MONDAY 21ST OCTOBER 2024

Official race programme £3.00

WELCOME

Welcome to the Bob Champion Cancer Trust Raceday

Our second fixture of the season is the well-known Charity Raceday run alongside the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Bob’s is a remarkable story, as a person, within the sport of racing and even on the big screen! However, I’m sure it is universally agreed that setting up his wonderful Charity that raises thousands for Cancer Research every year is the best achievement. Today we are here to try and raise some more money for that cause and it is just one of many important days for the trust and so do look at their website and feel free to donate and please do have a look at the silent auction in the Final Fence Restaurant entrance.

I would like to thank our Partners; Southern Cranes and Access Ltd, BetGoodwin and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support for the 2024/25 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Mrs Valda Embiricos & Family, Mr Ian Humphries, The Aldaniti Partnership and SIS & the Josh Gifford Family. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

Today we have 68 runners going to post over 8 races with £74k of prize money on offer. Our feature on the track today is our fifth race the £17.5k Nick Embiricos Memorial Handicap Chase which was won by Sacre Coeur, trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Fergus Gillard beating Deeper Blue by 1l. The renewal this year looks strong with eight going to post.

We will also be presenting The Jeffrey Peate Trainers and Jockeys Challenge Final results for the 2023/24 Season after the third race. It was hard fought across both trainers and jockeys with Chris Gordon winning back-to-back titles and Rex Dingle winning for the first time. Congratulations to both and we look forward to an equally compelling season again.

Over the past couple of seasons our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very popular and today we are lucky to have Bright Forecast aka Sunny, who ran under rules 4 times winning twice, and being placed for the other two races, winning £33,000 in prize money. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat.

For this season we have introduced an ambassador to Plumpton Racecourse. Alex Embiricos, daughter of Nick and Valda who owned Aldaniti has been both successful as a jockey and a trainer and now manages Barkfold Manor Stud. Over the past 20 years she has raised a considerable sum for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and become a Trustee. Alex will be working with Plumpton representing the racecourse in a positive light, both online and in-person, while actively promoting the venue and its events.

Looking ahead we have five racedays before Christmas, so make sure you book early to take advantage of our best priced tickets. Christmas is always in high demand, so if you are thinking of booking hospitality for either the 2nd or 16th December make sure you contact our team now, not to miss out.

Have a great day.

Best wishes

1

ROMAN ROY failed to build on a promising debut when fifth in a Kempton bumper on his latest start in February, but Paul Nicholls’ gelding still showed plenty of promise and could be hard to beat in this company. Dotties Star has been running well enough on the Flat of late to suggest he can make the frame, while Clinton Lane is the pick of the remainder. totewin: Roman Roy

toteeachway: Dotties Star

Lord Maher has to be of interest on his debut for these connections having won a Roscommon bumper in June, but marginal preference is for TOUQUET. The five-year-old scored on debut in a bumper at Sandown last November and can be given another chance following his subsequent defeat under a penalty at the same venue. Good Too was useful on the level and is another to note.

totewin: Touquet

3

toteeachway: Lord Maher

4

TIME TO BITE only found one too good when trying to land a double on his most recent outing at Fakenham in June and it would be no surprise to see him make a winning return off the same mark. Kankin failed to fire on his most recent outing but he is a player on his previous success at Fakenham, while Kalkas edges out Jack Doyen to be pick of the rest.

totewin: Time To Bite

toteeachway: Kankin

5

Placed on three of his last four starts in this sphere, ROYAL DEESIDE brings a level of consistency to this open contest and that may be enough to see him get off the mark under suitable conditions. Barenboim has yet to put it together for new connections but must enter calculations, along with Invictus De Brion and Sami Bear, who has dropped 4lb below his last winning mark.

totewin: Royal Deeside

toteeachway: Sami Bear

PRINCE QUALI has no margin for error off top-weight on his seasonal debut, but the way he got the job done when landing the double over 2m at Chepstow earlier in the year gave the impression that he would relish going up in trip and a 6lb rise may not be enough to stop him. A promising second at Kempton when last seen in May, Menaggio is one to monitor for market support on his chasing bow, while Icare Grandchamp looks to build upon a first career success at Newton Abbot in June.

