HomocysteinE: Threat in the Blood In the previous chapter, it was illustrated that risk markers can draw attention to health dangers through their concentration in the blood. In this manner, high ADMA rates are an indication for cardiovascular diseases. Exactly the same holds true for the amino acid, homocysteine.

Risk marker for vascular disorders Homocysteine forms through the breakdown of proteins from the amino acid, methionine. Thereby, homocysteine is, in fact, an endogenous metabolic product, though one that is not desirable for the body, as it is poisonous and can damage the heart and blood vessels by various means! Luckily, homocysteine is only an intermediary product. For healthy people, who are supplied with sufficient vitamin B6, amino acid and vitamin B12, homocysteine is quickly converted into the harmless amino acid, cysteine. If this is not the case, the blood’s homocysteine rate rises (“hyperhomocysteinemia”), as does the risks of seriously consequential circulation disorders, a similar case as with ADMA.

Cholesterol-lowering drug (“Statine”) Recent research results show that the beneficial effect of statine is only seen in patients with high ADMA levels when they are simultaneously supplied with L-Arginin. Misfortune never comes singly ADMA and homocysteine are risk markers for disturbed vascular functions, and both are treatable. For cardiovascular patients, it is a question of treatment priority. With regard to this, examinations determine: •

on one hand, treatment of increased homocysteine concentrations with vitamin B6 & B12 as well as folic acid leads to a massive sinking of test results, into the normal realm, on the other hand, the treatment is not clinically proven to change anything, despite the clear drop of the homocysteine level!

A contradiction? It appears so, but the breakdown of homocysteine via B vitamins and the new formation of ADMA are, in fact, biochemically linked.

The ADMA level rises dramatically when taking B vitamins! This means that the dietary supply of B vitamins only “treats” test results, not the failure of the vascular system itself. In sum: B vitamins increase the problem for the arteriosclerotic clinical picture, in this context.

Sustainable problem solving L-Arginin helps with impaired vascular functions: A clinical study concisely shows that patients with arterial blockage diseases and increased homocysteine concentrations react positively to L-Arginin supplements.
