On 4 October, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that he was “stopping all phases of HS2 north of Birmingham.” He also commented that HS2 “may not reach Euston without private investment.”

and Birmingham is unfortunately still going ahead, causing massive disruption to our day-to-day lives, and wreaking destruction across our landscape. Yet there’s absolutely no benefit for local residents; there never has been, there never will be. I’ll be calling on the Government to devote some of the savings from scrapping Phase 2 of HS2 into improving transport here in the Aylesbury area, because it’s fundamentally wrong for local people to be forced to continue to suffer for a project they knew was a white elephant all along.”

Following the Prime Minister’s announce– ment, Rob Butler, MP for Aylesbury wrote: “I’ve opposed HS2 for years, stating from the very beginning of my election campaign that we didn’t need this railway. It made no sense economically and it made no sense environmentally. It’s right that at last this project has been scrapped, but it is a So how will these most recent changes affect bittersweet moment here in Bucks, because us in Wendover? Continued from Front Page... phase is completed? Wendover News’s Richard Byford asked Murray Cooke, spokesperson for the Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group. He pointed out that construction on HS2 in the area surrounding Wendover will continue unaffected by the recent news. However, the recent changes will affect the number of trains using the line – at least in the foreseeable future. He points out that the number of platforms available to HS2 at the London end under the revised arrangements will place further constraints on how many trains can run per hour (TPH). With platform space a constraint on the time it takes to load each train, he expects that initially HS2 may only be able to run six trains per hour, compared to the 18 TPH capability of the track design.

temporary acquisitions for construction. Yet it is by no means clear what has been acquired temporarily, what is permanent and what is for parts of the projects that have been deleted from plans. Now HS2 is under cost pressure, there is speculation that HS2 may be forced to fall short on some of its promises.”

“In the short term, we anticipate an increase in construction work north of the Green Tunnel that will cover the railway past the bulk of Wendover, to emerge north of the Folly Bridge. HS2’s constructor EKFB claims it will work to mitigate the risk of damage to the Coombe Hill aquifer (see Wendover News September). During the Green Tunnel construction, HS2 estimates that up to 636,000m3 of soil will need to be transferred from the Chilterns excavations on a conveyor line over the A413 to cover the tunnel and to make up ground to the north and Thame Valley plain,” Murray said.

Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group was formed in at a meeting at the Memorial Hall in 2010. It currently has seven expert members, including engineers and scientists, who continue their work to mitigate the impact of HS2’s construction and future operation on behalf of the local community. You can keep up with its work at: https://www.whs2.org

Wendover HS2 Mitigation Group is confident that it has had a profound positive effect on the effects of HS2 on our area, but still has a comprehensive list of future challenges to address, Murray feels. “One of the most substantial issues emerging for Wendover regarding HS2 is the use of the land when construction is completed. Material presented by HS2 has consistently emphasised the effort that has been put into preserving the environment, natural habitats and archaeology. During this time, it has also conducted a comprehensive programme of compulsory purchases and

To understand how the land around Wendover and the surrounding villages will be reinstated, and to hear the thoughts of local people, Wendover Parish Council is holding a public meeting at the Memorial Hall in Wendover on Friday 24 November at 7pm when more information about the state of HS2 will be available and feedback from the community will be sought to get the best outcome for Wendover.

Footnote: Perhaps a small benefit...?

As with all major construction projects, HS2 was obliged to carry out archaeological surveys along the route of the track. For the most part, these were completed last year and finds recorded, catalogued, and put in safe storage. Archaeologists took extraordinary care to record every detail of their excavations, using the best technology available. As a result of this, we are now in a better position to understand the history of Wendover and its development over millennia. Using published information revealed by the work of these archaeologists, Wendover News intends to develop a series of features in which experts speculate about what life looked like in Wendover in previous ages. Keep an eye out for them in future editions!

HS2 at Ellesborough Road

During October the underground utility works required a closure of Ellesborough Road for three weeks to allow installation of ducts enabling BT and UK Power Networks cables to be rerouted. The utility companies are not under HS2’s direct control, and it will take some more time before all the services are moved. Currently the contractor EKFB is suggesting that the new road may now “open in the spring”. Have your say about HS2‘s impact on Wendover’s future at the Parish Council’s public meeting being held in the Memorial Hall on Friday 24th November at 7pm.

Wendover News Welcomes authors

Wendover News is delighted to welcome two new volunteers to the core team and several new deliverers. Lorna Archer is a keen writer who joins us to produce and edit content, in particular relating to the Ellesborough area and ‘Health and Wellbeing’. Stephen Ellis-Jones is an experienced fiction writer and is currently working on a new historical novel. He will be assisting both as a writer/editor and in the management of the new company.

