York Racecard - Saturday 27th July

Page 1

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a fabulous afternoon of top-class racing and music. We welcome Jo, Tina, Rachel, Bradley and Jon to the Knavesmire and we very much look forward to the performance of S Club after the last race. With seven fascinating races and a fabulous concert after the last race, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your raceday. We are proud to bring the wonderful extended week of the Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival 2024 to its finale today. Now in its sixteenth year, and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our festival sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. These days serve to showcase the best the sport has to offer in the County The nominated charity for this festival is the Matt Hampson Foundation, an organisation that is helping jockey Graham Lee, following his life-changing injury His fellow riders have been taking the “Paddock & Chips” football challenge, with their shooting accuracy rewarding this fabulous cause, do give them a cheer in the Parade Ring an hour before the first race

In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College at Doncaster, IJF Jack Berry House in Malton and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county Yorkshire trainers and jockeys are flying high this season with tremendous results across the UK’s best meetings and Europe – we are proud to be a part of such a successful sport, locally

The most generous support of today’s sponsor has also helped stage a record race programme with prize money boosted once again, now in excess of £335,000 with the £135,000 Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes as the valuable feature. Run over a mile and a quarter, racing fans will remember Twice Over carrying the silks of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah to glory in both this race and the Group One Juddmonte International. You can see by the York logo next to their name that all of this year’s field are already eyeing a similar summer. This afternoon could see Alflaila become the first horse to win the race twice, he carries the famous Shadwell silks. Already a Group Two winner this season, Passenger, bids to give Sir Michael Stoute his second winner of this contest, some eighteen years after Best Alibi landed the inaugural running, as a three-year-old.

Our opening race will see nineteen riders more familiar with Cheltenham and Aintree sprint down the Knavesmire, as fast as they will go all season. Look out for Michael Nolan aboard Soul Seeker, the horse is seeking a third win in this race

If you are a first-time visitor, please do explore the racecourse - use the maps on p4-5 & p6-7 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel and as well as hear the thunder of hooves.

This afternoon we are proud to give racegoers a chance to explore the Southern End Development (see p18-19). The Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish&chip shop, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets. We hope you enjoy these latest improvements to our facilities as we use them for the first time this month as part of a “soft launch”, ahead of a more formal opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. Do let us know your thoughts!

Please respect our neighbours and home city as you make your way out this evening.

After today, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (21-24 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun.

Thank you for your support this afternoon and during the wider Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, I hope you have a fabulous day.

For now, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your afternoon.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

EXPLORE IT TODAY

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.

The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.

The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

The project is a little ahead of its scheduled Official Opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, but we wanted you to try it today.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

What about during the music?

There is a dedicated viewing platform to the east of the stage, please use the space with consideration for others.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

1st Race 2.05

The Sky Bet “Jump Jockeys Nunthorpe”

Stakes (To be ridden by Professional Jump Jockeys)

Five Furlongs (1,000 metres)

See page 78 for conditions of this race.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Prize Money: £25,000

Age: 4+

Stalls: Farside

This special race is set over the same distance as the Group 1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe run at our Sky Bet Ebor Festival in August, just five furlongs. However, even though this is the shortest distance in racing, this isn’t what makes this special.

All the horses today will be ridden by professional jump jockeys. Watch from the rails as these jockeys tackle the flying five furlongs of the Knavesmire, it could be as fast as they’ll go all season.

Need some help? Look further for the letter “C”, which shows that the horse has won at York or “D” which denotes a win over this distance. See how Soul Seeker has both initials after his name having won this very race twice already

KNAVESMIRE TIP

WOOBAY deservedly regain the winning thread at Ripon earlier in the month and a 2lb rise could prove to be lenient as she looks to follow up at a track that should suit her early speed. Zarzyni is also a key player, having hinted at a return to the winner’s enclosure on a couple of occasions this season, while Night On Earth is another capable sort on his day. Course-regular Ghathanfar is also noted, along with the unexposed Whisky McGonagall and Princess Karine

