2022 Concert Program

As we continue to learn about the living histories of this place, it’s also important to recognize the ongoing violence of colonization in Canada that can be traced to forced assimilation practices like the 1923 Williams Treaty, the Indian Act, and residential schools that operated from 1894 to 1997, and many others. Our music-making at Westben is therefore in grateful recognition and appreciation of our Michi Saagiig friends whose music has filled these lands for generations.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Westben is nestled amongst the gently rolling hills of the Gunshot Treaty lands and subsequent Williams Treaties of 1923, and the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig (Mississauga) Anishinaabeg near what is now known as Campbellford, Ontario. This area today includes neighbouring Alderville, Hiawatha, and Curve Lake First Nations—thriving communities with cultural roots of musicmaking spanning thousands of years! If you would like to learn more about the Indigenous history where Westben resides, we recommend clicking on the links of these nations above and reading: Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg: The History by Doug Williams and edited by Leanne Betasamoke Simpson, Alderville First Nation... A History by Brian Beaver and the Village of Hiawatha: A History by Heather Y. Shpuniarsky and the Village of Hiawatha Book Committee.

WESTBEN.CA l 1.877.833.5777 ii We're back!

The Barn, with its fresh, comfy new seats, has been reconfigured to allow for endless set up opportunities. The Willow Hill amphitheater with its newly shaped audience hill, is ready and waiting in the sunshine. And The Campfire is stoked and ready to cast its warm glow on an array of wonderfully intimate performances.

But that’s not to say that things aren’t different – they certainly are! Looking on the bright side (as is our habit!), there are so many new and wonderful things to enjoy here at Westben – to come back is to experience it all over again for the first time!

Across the street in the Mary West Nature Reserve, the bobolinks are singing, and the brook is giggling. The bell is happily ringing up at our new administrative home & Box Office at the West Schoolhouse. Music is everywhere, casting a ring of happiness throughout this beautiful corner of the world. Sometimes, such beauty can take your breath away – or it can make you cry. In my opinion, it is truly the best reason to do both! Meanwhile, maybe you have visited us online? Maybe you stopped by the Digital Venue (where you can throw some musical rocks in the pond while you’re there!), or perhaps you are enjoying the wonderful Digital Concerts at The Barn, all of which were produced over the past two years with the masterful help of videographer Steve Dagg and Westben’s Audio Tech, Andy Thompson. And there’s more ahead! This year, we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the international Performer- Composer Residency which includes over 40 participants from around the world. And as for the live events, get ready for a return to summer events as well as the Open Air Fall Fest. Westben is the happy sum of all its live and digital parts: the wonderful music, the incredible venues and setting, and above all, the amazing people, both local and visiting. It all comes together to become “Westben”. And if these past couple of years have taught us anything, it’s that the world needs “Westben”, if only to remember what life can be... So it’s true: we’re back. Although actually, we never really went away! Even so, I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to have you back (or here for the first time)! Welcome, with renewed gusto!

What was once an arts organization with a summer festival in the Barn as its showpiece, Westben is now a hotbed of traditional concerts at the Barn, open air shows in the natural outdoor amphitheatre at Willow Hill, intimate campfire performances on warm nights as the sun lowers, digitally delivered concerts bringing excellent music and videography straight to your home.

M. Kathleen Kinch Barrister & Solicitor Chair of The Westben Board of Directors

WESTBEN.CA l 1.877.833.5777iii

It is a privilege to be on the Board of an organization that not only has a vision for growth and change, but the energy and fuel to make big plans happen when the right moment arrives. The dedicated staff, led by co-founders Brian and Donna, have made new venues and performance spaces blossom all over Westben’s expanded grounds. They have also introduced audiences to the Westben spirit in sonic forest adventures through the adjacent Nature Conservancy of Canada site (the Mary West property) and a more immersive experience on the grounds; we have long been accompanied by the soft melodies of nature here, but this year the breeze, the wildlife and the play of light across the land are stars of the show along with the artists. In 2022, the innovation of the pandemic years is about to fuse with Westben’s seasoned staging of creative powerhouses. Each event in 2022 is a singular experience of sensory ingredients, full of opportunities for unforgettable performances, composition, learning and inspiration on sister stages throughout the Westben spaces. We extend our very warmest welcome to everyone who joins us here this year, ready to see these carefully nurtured sparks come aflame.

