Good afternoon and welcome to our 2021 season finale! It’s been a strange season in many ways as we began with our first four meetings ‘Behind Closed Doors’ but it was great to finally welcome the public back from May and we’ve had some fantastic racing, some of the obvious highlights being the William Hill Great St Wilfrid and the EBF Ripon Champion Two-Yrs-Old-Trophy. The winner of the latter, Flotus, contests the Group 1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket at 2.25 today so fingers crossed for a big run from her. The William Hill Great St Wilfrid winner meanwhile, Justanotherbottle, returns to contest our feature race at 4.05 after a great effort in Listed company at Beverley last time. In addition to some great racing this afternoon we have music on the bandstand from fantastic local artist Rob Hiscoe who has raised an enormous sum of money for charity over the pandemic. Please check out page 20 to find out more. We hope you have a wonderful afternoon with us today. Thanks for your support in 2021 and we hope to see you again in 2022. The fixtures for next year can be found on the back of your racecard so please get some dates in the diary. Very best regards. JAMES HUTCHINSON Managing Director

TODAY’S TIPS RACE

1

Following a pleasing debut over 6f, Irish Millions took a step backwards over a furlong further at Brighton next time out and now has a bit to prove. PROCLIVITY, second on easy ground in both 5f starts, looks a viable alternative with this extra furlong likely to elicit a chunk of improvement judged on the way she was keeping on at the finish here last time. Rainbow Colours also has to enter the equation after showing improved form over this trip at Wolverhampton second time out.

WIN: PROCLIVITY

RACE

2

Stripzee confirmed herself to be on the upgrade with a recent second-placed effort and should remain competitive, but any value here may lie with Richard Fahey’s nursery debutant ONE MORE TRY, who has shaped better than his bare form suggests in novice events. Having cost 90,000 guineas, there should be a fair bit more to come from him over this longer trip and his opening mark looks exploitable. Fellow nursery first-timers Never No Trouble, Coligone Kate and Bazalgette are also worth a second look.

WIN: ONE MORE TRY

RACE

DANGER: INNSE GALL

Although she finished last at Haydock, Artemisia Lomi showed some encouraging signs behind three promising individuals and she could build on that performance to be one of the main protagonists in his contest. However, STAY HOME caught the eye staying on in the closing stages at Beverley on debut shaping like she would appreciate the step up to this trip, so she gets the vote. Hoopmalassie is entitled to come on for her seasonal reappearance at Hamilton and may also feature.

WIN: STAY HOME

RACE

DANGER: : JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE

DREAMS UNWIND won convincingly at Catterick and if she can reproduce that performance she could prove hard to beat, while Innse Gall also looks a big player. He has been steadily progressing and may improve again as he steps up another furlong in trip. Carrigillihy has shown glimpses of ability to suggest that he can be competitive at this level and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix.

WIN: DREAMS UNWIND

RACE

DANGER: COLEY’S KOKO

Having landed the valuable Great St Wilfrid handicap over C&D last month, Justanotherbottle lost nothing in defeat in a Beverley Listed event last time and should remain competitive despite a 5lb rise. For all that, he may have his work cut out to defeat the unexposed REGIONAL who defied an 11-month absence to make a winning handicap debut for his new yard having shown plenty of juvenile promise for Richard Fahey. Great St Wilfrid runner-up Golden Apollo remains well treated but has won just one of his last 37 starts.

WIN: REGIONAL

RACE

DANGER: COLIGONE KATE

MARK’S CHOICE could never get competitive from an unfavourable high draw at Ayr last week but he’s a Ripon specialist (five wins) and, though he’s arguably better over 6f, he’d shown that he’s capable of winning off his current mark when an unlucky second here last month. Both Coley’s Koko and Roydmoor posted career-best efforts to win at Catterick and Ayr respectively last time and remain of interest despite incurring weight rises, while Atiyah can also get competitive.

WIN: MARK’S CHOICE

RACE

DANGER: RAINBOW COLOURS

DANGER: ARTEMISIA LOMI

USTATH wasn’t disgraced when fourth in a strong-looking race here last time and he has strong claims if he can produce a similar performance, especially if he is allowed an easy lead. Singe Anglais was slowly away at Pontefract and if he breaks better in this contest he could have a live chance, while Nearly A Gonna disappointed on his latest outing but would have a great chance if he can bounce back from that performance.

WIN: USTATH

DANGER: SINGE ANGLAIS

STAR RATING EXPLAINED Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The second race is also for two-year-olds. It is a nursery handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only. In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won a race, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular contest is one mile and is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 70.

The first handicap on the card is like most handicaps on the flat, this one js five a furlongs handicap for three-year-olds and upwards rated between 61 and 80 is also open to horses which are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is usually a disadvantage.

Q&A WITH ROB HISCOE Our music on the bandstand today comes from fantastic local artist Rob Hiscoe. Welcome back, Rob, what have you been up to since you were last with us in 2019? It’s been quite incredible for me really, I started out doing some live singing sessions on my Facebook page and on Youtube, with the aim of raising £100 for NHS All Together Charity but the current total stands at £14,570! I’ve been in the Yorkshire Evening Post and on local radio and I’ve had support from some local sports stars too, Kalvin Phillips and Josh Warrington donated items for raffles etc which raised more cash. I even did a live stream singing session for 14 hours straight!

That’s quite amazing, what inspired you to do it?

Well it started as just something to do during lockdown to try to raise some money for a good cause but then it really caught on and I’ve had people watching from all over the world, Spain, Venezuela, USA and messages too from people to say how I’m helping them through the situation and to keep doing what I’m doing. I’ve even been asked to perform tribute songs by families and I’m happy to sing whatever people want to hear. If you’d like to listen to one of Rob’s sessions please visit: www.facebook.com/robert.j.hiscoe. His Just Giving page is: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/robert-hiscoenhslivesundayset.

Horse

Similar to the third race this one is for horses rated between 56 and 75 is also open to horses which are rated below that particular band. Run over one mile and four furlongs it is a real test of stamina. Handicaps such as these stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is usually a disadvantage.

Not a strong novice event and it may pay to side with ARTEMISIA LOMI. She wasn’t seen to best effect at Haydock on her latest outing but the balance of her form gives her sound claims in this line-up and she can come out on top. Stay Home and Hoopmalassie can do battle for minor honours.