AUGUST CALENDAR

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

21 Wednesday

Things

to do: Win a

race that has twice been best in the world

Thirty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International. An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the recent update on the entry of Japanese St Leger winner, Durezza, owned by Carrot Farm Co Syndicate and trained by Tomohito Ozeki. The horse is set to arrive in Newmarket at the beginning of August and the team will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second nearly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France and Germany could be well represented with the likes of Horizon Dore and Zarakem, who were last seen finishing placed in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Epsom Derby and Sandown Eclipse winner City Of Troy has been indicated as a likely runner and so the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, he heads eleven potential runners from across the Irish Sea. Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai winner Economics hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since his emphatic triumph back in May, he would be a popular runner for William Haggas, if he decided to take up this engagement.

Become the sixteenth colt

to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2024 could see number increase to sixteen, following Continuous’s success last year. Illinois looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, he would be charting a similar path to the 2023 winner. Ambiente Friendly chased home City Of Troy in the Epsom Derby and then ran well again in the Irish equivalent, quicker ground may be the key however the Juddmonte International is the route that connections seem to be favouring at present. Charlie Appleby could be well represented with Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown. Locally owned Align The Stars will be hoping to give a big race win to Tony Farmer and trainer Charlie Johnston.

22 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Melo Melo, in the colours of racings newest powerhouse, Wathnan Racing. She may not be alone, with Dare To Dream completing any potential French challenge for Gavin Hernon. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning three of the last four renewals. Port Fairy looks likely to lead the line after her Group Two victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. In all, there are a dozen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from the likes of Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington, Johnny Murtagh, Dermot Weld and Aidan’s son, Joseph. Bluestocking could be the one they all have to beat however, with Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old looking better than ever after winning the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and the Group One Pretty Polly at the Curragh.

Ilinois

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

23 Friday

Things to do: Be the

fastest

The international theme continues into our fastest race of the week. A first Czech trained runner could be on the cards for Miroslav Nieslanik, his runner Ponntos has been in fine form this season. Australian revelation and Group One King Charles III winner, Asfoora, could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. They could well have 2023 winner Live In The Dream to beat, with two four-time winners this century already. The White Rose is often well represented, with this year shaping up to be no different, as Tim Easterby and the Quinn’s, both have strong looking hands a this stage.

Shareholder

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with Royal Ascot winner, Shareholder, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping should he turn up here Brian Meehan’s Rashbar sprung an 80/1 surprise at the same summer highlight but would be a much shorter price should he take up his engagement. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on Shadow Of Light and Aomori City.

24 Saturday

Things

to do: Earn a

place in the folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor The beauty of a handicap, especially after the recent publication of the weights, is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, with Harbour Wind, Belloccio and Alsakib vying for market favouritism. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Harry Eustace named the Sky Bet Ebor as the target for Crystal Delight following his win in the Jorvik. Saturn took the Curragh race for Jessica Harrington however the yard seem more likely to send Yashin. Middle Earth runs in the King George VI and is set to stay a Group race contender. Klondike impressed back in June, so much so that the Somerville Lodge operation are mulling whether the weight allocated to him is competitive. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

THE SKY BET YORK STAKES

It was in 2006, a year after we hosted Royal Ascot, that York Racecourse announced the birth of a new Group 2, the Sky Bet York Stakes, now the sporting centrepiece of Music Showcase Saturday.

It has, quite simply, gone from strength to strength since the three-year-old Best Alibi, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Ryan Moore, took the inaugural running, ahead of Hattan and Crocodile Dundee

The North needed a new, high summer middle distance Group race with the Scottish Derby disappearing from the programme We think that staging it here has worked on so many levels, not just the fact it is in the right place in the programme - as a “trial” for the big money Juddmonte International over course and distance, three and a half weeks later.

In fact, Twice Over, in the colours of the late Prince Khalid Abdullah, did that very double, in 2011.

Shadwell has historically been well represented in the race, winning it in 2013 with Mukhadram and in 2019 with Elarqam. This year connections are represented once again by Alflaila for trainer Owen Burrows. A winner of the 2019 Sky Bet and Symphony Strensall Stakes, the now five-year-old has good course form and bids to be the first to defend the title Were Jim Crowley to guide him home in front, then it would be four wins for the Shadwell team.

