Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Bank Holiday Family Day and GBR Ownership Day!

We are renowned for our fantastic family days at Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse and we have loads of free fun for kids in the Course Enclosure this afternoon. We are also joined once more by Tom Roberts Jazz Band on the bandstand.

It’s fantastic to have GBR ‘In The Paddock’ with us today for an Ownership Day. If you’ve ever considered getting involved in racehorse ownership then pop along and have a chat and a cup of tea with some of the syndicates here today either at the far end of the parade ring or in the Claro Bar. You can even win a share in a racehorse and meet Mulligatawny, one of our equine ambassadors.

On the track we have a great afternoon of racing, featuring the British Stallion Studs EBF Ripon Champion Two-Yrs-Old Trophy at 3.12, a Listed contest with £40,000 in prize money up for grabs. We are excited to see who adds their name to the roll of honour this afternoon and how the careers of all the contenders progress.

Its amazing how quickly the season flies by. It seems like just yesterday we were planning for the start of the season but after today we have just two fixtures remaining. The first of these is tomorrow and then we have a few weeks until our season finale, the Theakston’s Beer Festival on Saturday 28th September.

Wishing you a great afternoon.

STAR RATING EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race.

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

TODAY’S TIPS

RACE

1

HUSCAL performed with plenty of credit when finishing sixth in a warm Goodwood maiden last month and, with the promise of improvement to come, he gets the vote to land the spoils at the second time of asking. Cape Sovereign chased homed two potentially useful types when third over 6f at Redcar last month and he can give the selection most to think about Calibos appears to be the pick of the Richard Fahey-trained duo and he is respected most out of the remainder on his debut.

2

TOTEEACHWAY: CAPE SOVEREIGN

This looks a good opportunity for SLANEY SWAGGER to put his experience to good use and gain a breakthrough victory. The son of Profitable made a pleasing start to life withAlice Haynes when finishing third over 1m1f at Hamilton earlier this month and, with the likelihood of more to come in first-time cheekpieces, helookstheonetosidewith.NorthSummitdidn’tcutmuchicewhenfinishingdownthefield over a mile at Chelmsford on his debut recently, but he merits a second look with improvement expected nowstepped up in trip. 4

TOTEEACHWAY: SHADOWARMY

The progressive Debora’s Dream made most ofthe running to land a double last month, but may he well be taken on for the lead by Windsor runner-up Love De Vega today, and that could set the race up nicely for MAJOR PARTNERSHIP Saeed bin Suroor’s veteran is having his first start of the year, though has gone well fresh on more than on occasion in the past, and is only 3lb higher than when successful in this grade at Nottingham last summer TOTEWIN: MAJOR PARTNERSHIP

DEBORA’S DREAM

RACE 5

STRONGJOHNSONwon twice at this time lastyear, including avictoryoverthis course a distance. Paul Midgley’s sprinter races off a 7lb lower mark today and recent placed efforts suggest a return to winning ways is imminent He looks to have most to fear from recent Musselburgh runner-up OurAbsent Friends, given both InglebyArchie and High Opinion have looked in the grip of the handicapper since landing doubles during the summer

RACE 6

Stepping back up in trip looks like a good move for KEEN INTEREST, having been outpaced late on when not beaten far over 1m at Yarmouth last week following a 1m3f success at Yarmouth. Alice Haynes’ charge seems well treated by the conditions of this contest, and it maybe that Laudable gives him the most to think about following a taking success at Ayrwhen having his first go at this distance. Peripeteia and Tiberio Force are likely to be thereabouts as well.

TOTEWIN: KEEN INTEREST

RACE 7

TOTEEACHWAY:

A determined winner over further at Yarmouth last month in a classified stakes contest that has worked out well since, SHIELD OF HONOUR looks more than capable of following up in this amateur jockeys’ contest from a plum inside draw. Masque Of Anarchy almost ended a long losing streak when narrowly denied at Beverley last time out and he is entitled to be thereabouts again Others to note include Chicago al, Edwina Sheeran and Irv.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-yearolds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This one mile and one furlong contest for horses aged three to five years old is another maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 53 to 72 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

RACE DESCRIPTION

This is a one mile and two furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a mi nimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
