Artistic & Managing Director's Message We’re Back! How thrilling to say that! We are so looking forward to seeing you again at Westben in the days ahead, first for our Welcome Back Weekend at the end of July, and then for our new Open Air Fall Fest in September.
You might imagine that it has been pretty quiet around The Barn, and in a way it has. But in another way, it has been a veritable beehive of exciting activity. Following the production of 12 Digital Concerts at The Barn in 2020, we have already started on Season two, with three new productions already recorded, which will be broadcast over the next year. The recent 2021 Performer-Composer Residency welcomed 48 creators from 13 cities over 10 time zones to explore new musical and cultural collaborations. We have added two more outdoor venues to the grounds: Willow Hill, a natural amphitheater just beyond the pond, and The Campfire, nestled in a quiet corner of the meadow. We have also reconfigured The Barn to allow for physically distanced seating. Add to all this, the exciting acquisition of the West Schoolhouse as our new administrative center and box office, and soon-to-be year-round location of performances, learning, and gathering. Throughout, one thing has remained remarkably constant: the outstanding support of a myriad of members, sponsors, and donors, all of whom have continued to cheer Westben on through these challenging times. We are also tremendously grateful to all levels of government who have offered vital support and encouragement. And finally, heartfelt thanks to the truly inspirational Board and Staff. It takes a whole village to raise a child, but it takes a truly remarkable village to continue to walk beside that child through such unexpected challenges. So now here we are, brimming with new energy and ready to welcome you back to share the joy of live music in person! It is a Sunny Day – regardless of the weather! Brian Finley, C.M. A Message from our Board Chair Welcome… Back to the Barn. We missed you! As a centre that puts “connection” first, the sharp, sudden disconnect from performers, audience members, learners, volunteers, partners, and friends was a dizzying moment for the Westben team. But we are immensely proud of the reimagined connections that were quickly established since last spring, through our digital concerts, virtual gatherings, and expanded online residencies, and we hope that we brought you some sunshine when times were hard. For the first time. Our local community has been changed by the pandemic, as more people have discovered the magic of living in a place of rolling fields, bird songs, and ribbons of country roads. We are so excited to introduce you to the musical spirit of Westben. We hope you find lasting friendships and unforgettable experiences here. We have also, through the past year and a bit extended the feel of the Barn virtually into places beyond Trent Hills, and we hope, when you’re ready, our newest audience members will join us here in person. To our beautiful new fresh air venues. I am literally counting the days to the moment I plant my camp chair on Willow Hill and sit back to enjoy my first live concert in a very long time. I am so looking forward to the crackle of a bonfire and an evening of music with fireflies for light. I can’t wait for the powerhouse voice of Serena Ryder to fill the meadow. And to be there with our community… amazing. To the School House. Our transformation in the past year includes a shift to a single-campus vision for Westben, with the acquisition of an historic schoolhouse adjacent to the existing site, to serve as our long-term administrative hub, box office, and all-season gathering space. We hope you will consider buying a brick and ringing the school bell!
To the other side of isolation. We truly hope this is the other side. We are embracing and learning the new normal. As part of the Westben Board of Directors, I can tell you that the survival of our organization through a global pandemic with profoundly local impacts has been fuelled by very specific things: the financial supports from our governments, donors, and members, which sustained us when in-person events were gone; a devoted and hard-working staff who adapted rapidly and brought our digital contributions to life; and, thoughtful, positive and sustained leadership from Brian and Donna. We are acknowledging what we have come through with music, creativity and how we do our work – acknowledging not just the impact of COVID-19. We acknowledge the histories that have disrupted and distanced connections between communities. We acknowledge the natural spaces that have long been part of Westben’s special quality, and which have much longer been filled with the music of our Mississauga First Nation friends. Westben’s commitment is to bring people together through music, and we honor our role in that regard, now more than ever.

Welcome to our NEW Open-Air Venues! Willow Hill Willow Hill is a natural amphitheatre by the willow tree and pond, just north of The Barn. Bring your own lawn chair and picnic or order a Westben picnic to enjoy on this grassy, natural amphitheatre.
The Campfire The Campfire Venue is an intimate experience for 20 with a Westben performing artist. There will be smores, beverages, and time to chat with the artist. Enjoy the sunset evening of music in the outdoors. Remember to bring your own lawn chair or blanket with you, we will take care of the rest!

