NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 16: Naomi tries opening a “Bais Yaakov” for the older girls, but Leo Sherer announces that he will only allow the frum girls to attend it. The non-frum older girls will attend a different class, although no one is sure who the teacher of that class will be. Katarina tells Rechel that she cannot switch Naomi’s job to something else, which leaves Rechel despairing of finding a proper shidduch for Naomi.
From an article in Nugot Heyet (“Fortified Place”), the Reform monthly journal:
There is no doubt that the Orthodox leadership is celebrating a victory in light of the results of the preschool issue. Based on the signatures that were gathered, it emerges that out of fifty-eight students in the preschool, only twenty-six of them signed up for a liberal education. Thirty-two subscribed to the religious track. The dispute between Miss Naomi Schvirtz, who at first took upon herself the job of “everyone’s teacher,” and the assistant, Mila Orenchik, who speaks clearly about resigning because of what is considered to her to be a resounding failure, has now come to an end. But there is no clear information about how the division will be implemented, on a practical level. What is clear without a doubt is that something about the results requires some thorough clarification. Because although the religious community is numerically larger than the other residents, still, among the names that requested a religious education for their children are some which raise prominent question marks. Is this really what they chose, or is it a clever
forgery? It’s hard to believe that someone would try to forge something that can so easily be refuted. But how else can the idea be explained that families that are very connected to the Sherer group have gone and chosen the other option? It seems that there is something here concealed beneath the surface...
“Who wrote this article?” Suzy Elkovitz, Dror’s mother, asked her husband. “Was it my cousin Ernie?”
“Very possible,” her husband, David, replied. “You can see he tried hard not to offend your father: ‘families that are very connected to the Sherer group’… Anyone who doesn’t know will not understand.”
“Who doesn’t know now?” she asked in frustration. “Tell me, who needed this whole story? Until now, we could all continue doing what we wanted, quietly, at home. And in preschool, Dror received a really nice religious education, and no one knew what I really wanted.”
“Well, you also relied on Dror not to say anything.”
“So he talked, okay, I know, but it wasn’t anything serious. Who heard him say something about it, his teacher? They treated it just like they treat all childish chatter, and even if they thought that something was happening to me, it’s alright. But now that we had to actually go and choose…”
“Look, you could have chosen the other option,” David pointed out. “Then no one would have thought anything about us.”
“Choose the other option? I should sign that we want Dror to get an education of heresy?”
He smiled. “It’s true, we don’t want that.”
“And I’m happy about our choice, that we picked Miss Schvirtz’s group for Dror,” Suzy continued. “He is thrilled about it too, although I have no idea what exactly he understands of this whole mess. I tried to explain it to him a little bit, but I don’t exactly want to explain the whole thing to anyone else who wants to know what’s going on and what’s being ‘concealed beneath the surface,’ as Ernie writes.”
“If people ask you about it, you can always say that you simply love Naomi very much, so you wanted to send Dror only to her.”
“I actually made a point of keeping a distance from her and their whole group. I didn’t want anyone to figure out how much I’m interested.”
“So say that Dror gets along better with her than with any of the other teachers.”
“All these excuses and answers may or may not help, but you know who they will definitely not satisfy.”
“Your father,” he agreed quietly.
“From the next room, they could hear the bed moving. “It’s Dror,” Suzy said.
“No, it’s Janku,” her husband said, as he was sitting closer to the door and saw the child who arose. “What’s the matter, son? You can’t fall asleep?”
“Will Grandpa be very angry?” the boy asked, his forehead lined with worry.
“Let’s hope not,” his father replied.
“Is he going to ask me if I put on tefillin?”
“Maybe, but it’s more likely that he won’t even think about details like that.”
“And if he does ask?”
“Then you will say that you do.”
maybe instead of giving a hundred half-truths, you can say one simple truth: Your grandfather and your father have always put on tefillin, and that’s why you do it. And your mother began to take an interest in the whole thing, as well. Does that say something about all of us or not? We can decide that it does, or that it doesn’t, or that we just don’t want to decide right now.”
Janku sat down on the wooden floor. “What will you tell someone who asks you, Papa?”
“I’m not sure; we’ll see,” his father replied calmly.
“And you, Mama?”
From the inner room, they could hear Dror’s sleepy voice: “Mama said that now it doesn’t matter if people know that she lights candles for Shabbos, like Naomi told us!”
