RECAP OF CHAPTER 93: Katarina and Teresa are killed in an accident. The Austrian government tells the Jews that they will compensate them for the wrong that was done to them all these years, but they must keep the story to themselves until further notice. Binyamin realizes that this is because some of the government officials were in on the secret all along.
Sol refuses to believe that the Wangels had deceived them; he doesn’t want to leave the place.
The Jews finally leave the Samson Lager camp. They will be brought to a guesthouse, where they will recover for a few days. Bentzy asks his wife to come with his mother and speak to the frightened and traumatized women and girls, and give them chizuk.
An excerpt from the contract signed between the representatives of the residents of Samson Lager and unofficial representatives of the Austrian government:
…All those who have left the camp, of every age, commit to maintaining absolute silence regarding their lives as experienced since the end of the war, or from their birth, until they left the camp grounds.
In addition, each individual who was at the camp for more than a year, but less than ten years, will be compensated with fifty thousand U.S. dollars. Every individual who was in the camp for more than ten years will receive five hundred thousand U.S. dollars.
Being that on the day of the departure from the camp, two civilians were killed, and there was no prosecution in a legal court for this crime, a complaint was received by the Salzburg police. According to what is agreed above, the case will be closed, and the suspects in this matter will not be prosecuted. As noted, this is on condition that the silence regarding Samson Lager is maintained.
Aside for this, those who left the camp will be given Austrian citizenship, which will go into effect without a waiting period.
Anyone who transgresses the secrecy agreement before the expiration date of this contract will be liable, based on his signature of the contract, for heavy fines, as stipulated henceforth…
“They clearly said it’s going to be a lawsuit for huge sums of money,” Rechel said as she and her friend Ruchelle swept the floor of the preschool after the day’s sessions had ended.
The preschool was one of the few elements functioning in a way that was reminiscent of their previous lives, after a number of parents had reached out to Naomi and asked her to continue occupying their children in the mornings here in the guesthouse as well.
The conference hall that had been allocated for the preschool to use was spacious and beautiful. Both the children and their parents had been stunned by the elegant furnishings, and they warmly thanked Mrs. Domb, the proprietor of the place.
“So of course we’ll be quiet, somehow,” Shifra Cohen-Sighet

said.

“And my grandson is one of the only residents in the camp who won’t get anything,” Ruchelle said with a sigh as she arranged the chairs into a circle. “But it doesn’t matter. We wouldn’t have wanted to stay there even one more day to wait for him to get a little older. Even if—” She fell silent, and no one asked if she wanted to say that his mother would have wanted exactly that to happen.
The baby’s mother had hardly been seen since they’d arrived at the guesthouse ten days ago.
“That’s right. We didn’t have too many babies under a year old,” Rechel mused.
“And Herzlich’s baby was already born in Vienna,” Ruchelle said lightly. “I called Sarah. She has a telephone in the hospital! She told me than in twenty-five years, she’ll tell her daughter how wonderful it was to have a child born into freedom…”
“Who is with her there?” Rechel asked.
“Bluma Hanter, and another woman from the frum community in Vienna, that psychologist who’s come here a few times.”
“How is Sarah feeling?”
“Fine, baruch Hashem. A bit confused and out of sorts, but I think she’s managing well. They gave her a private room for herself and the baby, and she told me that she hardly speaks, so the doctors and nurses might think she’s a bit meshugeh, but it’s fine with her that they are not trying to speak to her.”
“And what about Dr. Katzburg?” The women exchanged glances. “Think about what a vital figure she was in the camp… What will be with her now?”
“She probably feels awful, especially that Sarah Herzlich went to the hospital. Who will need her help now, when we have advanced hospitals to serve us?”
“She is spending a lot of time sitting near the lake, reading.” Rechel hesitated. “And at the meals she looks…okay. Not broken or anything like that. Hashem will help her.”
“Like He will help us all.”
“And like He already has helped
us all.” Rechel put down her broom; the room was clean and organized. Maybe she’d go to the kitchen now, to her mother, who was helping with the cooking there. They had asked the Hanters to be allowed to help as much as possible around the place, in order to keep expenses down. The feeling of living on someone else’s account, even for a limited time, is not pleasant. And besides, long days with nothing to do is never beneficial for anyone.
But aside for a bit of sweeping, straightening up, laundry, and helping to supervise the children, what could she do? Sew? She loved to sew and embroider, but they hadn’t taken the ancient machines from the camp with them. Mr. Hanter had said they were antiques, and it was a waste to schlep them over here. When they would receive their compensation, she’d buy a new sewing machine and open a sewing shop of her own.
Shifra Cohen-Sighet, on the other hand, claimed that bli neder, she would not touch a needle or thread for the next twenty years. She could not bring herself to do the thing she had been forced to do for thirty years. That was also reasonable.
So many conversations were taking place here about the murky future ahead of them, and her father and Binyamin related that the same was happening among the men. Each one saw his future differently, and there were those who said one thing at night and another thing the next morning.
As for Binyamin himself, he wasn’t talking about the future at all. In the first few days after they’d come there, Rechel had worried a lot about him. He slept most of the day, hardly spoke, barely ate, and rarely returned her gaze. And he refused to meet the frum psychologist that the Hanters had brought to speak to anyone who wished to talk and open up.
“It’s because of the drastic changes,” her mother had reassured her. “It’s a difficult and complex transition. As much as we know that it’s much better for us here, and even though he’d dreamed very much of this

