RECAP OF CHAPTER 19: Elky’s wedding is celebrated like a fancy ball, at the manor-house. But following Rav Schwartzbrod’s instructions that she should listen to her brother, who is extremely suspicious and uncomfortable about the Germans’ generous offer to them, Naomi reluctantly decides not to have her wedding there but rather to celebrate it the old way.

Dena misses the shtender her sisters had bought for her, which had gotten left behind in Israel. She decides to buy one in Vienna for Duvi to learn with.

CHAPTER TWENTY

Katy, the assistant, clapped her hands excitedly when the girls finished singing. “Beautiful!” she cried. “An outing with the sun, wind, and songs… What could be better? I don’t even understand the Yiddish words, but oh, it’s still all so beautiful, Naomi!”

“That’s right.” Naomi smiled at Katy and her young students and put the song sheet into the small briefcase that Aunt Chani, her future mother-in-law, had given her. “Girls, you really sang our theme song beautifully. Now you can go and play in the fields, but don’t go too far, and don’t get anywhere near the factory!”

“Can we go see the rabbits?” Zuska Neiman jumped up and down. “I love feeding them!”

Naomi shook her head. “It’s not a good idea. The older children are there now.”

“And besides, it’s so sad to see them,” ten-year-old Surele chimed in. “Because in another few days or weeks, they’ll be killing them so they can make coats and all kinds of other things from their fur.”

“But Hashem gave the animals to people, to us!” Zuska argued. “So that we can use them. That’s why He created animals!”

“What is ‘us’?” Surele asked. “It’s the Germans who use them; it’s not even us.”

“But without the fur factory…” Zuska looked at the stone building that rose up on the hillside to their right, rectangular and ominous.

“Without the fur factory, our families wouldn’t have what to do here. And if we wouldn’t have what to do here, then…”

“Don’t talk about it!” Surele clapped her hands over her ears. “Enough!”

“Fine. But the rabbits are cute,” Zuska insisted.

Naomi looked at Zuska, one of the Reform girls who, surprisingly, had registered for her group. She had assumed that Zuska’s parents would send her to the group taught by Rivku Orenchik, Mila’s cousin, who had taken over after Mila had left the preschool.

“Jews are compassionate,” Naomi explained quietly. “It’s true that

we are allowed to use animal fur, but we must not make the animals suffer unnecessarily. On the other hand, the real compassion is better kept for the people around us, to treat them nicely and to be friendly…to be ‘loyal friends,’ like in the song.”

“Like me and Surele?” her student asked. “Fine. So we won’t go down to the hutches. We’ll just stay here, in the area.”

“Excellent.” Naomi flashed her a smile and sat down on the nearest rock. After a moment, though, she jumped up; she’d noticed a figure in uniform coming up the path and nearing the area where they were having their outing. What was Teresa looking for here?

The figure of the young German grew closer and larger, until she reached the rock on which Naomi had been sitting.

“You have a cute group here,” Teresa remarked as she sat down on the rock with a sigh. “Ugh, what a hill.”

“Indeed, Gefreiter,” Naomi whispered.

“Did I take your place?”

Naomi blinked. “No, it’s fine.”

“I saw how you got up when I came closer. Sit down, that wasn’t nice of me.” She stood up. She stood up!

Naomi shook her head. “No, no, the Gefreiter can sit, it’s fine. I prefer to stand when the children are wandering around, so I can keep track of them better.”

“What a devoted teacher!” Teresa complimented her with a smile, and sat back down.

“She’s both a kindergarten teacher and a schoolteacher!” Katy interjected from the side. “Heh heh, that’s amazing, isn’t it?”

Teresa glanced at her for a moment, murmured something in agreement, and then turned her gaze back to Naomi. “I haven’t told you congratulations yet,” she remarked suddenly, “and you got engaged a long time ago—last year!”

“Thank you.” Naomi smiled politely. “Thanks very much.”

“When did you get engaged?”

“Eleven months ago.”

“And when is the wedding?”

“In ten days.”

