HOWDEN CHRISTMAS F R I D AY R A C E D AY Friday 19th December 2025 O F F I C I A L P R O G R A M M E £ 5 .0 0
CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Welcome to the first day of the Howden Christmas Racing Weekend. It has been a thrilling year at Ascot with some sensational performances over the last 12 months. From Jonbon and Pic D’Orhy taking Grade 1 prizes over fences, through to Royal Ascot featuring breathtaking wins from the likes of Field Of Gold, Ombudsman and Trawlerman and then on to Calandagan’s famous double in the King George and the QIPCO Champion Stakes. It has been wonderful to see so many of the world’s best racehorses performing at Ascot this year. Earlier this month we were pleased to announce that our prize money in 2026 will be a record £19.4 million. That represents an increase of £1.65 million on 2025 and over half of the races that we host in 2026 will have a higher total prize fund than this year. The impact of Ascot Racecourse Supports, our community programme, has reached new levels in 2025. It is very rewarding to now reflect on all that engagement with many of the year’s highlights featured in today’s racecard. The Ascot Schools Photography Competition took place once again this year and some of the entries are on display in the Grandstand. Tomorrow, our guest judge Millie Pilkington will present prizes to the worthy winners. Today’s feature race is the Grade 2 Howden Noel Novices’ Steeple Chase, which was won last year in dramatic style by Mark Of Gold, giving trainer Gary Moore his second victory in the race. The second that day, Personal Ambition lines up again with previous Ascot winners Jax Junior and No Questions Asked also among the quality field. Our thanks go to Howden for their continued support of racing at Ascot as an Official Partner as well as being title sponsor of this weekend. Across the two days they are hosting and entertaining many staff members and their families, and we are delighted to welcome them all. Tomorrow is our final race meeting of 2025, headlined by the Grade 1 Howden Long Walk Hurdle. After the last race there will be the usual carol singing in the Grandstand and we hope to see you then. Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman
WELCOME

1st Race 12.40pm The Howden Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle Race
4th Race 2.25pm The Ascot Shop Handicap Hurdle Race
Today’s opener is a two mile, five and a half furlong handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rivals. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170. PAG E S 2 0 - 2 2
2nd Race 1.15pm The Howden Maiden Hurdle Race
The term ‘maiden’ inspires thoughts of damsels in distress but in horse racing terms it takes on a different meaning. When a horse is referred to as a maiden, be it a colt or a filly, it simply means that they have yet to win a race. Many of the runners aged four-years-old and upwards in this two mile, five and a half furlong race will still be inexperienced over hurdles and almost certainly improve for the racecourse experience that they gain today. PAG E S 2 6 - 2 7
3rd Race 1.50pm The Howden Novices’ Limited Handicap Steeple Chase
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. Although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season, they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October. This particular two mile and one furlong novices’ handicap steeple chase is for horses aged four-years-old and upwards which have not won more than two steeple chases.
Our fourth race is a one mile, seven and a half furlongs handicap hurdle race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 120 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 115. PAG E S 3 6 - 3 7
5th Race 3.00pm The Howden Noel Novices’ Steeple Chase (Grade 2)
Today’s feature, a two miles and three furlongs steeplechase, is a Grade 2 race for novices. It is restricted to horses aged four-years-old and upwards and initially, the weights are set according to sex with fillies and mares carrying 7lb less than their male rivals. Penalties are then awarded dependant on previous victories over fences. PAG E S 4 0 - 4 2
6th Race 3.35pm The King Edward VII Ascot Membership Open National Hunt Flat Race (Listed Race)
As the title suggests, a National Hunt Flat Race, or ‘bumper’ as they are more commonly referred, is a race that takes place without any fences or hurdles. Designed for young horses that, it is presumed, will go jumping in time. This particular contest is restricted to horses aged four and five, and will be run over one mile, seven and a half furlongs. As this is a Listed Race, expect some smart types to line up here and be useful hurdles/chasers in the future.

21. Official BHA Rating The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
WELCOME FROM DAVID HOWDEN A huge Howden welcome to you all at this very special Christmas race weekend. Over the course of these two days, we’re expecting some 6,000 colleagues to join racegoers alongside their families. A record number and a remarkable reflection of the scale of our business in the UK. You’re all in for a treat today. There are some magical races lined up and with the carol singing around the Grandstand after racing it’s sure to put you in the festive mood. Even if you don’t pick a winner, this is a fantastic moment to come together and celebrate. At Howden we are celebrating an incredible twelve months. We renewed our partnership with Ascot itself. There’s nothing quite like the drama and joy, the pomp and passion, of a day out at this special place. And now we can look forward to experiencing that excitement for five more years. It’s also been a year when we reaffirmed our commitment to help racing flourish across the globe – extending our partnerships with the Bahrain Turf Club, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and the Victoria Racing Club in Melbourne. Beyond the track, there have been plenty of other sporting success to cheer as well. Who can forget the glorious victory of the British and Irish Lions in front of almost 100,000 fans at the MCG? I didn’t think anything could top the sheer euphoria of watching my horse Running Lion win at Royal Ascot in 2024. But seeing the Howden name emblazoned on the jersey as principal partners of the Lions might just have done it! Success has also flowed from land to sea, where last month I was able to watch EmiratesGBR (with Howden’s name proudly displayed on the hull) do the treble – winning the 2025 Season Grand Final, the Impact League and topping the season standings on points. What a year it’s been! We expect plenty more to come from Howden in 2026 and beyond so watch this space. But, for now, grab a mince pie, pick up a glass of mulled wine and let’s toast the end of 2025 in true Howden style.

EQUINE AND HUMAN WELFARE AT ASCOT RACECOURSE
The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. For Jumps racing, we introduced one-fit padded hurdles at the start of the 2018 season, becoming the first Grade 1 track to do so. These are now widely used across Jumps racing and have seen the risk of falling reduce by 11 per cent while also resulting in fewer superficial injuries. At the start of the 2022/23 season, the wood and vinyl padding on the take-off boards, guard rails and top boards for all chase fences and hurdles were switched from orange to white. This was part of an industry-wide project following research from Exeter University that showed white provides increased contrast and visibility for horses, leading to improved jumping performance. More generally, four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. 2 8 E Q U I N E A N D H U M A N W E L FA R E
Significant changes were made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006. The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn also has equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses. Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys. The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy. TIMEFORM SUMMARY
An interesting race for the grade, with plenty of pace likely. The returning LET IT RAIN appeals most, his bumper/hurdle form has plenty of substance and he’s likely to prove better than his opening mark. Dance and Glance has been shaping well in higher grades and will be suited by a greater emphasis on stamina here, while strong-travelling Walkadina can be seen to better effect in a big-field 2m handicap. 2. TIMEFORM SUMMARY
The one who appeals most is NO QUESTIONS ASKED, who was sure-footed when making a winning start in this sphere over C&D last month. He subsequently improved when runner-up in what was probably a strong renewal of the 2 1/2m John Francome at Newbury, looking for all the world that he would go on to win that Grade 2 when easing to the front at the third-last before being essentially outstayed by the winner. Steel Ally and Jax Junior are similarly promising types and are feared most in that order. 1. NO QUESTIONS ASKED (IRE)

HORSE WELFARE At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
ABANDONMENT POLICY In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances: a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund. b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality. In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
