HOWDEN CHRISTMAS FA M I LY R A C E D AY Saturday 20th December 2025 O F F I C I A L P R O G R A M M E £ 5 .0 0

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the second day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. This is our final race meeting of 2025 so it is the ideal time to reflect on another magnificent year of racing at Ascot. From Calandagan’s King George and QIPCO Champion Stakes double, to Trawlerman’s Gold Cup heroics in a track record time, and Lazzat and Satono Reve fighting out an international finish to the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, Ascot has again played host to some of the very best equine talent from across the world. Today, Crambo will bid to join Baracouda, Big Buck’s, Reve De Sivola and Paisley Park in becoming the fifth horse to win three or more renewals of the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. It looks an excellent renewal of our Christmas feature race with the progressive Impose Toi as well as the Grade 1 winning Honesty Policy lining up for JP McManus. We are hugely thankful to Howden for their continued support as an Official Partner at Ascot and as title sponsor of this weekend. Meanwhile, we have donated the race name for our final race of 2025, the £125,000 Festive Handicap Hurdle, to the Ascot Rotary Club, a charitable organisation that does so much important work in the local community. There will be a bucket collection for the Ascot Rotary Club today. We also thank the Codd family and Event Exhibition Services Ltd, who are sponsoring our second race and using the opportunity to celebrate Karen’s birthday. We hope they all have a fantastic day with us. Off the track, there is a range of festive entertainment for the whole family including a Christmas Parade before racing and carol singing with the Ascot Brass Band afterwards. The Ascot Schools Photography Competition took place once again this year and some of the entries are on display in the Grandstand. Our guest judge Millie Pilkington is on hand today to present prizes to the worthy winners. All of us at Ascot wish you and your loved ones a restful festive period and we look forward to seeing you again in 2026. Yours sincerely,

Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

WELCOME

R AC I N G PAG E S Your guide to all of today’s races

PAG E S 1 6 - 1 7

1st Race 12.40pm The Howden Graduation Steeple Chase

This afternoon’s opener is a Graduation Chase which is simply a race for horses that have yet to win more than twice over fences. This particular two mile and five furlong contest is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards. Initially, the weights are set according to age and sex before penalties are awarded to previous winners, depending on the class of race won - these range from 4lb to 7lb. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 1

2nd Race 1.15pm The Karen Codd Novices’ Handicap Hurdle Race

This is a two mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-old and upward novices, rated 0-120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAG E S 2 6 - 2 7

3rd Race 1.50pm The Howden Handicap Steeple Chase

This is a two mile and three furlong handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 150. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 135 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 130.

4th Race 2.25pm The Howden Long Walk Hurdle (Grade 1)

The feature race this afternoon is a Grade 1 hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards to be run just over three miles. Grade 1 races are the equivalent of the Premiership in football, quite simply there is no higher level, so these types of races usually attract the crème de la crème from Britain and Ireland and occasionally France. There are no penalties in a Grade 1 race with each runner carrying 11st 7lb. PAG E S 4 0 - 4 2

5th Race 3.00pm The Howden Silver Cup Handicap Steeple Chase (Premier Handicap)

Our peniultimate race is a three mile handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards. The majority of handicaps are designed for horses from within a specific ratings band but this particular race has no rating restrictions attached to it which allows horses with a higher rating to take part. Even so, the higher rated horses must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals, which tends to make open handicaps very competitive races. PAG E S 4 8 - 5 0

6th Race 3.35pm The Ascot Rotary Club Festive Handicap Hurdle Race(Premier Handicap)

Today’s finale is also a Premier Handicap but this time for the hurdlers. It’s a one mile, seven and a half furlong handicap hurdle for four-year-olds and upwards. Like the previous contest, this race has no rating restrictions attached to it so is not restricted to horses within a certain band. As such, higher rated horses can take part but they must still concede weight to their lower rated rivals.

IN MEMORY OF SIR JOHNNY WEATHERBY KCVO

It was with great sadness that we learned about the death of Sir Johnny Weatherby earlier this week. On behalf of everybody at Ascot, Sir Francis Brooke, current Chairman and His Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, said: “All of us at Ascot were deeply saddened by the news of Sir Johnny Weatherby’s death on Thursday, 18th December. “Johnny’s entire working life was devoted to racing in many roles but the 23 years that he spent at Ascot as a Trustee then as Chairman and for nine years as Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot were the most prominent. 1 0 S I R J O H N N Y W E AT H E R B Y

He played a key role in the Grandstand redevelopment project and then took over as Chairman and led the business with great dedication and commitment. “Johnny was a hugely popular figure in racing both at home and abroad where he was a wonderful ambassador for Ascot and British racing. He will be much missed by us all and the wider racing community. “Our deepest sympathies go to his entire family but especially to Sophie, Isabella, Jack, Max and Lara.”

