Take a hike on the wild side!
More than 300 acres of protected, but undeveloped, wetland ecosystems are what makes Egans Creek Greenway so special. This unique area can be explored through six grass-covered trails: five for walking and one for mountain biking. Maps and benches are found along the way as well as an extensive variety of wildlife: birds, alligators, turtles, marsh rabbits, river otters, deer, snakes and more! Being able to observe them in the wild is truly a rare opportunity. Every hike is different. You never know what you might see!

Wading birds you might see include various herons and egrets. Magnificent ospreys, hawks and eagles have also been observed, in addition to various songbirds. Some of the most celebrated sightings include: the bright pink roseate spoonbill, the redcapped pileated woodpecker, the wood stork with its striking black-edged wings and the anhinga (or snakebird) named for the snake-like movements of its long neck.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida is home to roughly 1.3 million alligators, and alligators are found in “practically all fresh and brackish water bodies and occasionally in salt water.” Unprovoked attacks are very rare — a 1 in 3.1 million chance. Still, stay safely away from the water’s edge. Young alligators have lighter banding that fades as they mature. If you see babies, expect that Mama is nearby. Although the average clutch contains 38 eggs, fewer than 70% of young alligators survive. Here’s a “cool” fact. Their gender is determined by the nest temperature, not chromosomes. An environment of 91°F or higher tends to produce males while temperatures around 86°F produce females. Alligators can live up to 60 years old in the wild.
The northern portion of Egans Creek is comprised of saltmarshes and maritime forests and is sunny, providing a welcoming environment for wading birds. Enter from Atlantic Avenue where the Atlantic Rec Center is located as well as restrooms. The southern portion features a denser tree hammock and freshwater, improving your chances to spot an alligator, since they cannot spend long periods of time in saltwater. Enter from Residence Inn® parking lot on Sadler Road. Trailheads can also be found at Beech Street, Hickory Street and at Jasmine Street which is the dividing point for the north and south portions.
Bring bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, drinking water, your “inside” voice, binoculars and maybe a blanket to sit on. Most importantly, please don’t approach or attempt to feed any of the animals. Admission and parking are free.

The trees that have fallen from 30-foot bluffs now help protect remaining trees by slowing erosion from weathering winds and hurricane waves. Reaching the beach requires an easy half-mile hike. Wear good walking shoes and use bug spray. Facilities are located at the park entrance.
While swimming is not allowed at Boneyard Beach, there is still much to do — in addition to taking photos! Picnicking among the massive trees and birdwatching are popular. As part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, the beach creates a habitat for a wide variety of birds. Terns, ospreys, pelicans, owls, plovers, bald eagles and more can be spotted. There are plenty of shells to explore, too. If the shell is still serving as someone’s residence, please be sure to leave the crab and its shell where you found them.
Built by the Spanish in 1798, this public cemetery is approximately 29 acres of history interspersed among live oaks draped in Spanish moss that sways in the Atlantic breeze. As all cemeteries, Bosque Bello whispers the area’s history by honoring those who have gone before.
Among Bosque Bello’s many residents are soldiers from several wars, including the Napoleonic, Revolutionary, SpanishAmerican and Civil Wars. The earliest, still-existing grave belongs to Captain Peter Bouissou de Nica, a French soldier, who died at the age of 56 in 1813. Amos Latham, another soldier, served with General George Washington at Valley Forge and in the Battle of Monmouth, NJ. Latham also served as the first keeper of the Amelia Island Lighthouse in 1838. The Sisters of St. Joseph, nuns who built schools after the Civil War, have a section marked by identical crosses. Also laid to rest at Bosque Bello is local legend James “Uncle Jimmy” Drummond. Best known for his “trained” pet snakes, refusal to go to the doctor and spellbinding tales of treasure hunts and pirates, Uncle Jimmy is said to have been 107 years old when he died from diphtheria in 1933. Bosque Bello is also where Canada’s gold medal figure skater Barbara Hand Scott King (“Canada’s Sweetheart”) is buried. The new section, added in 1945, includes several graves that are protected by truly inspiring angel statues.