It is also the core of a cutting edge international performer-composer residency, the home of bobolinks and indigenous plant life and invigorating sustainability projects, a welcoming place (complete with new artist cabins) for a wide array of diverse performers united by their excellence and talents, and a new home for the organization’s staff and community within the sun-warmed bricks of a heritage schoolhouse.

Westben has always had lots of irons in the fire.... ...but this year it is a true pleasure for all of us on the Board of Directors to see just how many fires have been ignited in 2022 (each one full of irons, and at times, marshmallows, with spoken word or memorable music performed nearby).

Covia Corporation is one of North America's leading producers and distributors of non-metallic industrial minerals. At its two sites in the Kawartha Lakes Region, the company mines and processes Nepheline, a premier deposit of the rare and highly valued industrial mineral. Nepheline is very important in the making of glass and ceramics. It reduces the amount of energy its manufacturers need to use as well as improving the quality of the finished product. The company’s modernization project will consolidate Covia’s Kawartha plants into one modernized plant at Blue Mountain. This will also reduce its use of water and consumption of electricity. The Canadian Nepheline sites have been a part of the local community since 1935.

Donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) through the estate of Mary West in 1991 – a descendant of the Wests who originally owned the farm at Westben — the property protects wetlands and forests in the Trout Creek and Trent River watersheds.

The reserve is an important part of the local conservation network, helping to provide carbon storage, flood mitigation, and clean drinking water to the local community.

Skip ahead to page 52, for more information on our Sounds in Nature Series

The forests and wetlands of the Mary West Nature Reserve make it an important habitat for many native species, including species at risk like butternut, wood thrush, and snapping turtle. Removing invasive species, restoration activities, and providing visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience are just some of the ways the NCC cares for the Mary West Nature Reserve.

Sound & Environmental Partnerships

Creating intimate and creative connections with the environment is an integral part of the Westben experience. It should come as no surprise then that we are actively working towards weaving sustainability into everything we do. From enhancing the festival's waste, water, and food systems to planting native tree species across the farm and supporting our local bird friends, we are passionately learning, planning, and taking action to ensure the wellbeing of our local and global ecosystems for years to come! And we want you to be a part of it all! Join the Westben Sustainability Team! Westben is heartily seeking volunteers with a passion for caring for the long-term health of the environment, community, and arts to be a part of Westben's Sustainability Team! No time to commit to the Team? Send us your ideas and dreams instead! We’d love to hear from you! Please email Ben Finley at ben@westben.ca to learn more. IMAGINE... drop-in dance classes, game nights, intimate concerts, workshops, public chats & more! Continuing a legacy of community gathering & shared learning. Help us bring people together at The Schoolhouse... A history of gatherings

Named after the West family, the original owners of the property, The West Schoolhouse had slate blackboards added in 1906, and was electrified in 1949. When rural schools closed in 1967, the Schoolhouse was purchased by the Seymour West Women’s Institute and beautifully maintained for over 40 years of meetings and luncheons. Jeannette Sanderson and Ken Layton bought it in 2013, and remain very grateful that they no longer have to arrive at 5 am to light the fire before their much-loved Zumba classes, folk concerts, and other community events. To Westben, The Schoolhouse is a place of possibility, brimming with potential for future community gatherings, rich learning experiences among friends, and of course, more music and fun! It's also the home of our Box Office. Pop by for a visit and experience it for yourself!

The Schoolhouse Westben is Growing!

Perhaps you've seen it on your way to Westben. The poetic and warm brick building known as SS#4 West’s School, is located on County Road 30 just nort of Campbellford and Westben’s beloved Barn. It was built in 1890 by Charles Dunk and Louis Breault to replace an earlier frame schoolhouse that had burned to the ground -- a cottage-roofed building made of logs.

What is the PCR? (No, not that PCR!)

"Creating Apart, Sounding Together" was also the first concert of the year to "awaken" The Barn -- and what an evening it was!

