There are a few aspects of life that have the power to completely wash away the grime of a tough day: a new puppy (or a sage old hound), belly laughs with friends, rolling down grassy hills with kids... showers, crisp sheets, crickets. The challenge is to stop and see... I mean really see the life around you. To put down your phone, step out into the sunlight and open. your. eyes. Hazard a grass stain or two. This month I met some wonderful families from the Goddard School and had just a taste of their experience moving to a foreign land. They spoke excitedly about cupcakes, friendly people and green space. I challenge you to get outside of your own head for just a minute and let that resonate. We live in the most amazing country. Independence Day is coming up and we’ll proudly wave our flags and sip lemonade while watching the fireworks. We hold hands and lean into our faith on National Day of Prayer. We can’t imagine any other life. But for these families, while they certainly miss aspects of their home country, all spoke of loving this land and had gratitude that their kids could thrive here. I’m grateful that my kids get to learn from them and experience the multicultural magic that happens when they’re together.

I had a tough day recently. I did something I hadn’t done in a long long time and it completely repaired my weary soul. I went for a walk at Johnson Park. I’ve been visiting the park for over a decade but this time was different. At the boardwalk loop near the Wolf River, I walked down the steps onto the dirt path. You see, that day I had proofed Sarah’s spread about Collierville’s Parks and saw something I hadn’t seen before - expansive trails that go far beyond the boardwalk. I must have wandered around for an hour greeting other hikers, petting their dogs, watching wildlife and freaking out over a snake (I hate snakes). When I returned, guess what? Tough day was gone. It was over and I was ready to shift my perspective to the idea that this journey is actually a wild ride in a strange land. Are you ready for a radical shift in perspective? Step off the boardwalk and enjoy the next thousand miles.

Start Saving Today for
Another school year is drawing to a close. If you have young children, you might be planning for their summer activities. But you also might want to look even farther into the future — to the day when your kids say “goodbye” to their local schools and “hello” to their college dormitories. When that day arrives, will you be financially prepared to pay for the high costs of higher education? Consider this: For the 2013–2014 academic year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was $18,391 for an in-state student at a four-year public college or university, and $40,917 for a private school, according to the College Board. And these costs may well be considerably higher by the time your children enter college. Of course, these are just the “sticker” prices; some families pay less, thanks to grants and tax benefits, such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit. Still, you may encounter some hefty college bills down the road. But college is still a good investment in your child’s future. Over an adult’s working life, an individual with a bachelor’s degree can expect to earn, on 12

average, nearly $1 million more than someone with only a high school diploma, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So you’re saving for a good cause. Unfortunately, you may not be saving enough — or you might not be making the most of your savings. To save for college, more parents use a general savings account than any other method, according to Sallie Mae’s How America Saves for College 2014 study. These types of accounts carry two significant drawbacks: They typically earn tiny returns and they offer no tax advantages. However, you do you have some attractive college-funding vehicles available, one of which is a 529 plan. Your 529 plan earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. But 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility. A 529 plan offers other benefits, too. For one thing, the lifetime contribution
limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, some plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. And a 529 plan is flexible: If your child decides against college or vocational school, you can transfer the unused funds to another family member, tax and penalty free. While a 529 plan is a popular choice for college savings, it is not the only option available. You also might want to consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a Coverdell account, but it does offer more flexibility in investment choices than a 529 plan. Your children may be young today, but, before you know it, they’ll be packing their bags for college. So, no matter which college savings vehicles you choose, put them to work soon.

