“Mom! Can we go sell Girl Scout cookies around the neighborhood?” they said. Do their bodies even register temperature? It’s 20 degrees outside! AND threatening to rain.

“On one condition,” I said, thinking I’m about to outsmart them. “I get to stay in the car.”

Exactly what they wanted to hear. See, they were 7 and 9 when we had this conversation and nothing would please them more than the appearance that their mom isn’t walking them all around. They think they’re too old for that.

Of course, I’m thinking about how much more creepy it looks for a car to very slowly trail two cute little girls around the neighborhood. I digress...

As it turned out, it was perfect. As cookie mom, I had “the mother load” of Girl Scout goodness in the back of our Subaru. That little red wagon of theirs was empty by around the 5th house.

Then, when the sleet began to drizzle, we were able to rescue the remaining inventory before they became soggy. Of course, the wagon wouldn’t fit in the cargo area with all those cookies so the girls ran home, laughing hysterically and catching snow on their tongues.

Two cups of cocoa later, back to normal and the families of Hearthstone were stocked for winter.

Why can’t we just stop the clock?

Tomorrow they’ll call home from college to share the news that their beau has proposed and our chests will bang with anxiety as we pretend we’re excited for them. Really we just want them hauling that little Radio Flyer red 6

wagon around the neighborhood again. Oh well, we’ll just have to adjust and remember how excited we were when we married.

January is bridal season and producing an issue about love couldn’t be more joyful. Getting to know the couples in these pages was great fun and we are thrilled they allowed us to share their nuptials with you. Enjoy a bit of eye candy.

Also special thanks to Katie and Hampton Parr, proprietors of the Stratton House Bed and Breakfast and decedents of popular Collierville photographer, Bessie Dean Parr. Their love story started in the darkroom of Katie’s father, sorting through a stack of glass negatives that were a gift from a beloved neighbor. Where that led young Katie is a wonderful tale.

We’re also excited to share the news of a fresh endeavor here at Webz - the addition of two new divisions. Join us February 5 as we share our new art gallery, Webz Art, and do a little shopping in our stationary store, Webz Ink. I’ll give you one guess who peddled the mountains of Pine Hill in Enterprise, Mississippi selling Girl Scout Cookies... me.

So, friends, open your doors and your wallets to those sweet entrepreneurial little girls. Who knows what they’ll attempt in their lifetime using the skills they develop hauling that little red wagon around?

January 8- March 5 A groundbreaking exhibit about the slaves and slaveholders who worked and resided at a distinctive plantation in Tennessee. The exhibit, Slaves and Slaveholders of Wessyngton Plantation, looks at the lives of both the enslaved African Americans and their white owners on the 13,000 acre plantation in Robertson County, Tennessee. It was organized by the Tennessee State Museum with support from the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area.

Through first and third person accounts, the exhibit will reconstruct the lives of several enslaved people, giving them names, faces, and the details of what happened to them before, during, and after the Civil War.

of herself that she was struggling to let go.” Her friend, Carla Vance, was weathering the life-altering storm of breast cancer, gradually losing her hair during

chemotherapy treatment. “I just wanted to use the gifts

God gave me - art, compassion, friendship - and restore a part of my friend who was hurting so terribly.”

Young Katherine Broer, for an 8th grade school project, carefully processed a small selection of the old glass negatives stored in her father’s darkroom.

They had been a gift from his friend and neighbor, Dr. William Dean Parr.

Three generations of Parr dentists practiced in the rooms above the storefronts along the west side of the square (currently Hewlett and Dunn). Patients would watch commerce from the single window that looked out over Confederate Park, helping the time to pass during their dental visits.

Bessie Dean Parr, the wife of Dr. J.C. Parr, began a flourishing photography business in the same space, recording Collierville life during the early twentieth century.

Portrait photography demonstrates the broad culture and ethnic diversity of the town while exterior shots became a lasting record of its history.