happening, the acclimation isn’t easy. And don’t forget the unimaginable tension that he’s lived through just before… Let him be.”
And her father had added, “He’ll be fine. Don’t worry, Rechele.”
They had been right. For three days, Binyamin hardly did anything and didn’t even emerge from his room, aside for davening, for which he’d go to the guesthouse’s shul. Every so often, he’d get out of bed, check the work tools that he’d brought with him, and then go to lie down again. His mother had brought his food to his room.
But on the fourth morning, after he came back from Shacharis, he’d sat down to eat the food she’d brought from the dining room and suddenly said, “I think these tools will be a souvenir for me, an interesting souvenir. I’m not sure I’m going to want to continue sewing furs all my life. But we’ll see.” And that was his only remark regarding future plans. He’d eaten his food quickly, bentched, and said that he was going back to the shul because Rav Schartzbrod was waiting for him there.
And from that point on, he’d gone back to being the Binyamin that she knew.
Rechel walked out of the preschool to the lawn, gazing with a smile at the children playing on the colorful wooden playground. They were shouting, jumping and running, and their happiness was so alive, so genuine. She waved from afar to Naomi, who was standing at the side and talking to Dena Hanter, and they both waved back.
All the women liked the refined young woman who had come a short time after they’d arrived at the guesthouse, feeling confused, agitated, and like they were in a dream. Together with her mother-in-law, Dena had accompanied them to their well-appointed rooms, smiled, and softly answered the endless questions they had.
Now she was talking to Naomi, while her two sons played with the other children. Her eyes followed Duvi, who was swinging vigorously on a swing he shared with Dror Elkovitz. They communicated in an amazing babble of languages, and were managing just fine.
“Nebbach!” Duvi’s voice was filled with compassion. “You didn’t have a Chumash seudah?! And you were never the Shabbos tatty?! Oy… Do you want me to make you a Chumash seudah here?”
Hearing him, Dena smiled. “That’s actually an idea,” she said to Naomi. “We have to make things up for your children here. They’ve missed out on so much.”
“We need to make things up for ourselves, too,” Naomi said, without a smile. “We missed out on even more. But we’ll get there, b’ezras Hashem. Now, would you like to come with me to visit a friend?”
“Sure,” Dena replied. She had taken a liking to the younger woman in the dark blue tichel.
They walked across the front balcony. Out of the corner of her eye, Naomi recognized Sol Sherer standing at the far end, leaning on the railing as he gazed out at some random spot, in silence.
“I’ll tell you a bit about this friend,” Naomi said as they reached the second floor and stopped in front of the young Kush couple’s room. “She had lots of vouchers in the camp. She worked very hard to earn them, really exerting herself, and now…” They knocked once, and then again. And once more. A