Collierville celebrates 25 years of Sunset on the Square starting June 2nd. The event started small in 1991 as a way for the new Main Street organization to gather members of the community. Since 2000, Main Street Collierville has hosted 120 summer concerts, drawing over 200,000 people to the Historic District, an average of 1,700 per concert. Now people from all over the Memphis region flock to our town square to enjoy incredible live music, delicious food, and that sense of community that makes Collierville so special. The series has won many awards over the years including “Best Family Venue” by Memphis Most and “Top 20 Event” by the Southeast Tourism Society. Hinton Park
The Collierville town square is the trademark of the town. It features turn of the century walkways, cast iron fences, an antique style clock, the Collierville Depot, executive train car, log cabin, caboose, and charming bandstand.
The 67.39 acre park offers a 1.4 mile walking trail with connections to the Collierville Greenbelt system. The park has a 4-field baseball complex with concessions, 5 multi-purpose fields, picnic facilities, 6 lighted tennis courts, pavilion, and 2 playgrounds. It is also the home of the Harrell Performing Arts Theatre, Community Center, and Department Administration offices.
Hinton Park was dedicated in 2015 and is on 108.43 acres. It enhances the site’s natural beauty and fashions a place for the community to gather, interact, and have fun. Currently the site has a state of the art playground, beautiful pond, walking trails, picnic facilities, future plans for an entertainment venue and much more. The master plan is intentionally flexible to allow for the Collierville community to incorporate various new park features, activities, and events.

My children attended the Goddard School (Pre-K) and now SyCamore Elementary. When Ella’s kindergarten class picture came home I realized: she has a huge advantage in life. According to 2010 census data, Collierville’s population is 79.7% white, 10.9% African American, 7.1% Asian, 2.6% Hispanic or Latino. While that is consistent with popular opinion, this school photo suggested otherwise. Ella was among a deeply diverse group of friends. Census data can be misleading: First, 2014 data was not available and Collierville has changed substantially in the last 6 years. We have major industries (such as FedEx) that employ thousands of people, many of whom are on international work visas and may be residents for only a short period. Additionally, census participation is voluntary and many families may not feel comfortable reporting their family’s origin. by Amber Lombardo

A World of Friends Last year I attended SyCamore Elementary’s We Are the World program, a day that welcomes students to parade before the student body in their native dress. My children were able to see their friends in beautiful clothing, letting go of their “Americanized” fashion for this multicultural celebration. They were astonished, as was I. When I visit the girls for lunch, I look around at their friends’ food and adore the fact that my girls can say they’ve seen tabouleh and aren’t afraid to try some. I sat, mouth wide open, during the spelling bee as the proctor delivered English words I’d never heard and these students - whose primary language is Swedish, Hindi or Arabic - dominated the
contest and ultimately won. At the Collierville Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony, I watched as Ella sang three of the Chorus Lion’s five songs in other languages, one of which was Swahili. As a parent, there is something magical about seeing your child explore other cultures and appreciating that this world is filled with such a vast array of customs, dress and beliefs. 21% of the student body at SyCamore are English Language Learners (ELL). The ESL (English as a Second Language) program represents only a sample of the vast number of languages spoken here. Below is this year’s enrollment along with the number of students who speak each language.

