The Spectacular Atlantic Ocean

Impressive in so many ways!

Covering 20.8% of the entire globe’s surface, the Atlantic creates shorelines for 52 countries and is the youngest and saltiest of Earth’s five oceans! In its central depths, it hides the world’s longest mountain range, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which can be seen from space. Its most dangerous part is not the Bermuda Triangle, but the rugged, stormy North Sea. It’s had many names throughout history, including “The Sea of Atlas” — named after the Greek mythological titan who was punished by Zeus. Nowadays, we offhandedly refer to the Atlantic as “The Pond.”

Stay right where you are

Directly in front of the Omni® pool deck lie 3.5 miles of pristine quartz sands so white they match the clouds. Swaying grasses in the dunes and gently crashing waves create the perfect soundtrack. Take a refreshing dip in the glorious Atlantic, then relax in the shade under a rented cabana or umbrella or join in one of the resort-run recreational beach games! Sunrises treat early birds to a rainbow of color that stretches along the horizon.

Who turned off the lights?

The Atlantic Ocean is home to the largest number of sea turtles, with the vast majority of them living along the Florida coastline. Because they come ashore from May through October to nest, the Omni turns off its outdoor, ocean-facing lights, so the lights don’t confuse the turtles. Plus, it gives them a little privacy!

Take a horseback ride

Enjoy the Atlantic coastline in an extraordinary way! No experience? No problem. Amelia Island Horseback Riding, located just four miles away, has more than 30 years of experience guiding ride tours. Their beautiful horses are gentle, well-spoiled and are trained to carry riders of all experience levels.

Go on a treasure hunt

Wake up early and enjoy a quiet beachcombing stroll. Treasures commonly found on Amelia Island shores include sand dollars, prized shark teeth and a nice variety of shells: scallops, olives, moon shells, tulips and whelks.

Oak Marsh Championship Course: 6,471 yards, 18 holes, par 72

Originally designed by Pete Dye in 1972, the shorter yardage of Oak Marsh delivers quality over quantity. It treats players to a winding stroll along marsh creeks and lovely tree-lined views. Players are challenged by tight fairways and small greens, strategically placed bunkers and 14 water hazards.

After undergoing a $7.4-million-dollar renovation by Beau Welling, this course recently reopened on May 16, 2025. While preserving Dye’s architectural vision, Welling reworked bunkers and enhanced some fairway angles to require better strategic approaches. Better brush up on your geometry for this one! In addition to numerous other tournaments, Oak Marsh hosted the 1991 PGA Section Championship and the 1992 Society of Seniors Championship.

Oak Marsh awards include:

• Golfweek® — Best Courses You Can Play in Florida 2023

• Golf Channel — Top 40 Golf Courses in Florida

• Golf Digest — Top 75 Resort Courses in the U.S.

Little Sandy Short Course: 928 yards, 10 holes, par 30

This walking course was designed by Beau Welling for players of all ages and skill levels. Don’t be fooled, however, the contours of these greens still provide plenty of challenges.

The course hugs the relaxing Red Maple Lake edges, and course music adds to the fun atmosphere. The 10th green is a lake “island” that gives players a real chance to end on an ace! Little Sandy is a great way to enjoy a round but still have time to discover other exciting Amelia Island adventures, too.

Little Sandy awards include:

• Florida’s First Coast of Golf — #4 Top Courses on Amelia Island

• Sports Illustrated® — Best Short Course 2022

Tennis Courts: 23 quick-drying Har-Tru® clay courts!

Operated by Cliff Drysdale Tennis®, the Omni tennis program caters to all experience levels and is one of the most prestigious tennis programs in the world. The Resort has hosted many legends, including Andre Agassi, Chrissie Evert, Martina Navratilova and Serena and Venus Williams.

Tennis awards include:

• Tennis Magazine — Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the U.S.

• USTA® — Outstanding Tennis Facility Award Winner 2024

Tour the museum first, then visit the fort

Construction began on Fort Clinch in 1847. Named after General Duncan Clinch, the pentagon-shaped fort never saw battle. It was held during the Civil War by Robert E. Lee until 1862 and was garrisoned again in 1898 during the SpanishAmerican War. Today, thanks to FDR’s creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, Fort Clinch is one of bestpreserved 19th century forts in America! Tour the prison, infirmary, barracks, kitchens, workshops and more. Costumed actors answer questions about life as a Civil War soldier. Smooth-bore cannons and magnificent views of St. Marys River and the Cumberland Sound meeting the Atlantic are found on the gun deck. With binoculars, you might see Cumberland Island’s wild horses!