Social meet-ups for delivery volunteers

Wendover News just wouldn’t work without our delivery volunteers! Some people join for the exercise for an hour or so once a month, some for the social contact and some just because it makes them feel good to help out with a community resource! We would like to introduce some of you to each other, and get to know you better socially. We’re starting monthly social meet-ups at various times and venues, in and around Wendover. Initially, we don’t know what will suit people best, so meet-ups will take place on different days of the week alternating between morning, afternoon or early evening. The first meeting will be in the Red Lion meeting room at 10am, on a date to be decided. Volunteers will receive a personal invitation with the next batch of freshly printed Wendover News. We’re looking forward to meeting you properly, once again! Who do you know who might enjoy joining the delivery team? We are urgently looking for street deliverers for several areas. We also need to recruit a small team of ‘standby’ deliverers, co-ordinators and distributors who can flexibly cover holidays, illnesses and other emergencies among the regular delivery team.

Spooky Night time Flyers, or Ecosystem Superheroes? Bats have a long history of association with spooky folklore and the horror genre and this time of year they can be seen in abundance in Halloween decorated homes. But really these night time mammals are in fact eco-system superheroes! Unfortunately, another night time flyer, the moth, also suffers from a bad reputation, with a significant 74% people having negative feelings towards them, seeing them as cloth-devouring pests.

Reversing the reputation

Despite popular belief only two of the 2,500 species of UK moths cause damage to textiles. Many species are essential components within food chains and are important pollinators. Surprisingly, elsewhere in the world bats are also important pollinators and essential for tequila and for propagating bananas, and cocoa cropsw. UK bats, far from the bloodsucking vampire myths, actually clear our skies of blood-sucking mosquitoes, with some bats consuming up to 3,000 insects a night, including those that are agricultural pests.

Indicator species

Bat and moths are indicator species and unfortunately, their decreasing populations in the UK give a warning sign of wider biodiversity problems and provide information on the health of ecosystems.

We need to help bats and moths

By growing plants that flower early and late in the season you can support insects, and therefore bats. Changing gardening habits by installing a small pond and bat boxes, leaving a section untidy with logs and leaf piles, can help insects, bats and an array of other wildlife. Moths can be supported in your gardens by planting nightscented flora such as honeysuckle. CLAW, through its hedgerow, tree and wild belt planting, has been providing navigational aids Brimstone moth and spots for Photo: Robert Manasse future roosting for bats and shelter and food sources for moths and their caterpillars. “Local butcher Kings Farm Shop and Aylesbury based Double Glazing Direct have also agreed much valued yearly sponsorship deals which offer a great cash injection for the club. This allows us to purchase equipment and maintain our facilities in a way that best supports both junior and senior cricket.

Don Knight writes: “We played our final match of the outdoor season on the last day of September between teams for the Chairman and the Captain. Unfortunately the wrong team won as the Captain’s team prevailed (guess whose team I was on). The match was enjoyed by everyone, with plenty of banter and was followed by a splendid supper. Next day a large gang descended on the Club to put the green to bed and prepare the clubhouse for our indoor season.

“As any club knows, raising funds is an important but not so easy task, so sponsorship deals at any level really help to keep the club alive. If you have an interest in supporting the club by becoming a sponsor and at the same time promoting your own local business, contact Brian Goodwin at wendoverccsponsorship@outlook.com to discuss potential options.“ Jonathan Seabrook writes: “Wendover Cricket Club enjoyed a largely successful season despite some awful weather. In the senior section, the 1st XI in a higher league division came 8th out of 10 whilst the 2nd XI under new captain Danny Nelson had their best season in years, finishing 4th out of 14; the Sunday teams continued to flourish, winning many more than they lost, including the club’s second highest successful run-chase when they chased down 272 at Chesham Bois.

In my last report I mentioned that Wendover used to have a second bowls club called the Orcadians, playing behind the Red Lion. By a strange coincidence someone gave me a pair of bowls that his grandfather used to play with. When I cleaned up the rather fine silver mounts I found that they were presented as a trophy to F Wood of the Orcadian Bowls Club in 1916. Some of us older Wendoverians will remember Frank Wood and the builders’ yard The 2023 senior trophies were awarded to Emile Jansen Van opposite the George. One of the bowls has now been mounted and Rensberg (Batting), Jonathan Seabrook (Bowling & 1st XI Player), will be presented annually as a trophy. A rather nice “full circle.” Thomas Duff (Fielding), Zach Cleary (Young Player), Emile & George Greer (Silver Bail for their 164 run opening partnership), Danny Although we are not playing on the outdoor green so it does not Nelson & Puneet Kapoor (2nd XI Players), Alex Stheeman & Calum affect us, the fox has started digging larger holes, some almost Plews (Sunday Players), Danny & Sara Nelson (David Boardman a foot deep. Other clubs that have had the same problem have Clubman). installed low electric fences. Let’s hope that we don’t have to go down the same route. I can see some of our less active members “The Junior Section catered for large numbers and 4 age groups getting the thrill of a lifetime as they step onto the green!” won their league divisions – the U10 Mosquitos, the U11’s in the ADMCL and the Girls won both their U11 & U12 divisions. Ridgeway National Trail

celebrates 50th anniversary This year is the 50th anniversary of the Ridgeway National Trail, which runs for 140km from Overton Hill near Marlborough to Ivinghoe Beacon. Wendover and its residents have played important parts in the Trail’s history, so it was fitting that the anniversary was celebrated on 29 September by a ceremony on Coombe Hill, with its panoramic views over Ellesborough and Wendover. National Trail officials and guests gathered at the