without regard for skin color. As our children wander out into a competitive marketplace, the key for them to thrive in an ever-changing world is early exposure to cultural acceptance. Living in a town that embraces a diverse population multiplies my civic pride. Do you know the difference between diversity and multiculturalism? Most children do. Diversity is the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization. A business, school or organization can tout diversity by recruiting people of different races and backgrounds, but it doesn’t always translate into tolerance or acceptance. Multiculturalism, on the other hand, is the co-existence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, cultural assumptions and values, patterns of thinking, and communicative styles. At The Goddard School, we embrace multiculturalism and it exists naturally. Why? Because every parent, regardless of race or background, wants the best educational experience for his or her child. And what is May/June 2016
beautiful is that every child in our multicultural environment spends his or her early years learning and accepting that children their age come in all shapes, sizes and colors with different accents, customs, ideas, clothing, family dynamics and beliefs. Children learn about others and learn to form their own ideas. When you are one, three or five years old, it doesn’t matter what your parents do or where you came from or what color your skin is. Toddlers and preschoolers are more interested in universal values like whether or not another child is nice to me, whether he or she shares her toys or wants to play with me. These social skills cut across cultural differences. In fact, cultural differences are simply one of many aspects that children learn about and accept in others and it comes naturally. At our preschool, we have over 25 countries represented, with about 35 percent of our families speaking a language other than English at home. In any classroom, there can be children from the US, China, Korea, India, Guatemala, Ukraine, Italy, Ireland, Argentina, England, Mexico, Colombia, Germany, Jordan, Switzerland, Australia, Palestine or South Africa. Our families cover a multitude of occupations, including doctors, veterinarians, pilots, teachers, pharmacists, small business owners, and business people from FedEx, International Paper, Medtronic, Baptist, Methodist and more. Children share their cultural traditions throughout the year and at the lunch table when they discuss what their friends are eating. They laugh together when dancing to a Mandarin song, counting in Spanish or signing the
alphabet. They learn about others’ ideas when they are building a robot together or doing a science experiment or listening to their teacher read a book. They may hear another parent drop off their child and say goodbye in Tamil, Hindi, Spanish, German, Mandarin, Arabic or another language. The only bias that children encounter is from the adults in their lives, but the children already have it figured out. My friend is not “Black” or “White” or “another color.” My friend is nice and likes dinosaurs or blocks or painting like I do. Children embrace differences in others and simply ask “Why?” or “What is that?” or a million other questions when they want to understand something. The benefits of children growing up in a multicultural environment are infinite, but some of the most notable benefits include: a natural appreciation of differences in others, better and more comprehensive ideas when collaborating on activities, a natural curiosity to learn and explore that carries with them throughout their lives, the ability to learn multiple languages easily and strengthen their cognitive skills and stronger social (or people) skills. Growing up “multicultural” sets up a child for success in life.

nandini & Haasini Kondisetti COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: India PARENTS: Ramakrishna and Laxmi Swetha Kondisetti “Our favorite is southern fried chicken!,” said Laxmi. “We miss mangoes the most. We would literally eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner if permitted.” Moving to the states was a great challenge for this couple with young girls, Nandini (6) and Haasini (3). They moved here from India before having their children in Germantown. The family speaks both Telugu and English at home. Rama and Laxmi both moved to the U.S. to pursue Master’s degrees at the University of Memphis. Upon graduation, Rama went to work as a Senior Web Software Engineer at ALSAC/St. Jude and Laxmi is a Senior Technical Analyst at FedEx. The family is Hindu. In addition to their traditional celebrations they also enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas as well.
stepHanie & sCarlett stolfa COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Czech Republic PARENTS: Petra and Martin Stolfa Seven year old Stephanie is a little camera shy but little sister, Scarlett (4), is all smiles as she turns upside-down at the base of the slide. Their father, Martin, has worked for Hilton Worldwide for over 20 years. The couple left the Czech Republic a little over 10 years ago, making moves to Greece, Dubai and, ultimately, Collierville, Tennessee. “Great schools, community, and best of all, really nice people everywhere! So different from Czech! Here you can talk while waiting in Kroger. In Prague nobody would be that nice!” said Petra, the girls’ mother. In their home, the couple speaks Czech though the girls speak English. “Mostly what we miss most is beer... and having little kiosks on every corner. Walking we miss the most - here you need a car! I don’t need a car at all in Prague.” The family loves to frequent Dyer’s Cafe on the square and Petra quips about taking cooking classes to learn to brine and roast Thanksgiving turkey. They “loooooove” cupcakes and comment that they don’t have them in Czech. 32