His words brought a small smile to all of their faces. But a moment later, the smiles disappeared. After all, no one in this place liked to receive uninvited guests in the middle of the night.
Even if you registered Dror in the religious teacher’s group, does that say something about all of us?
“And I’ll tell him that it’s yours, a private pair, from Grandpa Elkovitz, z”l, who put them on until his dying day without telling anyone. So he should know that they don’t belong to someone from the religious group.”
His father smiled. “They do belong to someone from the religious group, Janku. They belong to me. And you can say that, according to some people, yesterday afternoon we officially switched to this group.”
“My friends asked me about it this morning,” their thirteen-yearold son said, looking worried. “And I told them it’s none of their business. Do we need to decide who we belong to, Mama? Even if you registered Dror in the religious teacher’s group, does that say something about all of us? In any case, in two years, Dror will be able to leave the preschool and join me at the kennels. So what difference does it make which group he belongs to now?”
“Anyone who wants can evade the question,” his father replied. “A minute ago, I suggested all kinds of responses for Mama. But
“Your father has no restrictions about being outside, is that right?” David asked in a low voice, as he carefully listened to the sounds from outside.
“That’s right.” She got up and went to the door. “On condition that he maintains a complete blackout, of course.”
“So I think that’s him now. There’s no reason to think it’s someone from the manor house, right?”
“It’s him,” she confirmed, one ear pressed to the door. “Them, to be more precise. My mother got the approval together with him, years ago.”
“And still, this is the first time we’ve ever had the privilege of them coming over late at night,” he said quietly, just as there was a knock at the door. “And we’ll have to decide if it is indeed a privilege ”
Bentzy’s eyelids drooped heavily as he ate the meal his mother had warmed up for him, though he tried to smile at Dena. He asked her how her day had been, and how the children were, and how Vienna was treating her, and how she was handling her homesickness. So many “hows” that Dena couldn’t insert a single “how” of her own. So she didn’t ask him how it had been to be in the factory a whole day, and how he was managing with davening, and how it was to oversee a group of non-Jewish workers, and how it worked there with the kashrus organization.
But on the fourth day, when he remarked that Duvi and Shloimy would really enjoy a visit at his father’s factory, and they should come see it one day, she did ask him how they would get there.
“With you,” Bentzy replied naturally. “I mean, my mother would have to bring everyone, but I’m sure that you would also enjoy a tour of the factory. You’d enjoy seeing the organized way that things are run there, on such a large scale. It’s a huge place, and I think you’ll like seeing it.”
She really did enjoy the visit to the factory, perhaps even more
than the children did. They had exhausted their enthusiasm after twenty minutes there, but she was still standing and staring, fascinated, at the huge, humming machines she saw all around her. One machine kept making a rhythmic “voom” sound, and with every “voom,” it emitted a small mound of red powder that got dumped directly into a long, plastic pipe, whose end disappeared into the depths of another huge machine.
“Premium Israeli paprika,” her mother-in-law said. She was serving as their unofficial tour guide. “The pepper crops in Israel are excellent, and the paprika made from them is very much in demand.”
“Everything really does look very fresh and of high quality,” Dena said. “How do they pack it?”
“That machine closes the bags and cuts them into separate packages. There’s also another pipe on the other side that transfers the paprika into half-kilo containers, or one, three, or six kilogram containers.”
“Who buys six kilograms of paprika at a time?” Dena asked, walking carefully on the PVC floors. The factory was clean, in principle, but the air was filled with all kinds of tiny particles of spices that managed to get out of the machines, and then fell to the floor in a thin layer.
“There are institutions, hotels, chefs who cook in industrial amounts,” her mother-in-law said. “And our paprika is very popular, baruch Hashem.”
“Not only in Hungary?” Dena asked with a smile.
“No, certainly not only there.” She chuckled. “Uh-oh, where is Shloimy?”
Dena spun around quickly. The child was standing on the other side of the packing hall, staring wide-eyed at a transparent pipe from the ceiling, which was full of something that also looked like paprika.
“That’s hot paprika, perfect for fish,” her private tour guide supplied. “But go and call him; he might start sneezing if he stands there for too long.”
“Your fish is delicious; I imagine that it’s the paprika you use.” Dena smiled again at her mother-in-law and then hurried over to her son.
Bluma Hanter followed her daughter-in-law. “That’s right. There’s nothing like those peppers from the Holy Land, huh? And you needed to come all the way to Vienna to see it up close… Sometimes you need to go to a different place, to see how things that look so simple, familiar, and not so special, can actually become high-quality products.”
