Saigon and In the Heights. As a set designer, Steve has provided scenery for many regional theaters, colleges and high schools around the Tri-state area. As well as a few tours and special events at Lincoln Center. Steve is also the owner of Scene Works Inc., a fully serviced scene shop providing all aspects of scenic design and fabrication based out of Ossining, NY. He is most proud to be a father to Elias and Aubrey. Carl Tallent (Set Coordinator / Scenic Artist) is excited to return to Westchester Broadway after a decade long absence. Carl is a freelance scenic designer and painter based out of NYC. Recent credits include ‘68: A New American Musical at NYMF, HAIR at Pentangle Arts in Woodstock VT, Sweet Charity with Broadway Workshop, Charlie Brown with Inside Broadway, WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE
and Godspell, Patsy Cline, and Marvelous Wonderettes at Artistree in Woodstock, VT. Carl also works extensively as a window dresser at Bergdorf Goodman, a props artisan on Broadway productions, and is a teaching artist with Roundabout Theatre Company. Keith Nielsen (Costume Designer) is excited to be back at the WBT designing his third show this season, credits preceding Phantom include A Chorus Line & Anything Goes. Keith has assisted on several WBT productions (Man of La Mancha, Happy Days) including the 200th production; Mamma Mia. Keith’s credits extend beyond the stage and onto the screen, film and television credits include the Golden Globe and Emmy winning series Mozart in the Jungle, Quantico (S3), Spider-Man: Homecoming & First Reformed. Within the film sector he has designed several short films as well as the Funny or Die series, “The Real Stephen Blatt” starring actor Justin Long, now streaming on Funny or Die and Amazon Prime. Each show has unique instrumentation requirements. Von Ann, in consultation with the musical director, determines the makeup and particular talented personnel to fulfill the show’s requirements. Von Ann is a musician having training in clarinet, piano and harp. She was a voice major at Michigan State University. She has raised 5 children and is the proud grandmother of 7 (four girls and 3 boys). LISA TISO (Producer) has been with WBT since 1979 when she began as a buffet girl. Having worked in nearly every department, and since 1991 has worked on our shows as Associate Producer or Producer. Bill and Bob, 2004 inductees into the “Westchester County Business Hall of Fame,” pioneered the Dinner Theatre concept in Westchester when they opened An Evening Dinner Theatre on July 9, 1974. Having designed and built An Evening from the ground up as a theatre that serves dinner and lunch, they established their operation as a cultural mainstay in the tri-state area. The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the only year round theatre in Westchester where Broadway performers, directors and designers gather to create the best in Musical Theatre. (They have produced more shows than most Broadway producers. Phantom, we are proud to say, is their 207th Production!) The Westchester Broadway Theatre is the longest running, 52 week a year Equity theatre in the State of New York. Each show is produced exclusively for the theatre and each is approached in the same manner as Broadway Productions: casting Broadway performers at auditions in New York City, and hiring the creative staff (Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Set, Costume and Lighting Designers). On the dark nights of the musicals, Bill and Bob have presented over 900 Monday and Tuesday night specials and, in 1997, inaugurated the Gold Star Series of Concerts presenting Jackie Mason to a sold-out house. Other great performers in the Gold Star series have been Tom Jones, George Carlin, Paul Anka, Wayne Newton, and Harry Belafonte.