RACE SPONSORS Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

WELCOME FROM DAVID HOWDEN A huge Howden welcome to you all at this very special Christmas race weekend. Over the course of these two days, we’re expecting some 6,000 colleagues to join racegoers alongside their families. A record number and a remarkable reflection of the scale of our business in the UK. You’re all in for a treat today. There are some magical races lined up – with the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle a particular favourite of mine. And whether it’s carol singing around the Grandstand, or a host of Christmasrelated activities, there’s plenty to put you in the festive mood. Even if you don’t pick a winner, this is a fantastic moment to come together and celebrate. At Howden we are celebrating an incredible twelve months. We renewed our partnership with Ascot itself. There’s nothing quite like the drama and joy, the pomp and passion, of a day out at this special place. And now we can look forward to experiencing that excitement for five more years. It’s also been a year when we reaffirmed our commitment to help racing flourish across the globe – extending our partnerships with the Bahrain Turf Club, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and the Victoria Racing Club in Melbourne. Beyond the track, there have been plenty of other sporting success to cheer as well. Who can forget the glorious victory of the British and Irish Lions in front of almost 100,000 fans at the MCG? I didn’t think anything could top the sheer euphoria of watching my horse Running Lion win at Royal Ascot in 2024. But seeing the Howden name emblazoned on the jersey as principal partners of the Lions might just have done it! Success has also flowed from land to sea, where last month I was able to watch EmiratesGBR (with Howden’s name proudly displayed on the hull) do the treble – winning the 2025 Season Grand Final, the Impact League and topping the season standings on points. What a year it’s been! We expect plenty more to come from Howden in 2026 and beyond so watch this space. But, for now, grab a mince pie, pick up a glass of mulled wine and let’s toast the end of 2025 in true Howden style.

MEET ASCOT’S EQUINE AMBASSADORS In collaboration with Retraining of Racehorses’ (RoR) “Horses for Courses” programme With so much demand for Sidey’s services, we thought it only fair for him to share that workload. So, we’ve added Jumps legend Editeur Du Gite as our second Equine Ambassador. He’ll make his debut appearance today on the Cedar Tree Lawn so please pop along to say hello. Sidey meeting members of Maidenhead WI

If you’ve been to Ascot in the last few years, the chances are that you’ll have seen our much-loved Equine Ambassador. His racing name was Side Glance, but he mostly goes by ‘Sidey’ these days. He may be retired from the track, but he’s found a new lease of life thanks to Retraining of Racehorses’ Horses for Courses scheme.

‘Eddie’, as he is known, was a top-class chaser, winning the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase here at Ascot in 2023 and earning over £340,000 in prize money. Phoebe Moore rode Eddie every day when he was a racehorse and his owners, Steve Preston and Trevor Jacobs, kindly gifted him to Phoebe when the decision was made to retire him. Eddie today

Whether it’s in his now-traditional position on the Cedar Tree Lawn, or out in the community at local schools and hospices, Sidey elicits a smile from everyone he meets. The children especially love him and his calm attitude towards their attention. Sidey has done over 400 meet-and-greets as part of our community outreach programme and National Racehorse Week. He has even starred in a Royal Ascot marketing campaign! Eddie in his racing days

Eddie is extremely good with children and has been enjoying cross-country schooling at Hickstead. Phoebe is hoping to get him out in the spring and summer to do more showjumping, hunter trails and showing. He’s already attended the RoR parade at QIPCO British Champions Day and will be with us for all our Saturday Jumps meetings through the winter. Sidey will then return for the Flat season and still be on meet and greet duty throughout the year.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