Is there a woman in the world who likes to be preached to by her mother-in-law?
Dena nodded politely, though she was ninety-nine percent sure that this last statement of her mother-in-law contained some sort of message for her, and she continued on toward Shloimy.

Recap: While cornering Jerry at the party, Detective Garrison, disguised as Poker, presses a hidden button. Two minutes later, a police force descends on the party, surrounding the place completely. Garrison makes sure that Casey is the first one to get arrested. Mrs. Kleinberg tells her daughters that the court postponed the next hearing, and while they wait for the next one, they’ll be going back to school as regular.
Chayala Gordon admits to her mother that she asked to drop her class president job because she overheard her mother’s conversation regarding leaving her principal job and was afraid that she was part of the cause.
The drug bust was wildly successful.
Garrison sat in Lieutenant Blackman’s office, waiting for his boss to come join him for a meeting post-bust.
Meanwhile, he scrolled the headlines that were popping up all over the place, his self-satisfaction inflating as he read article after article about his success.
“63 Arrests in Undercover Drug Operation, Drug King Behind Bars!”
“Man Responsible for Multiple Tons of Drug Trafficking Arrested!”
“Detective Routs a Multi-million dollar Drug Lord!”
In the smaller words of the article underneath, the journalists explained just why Casey’s arrest was so significant. Casey had worked directly underneath Pablo, a Mexican drug lord who sent a huge percentage of illegal drugs into the U.S.
Now, with one of his closest contacts arrested, not only was Casey’s entire drug ring busted, Pablo’s activities would also be affected until he reestablished himself.
“Good work, Garrison,” Lieutenant Blackman said as he strode into the office.
Garrison looked up, and his gratification clearly showed on his face.
“Thanks, Boss,” he said. “It was a smooth operation, wasn’t it?”
Blackman inclined his head.
“Some violence, but overall,” he said.
Garrison nodded. Of course, they had been expecting some fighting, but the complete takeover had left most of the drug party attendees too bewildered to react in time.
“We’ve got sixty-three down,” Blackman continued. “How many convictions do you think?”
During the time Garrison had spent working undercover, he’d been busy collecting evidence on all the people in the drug world he interacted with.
That was the riskiest part of the job, but it was also the most necessary, because actually putting each of the arrested behind bars would take hard evidence in court.
“You’ve heard the recordings,” Garrison said, referencing the drug deals he’d gone to that he had carefully recorded on a hidden recording device. “And we’ll work on gathering testimony for plea deals.”
Lieutenant Blackman nodded. “Yes, that too.”
“We’ll be busy with the arraignments and court hearings now. Lots of work cut out for us.” Garrison said.
There was a moment of quiet.
“There’s a long road still to go,” Lieutenant Blackman said, “but let’s not forget what we’ve accomplished in getting here. You’ve done a top-notch job.”
Garrison was pretty sure that that was the highest level of praise that Blackman had ever given in his career. He stood up and extended his hand to Garrison to shake.
“Keep the celebrations toned down, though,” Blackman warned. “No need for press.”
Garrison nodded, smiling.
He didn’t need to celebrate. The articles in the media he’d just read were doing enough celebrating for him. ***
Bruchi shuffled down the steps, her bleary eyes contrasting with her perfectly pressed uniform and freshly brushed hair.
She’d gotten ready for school, because her mother had said that that was what she had to do. Feeling numb. Not feeling anything.
Pushing away the thoughts that had kept her up half the night.
Her mother was sitting at the breakfast table, palms wrapped around a cup of coffee, which she wasn’t drinking. Perry was standing at the counter, cutting up some fruit.
“What do you want to eat for breakfast and take along for snack?” her mother asked Bruchi.
Like everything was normal.
Bruchi opened some cabinets, taking out a granola bar and a snack bag.
“That’s all?” her mother asked in surprise.
“I’m not hungry,” Bruchi replied shortly. “Buy something for lunch, then,” her mother said automatically. “In case you get hungry later.”
“How?” Bruchi asked.
Her mother’s mouth opened. Then she closed it.
Shachne had given her a credit card so that they would have what to live on until their assets were unfrozen, but she couldn’t give it to Bruchi obviously. Besides, could they afford to buy takeout lunch now?
And was it even fair to do that in this situation?