Her mother had already explained to Katarina that Naomi and her chassan were the modest, quiet type, and they preferred a small wedding. When the Hauptmann had informed her that because of the risk of a wedding outside if it was not on the estate, only twenty people would be allowed to attend, Mamme had somberly affirmed that the young couple would be fine with that. Was it possible that the powers-that-be in the estate didn’t believe the story and had sent Teresa to nose around and find out the real reason for their refusal?

The truth was, there was no other clear reason. As she’d told Binyamin lightly the night before, “All those who participated in Elky’s wedding are still alive, you know.”

“They should stay alive and well until one hundred and twenty,” he’d replied heavily.

She scanned the area, as if searching for something else to talk about, and Naomi suddenly sensed something foul in the air.

“Wow, so it’s really close! And you are so young, just seventeen!

Never had any of the young German women tried to speak to her in friendly conversation. And in the eleven months that had passed since her engagement, they had met a number of times, and Teresa had never made the effort to wish her “congratulations” at any time. What was going on now? Some kind of undercover investigation into why Naomi didn’t want to celebrate her wedding at the manor house?

“Amen. But does that mean you made a mistake? And that I should change my decision?”

“No. I’m happy nothing happened to them, baruch Hashem, but it still doesn’t say that the reason the Germans made their offer makes sense. Because it doesn’t, Naomi. And it’s always worth being cautious. You can never know when the truth will suddenly come to light, and then you’ll be happy that you listened to me.”

“And if we find out that you did end up making a mistake with this whole thing?”

“Then I apologize already now. You can change your mind about the wedding’s venue, of course, if you want to.”

She didn’t want to.

And now Teresa was coming here and trying, very artificially, to open a conversation with her. If Naomi wouldn’t have been so nervous, she would be snickering with scorn at Teresa’s effort.

“So you’re getting married in ten days,” she was saying. “And you don’t want the hall we offered.”

Here it was coming. “No, Gefreiter. I prefer a smaller, simple wedding.”

“Will you allow me to attend it? After seeing one Jewish wedding up close, I’m curious to see another one.”

“Sure,” Naomi said hastily, her brain pounding painfully. “The Gefreiter is invited to wherever she’d like to come.”

“Excellent. And don’t count me among the twenty people; it’s fine, I’m allowed to join beyond the quota.” She smiled coolly, and Naomi’s brain nearly froze. She didn’t know what to think, and certainly not what to say. With herculean effort, she smiled at Teresa, who returned a polite smile and rose from the large rock.

With a polite Viennese smile, the receptionist welcomed Dena. “Mr. Hanter is in the office, in an important meeting,” she said. “But we made up for…” Dena began, and then regretted saying

anything. Her appointment at the dentist was in over an hour. The fact that she was terrified of having dental treatment in a strange clinic was not the receptionist’s fault.

“I believe the meeting will be over in a few minutes,” the young woman said. She looked to be about Dena’s age. “It really has been going on longer than planned. You can take a seat in the meantime, if you want. There’s a little kitchenette on the right over there, if you’d like to make yourself a hot drink.”

“No thanks,” Dena murmured. She sat down on one of the dark red chairs lined up near the wall. This was the first time she was visiting the offices. What was this color? Were they trying to match the chairs to the paprika, their flagship spice?

She sat for a few minutes, looking at the walls, the floor, the ceiling with its moldings and designs. The receptionist was conducting some lively phone calls, though Dena didn’t understand even half of what she was saying. Finally, bored, she got up and went to the kitchenette. Not that she needed a cup of coffee or tea, but it would give her something to do.

She took a cup, put in a teaspoon of instant tea and a bit of sugar, and was about to pour in the boiling water when she heard a throat clearing behind her.

“Tell me,” the receptionist said to her in Yiddish, “do you understand anything about graphics?”

“Me?” Dena laughed sheepishly. “No, not exactly.”

“But I’m sure you know your colors and when one color looks good on something or

They,” she pointed with her chin toward the inner room, “cannot be disturbed right now.” She didn’t wait for an answer, leaving the doorway to the kitchenette and striding back to her desk. Dena followed obediently.

