2021 Leadership President Victor Buchholz, AIA Looney Ricks Kiss President Elect Ferran Espin, AIA HBG Design Secretary Chase Percer, AIA HBG Design

I am honored to introduce you to the first edition of folio, an annual of current architecture and design. As you will see in these pages, West Tennessee architects and their creative teams are shaping the public and private spaces not only in Memphis, but around the country. Memphis has a unique legacy of artistic creation and collaboration - whether it be in music, food, medicine, or art. As Architects, we have a responsibility to continue and advance that legacy. The Architect’s position as chief collaborator seeks to bring together the community – our clients, construction, the public, government, finance, and ultimately the user of the space, to build in brick and steel lasting places of meaning. Thanks goes out to all those involved in the crafting of the work shown on these pages and for allowing us to be a part of your team. Enjoy! Victor Buchholz, AIA 2021 President, AIA Memphis

West Tennessee is a curious postage stamp of land. Situated along the Mississippi River, it is ripe with commerce, history, progress, and endless stories to tell. Her built environment has evolved over generations to elevate some of the world’s most notable musicians, culinary professionals, trades craftsmen, and more. Dig a little deeper, however, and you will find a community with undeniable scars caused by a world, at times, on fire. Engaging smart, thoughtful leaders to craft a more equitable and inclusive place is key to healing. The remarkable professionals at AIA are doing just that. Each morning these extraordinary individuals rise early and work late, imagining a world for us as it ought to be - and then orchestrating the time and talents of others to bring it to fruition. Honoring them in these pages has been a gift. Thank you, friends, for all you do, Amber Lombardo Executive Director, AIA Memphis

School Safety Design

Much of the public debate about school safety has focused on access to firearms & mental health services. Neither approach has progressed much over many years despite all-too-frequent tragedies. Architects can improve school safety through the power of design now.

Role of the Architect Partner with an architect to tackle the challenges that face your city. From smart, equitable, and sustainable growth strategies to energy conservation, resilience, and affordable housing, architects can help design solutions that address the diverse range of issues your city faces. Architects don’t just work on single projects. They’re community leaders, trusted advisors, and valuable partners who can help you make smart, informed decisions that can achieve the future you want for your city and save taxpayer dollars.

Where We Stand

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) works to advance our nation’s quality of life and protect the public’s health, safety and welfare, as it has done for 160 years. Each day AIA members across the country and throughout the world create the places where people live and learn, work, and play. We design hospitals that heal us and houses of worship that sustain us. We create next generation energy-saving buildings to make our communities healthier and safer. All the while, architects work with clients and allied design professionals and construction partners to improve the built environment in a $1 trillion sector that accounts for almost 6 percent of the economy. The following is a selection of numerous position statements released by the Institute.

2021

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

AIA, as part of the global community, champions a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion within the profession. Achieving this vision has a direct impact on the relevance of our profession and the world’s prosperity, health, & future.

Human activity is warming our climate to dangerous levels, and carbon is the primary culprit. Buildings contribute about 40% of that carbon. The harm that results affects us all but doesn’t impact us all equally. As authors of that environment, architects are crucial to addressing and mitigating the damage. AIA, the largest design organization in the world, is asking architects, design professionals, civic leaders, and the public in every community to join our efforts. Help us transform the dayto-day practice of architecture to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, and equitable built environment.

Climate Action

In the US alone, nearly 40% of greenhouse gases can be attributed to carbon produced by buildings. As a profession, we have the responsibility to prioritize and support effective actions to exponentially decelerate the production of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.

Sustainability

AIA has a long history promoting sustainability in architecture. From the publication of Environmental Design: Research & Practice in 1971 to the creation of the Committee on the Environment, COTE, in 1990 and connections to the Historic Resources Committee established in 1857, the Institute is a leader in sustainable design.

How Architects Can Improve America’s Infrastructure This is a pivotal moment for our nation’s infrastructure, and one group of experts can help us rebuild to succeed: Architects.

Infrastructure is the foundation of our society, and it’s both crumbling and contributing to global warming.

In the wake of the election, updating the infrastructure of the United States is vital for the country—and the world. The global built environment accounts for about 40% of annual fossil-fuel carbon-dioxide emissions (CO₂). Simultaneously, the American economy and infrastructure (schools, civic buildings, hospitals) need to be rebuilt.

Yet there is a solution: Architects.

40% of global CO₂ emissions come from buildings

75% of existing buildings must be renovated to meet 2050 emission standards

In 2003, architect Ed Mazria, FAIA, discovered that the built environment contributes almost half the world’s CO₂. The Global CO₂ Architects emissionscan by help sector good news? reduce this number to zero. 6% Other 23% Transportation

28% Building operations

Here’s how they’re drawing on principles like The American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) Framework for Design Excellence to help government leaders navigate the complexities of designing new infrastructure to improve the economy and the environment.

Recently, architects Julie Hiromoto, AIA, and Carl Elefante, FAIA, testified before Congress about how the United States needs to reduce building energy consumption. This includes retrofitting 54 billion square feet of existing commercial and institutional building stock.

Money saved by investing in infrastructure now

PER $1 SPENT

Using AIA principles, architects can help the nation’s leaders pinpoint the right codes and in grants to reduce costs Money saved by investing infrastructure now and protect the environment. Adopting model codes saves $11 Federal Mitigation Grants save $6 Private-sector building retrofit saves $4

The new Congress must act urgently to fund an infrastructure package that boosts the economy and addresses climate change, and architects need to be a part of the strategy. Working with architects is a winning solution, and it’s time for political leaders to meet the moment. Natural Hazard Mitigation Saves: 2019 Report

The American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architecture profession. With 95,000+ members and 200+ local, state, and national chapters, AIA is the largest, most influential network of architecture professionals in the world. We enhance members’ careers, their practice, and the architecture profession to drive positive change. aia

Todd Walker, FAIA Barry Alan Yoakum, FAIA archimania designs spaces and places that are authentic. We believe authenticity is rooted in an equitable design process that harnesses the many distinct voices within our studio, our clients, the communities and populations they serve, and the world around us. Our work overcomes regional bias of historic style and perceptions that great design comes at a higher price. Each solution we offer is unique, responding to context, scale and impact.