tinny wail answered from inside, carrying Naomi back to that day when she’d stood with Dror in front of Elky’s house, banging on the door. “Elky!” she called now, like back then. “Elky, can you open the door? Can we come in?”
The door opened. Her friend stood there, pale-faced, holding her little baby. Naomi walked in without being invited to do so. “Dena, this is Elky. Have you met her yet?”
“Yes,” Elky said, and then retreated into the room, to her bed. She pulled the blanket up almost to her eyes and turned to the wall. “You wanted to see me?” she asked from there, and it was unclear if her words were directed at Naomi or at Dena. “You wanted to see the way a person who worked all her life for nothing looks?”
Naomi sat down on the upholstered chair that was near the bed. “First of all, don’t say, ‘all your life.’ You’re not even twenty, Elky. How do our grandmothers say it? You still have your whole life ahead of you.”
“You, Naomi, at least gained something from all your work in the camp. You are well-liked, you are needed, you are significant even now. But me?”
Prerecorded classes
“I also thought that I was insignificant,” Dena whispered. “But I’ve learned that it’s not true. A person can gain from every single person and from every single thing. And we can learn to look differently at things, and to see them in a different light—one that is no less real, and perhaps even more real.” “Gain?” Elky sat up, her voice trembling as the words tumbled out of her mouth. “Don’t talk to me about gains, because I only lost. I ran from the office to the store, and from the store to the laundry room, working my head off, and now I have nothing to show for any of it! Do you understand? And it’s not only that.”
“What else is it?” Naomi asked as she smiled at the baby, whose bright, alert eyes peeked out at her from the blanket. “The investigators who came yesterday told us that all the newspapers that the Wangels gave us, at sporadic times over the years, were faked by Bernard. He tried to conduct a social experiment on us, to see how much he’d be able to change us.” She sat down and looked at Dena. “He was doing a study about how captors are able to influence their captives, even if in theory, there is hatred between them, or something like that—I don’t know exactly. He wrote his whole thesis down, and they found it at the manor house. And I was the only fool who was excited about their offer to get married there, on their estate… They probably had a good laugh at my naiveté!”
“Why do you care about them now?” Dena asked. “They’re all dead already.”
“I care that I was a fool.” Elky’s eyes were smoldering.
“But they didn’t continue doing it,” Naomi said. “Aside for your wedding and the Gefreiter’s birthday party, I don’t think they tried anything similar.”
“True.” Elky fell silent for a moment, and then added, “Maybe because your grandmother got involved regarding the birthday party, and because of her I didn’t participate.” She laughed mirthlessly. “I was so angry at her then for losing the grant…! But now I’m happy I didn’t go. Because of her, at least I don’t feel like a complete and total fool.”

Ingrown toenails are a very common condition that can cause significant discomfort if not addressed early. They occur when the edge or corner of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to irritation, inflammation, and sometimes infection. Although any toe can be affected, the big toe is most commonly involved.
SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS
There are several reasons why ingrown toenails develop. The most frequent cause is improper nail trimming. When toenails are cut too short or the edges are rounded off instead of being left straight across, the skin may fold over the nail edge as it grows, allowing the nail to dig in. Wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow can also contribute, as they place pressure on the sides of the toes and encourage the nails to grow into the skin. Repeated trauma or injury—such as stubbing your toe, dropping something heavy on it, or experiencing continuous friction during sports—can alter the way a nail grows, making it more likely to become ingrown. Some individuals are genetically predisposed to this problem due to naturally curved or wide nails. Poor foot hygiene, excessive moisture, or fungal infections can soften the skin and nail, increasing the risk.
Have a health question you’d like answered in this column? Write to: info@phcmedical.org
I seem to get ingrown toenails every few months, especially on my big toes. I’ve heard different things — some say it’s from cutting nails the wrong way, others say it’s from the way I walk or from tight shoes. What actually causes ingrown toenails, and how can I prevent them?
Additionally, people with certain medical conditions such as diabetes or poor circulation are more prone to developing ingrown toenails and complications from them.
Preventing ingrown toenails often comes down to good nail and foot care habits. Toenails should always be trimmed straight across and not too short. Avoid cutting or rounding the corners, as this encourages the nail to grow into the skin. Wearing well-fitting shoes with a wide toe box can help by reducing pressure on the toes, while tight shoes or high heels should be avoided if possible. Keeping the feet clean and dry is equally important, as it helps maintain healthy skin and prevents infection. If you have difficulty reaching or seeing your toenails, it’s best to have them trimmed by a podiatrist. Protecting your feet from injury during sports or daily activities can also make a big difference.