Zoe Barrentine MOTHER’S COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: China PARENTS: Brandon and Lenny Barrentine Three year old Zoe Barrentine is a social media sensation in China. When she and her parents last visited, fans rushed them on the streets and waited at their hotel lobby with gifts (pictured below). Some drove from other provinces to meet them. “Every day our phones are burning up with people sending messages asking for more videos about our life in the USA,” said Brandon. “It is unreal.” Meipai.com is the primary platform responsible for launching them to celebrity status. Many of the videos feature Brandon as a loving and involved dad, a very rare occurrence in China where caring for children is strictly a woman’s role. One such video of a toddling Zoe crying for her father as he walks out the door to leave for work has been viewed over 1.3 billion times. The videos also depict a lush and green suburban Collierville that is a stark contrast to the congestion and overpopulation common in China’s cities. “Life is different for her - huge cities with 8 to 15 million people, food available at all hours, cities that don’t sleep,” says Brandon. “The visa process was hard and it changed my views on immigration,” he continued. Lenny’s story is a fairy tale for a young Chinese woman. She grew up in Jiangxi province in southeastern China with the name Guo Liming, so poor that she first sampled an apple at the age of 13. She managed to study English in Ningbo, became a professionally trained singer from the Beijing Contemporary Music Academy (China’s version of our Juliard) and ultimately met Brandon as a part of a language practice program. He is the 3rd generation and President of BTE Racing, a U.S. manufacturing company for the drag racing industry. As we shoot photos for the story at Hinton Park, Lenny occasionally pulls out her phone and appears to be snapping photographs. I later see why. Their diverse offerings and commitment to service in the community make each school unique for our town. Collierville’s renowned public schools are under the recently developed Collierville Municipal School system, and feature five elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. The new Collierville High School is slated to open for the 2017-2018 school year. With approximately 8,000 students overall, Collierville Schools continue to grow and expand to accommodate the ever-growing town. Bailey Station’s 815 students have a sense of family and community, where parents and visitors always feel welcome. The faculty and staff believe in forging a bond with their students that continues throughout their time at BSE. Bailey Station provides challenging academics while keeping the wonder and joy that makes school fun! In 2012, Bailey Station was named a Reward School, and has received Level 5 School status in the State of Tennessee for the past six years. Many teachers have received recognition as district and regional teacher of the year winners. Bailey Station offers students Cub and Bear Chorus, Percussion, Yearbook, Chess Club, Abacus and Singapore Math, STEM Club, Violin, Tutoring, Run Club, and Student Council to encourage student involvement. Bailey Station encourages a sense of community, and as such, the students commonly frequent nursing homes as well as enjoying celebrations for our veterans. The students collect food, collars, leashes, and toys for the Collierville Animal Shelter. Bailey Station is proud to support MakeA-Wish Foundation, St. Jude, and various members of the community who are in crisis. By reaching out and showing support to others, Bailey Station students are taught the importance of giving back to the community.
Collierville Elementary is truly a neighborhood school. The first of the five elementary schools in Collierville, CES opened its doors in 1960. In addition to serving multiple generations of Collierville residents, CES is proud to serve a diverse population of 799 students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. CES understands the importance of developing the whole child, demonstrated in their commitment to the arts and physical education. CES students and faculty have been recognized in a variety of ways, including art contests, school beautification contests as well as local and regional academic contests. Collierville Elementary has consistently received straight A’s in achievement on the state report card. We earned a level 5 rating overall in 2014 and a level 5 rating in growth for literacy last year, the highest available. CES offers its students a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including STEM Club, Robotics Club, Baking Club, Yearbook, K-Kids, Dragon Squad, Summer STEAM Camp, Outdoor Club, and Chess Club. Collierville Elementary partners with Carrier Corporation one Saturday each fall for “Green Apple Day of Services,” in an effort to beautify the school grounds. Crosswind is dedicated to the education of its 790 students. From the Plant Manager who raises the flag each morning to instill patriotism and the teachers who provide before-school activities and tutoring to the outstanding faculty, staff, parents and students, all have worked hard to make Crosswind a state of Tennessee Achievement School for four of the last five years. Crosswind is truly a place where children come first. Crosswind’s various awards include winning the Tennessee Summer Reading event, ranking in the top ten for its recycling efforts, and coming in third in the state for BoxTops for Education collection. Crosswind recently raised $46,000 to purchase Promethean boards to enhance the school’s technology. Crosswind encourages its students to participate in at least one of its many extracurricular activities, including Chorus, Chess Club, Roots & Shoots, Club Invention, Camp Invention, Fuel Up to Play 60, Safety Patrol, Student Council, and STEM Club. To give back to its community, Crosswind students participate in fund raisers to support the Collierville Food Pantry, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, St. Jude, Smile Train, March of Dimes, Autism Speaks, the Downs Syndrome organization, and many more.
SyCamore Elementary values diversity by recognizing the unique characteristics of our families. The 750 students represent approximately 25 different countries from around the world. The “C” in SyCamore is capitalized to indicate that children are the heart of SyCamore. Since the 2013-2014 school year, SyCamore teachers have received approximately $16,000 in grants from local foundations to provide students with a better learning experience. The SyCamore librarian received the Innovative Library Media Award for outstanding achievement and contribution to the Lion’s Library program in 2013. In 2012, SyCamore Elementary was recognized by the USDOE as developing and implementing a Promising/Model ESL Program. SyCamore’s various extracurricular activities include Chorus Lion, STEM Club, Run Club, Roarin’ Reader Club, Battle of the Books, Reading Marathon Club, Student Leadership Team, and 5th grade peer tutoring. In the community, SyCamore Elementary’s 5th Grade APEX students participate in a service project where they “adopt” Schilling Gardens, a retirement senior living facility. The student body as a whole raises money for LeBonheur through Go Jim Go!, as well as supporting the Collierville Food Pantry and Kiwanis Club.

