SUNDAY 6TH APRIL 2025

WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton – Sussex Day

Welcome to Plumpton’s very own Sussex Day and we are excited to see you all on what is set to be a tremendous day.

We are proud to be part of the Sussex community, and this day aims to showcase many of the things that makes the county so great with a whole host of activities, demonstrations, and entertainment from the local area to accompany an exciting six-race card.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin and Southern Cranes and Access Ltd for their tremendous support throughout the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Henner’s Vineyard, Weatherbys, Crystal Services, Goodoaks Homecare and Friends and Family of Derek Ogden. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 39 runners declared across 6 races worth over £52,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is The Henner’s Vineyard Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Steeple Chase. This race looks to be very competitive with a select field of 4 and we wish all the owners, trainers and horses the very best of luck across the card.

To add to the excitement, we are adding an extra race this year - our charity mascot race! Watch as some of the finest local charity mascots go head-to-head to be crowned Champion of Plumpton.

Featuring the counties finest produce, from artisanal food and drink to handmade crafts. With Morris Dancers, Richie & Dan providing some amazing tunes in our Paddock Bar, and some weird and wonderful animals from the Wildlife Displays team to get up close and personal with, it’s a day to celebrate!

Our next fixture is the highly anticipated Easter Festival, taking place on Sunday, April 20th, and Monday, April 21st. Booking now will ensure you secure the best ticket prices, as this is one of the most popular racing weekends of the year. Both tickets and hospitality options are always in high demand, so early reservations are highly recommended. Secure your place by visiting www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Heart of the Community.

Have a great day.

Best wishes

Jargon

Bit - A piece of metal that sits in the horse’s mouth and is attached to the bridle and reins

Blinkers - A type of headgear fitted to a horse that limits its field of vision, mainly from each side. Blinkers are designed to help horses concentrate in races.

Boxed in - When a horse cannot obtain a clear run during a race due to other horses being in close proximity.

Bridle - A piece of tack that fits over a horse’s head and to which the bit and reins are attached.

Bumper - Also known as a National Hunt Flat race, this race has no obstacles. Used as a way to give horses race experience before tackling hurdles and fences.

Chase - A race run over fences.

Cheekpieces - A form of headgear which consists of pieces of sheepskin placed on either side of the bridle and performs a similar job as blinkers in helping the horse to concentrate.

Clerk of the course - The person responsible for the overall management of a racecourse on a raceday.

Fences - The type of obstacle jumped during a chase race.

Furlong - A unit of measurement. A furlong is an eighth of a mile or a little more than 201 meters.

Going - The underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Going Stick - A device used to measure the underfoot conditions at the racecourse.

Handicap - A type of race in which horses carry different weights depending on their overall rating, which is determined by the handicapper.

Hood - A type of headgear fitted over the horse’s head to cover its ears and muffle the noise of a raceday.

Hurdles - The obstacles jumped during a hurdle race. They are smaller than fences and therefore take less jumping. Sometimes referred to as flights.

Length - The length of a horse from its nose to the start of its tail, and a measurement used to describe the distances between horses at the finish line.

Maiden - A horse who has yet to win a race.

Neck - A measurement used to describe a winning margin in a close finish.

Non-runner - A horse withdrawn from a race for which it had been declared.

Novice - A race for horses who are in their first season in that code of racing.

Photo finish - A close race finish, requiring the raceday judge to consult a photo before declaring the winner.

Pulled up - A horse who is brought to a halt during a race by its jockey.

Pulling - A horse who is keen during a race and wants to go faster than its jockey is allowing.

Pushed out - Describes a horse who has gone clear of its rivals in a race after minimal urging from its jockey.

Staying on - A phrase referring to a horse who finished strongly during the closing stages.

Stewards’ inquiry - An inquiry held at the racecourse on a raceday after any given race

Tongue-tie - A strap used to tie down a horse’s tongue to prevent the tongue getting over the bit which affects a horse’s breathing.

Turn of foot - A term to describe marked acceleration during a race.

Under starter’s orders - Before a race, the starter brings the field of horses into order to prepare them for the start of the race

Weighed in - Every horse in a race has to carry a certain amount of weight. To ensure it does, all jockeys must weight in/out both before and after a race. The ‘weighed in’ announcement made after the race means the result stands.

WALKS LIKE THE MAN won over C&D in February but was unable to follow up at Sandown next time, having been sent off as favourite. The seven-year-old is expected to bounce back eased in class, although recent Hereford scorer The Dream Goes On switches her attentions to fences for the first time and may well provide strong resistance. Brother Boris can chase the pair home.

totewin: Walks Like The Man

toteeachway: The Dream Goes On

Eliza Dolittle hasn’t been able to build on December’s C&D triumph, but she is just 1lb above that winning mark now and must be respected in a race of this nature. A chance can be taken on MELLERAY HILL, who might not have shown a great deal in novice/maiden company but it would come as no surprise were she to step forward now sent handicapping. Time For Tea is also noted.

totewin: Melleray Hill

toteeachway: Eliza Dolittle

3 Anthony Honeyball and Rex Dingle have been amongst the winners lately and Public Enemy, who shaped with promise on his UK/stable debut in February, must feature prominently in calculations. Wild Goose has shown ability in a couple of bumpers but it is GOD OF FIRE who shades preference. Officially rated 85 on the level, he will be difficult to beat if taking to this new discipline. He’s a half-brother to a hurdles winner.

totewin: God Of Fire

toteeachway: Public Enemy

4 DESPEREAUX found only a subsequent winner too strong over C&D last month and compensation could be on the cards. A 3lb higher mark looks fair for Jane Williams’ six-year-old and he can confirm his superiority over the reopposing third Warranty. The Authorized gelding isn’t taken lightly on 4lb better terms with the selection, while Shared isn’t easily dismissed in this heat either.

totewin: Despereaux

toteeachway: Warranty

Having finished second at Sedgefield on Thursday, Tara Iti must enter calculations racing off an unchanged mark. However, those exertions may have left their mark and preference is for ARENAS DEL TIEMPO. The daughter of Footstepsinthesand offered plenty of encouragement when runner-up at Fakenham last month and she’s open to improvement on just her fifth appearance in this sphere. Hardy Buck is the pick of the remainder.

totewin: Arenas Del Tiempo

toteeachway: Tara Iti

There was plenty of encouragement to be taken from AJ’S DIAMOND’s debut second at Warwick 44 days ago and she sets a good standard. Nicky Henderson has a fine record with his bumper horses at this venue (5-13), so Rules debutant Girlfromtheglen merits respect. Jack N Jones is well bred and the six-year-old warrants a check in the market for a shrewd yard.

totewin: Aj’s Diamond

toteeachway: Girlfromtheglen