New Open-Air Venues
Mary West Nature Reserve Located right across the road from Westben is the Mary West Nature Reserve (38 hectares/95 acres)—home to towering white pines, spring peepers, a beautiful river, and the at-risk eastern wood pewee.
Donated to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) through the estate of Mary West in 1991 – a descendant of the Wests who originally owned the farm at Westben — the property protects wetlands and forests in the Trout Creek and Trent River watersheds. The reserve is an important part of the local conservation network, helping to provide carbon storage, flood mitigation, and clean drinking water to the local community. The forests and wetlands of the Mary West Nature Reserve make it an important habitat for many native species, including species at risk like butternut, wood thrush, and snapping turtle. Removing invasive species, restoration activities, and providing visitors with a safe and enjoyable experience are just some of the ways the NCC cares for the Mary West Nature Reserve.

Sound & Environmental Partnerships
Westben is excited to continue developing an ecomusicological relationship with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). One of the things that makes the Westben experience unique is its sound relationship with its surrounding environment.
Imagine the doors of the timber frame Barn rolling open to the meadow as the sounds of birds, breezes and leaves intermingle with musical outpourings— welcoming and enhancing each other. Westben is a venue that embraces all kinds of anthrophony (sounds made by humans), biophony (sounds made by non-human living organisms) and geophony (sounds made by non-living entities such as the wind, rain, and thunder).

Familiar Places
The Barn
Nestled amongst the peaceful hills of Northumberland County two hours east of Toronto, near Campbellford, Westben's primary performance venue is a custom-built, timber-frame barn. The Barn seats 400 and combines stateof-the-art acoustics with a rustic yet sophisticated atmosphere. On sunny days from June to September massive walls and doors roll away allowing music to waft over the surrounding meadow. This year The Barn has been reconfigured to provide socially distant seating in cabaret-style pods. Our barn doors can open completely on warm days to allow for a pleasant breeze throughout the space. Large fans have been put in place to also increase air circulation.

The West Schoolhouse
The beautiful brick building known as SS#4 West’s School, is located on County Road 30 just north of Campbellford and Westben’s Barn. It was built in 1890 by Charles Dunk and Louis Breault to replace an earlier frame schoolhouse that had burned to the ground. The first schoolhouse was a cottage roofed building made of logs. Westben's NEW Box Office, Rehearsal Hall, & Community Space! Located at 6788 County Road 30 North Campbellford. Just North of The Barn!
History Named after the West family which had previously owned the property, The Schoolhouse had slate blackboards added in 1906, was electrified in 1949, and later, an addition provided washrooms a welcome improvement on the outside wooden “closets”. When the rural schools closed in 1967 the property was purchase by the Women’s Institute and beautifully maintained until sold in 2013 to Jeannette Sanderson and Ken Layton who remain very grateful that they don’t have to arrive at five in the morning to light the fire before classes begin. The Schoolhouse Capital Campaign
Westben is asking for your help to reach a fund-raising target of $400,000 in support of a capital campaign to purchase the West Schoolhouse; an historic, one-room schoolhouse right next to Westben. Funds raised through the Campaign will be used to purchase the West Schoolhouse and make the improvements necessary to get it operational.

2021 Performer Composer Residency
The Performer-Composer Residency (PCR) is an international and intergenerational celebration of creative music-making. Instead of traditional teacher-student models, the PCR is a gathering of exchanges where a wide range of musical practices and perspectives are enthusiastically encouraged. The participants of the PCR often find themselves in between categories of composing music and bringing it to life in real-time, and we try to cheer that on! We say, “how fascinating!” to the complex intersections we inhabit as we seek to share and create music together from our unique cultural positions and realities. What’s incredible is what emerges from this encouragement and meeting space; it reinvigorates us to find vibrant, just, and sustainable ways of living together and to meaningfully address social inequities and planetary imbalances. More than a summation of technical and musical abilities, pianist Philip Chiu has become one of Canada’s leading musicians through his infectious love of music and his passion for communication and collaboration. He is an acclaimed accompanist/coach based at McGill University, has been an invited professor-accompanist for the Conservatoire de musique de Montreal, and regularly accompanies at l’Universite de Montreal. He has toured numerous times with premier touring organizations, Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Prairie Debut, and Debut Atlantic.

Currently calling Campbellford home, Ken Tizzard is known on the Canadian rock scene as the powerhouse bassist in The Watchmen and Thornley. Over the past 15 years, Ken has also carefully crafted his other persona, that of an eloquent rootsy singer/songwriter now with eight solo albums in his varied discography. Imagine that by the Campfire!