If you notice any redness, swelling, pain, or drainage around a toenail, it’s important to seek podiatric care early. A podiatrist can relieve discomfort, prevent infection, and, if necessary, remove a small portion of the affected nail to allow proper healing.

Our generation could be the one to repair the breach! This would cause great pleasure to the Tzadikim who were concerned about this topic. Since we are accustomed to this way of dress for so many generations, people assume that it must be allowed. People think that it is L’chatchila. Therefore, we will explain the matter and everyone will realize that it isn’t simple at all!
A great number of Acharonim forbade the wig. There is a Kuntrus Das Yehudis who brings down a list of sixty Poskim who forbade it!! Among them are the Be’er Sheva, Pachad Yitzchak, Shiurei Keneses Hagedolah, Magen Giborim, She’elas Yaveitz, Mor U’Ketzia, Harei Besamim, Maharsha Elfandri, Pnei Yitzchak Abulafia, Mahari Elgazi, Kehilas Yaakov, Mayim Rabim, Yeshuos Yaakov, Chasam Sofer, Birkei Yosef, Atzei Arazim, Divrei Chaim, Tzemach Tzedek on Mishnayos, Barziner Rav, Mahril Diskind, S’dei Chemed, Lev Ha’ivri and many many more.
HARAV YISSACHOR DOV of BELZ ZY’’A, said in his holy words. “A woman that reveals her hair in public loses her Kesuba and ANYONE WHO LEARNS SHULCHAN ARUCH WITH YIRAS SHAMAYIM SEES CLEARLY THAT THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEARING HER OWN HAIR OR HAIR OF A SHEITEL.”
Now the reason for this Mitzvah is because the hair of a woman is Pritzus and can cause men to stumble. (Terumas Hadeshen, siman yud). This is the only reason. So if this is the only reason then this problem is also the same with a wig. Since it’s not just about covering her head only. But about not being Machshil the men, since the hair of a woman is her beauty. Therefore, the POSKIM say, that anything that looks like hair is the same thing, since it can be Machshil the men. What’s the difference whose hair it is? She can also be Oiver on the Issur of רוע ינפל. “Do not put a stumbling block before the blind.” Although all the Matirim were all relying on the Shiltei Hagibborim
it has come to light in recent years that: 1: nowhere are the words “םיברה תושרב” (in the public domain) written and mentioned 2: that the Shiltei Hagibborim never intended for a wig to be worn uncovered in the public domain.
Women who come from Kehilos whose Poskim initially forbade it, certainly have no Heter whatsoever.
Nowadays, when the men are very Makpid to wear a Shtreimel and a Bekeshe; which isn’t a Halacha, shouldn’t the women too return to their original way of dress and cover their hair with a Tichel?
To understand why the great Gedolim from the past generation didn’t go publicly all out against this is very simple. Many women weren’t covering their hair at all. So they finally got these women to at least use a Sheitel. Therefore, they couldn’t speak out about the prohibition to use Sheitels. These Rabbanim’s intention were not to allow it but that the situation of women not covering their hair shouldn’t get worse. Anyone who has Yiras Shamayim, Ehrliche Yidden, understands what they should do and not take a Heter from the fact that the Gedolim didn’t protest. B”H in our generation thousands of Talmidos have been taught in the ways of Chassidus and have been brought up in homes of Chassidus and do everything in accordance with Chassidus. Therefore, we must work on this as well. The wig, although it was a bandaid in the past, has proven to be a Churban for the Yirei Hashem, since otherwise they would have worn Tichels like before. There are many that want to wear one but now are worried to be the only one. The Eitzah is then to gather in groups and then we will then accomplish more and more.

