Acowboy clinician once said, “Never trust a horseman whose chaps look new.”

That is not a concern with Bud Lyon of Whitesboro, Texas, a seasoned Western performance horse trainer, multiple-time AQHA, APHA and NSBA Ranch Riding World Champion, and the defending 2024 Championship Show Open Ranch Riding Challenge titleholder. Not that Lyon can’t polish up when it counts. When he steps into the show pen with a Lyon Performance Horse, like Dan and Katie Fox’s Double Tapn, the 2024 National Snaffle Bit Association Horse of the Year and an AQHA World Champion, the presentation is as sharp as the square brim on a Shorty’s Caboy Hat.

“He’s elevating the ranch horse classes,” Lyon said, after learning the Quarter Horse gelding by Lil Joe Cash/Nu Chex To Cash out of Topsail Whiz mare, Whiz N Snap, had earned the NSBA title. “He’s an exceptional athlete and show horse.”

Much like Lyon himself, who’s carved a standout path to the top of the ranch riding world by mastering the subtle, skillful art of bringing out the best in a horse while, as the NRHA rule book puts it, guiding and controlling every step.

THE IN-GATE

He grew up near the beaches of southern California but it was horses (not surfboards) that he remembers his father introducing around the fifth grade. A father’s hobby soon became a son’s passion.

“I began showing at the local and 4-H levels before competing in the all-around events at AQHA shows. Around age 14, my show horse got injured and required significant time off. Dad had been dabbling in reining and was nice enough to give up his horse in the interim.” Except by the time his horse recovered, “I was immersed in reining.”

He continued to study under the tutelage of one of the finest trainers in the Quarter Horse industry, ‘Winning Strides’ founder Dana Hokana, as well as with NRCHA

Three Million Dollar Rider Todd Crawford and NRCHA Hall of Fame trainer Don Murphy.

Graduating from California Polytechnic State University, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, to work as an assistant trainer under

Bud Lyon with AQHA Senior Ranch Riding World Champion, Lil Trash Talk, shown for owner Susan Van Cleve.

Riding With The Lyon King

NRHA Million Dollar Rider and working cow horse trainer (later 2023 NRCHA Hall of Famer), Randy Paul. Lyon spent seven years apprenticing before moving to Texas in 2008.

His dedication has paid off.

In 2015, he told KimesRanch. com, “Winning the Amateur Reining Championship at the AQHA World Show was particularly special. It was the last time that I showed my favorite horse, Lulus Freckles, and the win cemented my desire to pursue a career path in the horse industry.”

And given all his AQHA World Championship titles since, it’s easy to see why ReinerStop TV host Sheley Brien drolly quipped, “You might get

him [Lyon] to admit that he makes a pretty decent horse trainer.”

By 2018, the same year he married Kim Colvin, their Western performance horse careers gained momentum. They bought a Smart Chic Olena stallion from the Babcock Ranch dispersal sale with the intent to compete in reining.

“We thought he had all the parts to be a nice reining horse,” Lyon chuckled, “but he didn’t! Kim enjoyed riding him and asked if she could do ranch riding on him. It gave him a job and her some fun.”

She qualified the horse for Amateur and Senior Ranch Riding and kept nudging her husband to ride the horse in the Senior class.

In 2024, Lyon and Romeo’s owner, AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Leslie Vaugner Lange, showed the gelding to the AQHA Superhorse title, the first ranch horse-focused exhibitor to do so and earn the win.

“Long story short, I got drafted to show him and got lucky scoring well in the prelims. Then in the finals, I got my butt kicked and was the first called off the rail.”

The stallion didn’t care but for Lyon, it spurred new appreciation for how deceptively difficult the discipline looked. “It’s truly an art form to do it well and make it look easy. That spring-boarded my foray into the ranch events.”

With Chics Dream About Me, he won the Senior Ranch Riding title at the 2018 AQHA World Championship Show, followed by wins in 2020 in the Junior and 2021 Senior Ranch Riding divisions on Lil Trash Talk. Then, he achieved back-to-back Ranch Trail titles on Gunner Got Out before capping 2023 with a Senior Ranch Riding win and new world record aboard SUMAC Gunnabeflashy.

HIGH PERFORMANCES

Among the equine partners helping him rewrite ranch horse history has been a stout sorrel gelding,

Bud Lyon with a trio of chromey champions: 2024 AQHA Super Horse SUMAC Gunnabeflash, 2023 AQHA Junior Ranch Riding World Champion Double Tapn, and 2021 AQHA Senior Ranch Riding World Champion Lil Trash Talk.

SUMAC Gunnabeflashy, or Romeo. This became the first horse to win all three phases of the Ranch Horse Triple Crown Challenge, presented by Four Star Quarter Horses, and first (2023) to win NSBA Horse of the Year showing exclusively in ranch horse events.