The expression on Perry’s face made it clear what she thought about that idea. “Tatty probably doesn’t even have kosher food to eat,” she said out loud, not looking at her mother or sister.
Mrs. Kleinberg felt a wave of some unidentifiable emotion overcome her, choking her throat and threatening to drown her. She closed her eyes.
“We’re going to take care of that today,” she said, her tone aggressive. “You don’t need to punish yourself for Tatty’s sake.”
Perry shrugged.
Bruchi made a facial equivalent of the same.
Mrs. Kleinberg stood up and headed for her pocketbook.
“Here’s some cash, Bruchi. Use it if you’re hungry.”
She didn’t tell her daughter that it was the last few bills in her pocketbook, and that after it was used up, they would need to rely on charity for their bread
and butter.
For as long as she could pretend that their lifestyle didn’t need to change, she wanted to pretend.
Bruchi took the bills her mother proffered, stowing them away in her schoolbag.
She hadn’t used cash in ages. She’d almost forgot what money looked like. Come to think of it, wasn’t it because of that AI program that her father hadn’t wanted her to use cash as money anymore, so that the program could keep track of what she was spending on?
Thinking about the AI program made her feel nauseous, so she said, “Okay, thanks, Mommy!”
She took a look at her watch. “I told Zlaty I’m meeting her on the corner, so I’m going, kay?”
Her mother nodded.
Perry watched her go wistfully. Despite Bruchi carrying on about her refusal to go back to school when her mother had wanted to force her, it was Perry who would have a far harder time with it.
Perry was the more sensitive of the two, and she was far more affected by what was going on.
Bruchi left, closing the door gently behind her.
Perry turned to her mother.
“Do I really need to go to school? Maybe I can stay home and come with you instead?”
“No!” her mother responded instantly. “You can’t come to a meeting with the lawyers, that doesn’t make any sense. You belong in school, and that’s that.”
Perry blinked back the tears gathering in the corners of her eyes.
“Didn’t you make up to go to school with Dina?”
“Yes, I did,” Perry said around the lump in her throat.
“So she’s probably waiting for you already. And I need to get going because Uncle Shachne is probably waiting for me also. So let’s go.”
Reluctantly, Perry hefted her schoolbag onto her shoulder.
Mrs. Kleinberg watched her go, making a mental note to call Mrs. Gordon.
Mrs. Gordon had somehow figured out how to help these girls when she, their mother, was at a loss. She hated the idea of asking for help, especially from Mrs. Gordon, but she didn’t have the energy to deal with her girls’ angst now.
She would let Mrs. Gordon deal with it
instead. ***
Despite his daughter’s ominous predictions, Shmiel Kleinberg did have kosher food in jail. He was not the first Jewish person to be held in the jail’s facilities, and the guards knew what he was allowed to eat and what he wasn’t. The few bites he managed to force down did their job of nourishing him, but before he could really notice what he was eating, the guard was already collecting his breakfast food tray. It was another demeaning experience, piled on top of the thousands of humiliations he’d undergone since his arrest not 48 hours before.
Shmiel Kleinberg, known to the world as Sam, had been an arrogantly successful businessman. But now, after being toppled from his perch of success to this pit of despair, where he couldn’t even eat a few bites of tasteless food without someone interrupting him, his thoughts focused on the mistakes he’d made before calamity had struck.
He’d been reckless and foolhardy, blinded by the promise of instant, effortless riches. And when those riches had come along with unprecedented fame, he was even more bewitched into following the glamorous road that that evil robot had led him down.
How had he not realized the kind of ditch he was digging for himself? How had he ignored all the flashing red flags?
The guilt and shame of having done this to himself, to his family, was excruciating.
Sunk in his ruminations, Mr. Kleinberg felt the bitterness of black despair overtaking him.
He hardly noticed the unusual activity and noise going on all around the jail, as a huge amount of arrestees were processed and hustled into cells.
No one in the jail was worrying about one guy named Mr. Kleinberg. They were too busy dealing with the drugdealing fish that they’d caught the night before.
Shachne was, as always, full of optimism.
“So now that we have more time to prepare, we’ll be able to work harder to get him bail,” he said as he started the meeting between Mr. Kleinberg’s two lawyers, Mrs. Kleinberg, and himself.
Harry Lipman, Mr. Kleinberg’s senior lawyer, inclined his head.

“We’ll have to work very hard,” he cautioned. Mrs. Kleinberg set her jaw. He kept on trying to deflate their hopes, and it was getting her down.
