Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Visit Malta Hungerford Day, a highlight of our flat racing calendar, with Clean Bandit performing live after racing.
To begin, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, D&H, TPT Fire, Tattersalls, Chapel Down, Hits Radio and Grosvenor Sport. My extended thanks also go to our new title partner, Visit Malta, who sponsor today’s feature race.
Courtesy of Visit Malta’s generosity one lucky racegoer in attendance today will win a dream holiday to Malta – more information on the prize draw and how to enter is included later in the racecard.
The £150,000 Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes was first run on 19th August 1949 over seven furlongs and 60 yards. It was won by Star King, who had earlier triumphed in the Greenham Stakes. Star King was later renamed Star Kingdom and sold to Australia, where he went on to have a successful stud career Today’s field of ten declared runners includes the impressive Witness Stand, winner of the Goodwood Lennox Stakes, who will be aiming to add another Group 2 title to his record Also lining up is Rage Of Bamby, recent winner of the Hackwood Stakes, representing the in-form Eve Johnson Houghton team.
We were thrilled to officially launch Bar None at yesterday’s Summer August Raceday - our new low and no-alcohol lounge. Located on the ground floor of the Hampshire Stand, Bar None offers a comfortable alcohol-free space serving a wide selection of non-alcoholic beverages, including mocktails, soft drinks, smoothies, and hot drinks.

How To Bet
There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.
