Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.
ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface

DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old
FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year
FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse

MAIDEN horse which has not won a race

ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit

RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse
SIRE father of a horse

about SIX FURLONGS (6f abt 6yds) (1200m)
5.30pm
This race is a six furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (20-25): R Fahey (33 wins from 177 runners, 19%) runs BLACK ROCK BEAUTY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): C Johnston (9 wins from 58 runners, 16%) runs SAND LILY Longest Traveller: ASCENDING STAR trained by J Owen, Newmarket, 360 miles.

A nursery is a handicap that is restricted to two-year-olds only In order to be allowed to take part, entrants must have already run in three maiden or novice races, or have won two races, which then qualifies them for an official handicap rating based on what they have achieved so far. Quite simply, the higher their rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry. This particular six furlongs race is for horses which have been rated from 0 to 75.

Magic Box was successful on handicap debut at Kempton last time and remains open to progress back on turf, while Blue to Blue should appreciate this drop in grade.

about SIX FURLONGS (6f abt 6yds) (1200m) 6.35pm
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 81 to 100. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (20-25): I Jardine (42 wins from 336 runners, 12%) runs JONNY CONCRETE and MOONSTONE BOY Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): M Dods (6 wins from 29 runners, 21%) runs COMMANCHE FALLS and NORTHERN TICKER
Longest Traveller: DOUBLE RUSH trained by C Hills, Lambourn, 367 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 10-3 Double Rush (IRE), 11-2 Nariko (IRE), 7-1 Jonny Concrete (IRE), 10-1 Bergerac (IRE), 11-1 Vantheman (IRE), 14-1 Strike Red (IRE), 16-1 Trilby (GB), 22-1 Commanche Falls (GB), Kats Bob (GB), 25-1 Eye of Dubai (GB), 28-1 Crown Board (IRE), Venture Capital (GB), 40-1 Moonstone Boy (IRE), 50-1 Sophia’s Starlight (FR), Northern Ticker (IRE) RACE SUMMARY: The majority of winners of this handicap in recent years have been aged 5+, but DOUBLE RUSH is clearly a sprinter on the up and is taken to strike for the Classic generation. The form of the Newmarket race he won in April has worked out well and he did well under the circumstances back from a break at York last month, leaving the strong impression that there is better to come Jonny Concrete also performed with great credit on the Knavesmire last time and he is next on the list ahead of Nariko.

Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race Initially, the weights are set at 9st 7lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Group 3 success.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
Leading course trainer (20-25): J Goldie (60 wins from 451 runners, 13%) runs SPANISH HUSTLE
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): K R Burke (9 wins from 41 runners, 22%) runs ARKINTHESTARS
Longest Traveller: HAPTICS trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 208 miles.
BETTING FORECAST: 3-1 Arkinthestars (GB), Neoma (GB), 4-1 Lord Protector (GER), Spanish Hustle (GB), 15-2 Haptics (FR)
RACE SUMMARY: None of the quintet can be ruled out but it’s hard to side against NEOMA who can race off the same mark as when an excellent recent Pontefract second. Arkinthestars also comes here at the top of her game and is feared most with Spanish Hustle and Haptics also firmly in the picture.

FIVE FURLONGS (5f
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 61 to 80. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards fillies and mares only which have been rated from 49 to 68. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
