Made entirely from welded horsehoes, the 'Oss stands at 15 feet and weighs in at over half a tonne.

This is the second horse of this scale that Ollie has created. The first is slightly smaller and is stabled at Cheltenham Racecourse.

OLLIE HOLMAN SCULPTOR

We are delighted to have on display in the Parade Ring, this amazing Rearing Horse sculpture by Yorkshire-based Metal Art Sculptor Ollie Holman. For the time being we are calling the piece 'the 'Oss'.

From humble beginnings, aged just 13 and tinkering with scrap metal in his Dad's garage, Ollie has become an international selling Metal Sculptor with a large body of work including metal horse sculptures of all sizes to more organic metal wall art Ollie has a range of pieces for sale, including 'the 'Oss', and also works on bespoke client commissions.

We hope you enjoy seeing 'The 'Oss' on your visits with us this season.

WELCOME TO WETHERBY RACECOURSE!

On behalf of the Directors and the Management team, it is a real pleasure to be able to offer a warm Yorkshire welcome to everyone at the start of our 2022/2023 racing season today, with another 19 days of excellent racing here to come finishing on Tuesday 13th June 2023.

It has been encouraging for all of us to have been able to plan ahead without having to manage the limitations that were caused by the recent pandemic from which, I am pleased to say, Wetherby Racecourse has emerged in good shape, thanks in no small way to the hard work and dedication of our management team and all the racecourse staff for which the Directors are greatly appreciative. We are delighted to welcome back most of our generous sponsors, including Bet365 who will support at the bet365 Charlie Hall meeting on 28th and 29th October and William Hill who sponsor the William Hill Yorkshire Christmas Meeting on 26th and 27th December together with the William Hill Towton Chase at our meeting on Saturday 4th February next year.

Although the coronavirus pandemic is, hopefully, behind us everyone at Wetherby Racecourse is aware of the potentially difficult economic period that lies ahead, and we will do everything we can to make your visits as enjoyable as possible throughout the coming season which includes 16 days of excellent Jump racing and four Flat race meetings.

So may I close this brief message by expressing our sincere thanks to all of our supporters including our generous Sponsors, all the Owners and Trainers who bring their horses, the Jockeys who come to ride them, the Stable Staff who care for them and our loyal public who come to see them and, on behalf of the Directors, I wish every one of you an enjoyable and successful season of racing here at Wetherby.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

Form Guide

The figures in red display the horse’s previous form, with the number denoting finishing position. The number on the right shows the runners most recent result, with abbreviations used also. A layoff from racing is shown with either or / CD Course and distance winner; BF Beaten favourite; F Fell; B Brought down; P Pulled up; R Refused; S Slipped up; U Unseated rider; R Ran out.

The form guide is provided to help you pick which horse will carry your money in the race. Read the Timeform comment carefully and try to weigh up the horse’s previous runs against the conditions of the race.

Race Stats are also provided above the race and provide vital information about which trainers are in-form and which horses have made the longest journey to the racecourse today. After you’ve studied the form and made your selection, make sure you get a good position down by the winning post to watch your selection come home in front

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

THE BUZZ by Wetherbee

RACE ONE

Romeo Brown was last seen winning at Haydock over a staying distance and may find this trip on the sharp side, with the in-form SONNING making more appeal arriving here on the back of a success at Sedgefield seven days ago, when the front two pulled clear Better can be expected of Collingham now dropped in trip, with Fusain another to note now 6lb lower than when finishing fourth at Haydock in December

WIN: SONNING DANGER: Collingham

RACE TWO

Texard drops in distance and the David Pipe-trained inmate should find himself more competitive now eased in class too. However, EL BORRACHO makes greater appeal after recording his fourth success over fences at Warwick last month, for which a 5lb rise shouldn’t prevent a bold bid. C&D winner Joke Dancer is respected on his return after a summer break and he is noted along with Slanelough.

WIN: EL BORRACHO DANGER: Texard

RACE THREE

The Churchill Lad ran out an easy winner at Cartmel when last seen in August and the Rebecca Menzies-trained gelding will be out to put his experience to good use here against an inexperienced field. He may, however, struggle to concede 7lb to HIGHLAND FROLIC, who was a useful stayer on the Flat and won’t lack for stamina in this discipline. Vintage Valley may improve for the initial hurdling experience at Sedgefield and is also considered.