RECAP: Rivky gets into trouble at orientation.
Malky twisted her rings around and around on her fingers. She knew it was not a good habit to play with them, as they could get lost, but she couldn’t help herself. She was as tense as a student waiting to be admonished by the principal for a wrongdoing, except she had done nothing wrong. It was Rivky who had misbehaved, not her! She was still unsure what exactly Rivky had done that warranted her being called in for a meeting on the second day of school, but you never knew with Rivky.
“You can go in now,” the secretary looked up and motioned to Malky. Malky cautiously approached the semi-closed office door and squinted inside. Then she gave a light knock, pushed it open, and entered.
Mrs. Weissblum, the principal, and Mrs. Fried, the assistant principal, were seated behind the desk, and Morah Cohen occupied one of the chairs across from them, leaving one seat open for Malky. She eased herself into it carefully, hoping it would not squeak.
“Good morning,” Mrs. Weissblum began, nodding at her. “We called you here today to discuss Rivky. Rivky
is an adorable girl…but we seem to be running into some issues.”
“Mmhmm,” was the only response Malky could conjure.
Mrs. Fried continued, “Therefore, we would like you to get Rivky professionally evaluated. We highly recommend Dr. Susan Kim, a world-renowned doctor located in Manhattan. Let us know if you need any help getting an appointment in a timely manner.”
“Do you have anything to add, Morah Cohen?” Mrs. Weissblum asked.
“Rivky is such a yummy, delicious girl,” Morah Cohen enthused. “It would be a shame for her to be hindered by misbehavior and not being able to sit still or follow instructions. That’s why I think it would be best for everyone if she gets the help she needs.”
Malky’s heart was racing and her ears were thrumming. Get Rivky evaluated? Rivky had issues? But she was just a child! It was normal for kids to misbehave sometimes, wasn’t it?
Rivky was much harder to handle than most girls her

age, Malky admitted to herself. But still, did that mean she had such severe issues? Maybe she just needed a bit more time to grow up.
In her heart of hearts, when being truly honest with herself, Malky recognized that Rivky did need professional intervention to help her succeed. But it was hard to acknowledge that there was something wrong with her precious daughter.
With effort, Malky pulled herself back to the present and tried to focus, then abruptly realized that everyone seemed to be waiting for her to say something.
“I-I’ll try to get an appointment,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.
All three staff members nodded. “Perfect. I’ll follow up with you next week as to where you are holding,” Mrs. Fried said.
Zeesy closed her eyes in contentment, breathed in deeply, then released and popped her eyes back open, observing the scene. Shulem and Malky were seated at the table, biting into the warm fluffy challah, along with Rivky and Ruchie, and little Leiby was banging a spoon on his highchair. Spooning some tomato dip onto her plate, Zeesy noticed that Leiby had dropped his spoon and bent down to retrieve it. When she resurfaced, one spot at the table was empty.
“Where’s Rivky?” she wondered aloud, then gasped. Rivky was standing in front of the challah board, holding the large challah knife and attempting to cut herself a piece. Shulem and Malky both lunged for Rivky. Malky grabbed Rivky and held her in place while Shulem wrestled the knife out of Rivky’s stubborn grip.
Quickly slicing a few more pieces with his regular knife, Shulem placed them in middle of the table and announced, “Whoever wants more challah can take from here. There is plenty for everyone.”
With a sniffle, Ruchie took a new slice, just in time, as Rivky leaned over and grabbed all the rest, plunking them all onto her plate.
Shulem launched into a short dvar Torah on the parsha while everyone busied themselves with their challah.
By the time Zeesy was up to serving the soup, Rivky was running wildly around the dining room, and Zeesy was afraid to carry in the piping hot bowls.
But it was hard to acknowledge that there was something wrong with her precious daughter.
“I was just getting another piece,” Rivky shrieked, her screeches quickly giving way to wails when the knife was finally confiscated and removed to a high shelf. “I’m hungry! I want more challah!”
“If you want more challah, you can ask me or Zeidy for another piece. You CANNOT use the knife yourself.”
Shulem’s voice was low and calm, in sharp contrast to Rivky’s screams. Rivky wriggled out of Malky’s grasp, ran around the table, and snatched Ruchie’s piece of challah off her plate, prompting Ruchie to burst into tears.
“Rivky, why don’t you go find a toy to play with from the toy closet,” Zeesy suggested. Rivky did not need a second invitation – she was bounding down the hall before Zeesy even finished her sentence. Zeesy winced at the clattering and clanging of buckets of toys being emptied out. At least it would keep Rivky busy for a while.
“So how are the kids settling in to school again?”
“Baruch Hashem,” Malky responded, though her smile seemed somewhat forced. “Ruchie is doing amazing, she has Morah Miri, she’s sooo good. Rivky had her also, remember?” She reached over and stroked Ruchie’s cheek. “Ruchie is such a good girl, she always listens to what the Morah says, right?” Ruchie beamed at the positive attention heaped on her.
“Wow! I’m so proud of you, Ruchie. You—” Zeesy was interrupted by a loud crash. Shulem and Malky both jumped up and ran to investigate the source of the noise. When they reappeared, Shulem had a grim look on his face and was gripping Rivky with both hands.
“Explain to me again, Rivky, why you thought it would be a good idea to jump off the top bunk bed?”
Rivky looked up at him with her huge round eyes. “I wanted to fly like a bird.”