Tara Oaks Elementary School seeks to provide a safe, nurturing, orderly, enriching environment designed to promote academic excellence, develop respect for all individuals, and expand the personal interests and talents of its 700 students. To support the students’ learning abilities, every kindergarten through fifth grade teacher has a Promethean board in their classroom and each grade level has a computer lab on their hallway. Tara Oaks is the only school in Collierville to have received “Reward School” status for both student achievement and growth based on student test scores. Named a National PTA School of Excellence, Tara Oaks works hard to maintain strong parental partnerships to support the needs of each child. For the past five years, Tara Oaks has scored all As in achievement on the Tennessee State report card, the highest score possible. Tara Oaks was the first school in Collierville to offer its students a STEM club. In addition to STEM, the various extracurricular activities include Student Leadership team, Spelling Bee Team, Art Club, and Chorus. Tara Oaks strives to give back to the community in a variety of ways. Throughout the year, students participate in fund raisers for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, the Collierville Angel Tree, and the Collierville Food Pantry.

Collierville Middle students have many diverse opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities. Some of the clubs include Art Club, Band, Baseball, Basketball, Bible Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Golf, Harry Potter Club, Junior Engineering Club, Junior Beta, Lacrosse, Lego Club, and Yearbook. By almost any measure or category—ethnic, linguistic, academic, racial, socioeconomic—Schilling Farms represents perhaps the broadest student population imaginable. The 1,090 students are a microcosm of the larger society, making Schilling Farms —without a doubt—“a great place for growing up.” Schilling Farms offers nearly 60 extracurricular activities in the form of clubs, sports, performing groups, and service organizations. The goal is for every student to participate in at least one extracurricular, an easy feat considering that new activities are always being added. Just this year, Schilling Farms began offering baseball, boys soccer, fishing club, coding club, FIRST Tech Challenge, and the Technology Student Association. Philanthropy and public service are embedded in the Schilling Farms culture. Over the past two years, Schilling Farms students and faculty have donated $14,000 to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, $36,000 to Make-A-Wish of the Mid-South, and 8,600 canned goods to the Collierville Food Pantry.

The average ACT score at CHS is currently the second highest in the state of TN. Keeping plants looking their best can be difficult, especially in the hot summer months. Collierville is located in zone 7 which has a growing season from March to mid November. Summers are hot and dry and winters are mild and wet. Zone 7 has a long growing season and the opportunity to grow a wide variety of plants. May is the perfect time to plant perennials, warm weather annuals like begonias and caladium, and vegetables like tomatoes and cucumbers. Not only will your yard benefit from gardening, your mind and body will also benefit. Gardening is known to be a great stress reliever and good exercise. Get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors this summer by growing a beautiful and vibrant garden.