“That’s your job,” she said acridly.
“True,” Harry acknowledged. “But I’m not in control of what the judge decides, and these two days we’re getting aren’t going to help us much.”
That led to a discussion between Shachne and the lawyers that Mrs. Kleinberg mostly stayed out of, though she noticed how both Harry and Shea, the two lawyers, shot down every optimistic comment Shachne made.
Finally, she’d had enough.
“If you don’t think you can win this for us,” she broke in boldly, addressing the lawyers, “then we can hire a different law firm. Why are you so sure that there’s no hope here?”
The three men turned to her in surprise.
Poor woman, Shachne thought. He hadn’t told her the truth, that there were few lawyers who had been willing to even talk to him about the case. With the fog of smoke surrounding the Kleinberg case, nobody wanted to get involved.
The only reason Harry and Shea had agreed to take on the case was due to their longstanding work relationship.
But Shachne hadn’t wanted her to know this.
Now Harry and Shea looked toward him.
“Well,” Shachne said uncomfortably, aware that it was up to him to defuse the situation, “I’m pretty sure that no one else is going to do as good of a job.”
“You have to realize, Mrs. Kleinberg,” Shea, the second lawyer, said, “that there is a lot of confusion about the case as of right now, and the media is painting a black picture of your husband. Not many people would be willing to join his team.”
It was pointed, and Shachne squirmed as the ugly truth was told. Mrs. Kleinberg’s face wilted.
She didn’t say anything more.
The three men picked up their discussion where they’d left off.
“So we don’t think that the persecution is going to give us an easy time getting a plea deal, but eventually, they’ll probably offer one, though it might be a very bad one,” Harry said, continuing his train of thought. “And since we’re talking about how public perception might shape the possibility of getting bail, we should think about the fact that most people assume that he’s guilty.”
Mrs. Kleinberg tuned it out, wrapping herself in melancholy thoughts and escape fantasies instead. When the lawyers finally left, she was happy to see them go. She was dizzy from all this talk.
Shachne was just about to start explaining to her what had been discussed, when he received a call from Harry himself.
“He just left. What’s he calling about now?” Shachne wondered as he accepted the call.
As soon as he picked up, Harry started jabbering into his ear. Shachne listened carefully, an expression of amazement spreading across his face. •
As parents we worry about our children’s future and wonder how we can best prepare them for “real life.” What will they really need to make it out there, to live fruitful, productive Jewish lives, to find and keep a job and build relationships? So much of our efforts go into choosing the right school and making certain our children’s academic potential is fully tapped. But is this enough?
Filtering through the educational world as a result of current research is the revelation that success in life is more contingent on social and emotional intelligence than our intellectual or vocational aptitudes.
Many of us have always sensed this instinctively. Now the research confirms it.
Social competence enables us to know what to say, how to make good choices, and how to behave in diverse situations. The extent to which children and adolescents possess good social skills, say experts, can heavily influence their academic performance, social and family relationships, and later, their success on the job.
How do these dynamics work? Can improving social skills actually sharpen children’s mathematical acuity? Is it possible that knowing how to get along with others could boost performance in creative writing or understanding of literature?
“Yes,” says Stephen Elliot, a prominent educational psychologist connected with Vanderbilt University. “If we increase social skills, we most definitely see commensurate increases in academic learning, but that doesn't mean that social skills make you smarter. It means that these skills make you more amenable to learning."
Elliot and some associates recently completed a study that found that
“when we incorporate cooperation, self-control and consideration toward others into the curriculum, we reduce problem behaviors and maximize effective learning."
The top 10 social skills the researchers identified were: listening to others; heeding the rules, ignoring distractions, asking for help, taking turns when talking, getting along with peers; staying calm with others; good sportsmanship, taking responsibility for one's behavior, and doing nice things for others.
If that list, cited in a recent UPI article, sounds like it came straight out of a yeshiva curriculum for teaching good middos, character traits, it certainly could have.
In a sense, educators and psychologists are “reinventing the wheel,” discovering a fundamental truth about education established by the Mishnah two thousand years ago! Namely, before education can proceed, good character traits must be developed [Derech eretz kodma l’Torah.]
For decades, IQ tests that measured intelligence focused on logical reasoning, math skills, understanding analogies, spatial skills, verbal skills and the like. Researchers were puzzled by the fact that while IQ scores could most often predict academic performance and to some degree, professional and personal success, there was something missing in the equation.
