A very warm welcome to our only Sunday raceday so our only opportunity to host the fabulous Sky Bet Sunday Series and the team from ITV. Seven competitive looking contests worth in excess of £250,000 in prize money combined with all the fun of the YorkMix Family Entertainment zones.
Today is a very special raceday for all the generations at York Racecourse, full of racing ponies, thoroughbred racehorses, mechanical racehorses, retired racehorses, meerkats, snakes, tortoises and two very famous hero pups! I hope you, your friends and family have a fantastic raceday at York.
The feature race is the £70,000 Listed Sky Bet Starman Garrowby Stakes at 4.30pm. An impressive winner over this Course and Distance in July, Elmonjed, returns for the Newmarket stable of William Haggas. Local opposition comes from Lethal Levi (Karl Burke), Grand Grey (Kevin Ryan) and Stormy Impact (Richard Fahey). Looking for betting clues, try the Racing Post Smart View analysis on p58&59 ; or pick up one of the free Quickcards that explain the trusted Timeform analysis in a more graphic manner
In terms of the attractions away from the track on offer today, I hope you can find time to visit the Racing Interactive Zone, Sublime Science Show or to see the Paw Patrol Pup Pup Boogie, all free and set in the picturesque surroundings of the Bustardthorpe Development, so under the Churchill Tyes Canopy. There is yet more fun based in our Entertainment “Big Top” Marquee in the middle of the course; Joe’s animal encounters, Meltdown and Diggerland, are just part of the fun and entirely free. For more details of all the extra entertainment today see pages 6&7. Remember the Clocktower Enclosure and Grandstand & Paddock enclosure is combined today so everyone is welcome to cross the track and enjoy the entertainment, racing and facilities in both areas.
A tip for County Stand Badgeholders is to watch the action from the Dante Suite on the second floor of the Ebor Stand; it has viewing seats as well as a bar, tote, toilets and more seating inside A further tip for all racegoers in the middle of the course –do come over to stand side and enjoy seeing the horses in the Parade Ring and all that is on offer in the wider stands and lawns– just cross by the thatched head on box (please leave your picnic in the left luggage facility).
Prior to the thoroughbred racing we are proud to host a leg of the Pony Racing Series, sponsored by Dragon Film Studios. York is delighted to welcome these ponies, young jockeys and their connections to the Knavesmire - who knows maybe they will return one day as professional pilots. The Bowen brothers, Hollie Doyle and Tom Marquand are among previous graduates.
Please be aware that the Government are due to send us all a test of an emergency alarm to our mobile phones at 3pm! Hopefully the runners in the second race will all safely be down at the start at this time and we can then get on with the racing action! After this second race, please come to the Winners Enclosure to show your appreciation for our Local Community Partner, Move the Masses, as they are presented with their King’s Award for Voluntary Services from Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, Johanna Ropner.
With the leaves beginning to turn, remember you can follow all the autumn action from major Flat racecourses, such as York as well as the big Jumps meetings at the likes of Cheltenham and Aintree, all on Racing TV Visit their website to see some great deals for joining the thousands of subscribers who already enjoy the action and expert analysis.
As always, our thanks to today’s sponsors, Sky Bet, David & Sue Ward, as well as the European Breeders’ Fund. Also, a special big birthday greeting to Malcolm Hanson and Jonathan Townsend, both with us today, both great long-time supporters of York.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy the racing and experience of this unique day in our season.
William Derby, Chief Executive and Clerk
York Racecourse wishes to express its thanks to this afternoon’s sponsors.