“Here.” She picked up a glossy colored paper from the printer. “What do you say? Aren’t the orange and the green just dreadful?”

“It’s…” Dena studied it. “It’s interesting.” She fished for something else to say. “Maybe the green is a bit too strong.”

“Strong? It’s faded! But my question is if it has any connection to the other shades she planted here!”

“Maybe,” Dena said apologetically. “Like I said, I don’t really get these things.” She studied the shape of the letters, their position on the page, without understanding a word of what the paper said.

“Well, it’s alright if you don’t understand graphic design,” the receptionist said, looking less official and cold than she had seemed twenty minutes earlier. “Your mother-inlaw adores you anyway, based on what I’ve heard on her visits here…”

“But something here is very strange!” Dena was too focused to notice the compliment she had just gotten. She handed the glossy page back to the secretary. “Very strange. Didn’t you notice this?”

LEMONY GRILLED CHICKEN

I absolutely love a good piece of grilled chicken. It’s the perfect base for any healthy dinner plate. This grilled chicken has a beautiful flavor that’s just perfect for a warm spring evening.

Ingredients:

2 lb light chicken cutlets

1/4 cup olive oil

2 frozen garlic cubes

1 frozen basil cube

1/8 cup lemon juice

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Combine olive oil, garlic, basil, lemon juice, salt and pepper in a bowl.

2. Add chicken cutlets. Marinate for 15 minutes.

3. Heat a grill pan over medium high heat. Grill for 5 minutes on each side, or until done. (I used an outdoor grill, kept it closed).

CRISPY QUINOA SPRING SALAD

This salad has all the crunch and freshness you want from a salad. The crispy quinoa is a great additional and so good to snack on as well!

Ingredients:

2 lemony chicken cutlets, cut into strips

1 cup cooked quinoa

1 bag lettuce

4 radishes, thinly sliced

1 avocado, sliced

Handful of sugar snap peas, cut into bite sized pieces

1 stalk scallions, chopped

Lemon Dressing Ingredients:

4 Tbsp lemon juice

4 Tbsp olive oil

2 Tbsp honey

2 frozen garlic cubes

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°.

2. On a sheet pan, spread quinoa and drizzle some oil over it.

3. Bake for 15 minutes. Mix and bake for additional 5-minute intervals, until crispy. (You don’t want to burn it)

4. In a small container, combine all dressing ingredients.

5. In a large bowl, combine lettuce, radishes, avocado, snap peas, scallions, grilled chicken and crispy quinoa. Dress salad, mix to combine.

KIDS CALLED NERDS: CAN THEY SUCCEED SOCIALLY?

Picture a bunch of 12-year old boys at recess playing basketball. Daniel, a boy who has trouble making friends, attempts to join the game. His overtures are ignored or rejected. After some pestering and sulking, Daniel suddenly intrudes on the game, seizing the ball and dribbling it away. Classmates from both teams protest loudly and rush after Daniel to retrieve the ball.

One of his classmates grabs the ball from Daniel while another shoves Daniel roughly to the side, yelling “Get lost, nerd!” Daniel grabs a clod of dirt from the ground and hurls it into the boy’s face.

In moments, the basketball game disintegrates into an exciting new free-for-all: teaching Daniel a lesson. Daniel soon has seven or eight boys chasing him and it takes two teachers to break up the fist fight when they finally catch him.

Daniel has managed to become the focus of the attention he craves from his classmates, but his intrusion on the game and his devil-may-care bravado have only isolated him further. With bruises, tears and the pain of being further ostracized the only “fruits of war,” Daniel’s social problems have clearly worsened.

The next time the boys choose teams for basketball, they make a point of not including Daniel. Even worse, one boy singles him out for ridicule, announcing loudly, “Daniel can’t play. He’s a big fat nerd!” The others laugh and turn away.

Thus, the cycle of exclusion punctuated by the child’s attempts to work his way into the group which triggers further rejection, continues. Is there hope for children like Daniel who are perpetually “on the outs” with their peers? How does this bleak

situation begin in the first place? Why are some children unable to find a friend in the class, unable to integrate and blend in with the group?