Get in more beach time

Amelia Island has some of the clearest Atlantic waters in the world and the Island is teeming with indigenous and migratory wildlife. You are invited to “share the shore” and “leave only your footprints.” During certain times, nesting areas are roped off.

The beach south of the jetty is known for surf fishing and beachcombing. A variety of sharks’ teeth can be found here, and sometimes even Megalodon teeth! Look for black teeth, no pearly whites here. There are no lifeguards on duty so, swim at your own risk. On the shore north of the jetty, fishing and beachcombing are still plentiful, but there’s more sunbathing and beach birds. Dolphins make appearances and deer are often spotted at dusk.

Hit the trails

Willow Pond is actually the name of several coastal depression ponds. Two brief loop trails circle the ponds providing great opportunities to enjoy Florida’s maritime hammocks and plentiful wildlife! Numerous wading and shore birds can be spotted as well as owls, osprey, deer, raccoons, tortoises, armadillos and more. Less often, you might see a bobcat or alligator or two. Canopy Road is a stunning three-mile car drive or bike ride under the live oaks adorned with orchids, ferns or dripping Spanish mosses. Additionally, the park has six miles of wooded trails to explore.

Unique fabric construction conforms to the cables placed within, greatly reducing wasted space compared with rigid innerduct.

Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach is not a beach at all! It’s the historic district with 400 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Isle of Eight Flags

Fernandina Beach was first inhabited by the Timucua native people. Control of the area changed frequently throughout its history, earning Fernandina the nickname The Isle of Eight Flags. Here are some of its famous buildings:

• Amelia Island Welcome Center (1899) — This former train station served the first cross-state railroad built by David Yulee, a developer and U.S. Senator.

• Post Office, Customs House, and Courthouse (1891) — This impressive building was built in the classic revival style.

• The Lesesne House [pronounced le- sane] (1860) — The home of Dr. John Lesesne, who treated injured Civil War soldiers.

Eat and drink to fuel your exploration

Here are just a few of the many selections available:

• España Restaurant & Tapas — Try a satisfying fresh seafood paella. Ask about the fresh daily catch.

• The Happy Tomato — Serves up delicious barbeque and tall sandwiches.

• The Palace Saloon — The oldest saloon in Florida (est. 1903) is still in operation as a “watering hole for modern pirates and sea dogs.”

• Mocama Beer and Mocama Coffee — Stop in for your kind of brew! Hanging starburst pendant lights give this space a very cool vibe.

Shopping is like breathing in this part of town

Curate your next piece of home décor at one of the many local artist galleries, specialty boutiques or antique shops. Here are some other fun shops to browse:

• JJ Cooper — Men can find their next fashion look here. Shop Bugatchi, Fish Hippie, Paige Denim and many other brands.

• Olive Amelia — Bring home an infused olive oil: wild mushroom and sage, blood orange and more. There are also many infused vinegars, including: orange and vanilla or cinnamon and pear.

• The Lavender Store — “Made with lavender. Made with love.” Indulge in all things lavender: personal, pet and home goods.

The Island’s Maritime Forest

And a couple of tree tales!

The southeastern maritime forest or maritime hammock is canopy of mainly coastal dune hardwood trees that stretches from Georgia to Cape Canaveral. The existence of this forest is critical to the existence of so many other species of wildlife including more than 300 species of shore and migratory birds.

Trees that comprise maritime forests must be able to withstand salt spray, high winds and sandy soils. In this case, live oaks are the heroes of Amelia Island. Their amazing strength comes from widespread trunks, shorter heights and roots that can extend up to three times their trunk’s width. Branches are lengthy and outstretched, but wind passes freely through the sparser leaf density and twists them into beautifully sculpted forms. As Munsell McPhillips explains in her video Living in Our Maritime Forest, “Roots strengthen the soil and the canopy protects the soil.”

Other magnificent trees found here include saw palmettos, red cedars, red maples, pines, magnolias, several holly varieties and more, including the critical wax myrtle. So, why are wax myrtles important and how does a maritime forest grow? It starts with the proliferation of dune grasses. Next, the nitrogen-absorbing wax myrtles grow. Soil microbes at the myrtle’s roots convert absorbed nitrogen to nitrate and ammonia which helps to prompt the growth of other greenery. Learn more at AmeliaTreeConservancy.org.

Historical rescue

The Omni® Amelia Island Resort & Spa almost didn’t exist. In the late 1960s, its land nearly became a titanium strip mine. Fortunately, Charles Fraser and his Sea Pines Company had a better plan. He purchased large swaths of the island’s south and built roads and developments, preserving 50% of the original forest areas when doing so. Thus, many an ancient live oak was spared.
