It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to York for what looks set to be a super evening of racing plus music. Our only evening meeting means Music Showcase, an event that combines top class racing with great headline music acts. We welcome Ricky, Andrew, Simon, Nick and Vijay back to the Knavesmire as we very much look forward to the performance of Kaiser Chiefs after the last race.

This is also the penultimate day of The Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival, now in its sixteenth year and firmly established thanks to the generous and loyal backing of our weeklong sponsors, Sky Bet and Goldsborough Hall. The nominated charity for this festival is the Matt Hampson Foundation, an organisation that is helping jockey Graham Lee, following his life-changing injury His fellow riders have been taking the “Paddock & Chips” football challenge, with their shooting accuracy rewarding this fabulous cause, do give them a cheer in the Parade Ring an hour before the first race.

In Yorkshire we have nine superb racecourses, over 100 training yards, the National Racing College at Doncaster, Jack Berry House in Malton and Goffs Bloodstock Sales, all making for a successful racing industry in the county. Yorkshire trainers and jockeys are flying high this season with tremendous results across the UK’s best meetings and Europe – we are proud to be a part of such a successful sport in the County

The most generous support of tonight’s sponsors has also helped offer prize money of £180,000 with a Listed contest, the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric as the valuable feature. An interesting clash of the generations sees, Ten Dimes, a developing three -year-old filly from the champion yard of the Gosdens, take on an experienced campaigner in the five-year-old Zarabanda for locally based, David O’Meara. Proven York form is provided by David and Yvonne Blunt’s Karmology who won at our June meeting. The latter’s handler Karl Burke is having a tremendous season and is in the mix to regain the leading trainer title on the Knavesmire, with three wins here this season already.

If you are a first-time visitor tonight, please do explore the racecourse - use the maps on p6-7 & p8-9 to guide you, or just ask any of the team in the teal blazers who will be happy to help My tip is to stand close to the rail as the horses race past, you can feel and as well as hear the thunder of hooves.

This evening, we are proud to give racegoers a chance to explore the Southern End Development (see p20-21). The Roberto Pavilion with its fast-serve bar and fish&chip shop, the Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy, Reg Bond Gates, improved Theakston Bar, William Hill betting shop and toilets. We hope you enjoy these latest improvements to our facilities as we use them for the first time this month as part of a “soft launch” ahead of a more formal opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival. Do let us know your thoughts!

After racing the BRIT award winners and multi-platinum selling Kaiser Chiefs will be on stage Do enjoy what is sure to be a high energy show, but please respect our neighbours and city as you make your way home this evening.

Thank you for your support today and during the wider Sky Bet Go Racing in Yorkshire Summer Festival. We hope to welcome you back again tomorrow for racing followed by S Club on the stage After that, our preparations will go up a gear as we are very much looking forward to staging our flagship meeting, the Sky Bet Ebor Festival (21-24 August) where some of the best horses from around the world look set to compete over four days of top-class racing, fashion and fun.

For now, I hope you thoroughly enjoy your night.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part usually in three races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Racing Post Standard Times

EXPLORE IT TODAY

Southern End Development

Regular visitors to the Knavesmire will have seen the ongoing investment in the facilities for horses, participants and racegoers at York. This commitment to improve the experience of racing at York continues with the focus being the area that lies to the south of the Knavesmire Stand and behind the Bustardthorpe Stand.

Today you can see a multi-million pound project that improves this area for Grandstand & Paddock racegoers, it is now open for you to enjoy. We’d value your feedback, as with any new development it should come on for the run.

The Roberto Pavilion provides a fast-serve bar, a fish & chip shop and a cocktail/Pimms bar. As well as, tote & William Hill outlets.

The Churchill Tyres Lawn and Canopy should be a great spot to relax and enjoy the food outlets and improved Theakston Bar that will flank it. A state of the art William Hill betting shop has reopened, with a new block of toilets.

In keeping with the Green Knavesmire 300 commitment, a host of sustainability features have been embedded; a living roof, rainwater harvesting and solar panels being examples.