Social Awareness By Osmosis

The lack of peer acceptance is one of the most painful problems young children can experience in school, advises Dr. Betty Osman, a noted expert and author on educational topics. “Computers and calculators can help children with writing, reading skills and math, but there is no similar technology to help them handle a lonely recess at school, or afternoons and weekends at home when they cannot get together with a friend.”

Some children seem born to make life easy for parents — and for themselves as well. They appear to develop social awareness early in life, by example and “osmosis.” As they grow, they display good “people skills” — a sense of humor, a positive attitude toward life and empathy for others--qualities guaranteed to win friends.

In many children, however, this internal process does not operate well.

Research has indicated that children with learning disabilities often fail to pick up social skills and experience more difficulty making and keeping friends than young people without these problems. Yet, quite often children who academically are well within the mainstream, suffer from these disadvantages as well.

What is the nature of these social disabilities and what, if anything, can parents do to help their children and adolescents “fit in”?

Social Disabilities Occur on Three Levels:

Education experts identify three

different areas of learning and behavior where these deficits are most manifest.

• The first is a cognitive deficit, lack of knowledge of how to conduct oneself in a given social situation — how to observe the unwritten rules of social decorum. Intervention on this level consists of teaching the requisite skill in much the same way as a new math concept or social studies lesson might be presented.

• The second might be referred to as a “performance deficit” and shows up in children or adolescents who understand appropriate behavior and what is expected, but their own needs interfere with their intellectual comprehension. Some children who understand the concept of fair play and know they should show good sportsmanship, simply can’t bear to lose, so they break the rules to make sure that they win. These children have the skills but are unable to apply them.

• Still others with social difficulties know how to act and can suppress their needs appropriately, but they lack the ability to evaluate their own or others’ behavior. They don’t understand the effect of their actions and, cannot anticipate social consequences.

Children with these issues generally perceive themselves as the victims of others’ mistreatment. They take little responsibility for their actions, blaming others or simply “bad luck” for events in their lives.

To help young people with social problems, it is important to understand on what level they are having trouble. Communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, have deep social implications. Children who don’t “read” body language, facial

expressions and vocal inflections well are likely to miss important signals in life that are apparent to others.

Social Acceptance Is Crucial

Many educational experts and psychologists have come to view the social domain as important as academic instruction. They say that parents cannot afford to ignore their children’s social difficulties. The consequences are too great for the child and the family.

To help children develop better social skills, parents might consider practicing certain strategies and tips at home, or hiring someone trained in social skills coaching to teach some basic strategies, including:

• How to initiate, maintain, and end a conversation

• The art of negotiation — how to compromise to get what you want in appropriate ways, without stepping on others’ feelings or rights

• How to be assertive without being aggressive

• How to apologize

• How to give and receive compliments

• Practice how to accept constructive criticism

• How to respond to teasing and bullying by peers

Bullying

Bullying, a distinct problem in many classrooms, deserves separate treatment in another article. But since it is often the socially inept child who is the victim of bullying, a few words about this widespread problem are in order here.

Bullying is the deliberate attempt to intimidate, hurt or frighten someone with words or actions. It can include teasing, name-calling, preventing others from going where they want to or doing what they want to, pushing or hitting, and other forms of physical or verbal abuse.

Children who bully others do it for a variety of reasons. It makes them feel more important and more popular. It makes them forget their

own shortcomings and inadequacies. They do it to make themselves feel tough or in control. They do it to get a laugh.

Often bullies will choose children who seem easy to hurt. They may pick on children who look or are different in some way; struggle with schoolwork; are not good at sports; lack social confidence; are anxious or unable to hold their own because of being smaller, weaker or younger.

Look Out For Telltale Signs

Children who are being bullied may not always tell adults. They may be afraid or ashamed. They may worry that they will be blamed for causing it. Some signs of being bullied may include:

• Not wanting to go to school and finding excuses to stay at home.

• Wanting to go to school a different way to avoid the children who are bullying them.

• Being very tense, tearful and unhappy after school.

• Talking about hating school or not having any friends.