Let these wild, wild horses drag you away — away from Amelia Island, that is. Just a 45-minute ferry ride away lies Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia where you can see wild horses on the beach and elsewhere. These 120 to 170 horses are descendants of those brought to the island by English settlers in the 18th century.
In addition to horses, the island features beautiful tree-tunnel pathways for biking and hiking and plenty of other wildlife. From the beach, dolphins, crabs and various sea birds can be spotted. Further inland, racoons, armadillos, deer, pigs, coyotes and alligators might be seen.
There’s a historical element to this island as well. The ruins of the 59-room Dungeness Mansion are what remains of this Carnegie estate, devastated by fire in 1959. Plum Orchard Mansion is one of four mansions built on the island by Lucy Carnegie for her children. The site now offers 45-minute guided tours and restrooms. Buy drinks and food on the ferry as options on the island are extremely limited.
It’s Florida! You’ve got to see the manatees! At Silver Springs State Park, the turquoise water is as clear as the kayaks! Paddle the Silver River and enjoy these gentle giants as they drift along to the background music of a bird symphony. These “sea cows” graze on riverbed seagrass, helping to maintain the ecological balance. And, they graze a lot, typically weighing 800 to 1200 pounds! Bring a GoPro® to submerge and you might hear them munching. You also have the chance of seeing Rhesus Macaque monkeys, otters and turtles on this tour! Additionally, Silver Springs has been the set for several movies, including Creature from the Black Lagoon, Rebel without a Cause, six Tarzan movies and more.

Never kayaked before? Great! Here’s your chance to get out of your comfort zone. Paddling instructions and safety vests are provided. To preserve the clarity of the kayaks, no shoes, sunscreen or bug spray are allowed. A dry bag will be provided to store your shoes and bugs are not prevalent on this tour. Wear a hat and bring a water bottle.

We’ve booked the perfect time to visit Amelia Island. In April, plants are in full bloom and the days are a perfect 75°F with breezy evening temperatures around 57°F. Paradise. And remember, it’s Florida. So, if it does rain, showers are brief. It’s an island, so island casual clothing is accepted and expected: shorts and t-shirts, flip-flops, comfortable walking shoes and sandals. Khakis and a polo shirt, or a sundress with a coverup, will suffice for a more upscale dinner. Florida does get humid, although more so in the summer months. Still, consider breathable fabrics: cotton and linens will work well to keep you comfortable. Depending on your activity choices, you might want to bring golf attire; casual long pants and a long-sleeved shirt or two to protect against mosquitos; a lightweight rain jacket; beachwear; snorkeling gear; reef-safe, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen; EPA-approved insect repellent; lip balm; a reusable water bottle; binoculars and camera equipment. A Program of Events will be waiting for you at the Omni®. We look forward to sharing this exciting adventure with you!
DOs:
• Obtain a REAL ID or current passport. State driver’s licenses are no longer an accepted form of ID for domestic flights as of May 7, 2025. If you’re applying for a passport, apply early. Six weeks processing is considered a rush turnaround.
• Verify that your health insurance coverage is valid.
• Bring a credit card and some cash.
• Be respectful of the local ecosystems. Florida is home to many endangered and endemic plants and animals.
• Practice ocean safety. Check with lifeguards before entering the water. Never turn your back on the ocean. Enjoy the view instead!
• Stay on established trails and don’t join the “Florida Man” headlines just for the perfect selfie.
• Florida tap water is safe to drink, of course, but it may not be pleasing to some palates due to heat, algae and higher sulfur concentrations.
• Pack medications, medical devices and toiletries in compliance with TSA’s 3-1-1 Rule*.
DON’Ts:
• Book airfare, hotel reservations or transportation to and from the airport. Wesco is happy to make these arrangements for you!
• Bring children. This is an adults-only trip.