Coombe Hill Monument for the anniversary. There was a gathering of exhibitions and demonstrations showing the 5,000 year history of the Ridgeway itself as well as activities along the modern trail such as off-road bikes and the work done to Ivinghoe Beacon. World Scouts Jamboree 2023: South Korea In August, most major news outlets had extensive coverage of the international Jamboree in South Korea. The new Wendover Pharmacy is here! It opened on 26 September and has hit the ground running. The opening hours are weekdays 9.00am to 6.30pm and 9.00 to 5.30pm Saturdays, closed on Sundays. The managing partner, Hadi Kanbar, is present at the pharmacy most weekdays and has recently been staying until 10.30pm to catch up with the backlog of pre-prepared prescriptions left by the previous owner, Lloyds. Hadi is a joint partner in the practice, and this is his sole pharmacy. He currently resides in Uxbridge and has plans to move locally. Their intention is to run the fully independent practice in a way that enhances the health care and wellbeing of Wendover residents. Hadi’s motivation is to ‘help others,’ something he has wanted to do since childhood. He has always wanted to be in the healthcare profession. He is the first pharmacist in his family, graduating from Bath University in 2016 and qualifying in 2017, and he is currently studying an extra prescribing course at Warwick University. At present the main focus is to “catch up” with patient prescriptions, and be ahead of the collection of medication with pre-prepared prescriptions. The intention is to keep queuing to a minimum by efficient pre-preparation and being fully organised with the stocks of medication and stock

control. This will improve efficiency and speedy resolution for visiting customers. The practice is already connected to the electronic prescription service from GP surgeries. A big positive appears to be the fact that an independent operation like Wendover Pharmacy is not limited to particular suppliers as the big chain establishments are, so this enables the purchase of medication from a wider spectrum of suppliers. Hopefully, this will help with stock control too. Hadi has plans for non-prescription medication, alternative medicines and non-medical items. The shelves are already full, which is heartening. He plans to stock the Swiss make-up brand Mavala, which is already in train. Additionally, Wendover Pharmacy offers walk-in clinical services for flu vaccinations, blood pressure checks, and various health services, establishing a central hub for health and wellness. With expert advice readily accessible, residents can rely on a trusted partner for their health journey. Overall, the future looks to be in safe hands, and a fully-stocked pharmacy will be a departure from many readers’ experiences in recent years. Just to close with a little secret, Hadi gets married next year, so let’s wish him well and hope he enjoys Wendover and the locality and stays for the long term! Lorna Archer for Wendover News

Wendover Parish Council View from the Clock Tower As the HS2 discussions rumble on, but not the trains, the Parish Council is concerned that the bigger headlines are overshadowing the impacts on our local community. Along with the HS2 Mitigation Action Group we are running a public engagement event on 24th November 2023 at 7pm in the Wendover Memorial Hall. It will be a chance to be informed, be heard and be social!

crowding we have tweaked both! This year it will be on a Saturday, 2 December from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Many of the local shops will be supporting the event with their own events and attractions. The event is being hosted by Bucks Radio and their big cuddly Bucks Bear will be there to greet you all.

The event is designed to inform residents of what is now proposed for Wendover, which will be somewhat different from the original proposals; and in particular to inform on how they are personally affected (eg noise, road closures). Further, we aim to engage in issues where residents can make a positive contribution to the outcomes, in particular looking at the land which will be sold back.

Centre. We will be putting more details about stalls and attractions in next month’s edition of Wendover News. This event will be supported by the Local Produce Market hosting the Ellesborough Silver Band playing a host of festive favourites on Saturday 16 December; then Carols around the Tree with the Chinnor Silver Band on Friday 22 December. Welcome to Wendover – online Wendover High Street is the hub of our village along with local business, markets and events. The Parish Council is currently looking at how we can not only support the High Street, but the many local businesses around the parish. We have some excellent award-winning shops and businesses providing great service, but without local support these will disappear.

The meeting will have a short briefing at the start and then move into more interactive workshop-style breakouts, focusing on the key issues with wine and refreshments available as part of the workshops.

We have started to develop www. welcometowendover.co.uk as a place to go for information about the local area and would welcome any feedback you have. If you are involved in a local business and want to get involved with the Wendover Business Group then please contact the clocktower for more information.