But wait, there’s more. In 2024, Lyon and Romeo’s owner, AQHA Professional Horsewoman of the Year, Leslie Vaugner Lange, showed the gelding to the AQHA Superhorse title, the first ranch horse-focused exhibitor to do so and earn the win.

With earnings in a robust six figures, the chromey gelding with the wide blaze is one of the mostwinning Ranch Riding horses in the country. But to Lyon and Lange, he’s just a barn favorite with a few charming quirks.

“We didn’t aspire for him to be as successful and solid as he has become,” Lange said about her Gunnatrashya son out of the Whiz N Tag Chex mare, Chics Graceful Whiz. “Romeo was purchased as a prospect to have fun. It goes without saying that the horse has achieved beyond our wildest dreams.”

“He’s a gentle soul,” Lyon added. “He’s got a great personality and really enjoys people. He’s also a Houdini at getting out of his halter! But there’s not a single person that I would not put on his back.”

“There isn’t a thing that horse would not do for you if he trusts you. He’s a unique individual. If he never shows again, we are content with that,” he said at last year’s AQHA World Championship in Oklahoma City. “He’s accomplished so much;

we don’t have any goals because he’s exceeded them all!”

Romeo isn’t the only high achiever in the Lyon Performance Horses barn. Last November, Lyon rode ChillinLikeAVillain to a world record – 243.50 points – in Junior Ranch Trail at the 2024 AQHA World Championship Show. Before setting a 240 point-record in Senior Ranch with Romeo, after setting the prior record (238 points) the year before in Oklahoma City on Gunner Got Out.

Fans of ranch riding may dub Lyon “king” but it is his relentless pursuit of perfection that has kept this apex performer roaring to the top of podiums. Including – as Championship Show spectators at World Equestrian Center – Ocala remember – simultaneously scoring a top slot with more than one good horse.

“This is the ‘ranchiest’ we’ve been at a horse show,” he said after showing through a rainstorm and still scoring a cowboy-sized hat trick at The Championship Show 2024. Ultimately, Lyon took home three featured class wins in Ranch Riding before finishing his trip to Ocala with a tie for first in the $35,000 Open Ranch Riding Challenge.

Competing in the WEC Grand Arena alongside 29 top-tier professionals, Lyon was his toughest competition, tied for first aboard both Romeo and Monte Freeman’s four-year-old, Nic The Whiz (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Hollynic).

Looking ahead, he’s holding a steady rein. “When I was younger, the highs of success were HIGH and

the lows of disappointment were LOW. It took awhile to realize neither emotion lasts forever.”

“From a training standpoint, I view each horse in my barn as a puzzle to be solved. I love the challenge of putting the right pieces together. I enjoy producing a quality product for the public and providing superior service to my clientele. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing my customers happy with their experience.”

Score one for worn out chaps.

Setting the Foundation for Future Stars

Equitation riders have multiple goals throughout their show season, but one championship class has undoubtedly risen to the top of the bucket list for those aged 18 and under: The World Equestrian Center (WEC) Premier Equitation Cup Championship sets the standard with stunning courses, primetime scheduling and incredible prizes. All these factors and more

provide a stunning backdrop to a class that showcases the skills of the best junior equitation riders as they begin their show season.

Each year, in addition to the competitive 3’6” opportunity at WEC – Ocala, the WEC Medal Final at WEC – Wilmington in November at the 3’-3’3” and 2-2’6” heights makes it easy for riders to experience a finals-like atmosphere in a format

suited to their riding level. Both championships continue to meet their intention of producing young riders who go on to further success in the sport.

The focus is to build championship athletes.

Originally held at World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio, the WEC Premier Cup moved to WEC – Ocala in 2021, where it takes place in February. It has seen some of the biggest names in the sport ascend to the top of the podium and go on to successful collegiate careers, professional riding jobs and even representing the U.S. in international show jumping championships.

The first WEC Premier Cup 3’6” Equitation winner in Wilmington, Olivia Darnell, catch-rode a horse in the class and ended up taking home her own new car, a tradition that has continued for every winner of the WEC Premier Cup ever since.

The class’s original format in 2019, which included an opening

over fences round, a flat phase and a second jumping round for the top competitors, has continued throughout the years, but judges have the discretion to test their choice of riders, such as in 2024 when the leading four riders swapped horses.

Izzy Beisel of Goshen, Ohio, shows regularly at WEC – Wilmington with her family and her father’s training business, David Beisel Stables. She competed in the 2019 WEC Premier Cup in Wilmington and finished fourth. She had the same placing in 2024 and returned in the top 12 in 2025 on her brother’s grand prix horse, Triskel de Kerliven. “She had a seasoned horse this year that had been all over the world, so that certainly helped,” said

David Beisel. “I think that's a pretty impressive atmosphere for a young horse to go in there and jump around. It’s an incredible development opportunity for the kids to get them ready for bigger and better things down the road. It quickly became a hot event, and each year, it seems to grow and be more prestigious.”