• Unexplained bruises or scratches

• Refusing to tell a parent what happens at school.

The child may show other signs of unhappiness, such as problems with sleeping or lack of appetite, or generalized anxiety. If bullying is allowed to continue, it can have a very bad effect on the victimized child.

Parents Can Help

Parents of a child who is being bullied are often at a loss as to how to deal with the problem. Often the child’s teachers will say that they don't allow teasing and bullying in their class and that it simply does not happen.

The fact that it is indeed happening— though not under their noses—does not seem to register. Most kids are smart enough to know not to pick on kids when the teacher or any adult is in close proximity, but for the perceptive teacher, signs of it are not hard to pick up.

Be Pro-Active

There are several things parents can do to help. These include:

• Listen to your child and take her feelings and fears seriously.

• Try not to take everything into your own hands, as this is likely to make your child feel less in control.

• Probe carefully to determine if your child is doing something to provoke the bullying. A socially inept child may not be aware of how he is antagonizing or provoking others.

• If the bullying is verbal teasing, you may be able to help your child learn to ignore it, and not to give satisfaction to the teaser by getting angry or tearful. Practice responses that discourage teasing. (for example, countering a teasing remark with a joke; by appearing to agree with teaser; by walking away with dignity).

• If the bullying happens at school, make a list of incidents in which your child was bullied. Be firm and factual, not emotional. Be prepared to name the children who bully.

• Talk to the teacher and the school principal about the school's way of dealing with bullying and what steps they take to prevent it and protect children from it. Keep in contact until the problem is sorted out.

• Don’t be intimidated. The school has an obligation to maintain a healthy, safe environment for each and every child.

Children who are the butt of ridicule, teasing or bullying, and children who incur social difficulties on any level require special understanding as well as teacher/parent intervention. Although each young person is unique, all have the same needs — acceptance, approval, a safe environment and a sense of belonging.

In today’s world, experts agree, teachers must educate the whole child, paying careful attention to the child’s social skills and social adjustment as much as to his academic progress. We must go beyond the three R’s to include the fourth one: relationships. This is the key to a child’s happiness, emotional growth and overall productivity.

Recap: Mrs. Gordon tells Bruchi about the bail hearing being pushed off, then spends some time speaking to her and reassuring Bruchi about the situation. Then, Devorah calls Mrs. Gordon with the news that her boss would like to meet Mrs. Gordon, and that Devorah wants to set up a meeting. Mrs. Gordon is unsure if she still wants the job.

Casey is still surprised that he’s actually been arrested, spending his time planning revenge against Poker. When breakfast is delivered, he wonders if something is wrong with it since his cellmate won’t eat it. He strikes up a conversation with his cellmate, Shmiel Kleinberg.

CHAPTER 31

“Something wrong with the food?” Casey asked, his eyes boring into Mr. Kleinberg.

“No,” Mr. Kleinberg said.

“Why don’t you eat it, then?”

“Uh, I’m Jewish, so – “

“Ah, kosher, I forgot.”

Casey studied the tray while Shmiel looked at his cellmate in astonishment. What did this guy, who’d been cursing to himself for most of the time he’d been in the cell, know about kosher?

“Nothing unkosher about bread, is there?” Casey asked.

“No, but how do you know?!”

“Hey, I went to day school, back in the day,” Casey said, less aggressively than before as the softer side of him that appeared whenever he remembered his childhood took over.

“You’re Jewish?” Mr. Kleinberg asked. In the crazy place his world had become, he figured that finding out his cellmate was Jewish was also possible.

“Yeah, I’m Jewish, wish I weren’t,” Casey sneered, remembering that this was how it had all started. Reminding Poker about day school – that was what had gotten him arrested!

Mr. Kleinberg looked at his towering, powerfully built cellmate and decided not to say anything else. He didn’t know why the guy was in jail, but it didn’t sound like it was because he’d bought a malicious AI program or anything of that sort. It was more likely he’d been involved in something slightly shadier than that.

Could it really be that he was Jewish?

