WELCOME

Welcome to Sussex Day

Welcome to Plumpton’s very own Sussex Day and we are excited to see you all on what is set to be a tremendous day.

We are proud to be part of the Sussex community and this day aims to showcase many of the things that makes the county so great with a whole host of activities, demonstrations, and entertainment from the local area to accompany an exciting seven-race card.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, ExTech, Bluebells, Weatherbys, Barkfold Manor Stud, Friends and Family of Dorothy Bridle and Hickstead and we wish them all a tremendous day. We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 76 runners declared across 7 races worth over £66,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is the Class 3 £17,500 The ExTech Racing to the Cloud! Handicap Hurdle Race. Last year the race was won by Crossing The Bar beating Ramo by a neck. Today’s renewal looks to be very competitive with a field of 12 going to post including Transmission, winner of the inaugural Sussex Stayers Handicap Hurdle on 7th January. Who could forget the remarkable recovery made by Joe Anderson when winning that race, it was front news on many TV channels. We wish all the owners, trainers and horses the very best of luck across the card.

Featuring the counties finest produce, from artisanal food and drink to handmade crafts. With Morris Dancers, face painting, Queue the Audio providing some amazing tunes in our Paddock Bar, and some weird and wonderful animals (including Meerkats, a Barn Owl, Geckos and more) from the Wildlife Displays team to get up close and personal with, it’s a day to celebrate!

Looking ahead, we have our Season Finale, 12th May. This is one not to miss so make sure you book your tickets for our finale as it is a real chance to let your hair down. There are Best Dressed competitions for Ladies, Gents and Children with some fantastic prizes. After the racing, there will be live music so make sure you stick around for some après-racing fun! General admission tickets start from £15 with hospitality starting from £80 and can be booked or enquired by visiting www.plumptonracecourse.co.uk

Have a great day.

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse.

All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection:

- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. Departs

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

ABINGWORTH gained his second victory over fences at Wincanton on his latest start and the six-year-old, who was raised 2lb by the handicapper, appears capable of having more to offer. Fame And Fun improved to score over C&D a fortnight ago and is likely to be the strongest threat to the selection, while the return to a left-handed track will benefit the cause of Magistrato.

totewin: Abingworth

toteeachway: Fame And Fun RACE

TOWNHILL had excuses when finishing fourth at Sedgefield last time and Tom Lacey’s gelding is expected to take advantage of dropping back a couple of furlongs in distance. Fortune Forever stepped forward when runner-up at Taunton at the end of last month and has to be a key player based on that performance. Others for the shortlist include Kick Up A Storm, who sports cheekpieces for the first time, and Masterdream.

RAMENSKY showed ability on the Flat for William Haggas and was purchased for 23,000 pounds following his victory in a Goodwood seller in August. Now in the care of Emma Lavelle, he has been found an excellent opportunity to make a winning start in this new discipline. A wind operation is likely to bring about improvement from Davidoc, while Sanitiser and Let’s Sail Away are others who warrant a place on the shortlist.

totewin: Ramensky

NORTON HILL had little difficulty in completing a double when romping home at Hereford in December. A further 7lb rise in the ratings looks far from insurmountable for Anthony Honeyball’s charge and a hat-trick could be on the cards. The biggest threat may emerge from the reappearing Broomfields Cave, who regained the winning thread at Uttoxeter in October. Although Moka De Vassy isn’t the most consistent, he lurks on an attractive mark and first-time blinkers could see the six-year-old get involved. totewin: Norton Hill toteeachway: Broomfields Cave RACE

Last-time-out Hereford scorer Crystal Moon got the better of a subsequent winner and he likely has more to come over fences. However, a 12lb rise for that victory may be enough to thwart the sevenyear-old in his bid to land a double, with December C&D victor MILAN BRIDGE edging the vote. Sarah Humphrey’s charge proved strong at the finish that day and he looks the better handicapped of the pair racing off only 5lb more. The hat-trick seeking Born At Midnight is sure to have his supporters too. totewin: Milan Bridge toteeachway: Crystal Moon RACE 6