Some of those with fabulous IQ scores were doing poorly in life—both at their jobs and in their interpersonal relationships. It seemed that often they were thinking, behaving and communicating in a way that hindered their chances to succeed.

Goleman, “Emotional Intelligence: Why It May Matter More Than IQ,” sought to explain the phenomenon of finding excellent IQ aptitudes in a person coupled with poor performance “at life.”
Goleman suggested that the missing part in the success equation is emotional intelligence.
For various reasons, he said, people with high emotional intelligence [EIQ] tend to be more successful in life than those with lower EIQ, even if their intellectual ability is average.
Goleman defined emotional intelligence as the abililty to understand oneself and others, relate well to people, and to adapt to one’s immediate surroundings. He believes that those individuals with higher than average emotional intelligence are in general more successful in meeting environmental demands and pressures. He also notes that a deficiency in EI is often reflected by a lack of self-awareness, as well as difficulty with problem solving, stress tolerance and impulse control.
Goleman attests that the best remedy for battling our emotional shortcomings is preventive medicine. In other words, we need to place as much importance on teaching our children the essential skills of emotional intelligence as we do on more traditional measures.
Researchers point to the following ingredients of emotional intelligence that most enhance and enable learning:
• Self awareness
One of the basic emotional skills involves being able to recognize feelings and put a name on them. It is also important to be aware of the relationship between thoughts, feelings

and actions. What thought sparked off that feeling? What feeling was behind that action?
• Managing emotions
Many people continually give themselves negative messages. Recognizing that tendency and reversing it with hope and selfaffirmation can be liberating. In addition, finding ways to deal with anger, fear, anxiety and sadness is essential. Learning how to soothe oneself when upset is an invaluable tool. Understanding what happens when emotions get the upper hand and how to regain perspective before reacting are some of the most precious life skills.
• Empathy
Grasping a situation and being able to act appropriately requires understanding others’ feelings and being able to tune into their verbal and non-verbal cues. It involves training oneself to see things from different vantage points and conveying to others that their feelings resonate with you.
• Communicating
What feelings are your communicating to others? Enthusiasm and optimism are contagious as are pessimism and negativity. Being able to express personal concerns without offending or intimidating others is a key asset.
• Co-operation
Helping each other work on common goals involves knowing how and when to take the lead and when to follow. It also calls for understanding that actions and decisions carry consequences and that commitments must be kept. Recognizing the value of others’ contributions and encouraging their participation is of vital importance and often accomplishes far more than hogging power and giving orders.
• Resolving conflicts
In resolving conflicts, one must understand some of the psychological mechanisms at play. People in conflict are generally locked into a selfperpetuating emotional spiral that blows the conflict out of proportion and often obscures the real issue. Much of the resolution of conflicts calls on using the other emotional skills mentioned above.
The concept of emotional and social training being pivotal to education is catching fire with educators across the country, inspiring research and curriculum development in public and private schools as well as at universities.
A recent issue of Edutopia, an education magazine, profiled
Benjamin Franklin Middle School in New Jersey, where a traditional curriculum has been restructured to include social and emotional training as an integral part of the learning in grades 6-8.
• An English class discussion on a novel about the Warsaw Ghetto is directed in such a way that it becomes a conversation about what students can do to combat injustice they witness in their own lives.
• A journal-writing session first includes a discussion on what it must feel like to be a foster child.
• A lesson aimed specifically at emotional skills has students naming conflicts that create the most stress for them and coming up with ways to abate that stress.
• Teachers working on a project on the Holocaust meet to come up with ways to engage the students on a personal, emotional level.
"I believe that the social/emotional component is clearly the most important of a child's life," the article quoted Principal Tony Bencivenga as saying. "If we can create an environment where we feel good and care for each other, everything else falls into place.'
The True Trailblazers
Ironically, while researchers and educators like Daniel Goleman regard themselves as pioneers in the field of social/emotional training, a close look at the dynamics inside a normative yeshiva would reveal that Torah chinuch and mechanchim have long preceded them.
In fact, an excellent blueprint for social/emotional training can be found in the many middos training programs that are part and parcel of many Bais Yaakov curricula, and in the mussar sedorim that are a vital component of yeshivas. For centuries, ethical values such as self-control, kindness, selfawareness, honesty and responsibility have been the cornerstone of Jewish education.
Of course, the Torah system of middostraining cannot be equated with a social/emotional training course in a public school, which carries no higher “moral authority.”