“So what’s wrong with the bread?” Casey asked again. “Nothing’s wrong, it’s kosher,” Mr. Kleinberg assured him.

“Why don’t you eat, then?”

Because he couldn’t bear to eat the fare the guards brought every day. He’d already noticed that he’d lost weight over the few days he’d been in jail, but despite the hunger pains in his stomach, he couldn’t bring himself to eat.

Without meaning to, his mind cast back to the cheesecake spread his wife would prepare for him every morning on the table in their cozy breakfast nook. He’d eat a thick slab of some creamy confection, wash it down with coffee from their trusty Keurig, and bid his wife and daughters goodbye as he rushed out to work.

The memory of the scene was so wrenching that Mr. Kleinberg grimaced. It was like the tide, the waves of pain at having done this to himself washing up powerfully inside him, then receding while he tried to push away the thoughts. Unbidden, those thoughts would come back again, and another wave of nearly physical misery would wash over him.

Casey scrutinized Mr. Kleinberg’s face carefully when Mr. Kleinberg didn’t respond, then looked back at the

tray. He looked back at Mr. Kleinberg, then started to eat.

The food on both trays was gone in minutes.

“What’d you do?” Casey asked when he was finished eating.

“Huh?”

“What’d you do?” Casey repeated. When Mr. Kleinberg still didn’t seem to comprehend, he said forcefully, “Why here?”

“Well, I was arrested in Manhattan,” Mr. Kleinberg said. “I wasn’t transferred since.”

“You’re a real suitman, huh,” Casey muttered. Then he walked over to the metal bed that held his mattress and lay down, staring at the ceiling.

Mr. Kleinberg hesitantly walked over to the cell door. What was going on? Why was he being called?

“Oh! Um, I was the first bank manager to install Finance2, so when they discovered that there were problems with it, they arrested me first.”

“You’re Kleinberg?” Casey asked.

“Yes.”

He appraised Mr. Kleinberg in his orange jumpsuit, who sure didn’t look like a successful businessman.

“You want to know what I’m here for?” he asked.

Mr. Kleinberg nodded, figuring he had

“I’ve been selling drugs since I was thirteen,” Casey boasted. “Nobody could deal in my neighborhood without my permission, got policemen who worked for me and a whole buncha guys who dealed and did the dirty work for me.”

Mr. Kleinberg tried to conceal his horror.

“Oh,” he said.

Casey laughed at Mr. Kleinberg’s revulsion. Then his face darkened.

“For the last twenty years I was the boss, but then a new guy came into my location and I let him in. Bad move.

The guy got himself arrested and then police got onto me.”

He cursed Poker a couple of times, then looked back at Mr. Kleinberg.

“Do you know where we are?” he asked casually.

Mr. Kleinberg wasn’t sure he should give the drug dealer any information, Jewish or not.

“You don’t know?” he asked.

“Nah, they arrested me and all my guys at my birthday party. Those police were scared of us gang doing something to jail break together, so they transferred me out here. Didn’t tell me where they were taking me, just brought me here last night and dropped me off in this

The guard unlocked the door, and motioned to Mr. Kleinberg to follow him.

Mr. Kleinberg complied, though he still had no idea what was going on, as the guard didn’t deem it necessary to tell him anything.

Which was humiliating, especially for a guy like Kleinberg, who commanded his employees to notify him of every move they made.

Soon enough, they reached a room with a wall of pay phones, and the guard turned back to Mr. Kleinberg.

“You’re getting a call from your lawyers,” he informed Mr. Kleinberg. Mr. Kleinberg looked warily at the pay phone that had begun to ring, but picked up.

“Hello?”

What did Harry want to talk about? They’d already spent two hours together yesterday, reviewing the charges and discussing exactly what Harry would tell the judge at the bail hearing.

Discussing his chances of getting out of here.

“Is this Sam Kleinberg?” Harry asked. At Mr. Kleinberg’s confirmation, he continued, “Good, I wanted to make sure. Your wife would like to speak to you. Can I give her the phone?”

Completely taken aback, Mr. Kleinberg was quiet for a few minutes.

“Yes, please do,” he said.