WIN: HIGHLAND FROLIC DANGER: The Churchill Lad RACE FOUR

A case can be made for several of these, but SAINT ARVANS arrives on an attractive mark having kept on strongly to score on his most recent run at Hexham last month. A 3lb higher rating may not be enough to stop him, judged on the manner of that latest two-length success, and he can give another good account. Pencreek could bounce back from his latest showing and is feared most ahead of Whoshotthesheriff

WIN: SAINT ARVANS DANGER: Pencreek

RACE FIVE

Kansas City Chief drops considerably in grade following a disappointing run in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham in March and has claims if ready to roll after a break, but CAIUS MARCIUS has been consistent recently and can improve back up in trip He remains 3lb higher than his last winning mark but gets the vote to bounce back while Hillview lost little in defeat over 3m2f in July and is also open to improvement.

WIN: CAIUS MARCIUS

DANGER: Kansas City Chief RACE SIX

NOT WHAT IT SEEMS arrives here having won his last two starts over 2m4f at Sedgefield and he merits plenty of respect on his return to action, despite having to carry a 12lb penalty. Ballyporeen and Carlo Du Berlais both displayed some promise in bumpers and it would be no surprise to see either of them go well, while A Definite Getaway is a newcomer to note.

WIN: NOT WHAT IT SEEMS DANGER: Ballyporeen RACE SEVEN

It is hard to oppose GET WITH IT, who was successful at Perth two starts ago and he only found one too good when last seen at the same venue. A further 3lb rise in the ratings may not be enough to prevent another good performance. Mac Suibhne has some good form to his name and he edges out Ceolwulf to be the pick of the remainder Big Difference would be a player if turned out quickly again following his victory at Hereford yesterday, although he must carry a 7lb penalty as a result.

WIN: GET WITH IT

DANGER: Mac Suibhne

In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130. BOBBY RENTON

The late Bobby Renton trained many winners from his base at Oxclose, near Ripon, including the 1950 Grand National winner, Freebooter. He also trained Red Rum before he became a household name. His long and distinguished training career lasted for some 50 years. He occasionally rode his own horses as an amateur rider, and he was a sprightly 75 years old when riding in his last race a selling hurdle at Hexham on September 30th, 1963. He finished unplaced on Devon Peter, thereby being acknowledged as Britain’s oldest jockey!

Tom was a titan of journalism & huge supporter of Yorkshire racing, and we were all greatly shocked and saddened as the news of his passing filtered through to us as we raced on Thursday 31st March this year

We have waited to honour Tom’s memory until today, the opening meeting of the Jump season that Tom so enthusiastically enjoyed. Our first without him.

The following tribute has been beautifully penned by David Carr, from Racing Post.

Forgive a note of sadness today, but there is something missing as we gather once more at Wetherby.Look up at the weighing room and you will see it. Or rather you won’t. Gone is the familiar and reassuring sight of Tom Richmond, without whom no meeting here has been complete for many a year

The steps down to the parade ring were home from home for the Yorkshire Post’s indefatigable racing correspondent, a place where he would beguile jockeys and trainers, owners and stewards, winning their confidence and luring them into a fascinating revelation with which to entertain his readers. But no more. Tom died suddenly in March, at the ridiculously young age of just 52

He was actually Opinion Editor at the YP and the trenchant way he expressed his views in print has been much spoken of in the days since his death, along with his even-handed manner with politicians and plumbers, bishops and bartenders.

Yet you and I know that racing is far more important than his day job and so, you suspect, did Tom, who loved the sport with a passion. As he said when making the shortlist for Racing Writer of the Year at the Horserace Writers And Photographers Association Derby Awards in 2014, “To me, racing is special because of its human and equine heroes. They should never be taken for granted. “Without them, life would be very dull and those working in the sport should never tire of trying to promote racing’s more uplifting stories.”

None worked harder to promote our sport in a county whose nine courses he knew so well, and many is the up-and-coming jockey or trainer who has particular reason to be grateful for a well-timed plug.

Today Wetherby stage a race in Tom’s honour, and a memorial bench will be presented to his family, which will sit proudly outside the weighing room where he did so much fine work, and it would be no surprise were his old friends Sue & Harvey Smith, to be found in the months ahead, sitting on this bench plotting their next poignant victory!