Twice Over

The 2019 renewal was certainly a memorable race when Elarqam kept the prize, for the only time so far, in Yorkshire for trainer Mark Johnston. The horse, who had won his Maiden on debut on the track proved far too good for the runner up that day - a certain Addeybb, now a multiple Group One winner from Berkshire to Australia.

If you need any more evidence in support of the Sky Bet York Stakes then just ask trainer David O’Meara, whose long-standing stable star, Lord Glitters, was third behind Aspetar, trained by Roger Charlton and ridden by Jason Watson. O’Meara’s Mondialiste, in the same ownership, finished second in both 2016 and 2017 White Rose hopes this year rest on Royal Rhyme for Middleham’s Karl Burke.

And this is that rare UK pattern race in being one Aidan O’Brien has never won. Back in 2007, when amazingly the ground rode heavy, his Eagle Mountain finished second, but winning it has eluded him... so far. Neither Ballydoyle nor any other Irish yard is represented today, so the wait for an Aidan O’Brien winner goes on.

A handicap by conditions but valuable enough for high class horses that may also perform well at the higher level of races.

This time for 3yo+ horses, rated up to 105 (as for the Test cricketers, a century denotes class). The shorter distance of only six furlongs usually makes for a tight finish.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

A determined winner over course and distance last season, RADIO GOO GOO may not get too much competition for the lead from a low draw and has been in particularly good form of late. Ground conditions look ideal as well and she is narrowly preferred to the progressive Trefor, who was impressive when scoring at Newmarket. Silky Wilkie has become well handicapped, while Ferrous and Manila Scouse cannot be ruled out either

WHERE DOES IT FIT? SOUND FAMILIAR?

As both as a Group two and a mid summer affair, it can be a testing ground for thoroughbreds who might yet make the final step up to Group One company. Often they have looked impressive early in their careers and maybe suffered an injury or just lost their way a little. For others, it can mark a step out of handicap company before the glaring spotlight of Group One contests.

Like the feature race of the day down in Berkshire, it is a middle distance affair that lets the classic generation take on their elders. This year it falls to King’s Gambit to fly the flag for the classic generation.

HAVE ANY WINNERS GONE ON TO HIGHER GLORY?

Mukhadram went on to top-level success after winning here, the Coral-Eclipse his top-level breakthrough, while Sheikhzayedroad progressed to be a high-class stayer, winning the Group 1 Northern Dancer Stakes at Woodbine on his next start and taking Group 2 Doncaster Cup and British Champions Long Distance Cup success later on in his career. Plus the below dual success for the famous Pink & Green silks of Juddmonte Farms.

Twice Over

THE JUDDMONTE CONNECTION

A little out of the usual profile for this race, Twice Over is perhaps the most successful winner of the race - already a Group 1 Champion Stakes winner (twice) and Coral-Eclipse champion, the late Prince Khalid Abdullah’s brilliant colt won the Sky Bet York Stakes on the way to Juddmonte International glory for the sponsor the following month. In becoming the first thoroughbred owned by the big race sponsor to take the August Blue Riband, there is a backhanded compliment to today’s contest, as the ideal prep race Confirming that sense of testing the trip and the track, all of today’s runners are already entered for August.

DOES AGE MATTER?

Given that 16 of the 18 winners have either been four, five or six-year-olds, then you have to say the answer is yes... to an extent.

The first winner, Best Alibi in 2006, was the only three-year-old to have won the race, while Tullius is the oldest winner of any Group 2, taking the 2015 renewal at the grand old age of seven.

Four-year-olds now have the best record, with six wins from the 18 runnings, Bangkok’s success in 2021 had tied the five and four-year-olds with five apiece. However the victory of Alflaila last year moved the four-year-olds back in front. With all but one aged four or five in the field, we will likely see one of those two age categories move into a narrow lead. King’s Gambit could become the first three-year-old since Best Alibi to win the race.

