Why is it that when I nosh or eat a meal late at night, I actually wake up way hungrier the next morning? I see that for instance on yom tov, when I eat a late meal, I sometimes wake up fuller and sometimes starving. Can it be that my body got used to expecting more food?

It's a common and confusing experience: you nosh late at night—or sit down to a full Yom Tov seudah that ends well past your usual dinner time—and instead of waking up fuller the next morning, you're ravenous. Why does this happen?

Shouldn't eating more (and later!) keep you satisfied longer?

Let’s break this down with both practical and scientific insight—focusing especially on the fascinating gut-brain connection.

Your body operates on a 24-hour cycle known as the circadian rhythm, which governs sleep, hormone release, digestion, and even hunger cues. When you eat a large or late meal, especially close to bedtime, it can interfere with this rhythm.

Your digestive system naturally slows down at night in preparation for rest, so that late meal doesn’t get processed as efficiently. Instead of satisfying you, the late-night food can cause blood sugar fluctuations during the night. For example, you may get a temporary spike in blood sugar followed by a dip—which can trigger hunger signals before you even wake up.

Also, your gut and brain are constantly communicating through a network called the gut-brain axis, primarily via the vagus nerve and hormones like ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and leptin (the fullness hormone). When you frequently eat late at night, your body may begin to "learn" this pattern and start anticipating food during those hours—even if you don’t need the extra calories. Over time, your hunger hormones may shift to expect more food in the evening and less in the morning.

But when this rhythm gets disrupted—like on Yom Tov, when meals vary—you might feel thrown off. Sometimes you wake up

full, sometimes hungry, depending on how your body processed the previous night’s meal.

Here are a few specific reasons late-night eating might lead to morning hunger: 1. Blood sugar rebound – A big or carbheavy meal at night can lead to a blood sugar spike, followed by a drop during the night, which can trigger early morning hunger.

2. Poor sleep quality – Eating late can interfere with deep, restful sleep.

Lack of quality sleep increases ghrelin (hunger) and decreases leptin (fullness), making you feel hungrier the next day. Also, eating late and laying down in a sleeping position soon thereafter can lead to heartburns and make you sleep uncomfortably, resulting in you being up more and feeling hungrier.

3. Learned expectation – If your body is used to frequent nighttime noshing, your internal hunger cues may be out of sync with actual energy needs.

You’ve essentially trained your system to expect food at odd hours.

4. Delayed digestion – Late meals can linger in your system overnight, disrupting normal digestive signaling and making hunger cues feel inconsistent or exaggerated.

So yes- in a nutshell, yes—your body can absolutely get used to expecting more food based on previous patterns. And while a late meal might sometimes leave you feeling full the next day, more often than not, it disrupts the complex dance between your gut, brain, and hormones— leaving you hungrier instead.