As opposed to teaching children to uphold values because the Creator of the universe has commanded them to do so and bestows reward and punishment in accordance with one’s compliance, a secular program draws its mandate from the feeble authority of “pragmatics.”
At bottom, its message is, “Do things our way because it works; because you’ll have friends; because it will make you happy; because it’s good
for society.”
In a 1994 report on the current state of emotional literacy in the U.S., Daniel Goleman stated:
"...in navigating our lives, it is our fears and envies, our rages and depressions, our worries and anxieties that steer us day to day. Even the most academically brilliant among us are vulnerable to being undone by unruly emotions. The price we pay for emotional “illiteracy” [social incompetence] is in failed marriages and troubled families, in stunted social and work lives, in deteriorating physical health and mental anguish. "
As Goleman is showered with accolades for his trailblazing work in the field of emotional and social training, the hoopla over his “revelations” bring a smile to the lips of many in the field of chinuch who have long been practicing what educators are just now discovering.
How Our Children Benefit
Nevertheless, the new emphasis in educational circles on teaching social competence and developing emotional intelligence is bestowing dividends on yeshiva and day school children as well.
“There was a time when telling a parent at a PTA conference that their child needed coaching in social skills brought a blank stare,” remarked Mrs. Stern, a fifth grade teacher in a boys’ school in Monsey, N.Y. ‘Alright, so he lacks social polish,’ you could hear the parent thinking, ‘What difference does that make as long as he can read and write?’”
“Today, there’s an awareness among parents that when we assess a child’s progress, we’re using a much broader focus. We’re looking at the whole child, because good scores in the three R’s alone does not a happy child make.”
Nothing So Painful As Rejection
For one reason or another, some children do not develop social skills as easily as others. They may earnestly seek peer relationships and then, having endured rebuffs, if not downright cruelty, retreat to the safety of home, family, and their own company.
Seven-year old Yehudit, the oldest of four children, was such a child. Energetic, with a precocious vocabulary and a vivid imagination, she eagerly sought out other playmates. Yet, despite repeated efforts to make friends at school, she came home dejected and sad. “No one wants to play with me,” she told her mother tearfully. “No one ever invites me or wants to come to my house.”
Yehudit’s mother was distraught.
She was convinced that her daughter’s classmates were mean-spirited children and considered changing Yehudit’s school.
There is probably nothing so painful for a parent as the rejection of their child. Most parents have a difficult time grasping that the child’s isolation might be a product of her own conduct, and not merely because the children in the class are snobby and illmannered.
In Yehudit’s case, it took a caring teacher to risk the mother’s anger while tactfully explaining that while her daughter loved outdoor games, she could not tolerate the disappointment of losing a game or being “out.” She invariably broke down in tears, even throwing a tantrum on the playground and refusing to budge when she was “out” at jump rope or dodge ball.
Her immature behavior and poor sportsmanship antagonized her classmates. After a while, no one wanted to include her in games.
While maturity is not a “skill” one can learn like good table manners, parents need to take the long view of social deficits and, with the help of a professional, map out a plan to address them as carefully and thoughtfully as they would approach academic or health problems.
There are tried and proven approaches in teaching good sportsmanship and other essential social skills, which, if the parent is willing to take time and initiative to follow them through, will almost inevitably yield success.
During the period of emotional and social growth there will be minor triumphs, but the road will undoubtedly be rutted with an occasional major disaster. Parents should not be disheartened. Children tend to have spurts of social and emotional growth laced with periods of holding their own or even periods of regression.
The key words for parents are good parental modeling, structure, patience— and more patience. The key attitudes are warmth and optimism. And if you embrace your child with all her uniqueness while not losing sight of the hard work you both need to do to reach a happier place, it is much more likely that you will get there sooner than you think.

Salad Ingredients:
2-3 heads fresh Romaine Lettuce, washed, checked and chopped into bite sized pieces (I used baby Romaine)
½ cup roughly-chopped pistachios
1-2 sweet potatoes
1-2 beets

QI enjoy reading your weekly column. I have a question: I am over 50 years B”H and eating healthy but can't lose weight (about 10-15 lbs). Even more, I think I am gaining some inches in the process. Is it true that with age it's not easy to lose? Do I need to change my good eating habits because of my age? I am sure many more readers would benefit from your guidance. Thank you so much!