totewin: Prince Quali

toteeachway: Menaggio

Only worn down late in the piece when attempting to land the double at Warwick in May, DAVIDOC had previously been an impressive winner over this C&D and returning to the Sussex track is a big plus as he looks to strike off 1lb higher. A career-best second in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock in May, Tapley can give him plenty to think about, along with For Pleasure, who should be race-fit after a recent spin on the level at Bath.

totewin: Davidoc

toteeachway: Tapley

RIVER TYNE accounted for his nearest rival by over a length when scoring at Fontwell in May and she makes her return to action off 7lb higher. Nick Gifford’s nine-year-old might only need to produce a repeat of that display in order to record a double. Ballyrashane struck at Uttoxeter earlier in the month and it would be no surprise to see him feature again following a 5lb rise, while Hobb’s Delight is another to note on his chase debut.

totewin: River Tyne

toteeachway: Ballyrashane

Belles Benefit was well beaten when second in a stronger event than this at Sedgefield last time, but she might get closer on the downgrade off a 1lb lower rating. However, it may pay to side with BELLA CAVALLA. Neil Mulholland’s six-year-old finished over nine lengths clear of the third when runner-up over 3m2f here last month and was put up 5lb for that display. If she can reproduce that level of form, she could be the one to beat. Luna Run completes the shortlist.

totewin: Bella Cavalla

toteeachway: Belles Benefit

ALDANITI

4... my Dad’s lucky number. At 4pm on the 4th day of the 4th month, in the 4th race carrying the saddle cloth number 4 ALDANITI and Bob Champion won the Grand National. The year was 1981, and to this day is one of the biggest fairytales in horse racing.

ALDANITI had injured his tendon early on in his career, then fractured his hock when placed 3rd in the Hennessey Gold Cup. Later on after coming 3rd in the Cheltenham Gold cup and 2nd in the Scottish National, he broke down so badly at Sandown the vet said he should be put to sleep. Mum and Dad had other ideas and said It was “absolutely out of the question” and Niti came home to Barkfold to begin his rehab.

Meanwhile, Bob was overcoming his greatest battle, to win his fight over testicular cancer. Both horse and jockey were on a long journey to win the world’s greatest horse race, a dream that Bob had had since the very first time he rode Niti in a race.

In the February of 1981 both horse and jockey made a winning return to the racecourse at Ascot in the Whitbread Trial beating Anaglogues Daughter.

Then, finally the day came, both the battle hardened warriors stepped onto the famous turf at Aintree and galloped and jumped and jumped and galloped all the way up the long run in to win a victory that resulted in the birth of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust.

This has raised over £16 million and has made leaps and bounds into research, for testing, treating and returning men back to full health. So this 4th day of the 4th month I am remembering and looking to the future for everyone with great determination and love.

Probable S.P’s: 9-4 Prince Quali (FR), 10-3 Menaggio (IRE), 9-2 Icare Grandchamp (FR), 5-1 Sainte Doctor (FR), 11-2 War Lord (GER)

Cases can be made for most, but the vote goes to WAR LORD, who has race fitness on his side and recent exploits over hurdles suggest he should remain competitive back over the larger obstacles. Prince Quali has been progressive since joining Robert Walford and he rates as a major danger chasing a hat-trick on return, with Icare Grandchamp, who opened his account at Newton Abbot back in the summer, rounding off the shortlist.

The interest and enthusiasm generated by racing’s greatest fairytale led to the foundation of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983. Since then the Trust has raised in excess of £15 million.

The Trust opened the Bob Champion Cancer Research Laboratories in 2000, in conjunction with the Institute of Cancer Research, creating the first male dedicated research centre in Europe The Trust’s second facility, the Bob Champion Research and Educational Building, was opened in February 2015 within the campus of the University of East Anglia. It is within these facilities that their current research projects take place on prostate cancer In the UK it has been estimated that one in every 9 men will develop prostate cancer. The incidence of this disease is also increasing and, within the next decade, is set to overtake colon cancer and even lung cancer to become the most common cancer in men. Prostate cancer, therefore, represents a major national health problem