“Do you realize you could have gotten very badly hurt, chas v’shalom? If those blankets and pillows hadn’t been spread out all over the floor – I’m not even sure why they were there, but it’s a good thing they were, they cushioned your fall. I don’t want to think about

what could have happened if they wouldn’t have been there. It’s very dangerous, Rivky. I don’t want you ever, ever doing something like that again.”

Sparks of defiance shot out of Rivky’s eyes. “I was just trying to fly like a bird. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and YOU’RE THE MEANEST TATTY IN THE WORLD!”
“Rivky!” Malky tried to sound strict, but instead she sounded exasperated, like she was at the end of her rope. “We don’t talk that way to a Tatty.”
“Well, it’s true,” Rivky countered.
Shulem and Malky exchanged glances, Malky shrugging her shoulders as if to say, I have no idea what to do with her. They both seemed at a loss.

Zeesy hurried to serve the next course, hoping it would distract everyone. The men started singing, the tension diffused somewhat, and the meal proceeded with everyone pretending nothing had happened.
A welcome breeze wafted in through the window, a sign that the scorching, stifling summer was coming to a close and fall was beginning. Zeesy flicked imaginary dust off her immaculate top. She had chosen her most youthful outfit, and hoped it would give off a young, trendy impression. She left the house with ample time to spare, not daring to come late to the first interview she had gotten after hours of desperate searching. At precisely ten-thirty, she strode through the door at Perfect Vision and walked right over to the counter.
“I’m here for an interview,” she said, flashing a quick smile, hoping her shakiness would stay hidden.
The saleslady motioned her over to a back door.
“The supervisor is in there, she is waiting for you.”
After making some small talk and answering a few questions about her life, where she had worked previously, and what type of worker she was, the supervisor turned to her with an apologetic smile.
“It was really nice meeting you, Mrs. Hartman. I don’t think you would be a good fit for what we are looking for right now, but I wish you much hatzlacha going forward.”

What’s Hiding Beneath Your Teen’s “I Don’t Care”
You’ve cried about it. You’ve davened for it. You’ve watched your teen withdraw, lose interest, and push away every bit of help you offer.
For a while, all you could see was the laziness — the apathy, the resistance, the excuses. But then, something shifts.
Maybe it’s a quiet moment — a glimpse of sadness behind their eyes.
Maybe it’s the way they crumble over something small, or how they get defensive at the slightest question. Something in you senses it:
This isn’t about not caring. It’s about hurting.