Purchase tomato plants that are 10-12 inches tall and a deep green color. Plant them in full sun and make sure they have something like a wooden stake to support them as they grow. Water your new tomato plants frequently until roots are established. Plant in full sun about 10-12 inches apart. Keep cucumbers watered; inconsistent watering will lead to bitter fruit. Since cucumbers grow on a vine, make sure they have somewhere to grow so the fruit will not touch the ground. Spray the vines with sugar water to attract bees and encourage the growth of more fruit

Plant okra in full sun about 3-4 feet apart. Water them frequently in the summer. After your first harvest of okra, remove the lower leaves to speed up the growing process.

Denise is an oil painter whose focus is capturing the light and nature in our surroundings. Denise tends to sway towards impressionism instead of painting exactly what is in front of her, she wants to paint things the way she sees them at that specific moment. Denise has traveled the country and studied with many great modern artists of our time. Denise is also the founder of “Plein Air Memphis,” which promotes plein air painting in her area. “Being an artist makes me look at the world in terms of shape, value, and color. I am inspired by so many things in our world and appreciate the structures of our buildings as much as the trees and flowers in nature. When I paint, I try to not be influenced by the details or the name of objects, but the colors, values, shapes, and temperature of the surrounding light. “I have found that painting for me is as much about what I leave out in terms of detail as what I put in a painting. In this vein, I tend to choose subjects for my paintings that evoke memories and create visual interest, hopefully making a positive connection with the viewer. I strive to paint my interpretation of the scene rather than an exact replication of it. By limiting detail and using loose and impressionistic painting techniques, I encourage viewer participation to supply those details. Capturing the essence of a place or thing is what is of utmost importance to me as an artist.”

Just a few short months after her 40th birthday in 2012, Monica was diagnosed with stage IV salivary gland cancer. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, she was pronounced cancer-free in July 2013. Monica thought she could go back to her “normal” life. Unfortunately, she soon realized that the cancer journey does not end just because treatment has ended. Monica still has to deal with many physical and emotional side effects from the cancer diagnosis. Monica had always considered herself to be crafty and had dabbled in scrapbooking, sewing, cross stitching, knitting and such through the years, but the only formal art training she had was Art I at Germantown High School. In late 2014, Monica discovered art journaling and mixed media painting, and started taking various online art classes to learn more about these techniques. Her passion grew very quickly. Monica especially loves exploring layers of color, texture and whimsical subject matter. Monica grew up in Germantown and now lives in Bartlett with her husband and two daughters, Maggie and Molly. She recently became the treasurer of the newly formed Friends of Gilda’s Club Memphis, a group working to create a place in Memphis where men, women, and children with any type of cancer can come together with friends and family for free support while learning to live with cancer. Monica is donating 10% of her sales from the exhibition to the Friends of Gilda’s Club Memphis.
DanielleSierra Danielle Sierra is a visual artist from Avenal, California
currently working out of Memphis, Tennessee. She received her
Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting at California State University Fresno.
She has participated in 17 group shows and has been
featured in 4 solo shows from California to Tennessee. In 2009, she received “Best in Show” at her CSU Fresno Senior student
showcase, “Utopia”. She was awarded for a painting exhibited at the annual “Pink Show” at the Chris Sorenson Gallery in Fresno, California in 2011. She received an Honorable Mention in the
“If I Can Dream” exhibit held at the Memphis Brooks Museum
of Art in 2013. She was also selected by the Morton Museum of

a group show celebrating Latino artists working in the South
titled “Mi Sur/My South,” held at Crosstown Gallery in Memphis, Tennessee. Most recently she was featured in “Estamos Aquí/We Are Here,” a group exhibition of Latino artists from around the world at the Nashville Library Gallery.
“Conceptually my art focuses on being a visual language for
my generation. I use the ever constant human figure speaking
to various ethnicities in that we are all created in the image of
God. I then combine the figure with organic imagery usually in
the form of flora and sometimes pop culture references from my childhood filtered through biblical themes. It’s a contemporary kind of graceful quirk that attempts to speak to a modern day about unchanging truths.”
