FIXTURES
WELCOME
A warm welcome to you all this evening for our Precon Racenight. Evening racing is a key feature of our fixture list here at Hamilton Park and this is always one of our favourites with the combination of great racing and music providing an occasion for us all to enjoy.
A big thank you goes to all of our sponsors this evening; Precon, Patersons of Greenoakhill, PDM Buildbase, European Breeders Fund, Molton Brown and our very own Hampton by Hilton Hamilton Park Hotel. I would also like to welcome the Lighthouse Club construction industry charity who are with us in the Club Lawn marquee tonight and are raising monies to provide emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families. I wish our valued sponsors, partners and all of your guests an enjoyable evening with us.
Tonight’s racing has attracted competitive fields across the card with our feature race, the £30,000 Precon Braveheart Handicap Stakes getting underway at 7.15pm. Top of the weights is Get Shirty who won this race for trainer David O’Meara back in 2022, who is sure to face stiff competition from recent winner Capital Theory, who won the Buttonhook handicap by over four lengths earlier in May over a similar distance Iain Jardine will also be hoping to build on a strong start to his Hamilton Park campaign that saw him pick up two winners a fortnight ago Iain has four runners this evening including 2023 course and distance winner Geremia in our feature race as well as Catherine Chroi, who will be stepping up to Class 4 in the 6.40pm William Wallace handicap having taken each of eight previous wins around the country at Class 6.
Away from the track action, the team here at Hamilton is proud to be supporting #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek which is a national campaign run by the Mental Health Foundation, with the focus this year on movement. One of the most important things we can do to help protect our mental health is regular movement and our team have been ‘walking and talking’ together around the track this week to benefit their own wellbeing. Our bodies and our minds are connected, so looking after ourselves physically also helps us prevent problems with our mental health. Racing Welfare leads racing’s engagement with this important awareness campaign and details on how to reach out to them for support are included within this evenings racecard.
After racing this evening I hope many of you will stay on to enjoy a high energy set of dance and club classics mixed by Stereofunk DJ Stevie Lennon, who will be taking us through until bars close at 10.45pm.
Have a great night and I hope you back a winner or two!
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

Racing Jargon Buster
Do not be put off by the weird terms you may hear on the racetrack. Like any traveller in a strange country, the novice racegoer will soon pick up a smattering of the language, and then rapidly become fluent. The following might help those racegoers keen to enhance their language skills.
ACCUMULATOR bet involving two or more selections in different races: winnings from one are placed on the next
ALLOWANCE is the weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
ALL WEATHER RACING flat racing which takes place on an artificial surface
AMATEUR (rider) on racecards, their names are prefixed by Mr, Mrs, Captain, etc., to indicate their amateur status
APPRENTICE young jockey tied by annually renewed contract to a licensed trainer while he or she is learning the business of race-riding
BACKWARD used of a horse which needs time to mature
CLAIMER of a race: a claiming race; of a jockey: an apprentice COLT male, ungelded horse up to four years old
COURSE SPECIALIST horse which tends to run well at a particular track
DAM mother of a horse
DISTANCE the length of a race: 5 furlongs is the minimum and the 4 1⁄2 miles of the Grand National the longest. Also, the margin by which a horse wins or is beaten by the horse in front: this ranges from a short head to ‘by a distance’ (more than 30 lengths); a ‘length’ is measured from the horse’s nose to the start of its tail
DISTANCE an unmarked point 240 yards from the winning post (thus ‘below the distance’ means closer home than that point)
DRAW for flat racing only, describes a horse’s position in the starting stalls, drawn randomly the day before
EVENS or EVEN MONEY when your stake exactly equals your winnings - thus £5 at evens wins a further £5
FILLY female horse up to four years old
FOAL horse of either sex from the time of its birth until 1 January the following year
FURLONG 220 yards (one eighth of a mile)
GELDING castrated horse
GOING the description of conditions underfoot on the racecourse. Official Jockey Club going reports progress as follows: Heavy - soft - good to soft - good - good to firm - firm - hard
GREEN (of a horse) inexperienced
HAND unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured, at the shoulder
JOLLY betting parlance for the favourite in a race - the horse with the shortest odds
JUDGE official responsible for declaring the finishing order of a race and the distances between the runners
JUVENILE two-year-old horse
hamilton-park.co.uk