AEntering your fifties can be a time of profound change, both physically and mentally. Among the many adjustments that come with this stage of life, maintaining a healthy weight becomes increasingly important. While it's a common belief that metabolism slows down with age, recent research suggests otherwise. However, other factors, such as loss of muscle mass and hormonal shifts, can significantly impact weight management. Contrary to popular belief, metabolism doesn't inherently slow down as we age. Instead, what often happens is a decline in muscle mass. Since muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue, this loss can lead to a decrease in metabolic rate. As a result, even if you continue eating the same amount of food, you may find it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.
One of the most effective ways to combat muscle loss and maintain a healthy weight is through regular physical activity. Incorporating a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises can help address different aspects of fitness while supporting overall health. Let’s break these exercise modalities down a bit:
1. Cardiovascular Exercises:
Activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing can elevate your heart rate, improve circulation, and boost calorie expenditure. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, as recommended by health experts.
2. Strength Training:
Strength training exercises, using resistance bands, free weights, or machines, are crucial for preserving and building muscle mass. This not only enhances metabolism but also improves bone density, balance, and functional capacity.
Aim for two to three sessions per week, targeting major muscle groups.
3. Flexibility and Balance Exercises:
Yoga, and Pilates are excellent choices for improving flexibility, balance, and core strength. These exercises not only promote physical wellbeing but also support mental relaxation and stress reduction, which are essential components of a holistic weight management strategy.
Also, very importantly, paying attention to dietary habits is paramount for successful weight management. As we age, our calorie needs may decrease, making portion control and nutrient density crucial. It's essential to be mindful of hidden calories in seemingly healthy snacks and treats. Even small indulgences can add up over time and contribute to weight gain. I find that many women that are in your age group, are very, very busy caring for their parents, children at home, and grandchildren. You are constantly on the go, running after your tail, and noshing and nibbling become part of your lifestyle. These calories all add up and slowly, after a few weeks, do accrue and make you gain weight. It is a slow shift that needs to be nipped in the bud. Make yourself a rule, that if a food item is not part of your meal, or allowed snack, you cannot nibble on the food in front of you. Cutting out eating after dinnertime can help you out tremendously here as well.
For many women, age brings about significant hormonal shifts that can influence weight regulation. While these changes are a natural part of aging, they can present challenges in maintaining a healthy weight. Exploring hormonal options, such as herbal supplements like black cohosh or maca root, may offer support in managing symptoms and optimizing overall wellbeing.

During the Pesach Seder, we drink four cups of wine as a way of expressing gratitude to Hashem for the great miracle He performed.
Playing ball outside with your older sibling. Suddenly, the ball bounces away into the street! You know it’s dangerous to run into the street, so you just watch it roll farther and farther away, feeling sad that the ball is gone. Looking up, you are met with a pleasant surprise, your sibling carefully looks both ways and goes into the street to get the ball back! Not only are you so relieved to have the ball back, but you are so grateful to your sibling for helping. Feeling grateful, you create a thank you card and even offer to help with their chores! The memory of how sad you felt and how thankful the help was, evokes ways to show how much it meant.
Hashem performed a great miracle for the Yidden by freeing them from slavery in a place from which they could not escape. Every year, during Pesach, we express our gratitude for this miracle in various ways. One of these ways is by drinking four cups of wine during the Seder, with each cup symbolizing a form of gratitude that we have for Hashem. We can apply this concept of expressing gratitude in our daily lives as well. When someone does something kind for us, it is important to show them appreciation. For instance, if a friend or a sibling helps you with your homework or shares their toys with you, make sure to thank them. You can show your gratitude by saying “thank you,” writing them a thank you note, or giving them a small token of appreciation.
Who are some individuals that you can express gratitude for their daily contributions to your life? What are ways to show appreciation?
In a cup, add 2 teaspoons of yeast & 4 tablespoons of water. Mix & set aside
Add a bit of purple food coloring to the bottle.
Start by filling an empty bottle with 6 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. Then, add a squirt of dish soap.
Pour the yeast mixture into the bottle & watch in amazement as the exothermic reaction starts to release.
Wishing you a Pesach that is overflowing with blessings! Happy & Kosher Pesach
Swirl your bottle to mix the compounds.
Uh oh, it is חספ ברע and this bedroom has 10 pieces of ץמח hidden inside. Can you nd it? All the ץמח should be colored in red. The rest of the room, you can color however you like.
Did you find all the ץמח in this room?