WEC – Wilmington established its own equitation championship, the WEC Medal Final, in 2022, where winners take home a GOTRAX

Scooter and the winning trainers receive $500. The WEC Medal Final has no age limit, so adult equitation riders can participate, and the 2’-2’6” height can give pony equitation riders their first taste of a finals experience.

The 2024 WEC Medal Final winner, Elizabeth Rinehart of Westfield, Indiana, said, “Coming here and showing in the indoor really helped when we went to Medal Finals and Maclay Finals.”

When WEC – Ocala opened with its first winter circuit in 2021, the WEC Premier Cup was a major draw with nearly 60 entries.

their ASPCA Maclay National Championship win the previous fall, became the first Ocala winner to drive away with a car. Gibbs went on to a successful professional career after graduating from the junior ranks.

In addition to the car for the winning rider, WEC awards $100,000 in trainer bonuses to the top four riders’ trainers. WEC also presents a prize to a WEC Premier Cup trainer outside of the top four in a random drawing.

Gibb’s trainer, Stacia Madden, commented, “It was a unique experience. When I see things like this that are good for the sport, it is important to me to back it up as best I can by supporting it.”

Seventeen-year-old Skylar Wireman flew in from Bonsall, California, to take the top spot in the 2022 edition of the WEC Premier Cup, while Kate Egan of Glen Gardner, New Jersey, claimed victory in 2023 when the class was held in the indoor arena due to inclement weather. Egan was named to the National Collegiate Equestrian Association All-Championship team in 2024, riding for Texas A&M University. Wireman successfully competed in the FEI Jumping World Cup Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the same year.

The WEC Premier Cup moved back outside to the WEC Grand Arena for 2024 and was a showcase of emerging talent. Eleanor Rudnicki

of Conroe, Texas, rode Favorite Edition Z to the win and was trained by the team at North Run, including Missy Clark, John Brennan and Maggie Gampfer.

For the second year in a row, Favorite Edition Z helped his rider secure the blue ribbon in the 2025 WEC Premier Cup, as JJ Torano, also trained by North Run, won in 2025. The 14-year-old phenom, who captured the 2024 Dover Saddlery/ USEF Hunter Seat Medal Final, won out of a class of 75 entries. In training Torano, North Run once again claimed the largest share of the $100,000 in prize money for trainers of the top three finishers.

“It was amazing,” acknowledged Clark. “That doesn't happen very often. Nobody matches what WEC gives out in the prize department and it's hugely recognized and very much appreciated.”

Clark has trained winners of the country’s biggest equitation finals for decades and she remarked that the WEC Premier Cup “feels like a true championship, which it is.”

“Because you have to qualify for it throughout the year, it is something our students aim for,” she continued. “The courses are always fabulous and challenging, and the

jumps are like nothing else. The venue is unparalleled and offers a different atmosphere than the norm, which is great.”

The WEC Premier Cup and WEC Medal Final course designer, Bobby Murphy, creates beautiful new jumps every year. “We aim to showcase what World Equestrian Center has to offer,” he stated. “Highlighting these talented athletes under the lights in a unique atmosphere is the goal, so they can carry forward this experience in the future when they represent their country at other major championships. The focus is to build championship athletes.”

As the WEC Premier Equitation Cup Championship in Ocala continues to grow in prestige and influence and the WEC Medal Final in Wilmington holds a special place

for riders of all ages and levels, both equitation championships have been firmly established as launchpads for the next generation of equestrian stars. With a blend of elite competition, world-class facilities and a focus on rider development, the classes offer far more than just ribbons and prize money — they provide young athletes with the tools, confidence and stage to pursue their highest aspirations in the sport. Whether it’s stepping into collegiate programs, joining professional ranks or representing the U.S. on the world stage, the equitation championship alums from these events are proving they’re not just a goal — they are a gateway to greatness.

spotlight, grooms are the constant, providing the care, attention and expertise that keep equine athletes performing at their best.

At shows, like the ones at World Equestrian Center, they prepare horses for competition, manage schedules and ensure everything runs smoothly. It is a role that requires patience, knowledge and an unwavering commitment to horse welfare.

Being a groom is more than just a job; it is a calling shaped by a deep love for horses and an unwavering commitment to their care. "A groom is a voice for the horse,” said Jenni Giannini, FEI-groom and barn manager for U.S. jumper rider Nick Dello Joio’s Wembley Farm. "Our job is to understand and convey what the animal needs and wants.

A CAREER OF PASSION AND PURPOSE

Without grooms, horses wouldn’t receive the care they need to perform at their best, and the results in the ring would not be the same. A well-cared-for horse is a happy, healthy athlete and behind every great performance is a groom who made it possible.

I’ve been coming to Ocala for more than 20 years. This was the last missing piece: to not only have international shows here but also to have an event like this. It’s not only me – I think the world is amazed to see Longines League of Nations™ held at such a great venue.