MAIDEN horse which has not won a race
MARE female horse five years and over
MONKEY betting parlance for £500
ODDS ON odds where the winnings are less than the stake (which is of course returned to you): thus a winning £2 bet at 2-1 on wins you £1
OFF THE BIT/OFF THE BRIDLE describes a horse being pushed along by his jockey, losing contact with the bit in his mouth
ON THE BIT/ON THE BRIDLE describes a horse going well within himself, still having a grip on the bit
OVER THE TOP where a horse is said to have gone if he has passed his peak for the season
PACE ‘up with the pace’ means close to the leaders; ‘off the pace’ means some way behind the leaders
PADDOCK area of the racecourse incorporating the pre-parade ring, parade ring and winner’s enclosure
PATTERN the elite races, divided in Flat racing into Groups One, Two, Three and Listed
PENALTY weight added to the allotted handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were originally published
PHOTO FINISH electronic photographic device which determines minimal distances in a close finish
PLATE shoe worn by horse for racing
PONY betting parlance for £25
RULE 4 betting rule covering deductions made from winning bets if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed but before the ‘Under Starter’s Orders’ signal; the amount deducted depends on the price of the withdrawn horse
RUN FREE describes a horse going too fast, usually early in the race, to allow it to settle
SCOPE the potential for physical development in a horse
SIRE father of a horse
SPREAD A PLATE when a racing plate or horseshoe becomes detached from an animal’s hoof, this sometimes causes a delay while the horse is re-shod

YANKEE combination bet involving four selections in different races: six doubles, four trebles and one four-horse accumulator - eleven bets
YEARLING horse of either sex from 1st January to 31st December of the year following its birth

THE PDM BUILDBASE SCOTLAND APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Mental Health Awareness Week
13 - 19 May 2024
MOVEMENT
Racing staff and racecourse staff are wearing green ribbons today to show their commitment to raising awareness and ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!
Racing Welfare is committed to providing accessible, tailored mental health and wellbeing support services to all of racing’s workforce.

about FIVE FURLONGS (5f abt 7yds) (1000m)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

THE PRECON WILLIAM WALLACE HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a six furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 59to 78. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 75 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.

Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): R Fahey (6 wins from 33 runners, 18%) runs ROCK OPERA

RACE SUMMARY: CATHERINE CHROI recorded a fifth win from her last 6 starts at Leicester last Saturday and Iain Jardine’s mare looks to have been well placed again to bag another victory. She can get the better of Iris Dancer, who looks to be coming to the boil based on her Ayr effort last month, while Quintus Arrius, whose return was far more encouraging than 2 starts for this stable last year, rounds off the shortlist.

THE PRECON BRAVEHEART HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for threeyear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

ONE MILE about 68 YARDS (8f abt 68yds) (1600m)
THE HAMPTON BY HILTON HAMILTON PARK HOTEL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60. Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (19-24): J Goldie (40 wins from 358 runners, 11%) runs ZUMAATY
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): I Jardine (4 wins from 31 runners, 13%) runs MAJESTIC NEWLAW and SHOWMEDEMONEY
Longest Traveller: CLOTHERHOLME trained by A Duffield, Leyburn, 162 miles.

RACE SUMMARY: WE STILL BELIEVE and Clotherholme both encountered traffic problems on their latest starts and, granted better luck this time, they could come to the fore in this open-looking handicap Preference is for the former, who could benefit from this drop back in trip, particularly if there’s a strong pace to aim at. Kristal Klear and the selection’s stablemate &Shahnaz are others with claims.