THE HIGHLIGHTS ARE:

• Refurbishing the structure of the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand viewing steppings.

• A new, single storey, fast serve Roberto Pavilion that includes a fast- serve bar, a fish & chip shop as well as a Pimms/Cocktail bar.

• Replacing and extending the existing single-storey extension to the rear of the Bustardthorpe Stand creating a new, bigger Theakston Bar and William Hill betting shop.

• Two new racegoer lawns with an overarching canopy similar to that covering the John Carr Terrace.

• Additional toilet, catering and betting facilities.

• Improved arrival experience, including feature gates that remember owner-breeder, Reg Bond and improved accessibility.

• Sustainability embedded into the development such as solar panels, green roofs and sustainable water provision, as the venue delivers on its Green Knavesmire 300 pledge.

The project is a little ahead of its scheduled Official Opening at the Sky Bet Ebor Festival, but we wanted you to try it today.

A RACECOURSE FOR ALL

We want the racecourse to offer both a welcome and an enjoyable evening to all our racegoers and in delivering that we recognise that some may need additional assistance from us. We are also pleased to recognise the sunflower lanyard scheme.

The first thing to say, please just ask for help, if the team don’t have an instant answer, then they know someone who will. The team in the Racecourse Reception (behind the Ebor Stand) act as the link to the rest of the team, as needed.

FAQS

Is there accessible and blue badge parking?

Yes, I hope you found it. All our car parks have designated spaces near their front row. Can I get help with getting to/from the car park, taxi rank or shuttle buses?

Yes, there is a complimentary buggy service to all these points, ask a member of the team and they will radio to arrange your collection. Thank you for your patience as the buggies can only transfer 4 people at a time and it’s a big site.

Can I bring a wheelchair?

Yes, if you need to; but we also offer complimentary hire, again from Racecourse Reception (see told you they were the hub). As we hope you’ll appreciate, there are only so many wheelchairs on site, if you need to reserve in advance then call 01904 620911. Considerately piloted mobility scooters are permitted. Can I bring somebody to help?

Yes, we appreciate that will come in various forms, we hope our “carer comes free” scheme is a help, before your next visit check it out online at www.yorkracecourse. co.uk or just ask the team today.

Are there wheelchair viewing platforms?

Yes, in all stand side area and Stands - easiest thing to do is to ask our Stewards, though a map is available from, you guessed it, Racecourse Reception. Please use these in the spirit intended, with carers being prepared to step aside to allow space for those who need the view the most.

What about toilets and are they part of the Radar scheme?

Yes they are, all the permanent toilet blocks have a accessible capability, please ask for directions or check that map from you know where.

Are their wheelchair height food and drink counters?

Yes there are but not as many as we’d like, please ask a member of the team to assist you.

Wheelchair height betting?

Yes, there are some Tote counters set at a reduced height though a better plan might be to use the courier service that operates in areas such as the main Champagne Lawns; the Tote team themselves are always willing to help.

Can I bring my assistance dog?

Of course, as the tribute to Grady demonstrates, registered assistance dogs are most welcome. There was one more thing?

Please ask, we are keen to help wherever we can, appreciating our racegoers may face a range of challenges.

What about during the music?

There is a dedicated viewing platform to the east of the stage, please use the space with consideration for others.

Examples of viewing platforms both around the Parade Ring and trackside

Having shown up nicely in two starts at this venue already this season, LEADENHALL can get proceedings off to a flying start for the Tim Easterby yard A commendable third over C&D a fortnight ago, the selection appeals strongly back for more off the same mark. Tanmawwy and Great Max are other serious contenders, although Doncaster dead-heater Charencey commands respect off just 2lb higher