Tullius

LEADING TRAINERS?

It’s been a pretty even spread in the 18 runnings of the Sky Bet York Stakes, as there are just three trainers have two wins to their name. Saeed bin Suroor, who saddled both the 2007 winner, Stage Gift, and Kirklees to win in 2009. Roger Charlton, who trained 2020 winner, Aspetar, and the 2016 champion, Time Test Plus Andrew Balding, who joined them with Bangkok’s win in 2021 to go with Tullius victory in 2015. Owen Burrows and Sir Michael Stoute could join them with their respective runners, while Harry Charlton could carry the family name to a record three wins, courtesy of King’s Gambit.

LEADING RIDER?

Surprisingly, this race has not yet produced a dual winner from the saddle, but with the likes of Ryan Moore, Andrea Atzeni already on the roll of honour, it’s surely only a matter of time before one of these pilots takes their second Sky Bet York Stakes title None of today’s riders have won the race, so we will see a new name on the roll of honour

HOW DO YORKSHIRE STABLES FIGURE?

WHO ARE THE SPONSORS?

Sky Bet is the UK’s most popular online bookmaker.

We’ve been making betting better for years.

We’re hugely passionate about sport which is why we sponsor the English Football League and have a longestablished partnership with York Racecourse, including being the founding and consistent sponsor of today’s big race

In truth, not superbly - but that’s certainly not to say there hasn’t been any success for the White Rose County. Skipton-born William Haggas saddled Mukhadram to a 2013 victory, while Middleham’s Mark Johnston trained Elarqam to 2019 success The White Rose is today represented by Karl Burke, whose Middleham Park runner, Royal Rhyme, is the sole Yorkshire representative in today’s field.

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Group Two

Prize Money: £135,000

Age: 3+

Stalls: Inside Rail

The Sky Bet York Stakes is part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed, Group 3, Group 2 (this race) and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ horses and is over a trip of ten furlongs.

Weight allowances are made for the variation in strength based on age or sex, see how the 3yo Kings Gambit has a lesser burden. A further nuance is that any horse to already won at this level (or the sole step higher) must carry additional (so called penalty) weight; meaning such a success at Chester lands Passenger with a further 3lbs.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race and take a note as the winner may return for the Group One Juddmonte International on 21st August.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The unexposed PASSENGER may have a 3lb penalty to overcome for an impressive success in the Huxley at Chester, but he looked potentially top-class on that occasion and the second has since franked the form at Royal Ascot. A comfortable winner of this contest last year, and a slightly unlucky fourth when short of room at the start of the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, Alflaila looks to be the main danger King’s Gambit is another to note on the rise in grade, having stormed home from off the pace to finish second in the Hampton Court.

More significantly, dedicated race watchers and bookmakers will be aware of them so perhaps look for a clue in the betting market.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

The four fillies with Lowther entries catch the eye, with the impressive Beverley winner BEAUTY QUEEN preferred. The daughter of Soldier’s Call got better the further she went on that day, creating the impression this additional furlong should be ideal. Spherical got no sort of run in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot but is not ruled out with her sights lowered. Marygate fourth Glorious Kitty missed that Royal engagement due to unsuitable ground and is also a key player here Loopey appeals on pedigree and must be taken seriously too.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

This is a fiendishly tough handicap where the likes of the hat-trick-seeking Eagle Day as well as other in-form contenders such as Barley, My Harrison George and Master Of Combat all hold solid credentials. Nevertheless, BOY DOUGLAS, who was narrowly denied over 1m1f here last month, could trump them all with a furlong less to deal with this time around. The selection just ran out of steam near the finish that day and, off just 1lb higher, the unexposed gelding looks worth another chance.

BILL’S BAAR returned from a 90-day break to produce a highly-encouraging effort when hitting the frame in this grade over an extended mile at Nottingham last month. He represents a yard in fine form at present and the son of Elzaam looks to have lots in his favour. Crimson Spirit could only manage seventh at this level at Ascot after being gelded, but he could take a step forward off a 2lb lower mark with Richard Kingscote booked. Zipster is another to note.