In 2022, the Performer-Composer Residency (PCR) celebrated five years of creative encounters. 40 participants gathered in digital and physical space, sharing sound, stories, places and practices. The 2022 PCR showcase

The participants of the PCR often find themselves in between categories of composing music and bringing it to life in real-time, and we try to cheer that on! We say, “how fascinating!” to the complex intersections we inhabit as we seek to share and create music together from our unique cultural positions and realities. What’s incredible is what emerges in this encouraging and generative meeting space; it reinvigorates us to find vibrant, just, and sustainable ways of living together and to meaningfully address social inequities and planetary imbalances.

Born and bred in Germany, Kaeshammer began performing club, theatre, and festival stages throughout Europe in his early teens and continued on that trajectory after emigrating to Canada’s West Coast with his family in the mid-‘90s. His first studio album, Blue Keys, dropped in 1996 and spurred a consistent sequence of heralded releases and high-profile international performances. The world watched as he grew from child prodigy to full-fledged phenom, from unparalleled pianist to virtuosic songwriter.

JUNO-award winning Michael Kaeshammer has invested countless hours at the keyboard, hundreds of recordings, thousands of live performances, millions of miles in the air and on the road all in pursuit of a mastery of 12 notes across 88 keys. Over the course of decades as a professional performer, he has developed a style that weaves threads of classical, jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, stride, and even pop into a signature and sought-after sonic tapestry.

Ungerleider is the recipient of a Genie Award for Best Original Song and a Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. She has been nominated for two Juno Awards each for Best Roots and Traditional Album of the Year, as well as two Canadian Folk Music Awards for Best Solo Performer and for Best Contemporary Singer of the Year. 2017’s A Girl in Teen City was met with high critical acclaim and has earned three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. For over two decades, thousands of shows, and nine critically acclaimed albums, Suzie Ungerleider’s gloriously emotive, crystalline voice, her bewitching performances and her fierce songwriting have consistently captivated audiences, her peers and the press. Now based again in her hometown of Vancouver, she made the recent ‘My Name is Suzie Ungerleider’ with producer Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards).

It’s her first album since the artist formerly known as Oh Susanna announced that she would now record and perform under her birth name. It’s the tenth solo studio album by the American-born, Canadian-raised artist revered for such landmark records as ‘Johnstown‘, ‘Sleepy Little Sailor‘ and ‘A Girl in Teen City‘.

WESTBEN.CA l 1.877.833.5777 32 Around The Campfire

The decision to say “so long” to her long-time moniker Oh Susanna is both a personal and political decision, fuelled by her realization that ‘Oh Susanna,’ the Stephen Foster song of 1848, contained racist imagery and a belief system that she wanted no part of. She came to understand its historic associations to Minstrelsy, a tradition both demeaning and dehumanizing to Black people. Leaving Oh Susanna behind, Ungerleider has become her true self with a wonderful record that marks a fresh beginning, a collection of new compositions that refresh and redefine who Suzie Ungerleider is.

Julian Taylor’s inherently cinematic approach to his storytelling has a lot to do with his heritage and upbringing. “It’s an interesting thing to be part Mohawk and part West Indian, because I’ve always had this feeling that I never fit in anywhere,” he admits. “These stories are all coming from a person who tries to fit in, but doesn’t quite fit in. That’s really what my work has always been about — that longing to be a part of something.”

WESTBEN.CA l 1.877.833.5777 34 Around The Campfire

His extensive experience as bandleader, band-member, and solo artist has all prepared him for how to best zero in on his prime directive as a songwriter. With the eight deeply intimate songs that comprise his striking new solo effort, The Ridge, Taylor taps into the vein of shared experiences by way of a personalized point of view – a gift shared by only the best Co-producedsongwriters. by Taylor and longtime collaborator Saam Hashemi, mixed by Hashemi, and mastered by Noah Mintz, the recently-released The Ridge was recorded at The Woodshed, a Toronto-area studio owned by a Canadian alt-country stalwarts Blue Rodeo. The album is the aural result of a songwriter clearly embracing his prime. Intersecting the crossroads of Mark Knopfler, Gordon Lightfoot, and Robbie Robertson, each song represents an acoustic-driven mixture of styles that reflects Taylor’s broad stylistic range. He was once the creative that fronted the alt-rocking collective Staggered Crossing as well as the namesake behind the fine funk and R&B-driven foundation of the still-active Julian Taylor Band. Ultimately, what Taylor’s music conveys is that you cannot label or confine him to any given genre box — and that’s exactly what he prefers.