Mrs. Kleinberg, who’d been sitting tensely in a chair in Harry’s office, took the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hello, Shifra,” Mr. Kleinberg said, the words feeling rusty in his mouth.

There was a stilted silence.

“Harry says you told him you have everything you need. Is that true?”

“Yes, I got visitors yesterday who brought me everything I asked for,” Shmiel said. The visitors from the organization that helped incarcerated Yidden had been very helpful, despite the degradation he’d felt at needing their help.

“Do you have everything you need?” he asked his wife. Then he regretted the question. There wasn’t anything he could give her here, anyway. He was absolutely powerless to do anything to help her now as they faced the worst situation of their life.

“Yes, Shachne has been helping us,” his wife said.

“How is Perry? Bruchi? And the other kids?”

“It’s not easy to have their father arrested,” Mrs. Kleinberg said. “They’re all very shaken up. Perry especially.”

Mr. Kleinberg knew his conversations were being recorded and listened to, because Harry had told him so, but he wondered if his wife knew this, as well.

“Hopefully, I’ll get out on bail soon,” Mr. Kleinberg offered.

“Right,” Mrs. Kleinberg said. None of them mentioned what the lawyers had told them, how slight the chances for bail were.

“So you’re managing?” he checked again.

“Yes, we’re fine,” she said. She wished she could ask him more. Ask him why he had done this, why this had happened. But Harry had warned her that the police listened in to every conversation.

“Perry is very worried about you being in jail,” Mrs. Kleinberg added. “Are you safe there?”

“Yes, don’t worry,” Mr. Kleinberg said. “My cellmate is actually Jewish.”

“Really?” Mrs. Kleinberg’s interest was aroused. Were there actually other women like her in the world? “Is it someone we know?”

As if everything were normal and they were just playing Jewish Geography about a guy he’d met in shul.

On the other line, Mr. Kleinberg pictured the brawny form sprawled on the iron bedframe in his holding cell, and knew his wife couldn’t, even in her wildest imagination, visualize who he was sharing his cell with.

“No, I’m pretty sure you don’t,” he said.

“Oh.”

“Does my mother know where I am?” Mr. Kleinberg asked. One by one, going through the people who relied on him for whom he could do nothing.

“Shachne told her something, I’m not sure exactly what. You spoke to Shachne yet?”

“No, not yet.”

At least his brother had his back when it was him against the world.

“I’m going to Gila’s house, Mommy, ‘kay?” Chayala said, coming up behind her mother who was in the middle of coaxing Devoiry into pajamas.

“Sure, Chayala! What are you going to be working on?”

“Our trip, Ma, don’t you remember I told we’re going snow-tubing and class presidents need to break it out?”

“Yes, sounds like so much fun, enjoy, sweetie.”

“Mommee,” Perela came up to Mrs. Gordon’s elbow while Chayala waved goodbye and left, “I need you to help me with my homework.”

Devoiry yelped, “No, Mommy’s in middle of helping me put on pajamas!”

“But I need help with my spelling words!” Perela protested.

“As soon as I finish helping Devoiry, I’m going to come help you,” Mrs. Gordon said calmly to Perela. Perela looked mulish.

Mrs. Gordon ignored her, as she focused on Devoiry.

Meanwhile, Perela was gearing up to protest again. “But, Mommy,” she wailed. Just as she was getting started, the phone rang. Perela bolted from the room to get the phone.

Mrs. Gordon smiled to herself. Saved by the bell. Good thing that Perela loved picking up phones. She tickled Devoiry, who giggled delightedly as she put on her second pajama sleeve.

A minute later, Perela walked into the room holding a phone handset.

“Mommy, it’s for you,” she said importantly. “Somebody Mrs. Krieger wants to talk to you.”

Devoiry erupted in wails.

“No, no, no! Now Mommy’s in middle of putting me on pajamas!”

Mrs. Gordon looked helplessly at her little daughter, then took the handset

from Perela’s hand.

Of course, Perela had completely forgotten to press mute, which meant whoever was on the other line had heard every bit of Devoiry’s hysterics.