Narrowly denied on his sole previous start here over 2m last December, TELLMESOMETHINGOOD has not shown much in the interim. That said, he has dropped back to that previous mark of 98, which could spark a revival. A consistent sort for most of last summer, Shandancer is one to note on his return for a new yard, while Highway One O Five has the potential to improve going further up in trip. totewin: Tellmesomethingood toteeachway: Shandancer

An eye-catcher on her debut at Huntingdon, CRAZIERTHANDAISY could not justify strong market support but compensation may await here. Nicky Henderson’s charge is preferred to the wellbred newcomer Hello Cello, and Jakana, who only got going late in the piece on her debut at Ludlow last November. Getaways Gift may have been well held first time out at Wincanton, but the form of that race has worked out well in the interim and she is open to improvement.

LAST MEETING REVIEW

Our last meeting was a double header over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. The action began on the Sunday as the Chris Gordon trained King William Rufus jumped very well to take home the win in the opening maiden. It took him a while, but he finally has that first win at the ninth time of asking. It was a dominant performance from Kansas City Star in the next as the gelding seemed to relish the improved ground and made light work of his opposition, finishing nine and a half lengths of the favourite Alto Alto in second.

Sea Invasion opened his account at the fourth time of asking under rules with the gelding jumping very well throughout the contest to win by a comfortable seven lengths and get trainer Chris Gordon his second win of the day after a great ride from his son Freddie in the saddle. The day’s fourth contest gave us a much closer finish with Christian Williams’ Cap Du Nord keeping on well to take the lead from Makin’yourmindup in the final strides, winning by just a head.

Chris Gordon got his third as Our Champ landed the BetGoodwin Sussex Champion Hurdle, which also marked the second win of the day for Rex Dingle in the saddle. Going off as the market leader, he had found success here before but travelled very strongly here to win by an impressive 11 lengths. It was two for two for favourites as Fame And Fun just did enough to pick up the win in the sixth race. Despite some less than fluent jumping the gelding did well to hold off the fast finishing I See You Well. The day’s action was rounded off with a third winning favourite in a row as Paul Nicholls picked up his double for the day. Emailandy made light work of the race, racing prominently throughout before storming past his rivals late on to get the win. The first race on the second day of the meeting saw Joe Tizzard get off to a flyer as Scarface took home the Sussex Champion Handicap Chase. Ridden on the day by Brendan Powell, the gelding had been in impressive form earlier in the season, notching successes here in January and in a premier handicap at Sandown in March. He jumped well here, never looking threatened by his rivals. The day’s second saw Rollo’s Kingdom pick up the first win of his career at the twelfth time of asking. He was a touch messy early on but bounced back well to win comfortably under conditional jockey Ben Godfrey.

We had our first favourite of the day in the third as Hilltown took the win for trainer Seamus Mullins. The gelding was a fine second here in March when last seen and easily went one better here. Racing prominently throughout, he soon went clear from two out to win by a massive 13 lengths. Next up was the maiden which saw ex points winner Kaituna River get his first win under rules in impressive style. The Alex Hales trained gelding was ridden here by Harry Cobden and looked a level above his rivals, comfortably dispatching them and finishing three and a quarter lengths ahead of the 1/3 market leader Saladins Son who was perhaps flattered by the distance.

Sheena West’s Macari picked up the win in the fifth race. Ridden by Marc Goldstein, the fouryear-old had been an impressive second here last time out in February and went one better here, picking up his first win in Novice company ahead of the well backed favourite Soir De Gala in second. The favourite did manage to get the job done in the penultimate race of the weekend as El Muchacho got the win for Harriet Dickin. It was his first win for his new yard, and it couldn’t have been a better start as he kept on very well to get the win. Ending the weekend’s action was the bumper which saw Emma Lavelle’s Bluey pick up the win. A winner in Irish points when last seen, this was her first run under rules, and she looks like she could be one to follow.

Beaufort West is also newly blinkered under seven-pound claiming rider ThomasinaEyston.Hehasworktodo

Tellmesomethingood bettered his recent efforts when fourth at Fakenham last month and could be the main danger, ahead of Paddy de Pole.