Laziness is Just the Mask
Teens don’t walk around saying, “I feel lost and insecure.”
They say, “School’s stupid.”
They say, “It doesn’t matter.”
They shrug, roll their eyes, build walls of indifference — because it’s safer than admitting, “I can’t do this.”
Underneath that wall is pain — the pain of not feeling enough, of falling behind, of not knowing how to fix it.
And when pain goes unspoken, it turns into avoidance. Avoidance looks a lot like laziness.
All Teens Want to Be Good
Every teen wants to succeed.
Every teen wants to make you proud.
No teen wakes up thinking, “How can I disappoint my parents today?”
If they’re checked out, if they’re making choices that don’t make sense, something inside is stuck. It might be fear.
It might be shame.
It might be the belief that no matter what they do, it will never be enough.
Even the smallest task can feel impossible when that’s happening inside.
Seeing it for What it is
When you see past the attitude — past the eye rolls and resistance — you begin to soften.
You stop seeing a defiant teen and start seeing a discouraged one.
You stop feeling like you’re in a power struggle and start realizing you’re standing beside someone quietly drowning.
Most teens who look unmotivated aren’t giving up on school…
They’re giving up on themselves
The Hidden Story
Your teen might not have the words for it, but inside, they’re fighting battles you can’t see.
They’re navigating pressure, comparison, identity, belonging — all while learning how to manage their emotions.
They might be thinking:
“Everyone else seems fine — what’s wrong with me?”
“I’ll never be able to do this.”
“Why bother trying if I’ll just disappoint everyone?”
Instead, they roll their eyes and turn up the music. It’s easier to look like they don’t care than to risk looking broken.
Seeing the Pain Explains it
Recognizing the pain doesn’t excuse it — it explains it.
They still want to be okay.
They still want to succeed.
They still want to feel proud of themselves.
They just don’t know how to get there right now.
And that knowing — that glimpse beneath the surface — gives you strength to keep believing in them.
They don’t need perfect words or a plan.
They need your steady belief.
Underneath all the resistance, your teen is still in there — the bright, curious, hopeful one you remember.
They’re waiting for the love and safety that will help them come back to life.

It’s completely understandable to feel disappointed or frustrated. But it’s important to know that stress itself can stall weight loss. When your body produces excess cortisol, it signals the body to store fat — particularly around the midsection. Constant worry about the scale can actually create the very problem you’re trying to fix. Being calm, resting, and trusting that your body knows what to do helps reduce cortisol and allows your
Let your body heal. Think of the first 12 weeks as your body’s recovery window — not a time for dieting. Healing is progress. Focus on nourishment, not restriction. Eat balanced, whole foods that stabilize your energy and support your milk supply. Prioritize rest and hydration. Fatigue mimics hunger, and dehydration can increase cravings.
Stay patient and kind to yourself. Your body deserves time to restore balance.
When you feel emotionally ready, that’s when it’s appropriate to think about structured weight loss. You can’t begin that process successfully until you feel strong, stable, and in control.
Of course, this doesn’t mean eating mindlessly or ignoring your body’s needs. It means honoring where you are — fueling yourself well, resting when possible,

Tender, flavor-packed meat with colorful peppers and a hint of lime—easy to prep ahead and perfect for a quick dinner. Tip: marinate the steak in the morning for extra flavor by dinnertime.
NOTE: Skirt steak tastes best at medium-rare. If that’s not to your taste, consider using a different cut of meat or switch it up for chicken instead.
Ingredients
1–1½ pounds skirt steak (or 6-8 chicken cutlets, cut into strips)
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 cloves garlic, crushed
½ teaspoon cumin
2 teaspoons paprika
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano or parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 orange bell pepper, sliced
1 jalapeno or chili pepper, sliced- optional for added heat
½ red onion, sliced Lime wedges, for serving Fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish Tortilla chips or warm tortillas, for serving
Directions
1. In a large zip-top bag or shallow bowl, combine 1 tablespoon olive oil, lime juice, crushed garlic, cumin, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, oregano or parsley, and salt.
2. Add the steak (or chicken strips) directly to the bag or bowl and toss to coat well. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 5 hours.
3. When ready to cook, remove meat or chicken from the refrigerator and bring to room temperature.
4. Heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced peppers and onion. Season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook for about 3–4 minutes until tender-crisp. Remove and set aside.
5. Increase heat to high. Remove the steak or chicken strips from the marinade and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, depending on thickness and desired doneness. Remove from heat.
6. If doing steak, let the meat rest for 10 minutes, then slice very thinly against the grain.
7. Return the sliced steak or chicken to the skillet. Add the cooked vegetables and toss to combine. Cook on low medium heat for about 1-2 minutes until the flavors have melded.
8. Serve the pepper & meat mixture warm with lime wedges, guacamole, cilantro, and tortilla chips, warm tortillas, or taco cups.