He is a member of the Bear Clan, was born the seventh son of Andrew C. Maracle (Mohawk, Turtle Clan) and Lillian J. Maracle (Scottish, Bruce Clan) and lived his first 10 years of life on the Akwesasne Mohawk Reserve, St. Regis New York.

An acclaimed stone carver & sculptor, David turned to music when he needed to take a break from carving. David discovered that he could convey through his music the same goals that he strived toward with his sculptures; getting his message to the people. Not only a talented singer and songwriter, David also mastered many other instruments, including the Iroquoian and Celtic flutes, native hand drums and many other percussion instruments. With no formal music training, David believes his talents are a gift from the Creator, which he gives thanks for daily and never takes for granted.

David has been involved with numerous commercials and television scores and has been dubbed “the mood master” by many of his fellow musicians.

David’s accolades include such credits as a CAMA multi-award winner for various categories, two gold records globally for his album “Spirit Flutes.” He Won the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Awards for Best Instrumental Album 2007, Worldwide. His 17th CD entitled The Best of DAVID R. MARACLE was recently released, and a global video also released entitled SPIRIT CANYONS. Played to the Queen for her Jubilee, played at the Opening of the Sydney Olympic Games 2000, and played in concert in Barbados with Tim Rice (LION KING, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA).

David Maracle has a deep understanding of and appreciation for his Mohawk Haudenosaunee roots. Sitting with and listening to his Indigenous Elders has been the biggest inspiration in life. His work with artists like Jimmy Rankin, Two Hours Traffic, David Myles, Sarah Slean, Shotgun Jimmie, Dennis Ellsworth, Old Man Luedecke, Dave Marsh, Colleen Brown and longtime collaborator Mo Kenney has led to numerous awards for production, and turned New Scotland Yard into a popular destination for artists looking to develop and document their sound. In all aspects of his work, Plaskett embraces both the communal and individual experiences music provides, ever reminding us that we aren’t alone.

Plaskett’s songs are a perennial part of the national playlist, a fixture on “best of” lists, and the soundtrack to the lives of faithful fans across the country and around the world. His accolades over a quarter century include a Juno, numerous East Coast Music, Canadian Folk and Music Nova Scotia awards, and two Polaris short list nominations.

Plaskett has worked his way up from small clubs to opening for Paul McCartney and the Tragically Hip, and filling larger venues with his own devoted audience.

Plaskett is a versatile and ever-evolving artist. His records reflect his attention to detail, his dedication to technique, musical history and craft, and a sincere and inimitable lyrical style that runs through his diverse and ever-expanding catalogue.

William’s family home, the community of Peguis First Nation, is named for Prince’s ancestor, Chief Peguis, one of the highest regarded leaders of his time. When Chief Peguis was baptized, he took the name William King; in keeping with royal protocol, as an expression of pride and with the unknown weight of the consequences of all of the decisions he made with the arrival of colonizers on the land, named his children Princes. Like names, Gospel First Nation links generations, from son to father to grandfather and back even further. For Prince, the making of Gospel First Nation was an act of building a bridge between worlds at-odds, a way to find harmony in conflicting, complex truths.

“Aspreachers.ayoung person, I never fully understood why the divide between cultural and Christian First Nations people existed,” says Prince. “In actuality, the very singing of these songs and belief in a Lord and Saviour is the success of a plan to extinguish Indian identity. This album is an amalgamation of two realms.” In its humble and extraordinarily personal way, Gospel First Nation honours this story while making a statement of startling, radical magnitude. William Prince says this album is 100 years in the making. Look inside the derelict chapel: it’s also 100 years in the unmaking.

Winnipeg songwriter William Prince approaches the big questions with humility and curiosity. Prince’s influences and references, from the gospel of his childhood to the pantheon of classic outlaw country singers, baseball and the great beyond, shape his approach to songcraft, a masterclass in skillful simplicity.

