Dirty Sanchez from InfoSpace wins EIEF Edge Mobile Award This is my favourite mobile game. Thanks and congrats to our partners! The concept of this game was bourne out of games brainstorm led by Henrik Werdelin while he was still at MTV. I think this is one of the few mobile games that truly relates the essence of a TV programme. Get it and play it! It's really great for boring meetings under the table...

InfoSpace has won the new EIEF (Edinburgh International Entertainment Festival) Edge Mobile Award for its mobile game Dirty Sanchez. Readers of Edge magazine and Edge Online voted to chose the winner from four nominated mobile games developed by InfoSpace, Fountainhead Entertainment and id Software, Gameloft and Digital Chocolate.The EIEF Edge Awards reception at The Jam House, Queen Street, Edinburgh on Monday 21st August was presented by Edge Games editor Margaret Robertson.

XFIRE WoW Machinima Contest & other fun stuff I'm getting excited to see some of the submissions for this year's biggest ever machinima contest hosted by xfire, a company we recently acquired. While machinima is very niche comprising of creators and viewers who are mainly hardcore gamers, I think the creative potential is massive. I believe this emerging genre has the potential to become much more pervasive and mainstream. Although, I think it will largely remain niche, it is likely to gain a much wider audience. With bigger audiences comes the potential for more investment and new cool careers and companies for entreprenurial conent folks (aka "my friends"). Given that hardcore gaming is driven by gaming communities (leagues, teams and players) I think the meshing of social networking that's been going on within gaming for some time with new forms of video art represents a real hotbed of innovation. When I was at gameplay, we expiramented with this, but it was very very early days, so it's great to see how things are progressing.

I like this Secondlife machinima mashup, because it has my mantra in it. My mantra is a saying from Gandhi that "we must be the change we wish to see in the world."

You can also see other ways we can use it with music, particularly music that doesn't have accompanying video like many dance remixes in this Halo 2 machinima.

This machinima movie made with EA Sports Fight Night Round 2 on Xbox shows the rise of a boxer from unknown to amateur heavyweight champion as well as how various musical genres work with these formats.

In addition to being a Dresden Dolls fan and wanting to share them with you, here is a good example of how to combine existing music videos with machinima.

Potentially you can completly reshape the nature of a story as well as cost effectively democratising the story by giving users the opportunity to rewite the script through a text to speech engine. An extreme example is by converting arguably the world's most violent game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City into a love story. Please allow me a funny tangent regarding GTA...

CDN distribution and marketing deal with what was then Enron Broadband Services. I had many concerns about working with Enron at the time which had nothing to do with the fatalistic circumstances Enron encountered in later days which led to their demise. They were trying to roll out a massive network that could have been an ideal online multi-player gaming platform and they chose us as their primary partner.

In one of the late stages of negotiations we were going through the extensive contract line by line with their ultra-consevative Texan lady lawyer. We got to a particular section where we were talking about content that we would provide. I think it must have been the liabilities clause. The content exclusion clause read something to the effect of "gameply will use best practices to ensure that no content will be of an offensive nature including, but not limited to, content of a violent nature." There were at least three long paragraphs in the definitions section which defined "offensive" and also "violent" content. I said, "Oh, I see you've used your standard language here, so how would you suggest we redraft this section in such a way that better reflects the nature of our content and provides you with the protections you're seeking?"

"What do you mean?" the young Barbara Bush wannabe enquired. "Well," I explained, "...if we use this languge then we can't give you any content. You see our content, the content we both seek to profit from, seeks for example to entertain young adults by allowing them to virtually to hold-up an off-license by shooting the owner in the head while the wife stands watching and then beating her to a pulp before stealing a car from a young woman outside the shop, driving the car under the influence causing mass destruction then killing the brave cop who manages to pull you over after you've run into another car. Grand Theft Auto, as it's called, is one of our most played and best selling games." The look of complete shock and disgust was immediately obvious and appeared very genuine. She hadn't taken the time to look at any of our content or any gaming content for that matter before she was hours away from signing a deal valued at hundreds of millions of pounds. Of course, I was intentionally a bit provocative to illustrate the point and to bring her up to speed very quickly.

"That, I'm afraid is a deal breaker," she said. I laughed politely and reminded her it wasn't her decision [why do lawyers often think that a decision about a commercial deal is their decision to take - they are there to advise], but agreed that it might not be a mutually beneficial partnership. We shared some laughs months later and it still makes me giggle to this day.

Avenue Q Rocks!

I saw Avenue Q last week and absolutely LOVED it! I'm jealous and bitter that we didn't come up with it at MTV as it's so similar to one of my favourite programmes in our line-up called Wondershowzen. One of my favourite parts of the production was the "Internet is for Porn" song cleverly machinimised here. I'm curious as to why the marketeers didn't create a viral for the show as it seems like such an obvious tactic. I doubt they are having trouble filling seats...

An interview with one half of the duet gives you greater amusing insight into this character as well as serving as a viral marketing for lastminute.com.

It's amazing how much attention and anticipation surrounds Snakes on a Plane on the internet. I'm dying to see it. It's so absurd. Snakes, a plane and Samuel L. Jackson. I love it already. There's also a part of me that thinks there are some clever viral and guerilla marketeers behind the buzz.