AUGUST CALENDAR

With the first stage of entries received for the feature races at the

21 Wednesday

Things

to do: Win a

race that has twice been best in the world

Thirty seven of the best middle distance horses are currently entered in the £1.25m Juddmonte International. An intriguing list of hopefuls is made all the more interesting by the recent update on the entry of Japanese St Leger winner, Durezza, owned by Carrot Farm Co Syndicate and trained by Tomohito Ozeki. The horse is set to arrive in Newmarket at the beginning of August and the team will be hoping to go one better than Zenno Rob Roy, who finished second nearly twenty years ago after making the 25,000-mile round trip. France and Germany could be well represented with the likes of Horizon Dore and Zarakem, who were last seen finishing placed in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. Epsom Derby and Sandown Eclipse winner City Of Troy has been indicated as a likely runner and so the chief hope of the Emerald Isle for Aidan O’Brien, he heads eleven potential runners from across the Irish Sea. Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai winner Economics hasn’t been seen on a racecourse since his emphatic triumph back in May, he would be a popular runner for William Haggas, if he decided to take up this engagement.

Become the sixteenth colt

to win Sky Bet Great Voltigeur and Betfred St Leger

Fifteen colts have done the double and this year’s list of entries provides plenty of hope that 2024 could see number increase to sixteen, following Continuous’s success last year. Illinois looks to be the leading hope after he won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, he would be charting a similar path to the 2023 winner. Ambiente Friendly chased home City Of Troy in the Epsom Derby and then ran well again in the Irish equivalent, quicker ground may be the key however the Juddmonte International is the route that connections seem to be favouring at present. Charlie Appleby could be well represented with Ancient Wisdom and Arabian Crown. Locally owned Align The Stars will be hoping to give a big race win to Tony Farmer and trainer Charlie Johnston.

22 Thursday

Things to do: Prove to be one of the best fillies in Europe

The last time the race went over to mainland Europe was in 2012, when Shareta scored for Alain de Roger-Dupre, this year Les Bleus could have Melo Melo, in the colours of racings newest powerhouse, Wathnan Racing. She may not be alone, with Dare To Dream completing any potential French challenge for Gavin Hernon. Ballydoyle has had a strong grip on this race in recent years, winning three of the last four renewals. Port Fairy looks likely to lead the line after her Group Two victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. In all, there are a dozen entries from the Emerald Isle, including from the likes of Willie Mullins, Jessica Harrington, Johnny Murtagh, Dermot Weld and Aidan’s son, Joseph. Bluestocking could be the one they all have to beat however, with Ralph Beckett’s four-year-old looking better than ever after winning the Group Two Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Middleton and the Group One Pretty Polly at the Curragh.

Ilinois

Sky Bet Ebor Festival, we mark your calendar.

23 Friday

Things to do: Be the

fastest

The international theme continues into our fastest race of the week. A first Czech trained runner could be on the cards for Miroslav Nieslanik, his runner Ponntos has been in fine form this season. Australian revelation and Group One King Charles III winner, Asfoora, could give Henry Dwyer a first winner on the Knavesmire. They could well have 2023 winner Live In The Dream to beat, with two four-time winners this century already. The White Rose is often well represented, with this year shaping up to be no different, as Tim Easterby and the Quinn’s, both have strong looking hands a this stage.

Shareholder

Follow in the hooves of greats like Mill Reef or Rock of Gibraltar

North Yorkshire could be well represented in the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes, with Royal Ascot winner, Shareholder, the pick of the entries for Karl Burke. He remains unbeaten in two starts and would likely take a lot of stopping should he turn up here Brian Meehan’s Rashbar sprung an 80/1 surprise at the same summer highlight but would be a much shorter price should he take up his engagement. Charlie Appleby has won two of the last ten renewals, so keep tabs on Shadow Of Light and Aomori City.