Born herself out of the ashes of several former Montreal projects (Lonely Boa, MagicPerm), Finley began a hectic 2020 by turning her back on both a graduate program and a full-time career with plans of committing to creative pursuits. After nearly a decade of Montreal bonafides in art circuits as diverse as drone sleepovers, classical concert halls, and pop band house parties, Finley’s first solo effort shows the mark of a practiced craftsman bent on superstardom. With an approach rooted as much in baroque neoclassicism as popstar bombast, Finley’s latest proves a daring effort from an exceptional artist at the top of her game.

In fact, the small insect’s retreat to cocoon is anything but a sabbatical. Within the chrysalis walls, a violent mutation churns, a corrosive goo stripping fleshy foundations to solder new forms, assemble colored beauty. Chrysalia, Montreal multi-instrumentalist Eve Parker Finley’s stunning debut full-length, holds within it that same gooey potion, expending the burden of terrestrial flesh to build toward some colourful winged future. “John Showman has made his mark as “one of the very best and most influential fiddle players in Canada” (Steve Pritchard, CIUT 89.5 FM).

Around The Campfire

Through twenty years and a couple of thousand shows together in bands such as The Foggy Hogtown Boys and The Lonesome Ace Stringband, John Showman and Chris Coole have developed a deep and instinctual musical bond. Their music lurks around a truly unique space that is somewhere on the outskirts of old-time, bluegrass, and folk. The songs of John Hartford, Hank Williams, Dock Boggs, and The Band share space with the fiddle tunes of Eck Robertson and Ed Haley. The duo’s original songs and tunes take in all these vistas and paint something both personal and timely.

In over two decades as a professional musician, he has gone from plying his trade as the charismatic bassist in top Canadian rock bands The Watchmen and Thornley (he is featured on six gold and platinum records) to then emerging as an eloquent roots-based singer/songwriter and guitarist with a prolific solo career. Over the span of his career, Gunning has released thirteen albums, received a Juno Award nomination and has been awarded two Canadian Folk Music Awards and recognized with eight East Coast Music Awards. The fruits of his labour are now vividly on display in his latest collection of songs, Up Against The Sky. The relaxed and intimate feel of the record reflects its method of creation. “I focused a lot on tones and the vibe, rather than strategic parts on this one. Sarah Harmer has established herself among the pantheon of legendary female songwriters this country has produced. She is now making a much-anticipated return to the stage in support of her 2020 album, Are You Gone.

Harmer has been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, garnered two JUNO Awards, and been widely praised for her “razor-sharp songwriting chops”(NPR Music)and “plainly hooky” melodic sensibility(Rolling Stone).

Her sixth album and first in a decade,Are You Goneis a deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of the climate crisis, and the question of loss. She calls it a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut,You Were Here, whichTIMEcalled the year’s best debut album. Nearly 20 years after that release,Are You Gonebrought a close to Harmer's period of musical quietude with a rousing artistic statement, rich in detail and emotion, from the heart and for the spirit.

KUNÉ (which means together in Esperanto) was created at the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2016 in Toronto - Canada. Over one hundred musicians responded to the call for auditions and only twelve were selected to become part of the ensemble. The group was intended to be a short-term project that showcased the talent of immigrant musicians living in Toronto. But after their Koerner Hall debut, the collective was approached by different presenters, which then lead into performances at festivals like Sunfest, Hillside and Ness Creek in Canada, theaters like the National Music Center in Alberta, the National Arts Center in Ottawa and collaborations with symphonies like the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. The group was invited to record an album at the Banff Center for the Arts and in 2018, and their first album was released by Universal Music AfterCanada.touring

KUNÉ is an eleven-piece collective made up of ten immigrant musicians from all over the world and one Metis Canadian. KUNE’s artistic practice captures and recreates the experience of living in Toronto, one of the world's most diverse cities. The musicians are from places like Iraq, Cuba, Peru, Burkina-Faso and China. The instruments they play are not often played together on stage; like the Tar, the Dizi, the Cajon and the Ngoni. It is a space in which to remember where we come from and learn from each other’s differences.