CHAMPAGNE LAWNS
NEXT GENERATION CANOPIES
Nine next generation canopies now stand proudly on the Champagne Lawns. Clever enough to let the grass grow beneath them, they should prove popular if we get a summer shower. For the October racedays the built-in heaters will allow racegoers to keep enjoying the fresh air Each one has a speaker, so the race commentary will come to your table
BUSTARDTHORPE END
SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT
Last August we were honoured when Her Majesty The Queen, our Royal Patron, opened this development to the South of the Knavesmire Stand. Check out the Churchill Tyres lawn & canopy, the Theakston and Guinness bars, as well as food outlets and a WIlliam Hill shop
MR MOWITALL
Joining the grounds team over winter were a trio of robotic mowers, one creatively named, Mr Mowitall. They are helping with the lawns and car parks, leaving the human talent better able to focus on the track itself
THE TEAM NEVER REST
Maintenance is key, if a little dull. Over 6,000 pints of paint have been used by the team and the Knavesmire Stand Roof has had extensive repairs, (it is nearly thirty years old!).
A LIVING FLOWER WALL
OPPOSITE THE MELROSE STAND
The flowers are petunia and petchoa, grown by Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty and his team, from seedlings in our greenhouses. That Insta moment now has real flowers behind it.
THE
BARS HAVE IT
Over the Winter a number of bars have been given a face-lift. There is a new Pink Gin & Cocktail Bar on the main Champagne Lawns, a second Guinness Bar near the Roberto Lawn, with a refreshed Kylie Minogue Wines Bar next door The fun murals from the Dublin based brand should make a good selfie
NEW ON THE MENU
Around the racecourse there are a lot of new choices. Perhaps the sweet treats of the Churros will follow your Nachos, both are now part of the Knavesmire Courtyard offering.
If you like spice, then the eateries on the ground floors of both the Knavesmire and Ebor Stands now serve our homemade Curry Club dishes.
Finger lickin’ chicken? Try the grills in either the Bustardthorpe End or the John Carr Terrace. Try the Rustic Pizza freshly baked at the Moët Roof Terrace.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL
We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.
The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.
FAQS
Is there accessible and blue badge parking?
Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?
Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies have a maximum of six passengers, and only one is wheelchair accessible and it’s a big site.
Can I bring a wheelchair?
Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted.
Can I bring somebody to help?
Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “companion comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or just ask the team today.
Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?
Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.
What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?
Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions, the team nearby have keys, or check that map from you know where.
Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?
Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.
Wheelchair height betting?
Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.
Can I bring my assistance dog?
Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?
Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Race Type:
Prize Money: £25,000
Age: 2
Stalls: Farside
We start the day off with a very valuable maiden contest, this race is limited to 2yo horses and is over the distance of a seven furlongs. The boys (colts) start with a higher basic weight than the girls (fillies) which explains the lighter burden for Secret History as the lone female All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund.
This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock. Perhaps the advice of our expert panel on the Winner’s Podium at 1.10pm will give you the answer.

Beaten only a neck on his introduction at Newmarket last month, despite being slowly away, CROWN OFFICE shaped with abundant promise and stepping up in trip looks like a good move for the son of No Nay Never. William Haggas’ colt gets the vote ahead of narrow Pontefract runner-up Delinquent and Secret History, who shaped well on debut herself when second at Newbury over this distance.

HOW MIGHT YOU SOLVE A BIG SPRINT HANDICAP?
THE SKY BET SUPER SUB SPRINT HANDICAP
This afternoon’s Sky Bet Super Sub Sprint Handicap looks a tricky betting proposition for even the most experienced of racegoers with a fiercely competitive field of 15 closely matched runners set to go to post. Whilst picking a lucky number or a meaningful name may produce the winner from time to time, a wiser approach would be to apply some straightforward methodology to finding the potential winner.
Narrowing down the field of 15 declared runners can prove easier than you think if you follow a few simple guidelines, to hopefully identify the winner of this and the other handicaps throughout the afternoon.
Before we start, it is important to understand what a handicap is. Once a horse has raced three times, they are given an official rating (often referred to as a handicap mark) by the British Horseracing Authority. This provides a numerical guide to each horse’s level of ability. Ratings usually start at around 40 for a modest performer with the mighty Frankel finishing his career rated a lofty 140. The ranking works essentially as an ability scale, so each time a horse runs this rating is adjusted either upwards for a good performance or downwards for a weaker effort, so that it reflects the horse’s most recent form.
Each of these rating points are meant to reflect 1lb in weight, so looking at today’s race, Bergerac - rated 92 - is considered 1lb “better” than Squealer who is rated 91. If these horses were to race carrying the same weight, then theoretically Bergerac should win as he is the better horse according to the handicapper. The handicap is therefore designed to create a level playing field and, in theory, if the handicapper was completely correct in his assessment, then all 15 runners would cross the line together. Of course, this is never the case so how do we separate those that might on a favourable mark ahead of the race?
Some horses may be improving quicker than the handicapper’s assessment, given a rise of just 4 or 5lb for their latest victory but in fact progressing further than that, so is ahead of their mark still. On the other hand, horses who continue to run without winning will see their rating come back down to a winnable mark on previous form, once again given a chance to get back into the winners’ enclosure. The process is to find which category each horse falls into.
Now we know what a handicap is and how it works, it is time to delve into the different factors to consider when searching for the winner. The winner is ultimately what we all want to find!
1) FORM
Here at York it often pays to side with horses in form and this is a Class 2 Handicap, meaning a high level of ability in the field. The likes of Vantheman and Silky Wilkie have a fair bit to prove arriving here on the back of poor runs. It is also important that horses look like they still have a bit of improvement left, and Dan Tucker falls into this category having finished second last time out at Pontefract, with the handicapper opting to leave him on an unchanged mark.
2) THE DRAW
Where a horse is drawn in the stalls can be an important factor, particularly in a sprint (such as this) as it helps to be able to best see your opponents, and this is perhaps one of the most debated topics in racing. However here at York, in recent seasons those drawn low to middle have often held the upper hand, with six of the last ten winners of this exact race drawn from one to five. The likes of King Of Stars, Air Force One and Vantheman could use this to their advantage.
3)
DISTANCE
Having a runner who has already shown their liking for a particular trip can be invaluable, especially over this minimum trip where speed is vital. Bergerac, Squealer, Dyonisos & King Of Stars have all won over today’s distance.
4)
GROUND
The ground, and its effect on each horse, is one of the most important, but often overlooked, factors when it comes to making a selection. In simple terms, different horses run better on different types of surfaces – some prefer a lightning quick surface whilst others run best when the mud is flying. Bergerac is one who will enjoy a quicker surface whilst Dyonisos previously won on a surface that was listed as heavy. Whereas Vintage Clarets has won on a variety of surfaces. So, make sure to check the weather and the ground description.
5)
YORK RECORD
“Horses for courses” is not a popular phrase by accident, especially here at York which has a knack at producing track specialists. There are four course winners in the field, namely Vintage Clarets, Bergerac, Air Force One and Rousing Encore, with the first two named horses the only ones to win over this distance at the track.
6) CONCLUSION
Following these simple rules has helped to narrow down the shortlist. AIR FORCE ONE appeals most from a favourable draw, he has also already won at the track this season and should be suited to underfoot conditions. The consistent course and distance winner Bergerac must always enter calculations in these big sprint handicaps whilst for those looking for a bigger-priced each-way selection, then Vantheman can round out the shortlist having now dropped below his last winning mark.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Now for the first handicap of the day, for 3yo+ horses, run over the unusual trip of five and a half furlongs. Designed for close competition, the handicapper is the independent assessor who rates horses on past performance seeking to get them crossing the line together, by handing out differing weights.
The best, on past performance, will be the highest rated, and so will carry the most weight – Alzahir carries the top weight today. Perhaps take a close-up look in the Parade Ring before they go to post.