24 Saturday

Things

to do: Earn a

place in the folklore of the Knavesmire

That is the honour that awaits the victor of one of the toughest flat handicaps in the world and one of the richest in Europe, the £500,000 Sky Bet Ebor The beauty of a handicap, especially after the recent publication of the weights, is that you can make a case for all twenty-two who finally make the stalls, with Harbour Wind, Belloccio and Alsakib vying for market favouritism. So, which to mention; Sky Bet Race To The Ebor winners seem a logical place to start. Harry Eustace named the Sky Bet Ebor as the target for Crystal Delight following his win in the Jorvik. Saturn took the Curragh race for Jessica Harrington however the yard seem more likely to send Yashin. Middle Earth runs in the King George VI and is set to stay a Group race contender. Klondike impressed back in June, so much so that the Somerville Lodge operation are mulling whether the weight allocated to him is competitive. Whoever wins, they can look forward to a warmer November than is on offer in Yorkshire, as the Sky Bet Ebor winner now has a guaranteed start in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Hopefully the above sets the scene for a twenty eight race festival where £100,000 is the lowest prize fund and the richest maiden race in the land, the British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes, or the richest nursery handicap in the Sky Bet Stakes, add to the cocktail of high fashion and high class sport.

When they were bought, at a recognised auction, the market was deemed as an assessment of their quality and so potential, the most expensive being categorised as Band A, the next group as Band B and so on. If you must know, the Band As went for above £50,000 descending in roughly £20,000 bands thereafter

Any horse of the same sex, in higher Band racing in opposition to one from a lower Band must start by carrying two pounds in extra weight compare Barry’s Boy and Flamborough Head. Though all the fillies start with a lower weight than the boys, the same logic applies amongst themselves, which is why Endeavouryourdream is 2lb lower than Dark Rainbow.

If this all sounds a bit complicated, then a pin is a proven method in these races.

LAST YEAR’S RACE

Winner: LOOSE CANNON

Trainer: William Haggas

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope

Age/Weight: 2-9-7

Runners: 11 SP: 13/8F

Wasn’t the most straightforward to load and sat in the rear for most of the race. Travelled powerfully into the lead and despite being challenged strongly, was always doing enough.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

THE TALE OF THE CLOCK

Racing Post Standard Time: 1m 22.90s

Course Record: 1m 22.32s by Dutch Connection (20-Aug-14)

All times are based where possible on the corresponding race over the last seven years

Leading course trainer (19-24): R Fahey (29 wins from 444 runners, 7%) runs DARK RAINBOW, ENDEAVOURYOURDREAM & FAR AHEAD

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (8 wins from 87 runners, 9%) runs FLAMBOROUGH HEAD

Longest Travellers: RISK trained by T Dascombe & PRAETORIAN trained by A Watson, Upper Lambourn, 202 miles.

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Impartiality, Barry’s Boy and Master Of Zest are all potential improvers, while chief among the debutants could be Seed Investor and Far Ahead, who appeal on pedigree and certainly warrant betting checks. However, PRAETORIAN is hard to ignore given his proximity to subsequent July Stakes runner-up Billboard Star at Newmarket last month. Another step forward from the Archie Watson-trained colt could well suffice here.

RACE FACTS & STATISTICS

NOTE: All statistics are up to and including 24th July

KNAVESMIRE TIP

RAYAT looked a sprint handicapper to keep firmly on the right side of when scoring comfortably over 6f at Nottingham earlier this month on his first try over the trip, and the suspicion is that a 7lb rise may not be enough to anchor him here. Iris Dancer showed a likeable attitude when winning gamely at Carlisle latest and, upped 2lb, she should be thereabouts when it matters once more. Minnesota Lad took advantage of a sliding mark to score narrowly at Doncaster last month

RACE DESCRIPTION

Distance: 1m 2f

Race Type: Listed

Prize Money: £70,000

Age: 3+ f&m

Stalls: Inside Rail

Our fifth race is a part of the Pattern pyramid which denotes the best contests, Listed (like this one), Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1. This race is open to 3yo+ fillies and mares only and is over a mile and a quarter

All are registered with the European Breeders’ Fund. This means that their sire (father) is based and registered in Europe with the EBF, which is a scheme to encourage the best in bloodstock.