Mrs. Gordon pressed mute, then reassured Devoiry, “Mommy’s going to tell the person on the phone that I can’t talk now, okay, cutie? Then we’ll finish putting you on pajamas and Mommy will read you a story.”

Now it was Devoiry’s turn to look mulish as her mother stepped out of the room and picked up the call.

“Hello, Mrs. Gordon, I’m Goldy Korn’s tutor and her teacher Mrs. Yachimovitch told me to call you,” the voice on the other line said.

“Yes, okay, right now is not the best time for me. Can I ask you to call me back soon?”

“Well, I’m going to be tutoring Goldy soon, and Goldy is absolutely in hysterics about her Chumash test. I really feel that she needs to get a modified test. Mrs. Yachimovitch refuses to give her one, and I just can’t imagine trying to – “

“Mrs. Krieger – “

“It’s Mrs. Brieger, actually,” the woman said. “I just don’t think Goldy can do this, do you understand?”

The door opened behind Mrs. Gordon and a semi-pajama-clad Devoiry came out. “Mommy!” she wailed when she caught sight of her mother. “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!”

Seeing Devoiry’s assault on their mother, Perela appeared on Mrs. Gordon’s other side, brandishing her homework papers.

“Yes, I, uh – I hear you, Mrs. Brieger. I’ll speak to Mrs. Yachimovitch and let you know what she says. We’ll be in touch later.”

“So what do you want me to do with Goldy now?” Mrs. Brieger asked petulantly as Mrs. Gordon disconnected.

Mrs. Gordon let out a stressed breath, and set her teeth.

“Okay, Devoiry, Mommy’s coming now. Perela, please wait another minute.”

I am off dairy and I am wondering what your opinion is on oat milk. Is it weight loss friendly, and are there better alternatives?

How would you compare it to almond milk?

Oat milk boasts a rich nutritional profile, offering an array of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. While specific nutrient content may vary among brands, oat milk is generally fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients to rival the nutritional value of cow's milk.

If a client of mine prefers oat milk while on her weight loss journey, over cow’s milk, I fully support it, as long as she counts a serving of oat milk as if it were a serving of regular milk. Overconsumption of anything can ultimately lead to weight gain, so moderation is key with any food group.

When the Shabbos and Yom Tov Candles are lit they usher a special light into the world.

There was once a girl, who lived with her mother on the faraway Aleutian Islands. This little girl knew she was Jewish, but since she didn’t know of any other Jewish people, she thought she was the only Jew in the world, besides her mother. One day at school, as her mother was teaching the class, two young Rabbis, unexpectedly came in and asked if anyone in their class was Jewish. The little girl jumped up excitedly and exclaimed, “You mean we aren’t the only Jews in the world?!” After class, the Rabbis spoke with the little girl and her mother, about what it means to be a Jew. When they were asked to give one last message to the girl, they told her about the Mitzvah of lighting Shabbos candles and explained its importance.

DELVING DEEPER

As women and girls in every country light candles, they usher the light of Shabbos or Yomtov into their corner of the world. Australia is one of the first countries to bring in this light, followed by other places, such as Israel, New York, and California. As each location lights its candles, the light of Shabbos or Yomtov grows stronger and brighter. Finally, candles are lit in the last, farthest places in the world, including the Aleutian Islands, when this special circle of light is completed. Every Friday and every Erev Yomtov, as each girl lights her own candle, or watches her mother light candles, she is connected with many others and spreads the light around the entire world.

How can you help prepare for Shabbos and Yom Tov in your house? Which Yom Tov is your favorite?

Carefully place stencil over canvas.

Using a small paintbrush and gold paint, create rays around the candle.

Cut out the outline of the girl holding a candle, discarding the inside parts of the template to create a stencil.

Using the sponge, carefully paint a thin layer of your first color starting from the top of the stencil to create an ombre effect.

Your masterpiece is now complete!

Roll painters tape to create a double-sided tape and apply it all over the stencil, focusing on and around the girl and candle.

Using a new sponge, apply the next color strip below the first and blend the two layers with the lighter color sponge.