CHILDREN At York Racecourse
Baby-Changing facilities are available in a purpose-built facility on the ground floors of both Knavesmire & Ebor stands, as well a signed area in the Clocktower Enclosure close to the turnstiles.
There is a wide range of many food and drink options for families and children. From fish ‘n’ chips in the new Roberto Pavilion. To an extensive sandwich selection and lasagne and chips in the County Stand at Eat Between Our Races. We welcome children in our main restaurants, and in the Gimcrack Restaurant we offer a half price option for under 12s covering both lunch and afternoon tea. Wherever you can buy food we also can provide juice for children, with water available from all the bars.
Our Parent and Toddler room, situated by the entry to the Melrose Stand lifts, allows parents and children some quiet time away from the hurly burly of the main raceday atmosphere. A microwave is provided for parents to warm children’s bottles and televisions provide coverage of racing whilst another shows cartoons. Some comfy chairs should help recharge the batteries.

A second handicap to solve, Your vital statistics are; 3yo+, rated up to 95, going two miles with top weight carried by Enemy. As they complete more than a circuit watch them pass the finish the first time or wander towards the 1f pole to get close to “the load”. So, pit your wits against the handicapper – as clues, look for C (has won at York) or D (has won over this distance) against the horse’s name, noting Gibside is one to carry both, here.

RACE DESCRIPTION
Our richest race today is a part of the Pattern pyramid (think divisions in football) which denotes the best contests, Listed (such as this), Group 3, Group 2, rising to Group 1. This means it is in the top 300 races in the land.
Open to three-year-old horses and older, the competitive edge is sharpened by the nuance that horses who have won this season in the top two divisions are excluded. Horses of the same age and sex start with the same weight, meaning Stormy Impact & Kassaya both start with the lowest amount being the 3yo fillies. You can see that difference between an older male contender such as Grand Grey and a male opponent of the same age, like Prince Of India. The heaviest weight is carried by Lethal Levi, who has an additional burden for winning a Listed race at Newmarket, earlier in the season. An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race

RACE DESCRIPTION
Another ticklish handicap to solve, your key factors are it is for 3yo+ horses over one mile and one furlong, however, in this instance, it is restricted to only fillies and mares.
The opposite way around to golf, the best on past performance, will be the highest rating number (though carrying number one saddlecloth), so will carry most weight; that is Zapphire today. The Press Selections board by the Parade Ring might provide a clue, or at least someone to blame

See page 76 for conditions of this race.
RACE DESCRIPTION
A final handicap, over the middle distance of a mile The key consideration here is the rider, as all of them are still apprentices. Connections can gain relief on the weight allocated to their horse, stepped according to the record of the rider
So, you need to decide who has got it right, the owners of Earthwatch when choosing to give the leg up to Warren Fentiman, already a winning apprentice at York.
Or, those of Zyran who think the benefit of the 7lb reduction afforded to the less previously successful, Conor Whiteley, will see the partnership home in front. Could be time for a pin or your favourite colour. However you finish the day, as winner or unlucky loser, do come back and try again at our Finale on 10th & 11th of next month.