Bessie and J.C. had two children, Mary Elizabeth Parr (born May 28, 1901) and William Dean Parr (born exactly two years later). The children were frequent subjects as Bessie refined her art.

The studio closed around 1915 when the Parrs moved to Rogers Springs, Tennessee. She would

occasionally visit, was honored as the oldest living member of Collierville Baptist Church in 1953 and died in 1960 at the age of 85.

The glass plate negatives of her photography were stored in open ammunition boxes in a family barn.

DECADES PASSED.

The glass plates sat, weathering the climate, when Dr. William Parr, Bessie’s son, gave them to Rick Broer, knowing he had an interest in antique photography. Rick hauled the boxes to his darkroom. He and his wife, Jill, periodically cleaned and sorted them. He would sometimes print a few but there were so many, the task repeatedly took a back seat to the rigors of family life.

Rick and Jill’s daughter, Katherine, became curious about the negatives as she grew and, in the 8th grade at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, decided to make them the subject of a history project. Her father taught her how to process them but still the enormity of the project forced it to be shelved for several more years.

In 2006, Katie moved back to Collierville and took six months off from work to finally see the project through to completion. She organized, developed, and digitized the photographs into a book, “Glimpses of the Past, Bessie Dean Parr’s Photography of Turn of the Century Collierville, Tennessee.”

Through the process, she and Hampton Parr, Bessie Parr’s great-grandson, courted and eventually married. The would have never guessed their paths would intersect in such a lovely way.

THE STRATTON HOUSE IS REBORN

At 198 Natchez Street, century-old magnolias frame the lovely historic Stratton House. It was built in 1859 by Dr. Asa Stratton, a Collierville merchant, physician, land investor and one of the town’s first aldermen. The home passed through the Stratton family, ultimately inherited by Elizabeth Parr.

Elizabeth passed away in the home in 2011, 103 years after being born there. Dr. Stratton’s great-great-great-grandson, Hampton, was the named heir. He and Katie embarked on a restoration journey to polish the old Collierville jewel into an inviting Bed & Breakfast. They paused construction on December 12, 2015 to be on the Contemporary Club’s annual holiday tour of homes and for our bridal cover photo shoot.

As of publication date, the Stratton House Bed & Breakfast is expected to welcome guests beginning in March 2016. The first scheduled wedding reception is to celebrate the nuptials of Brent Sutherland (of Brandon, MS) and Ann Elizabeth Miller (daughter of Lisa and Donnie Miller of Collierville).

Each cake I design and bake for any bride is my main focus. When the Wilson wedding planner called for an appointment I met

them with the same attention that I give

anyone who walks through my door. Cakes receive my full attention and detail no

matter who the customer is. Some cakes are just a bit more lavish then others.

DID YOU GET TO MEET THE PRINCES?

No. But I understand Prince William had two pieces of the 6 tier wedding carrot cake.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CAKE AND FROSTING COMBINATION?

Oh, there’s so many! I particularly enjoy seasonal

cakes. Summer: coconut milk with white chocolate

mouse and fresh strawberries. Winter: carrot and spice cake with homemade pumpkin butter. For

wedding: yellow buttercake with toasted pecans and mocha Bavarian cream.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE JOB SO FAR?

I love doing animals! There was a turkey cake, the Hunted Fox cake, a Kung Fu Panda cake...anything that allows me to convey an expression that

the customer will react passionately about. I’ve

designed cakes for Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others.

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO BRIDES THAT ARE ORDERING THEIR CAKES?

1. It’s always good to know the total number of

people attending the reception. Seventy-five to 85%

of invitees will show, so base the size of the cake on the number of invites.

2. Do not bring a lot of people to the cake sampling/ design meeting. The bride deserves to have the

main objective of what she wants, and sometimes too many opinions can alter the final outcome.

3. Always feel comfortable with your choice of

baker. Have complete confidence with who you will be working with.

Each cake is a challenge, because each cake

is unique to the bride/couple. There’s always

something for me to aspire, grow, and challenge myself. I’m truly blessed.