As racing recognises that younger horses, aged 3, are likely to be at a different stage of development, notice how Ten Dimes is one of a quartet to benefit by starting with a lower weight. Looking for help? Then follow the racecourse tipster, who has marked his selections with a red bi plane.

KNAVESMIRE TIP

Ejaabiyah commands the utmost respect on the back of her Salisbury romp last month, but this doesn’t look to be the penalty kick that her forecast prohibitive odds suggest, and the value may lie elsewhere, namely with BOLSENA. Kevin Ryan’s charge was denied in the shadows of the post after looking the likely winner for a long way when finishing runner-up over 1m2f at Goodwood on her penultimate start. That form has a strong look to it and, with her recent Sandown blow out appearing to be too bad to be true, she gets the vote to bounce back in style here. Where I Wanna Be and Ten Dimes are also considered.

A WINTER’S TALE:

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?

A LOT OF WORK HAS GONE INTO THE SOUTHERN END DEVELOPMENT (SEE P20-21), HOWEVER THE RACECOURSE TEAMS HAVE BEEN BUSY ELSEWHERE…..

WINE & CHEESE BAR

EDWARDIAN WEIGHING ROOM

Since 2015, this one-time hub of the racing operation has been a popular destination for racegoers who want to combine a little nostalgia with their drinks. This winter, a Wine & Cheese Bar has been added. Speaking about the new treats, the head of our food operation, Kevin Pinnington said: “People were always telling me how much they liked the old wine & cheese cellar, then doing our stock take, I realised we had some really lovely wines that were effectively bin-ends because we didn’t have enough bottles to offer them on the main wine list. So, this new bar is a bit of a “back to the future” as it’s a way to let County Stand badgeholders try them by the glass, combined with some traditional favourites. Add in a selection of carefully chosen Yorkshire cheeses plus some cold meats and we hope people will enjoy it.”

KNAVESMIRE STAND

The high class action on the track is clearly seen from the steppings and boxes of this stand, however the PA system was showing its age. A major investment should mean that the commentators can now better add to the drama and let you know what price your winning bets were returned at As with any new technology, it might take a few meetings to settle in, so please help us by sharing your experience with the team on the ground.

ALCOVES BAR

GIMCRACK STAND

Another County Stand area, that once discovered is much loved, has benefited from a winter refurbishment. Lighter and brighter, check out the extended range of Tanqueray gins, offered with premium Schweppes tonics.

MULTIPLE BARS

The new Bar in the Roberto Pavilion should speed up drinks service in that area but we’ve also added even more fast tills, there are nearly 250 around the site. Not to mention thirty new under the bar fridges.

OUT OF SIGHT:

Every winter a whole host of “out of sight work” is completed. The investment in these infrastructure projects keeps the racecourse functioning on the busy days This year the pumps in the Ebor Stand were replaced and drainage works undertaken outside the Gimcrack Stand.

About a mile from the track is the working home of Head Gardener, Zak Rafferty A regular winner of Yorkshire in Bloom Awards, the Victorian Greenhouse has benefited from major refurbishment.

The Sky Bet Ebor Festival Wednesday 21 –Saturday 24 August

The Championship will be determined by the number of winners recorded and in the event of a tie, placed efforts will prove the deciding factor. The winner will receive the coveted Charles Clinkard Trophy and a smart pair of shoes (worth £250) plus £2,500 for the stable to share and a Christmas Party here at York in December.

East Tyrone just edged out his rivals to keep Kevin Ryan in front, of what is shaping up to be an excellent championship.

A farewell handicap, are you feeling their fascination yet? Your key numbers are just for 3yos only, over a speedy five and a half furlongs.

If an apprentice jockey partners a horse, they can claim a reduction in weight to balance their relative lack of experience, see how Make It Easy benefits by 5lb as Alex Jary makes his way in the saddle.

An in-form stable could be the clue here, see the table at the beginning of this race.

If you are successful, then you can bask in the glory of picking the last York winner until at least 2.06pm tomorrow.