ASCOT RACECOURSE SUPPORTS FESTIVE GIVING Christmas is a time for giving and that is the philosophy that we follow at Ascot Racecourse by enhancing our regular community and charity programme to focus on helping those that need it most at this time of year. This year that work has included… GIFTS FOR THE HOMELESS On 4th December, members of the Ascot staff team gathered to wrap 100 presents containing thermal gloves, socks, hats and a Greggs voucher for distribution to the weekly drop-in guests at Alma Beacon, Windsor and Slough Homeless our Concern. A great way of connecting our staff with the charities we support. CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY Our annual staff Christmas Jumper Day took place on 9th December, which this year raised funds for Daisy’s Dream, a Reading-based charity providing vital support to children and young people facing bereavement. In total £500 was donated to the charity. ALMA BEACON (WINDSOR HOMELESS PROJECT) – NIGHT SHELTER Through our grant funding programme with Berkshire Community Foundation, we committed to a three-year legacy funding project at the end of 2024 to support Alma Beacon. The charity encompasses three vital projects – the Windsor Homeless Project, Windsor Street Angels and Windsor Foodshare – each providing essential support to vulnerable members of our local community. In January 2025, we were delighted to see the new night shelter open its doors, offering warm food, company as well as a bed and some breakfast to those without a home over the coldest months. Over a 10-week period, a team of volunteers provided 1,050 beds and saw an 82% occupancy rate. The shelter was completely full throughout February and early March and in fact, they had to turn guests away on occasions. In total, 38 individual rough sleepers were accommodated. The shelter opened earlier this year in December to accommodate the increased demand with additional beds being provided throughout the winter until March 2026. CHRISTMAS MEMORIES Today, we are delighted to showcase the winning, second-place and highly commended entries of our Local Schools Photography Competition 2025 which are on display in the Grandstand at Entrance B. We had 13 schools and 57 students enter the competition and our guest judge, royal photographer Millie Pilkington, is here today to meet the finalists and present prizes on the podium. Lots with chances but GRAND GESTE rates the pick of the weights (despite being 2lb out of the handicap) on the back of a fine second at Newcastle and can go one better now to continue the fine form of Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith. Last year’s runner-up Jacks Parrot (second choice) looks primed for another bold showing after a recent spin over hurdles at Bangor, while Top of The Bill and Saladins Son came home 1-2 over C&D last time and seem sure to have a say too in a cracking Tommy Whittle. 1. TIMEFORM SUMMARY

Given the mitigating circumstances PIC ROC did extremely well to get as close as he did when fifth in what is traditionally one of the most competitive handicap chases of the season at Newbury three weeks ago. On that evidence, he surely has a pot such as this in him off his present mark. There won’t be much margin for error, though, with Johnnywho greatly respected back at his optimum trip, while Victtorino, who has won the last two renewals of this, and Henry’s Friend are also feared. 1. A competitive finale and it could go the way of Alan King’s ERNEST GRAY who arrives on the up and is taken to bag a third win of the season with the form of his recent Aintree victory having been well advertised since. Secret Trix should prove suited by this return to 3m and rates a big threat though, while Super Survivor, Idem and Gwennie May Star all need factoring in too. EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries. At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. 4 6 E Q U I N E A N D H U M A N W E L FA R E

Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. MEET THE ASCOT ROTARY CLUB

We are delighted to welcome Ascot Rotary Club members today. In recognition of their work in the community, we have named our 3.35pm race “The Ascot Rotary Club Festive Handicap Hurdle” and have given them the honour of presenting trophies to winning connections. The charity is also our official bucket collector today, so please donate if you are able. You can hear more from the club below.

At a local level, we organise events and raise money to support Ascot and Sunninghill residents. Amongst the organisations we support are the Ascot Day Centre and Thames Hospice. We also work with young people and organise competitions such as ‘Young Musician of the Year’ as well as holding an annual golfing event. We are involved in the Sunninghill Street Fayre and annual wheelbarrow race, which add to our funds. Rotary clubs often benefit from government initiatives such as relief through gift aid which helps to maximise the benefit of our fundraising. The Rotary movement is particularly active in helping communities in Africa though Water Aid. We are always interested in recruiting new members. By becoming a member, you are giving back to the community and helping to make the Ascot community a thriving place to live and work. You will also join a club where you will make new friends and enjoy a plethora of social activities. If you are interested, why not find out more by contacting us via our website rotary-ribi.org and then selecting Ascot (District 1090) to send us a message.

Ascot Rotary Club is part of a national and international network of clubs. There are over 1.2m Rotarians across the world. Today it is a thriving part of the Ascot community with its members devoted both to supporting local events and raising much needed funding for local organisations, as well as supporting national and international efforts to support communities in need. HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.

ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality. In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
