We are delighted to welcome you all back to Perth Racecourse our last fixture in May for Edinburgh Gin Ladies Day.
Today’s eight race programme is highly competitive with currently a minimum of eight runners in every race. We welcome back Sean Bowen after just missing out on the Jockeys Title last season and he will be doing everything he can to win the championship this year
The feature race today, The Edinburgh Gin Seaside Handicap Hurdle over 2m, features a competitive heat of northern trainers with southern raids from Olly Murphy and Nigel Hawke for the £12,000 prize.
We are grateful for the support of all today’s sponsors which, in addition to the headline sponsor Edinburgh Gin, include DM Hall. DM Hall are our local Chartered Surveyors and we are delighted to welcome them back.
We’d also like to thank the connections of all the runners today, we are grateful that you have chosen to come and run your horses at Perth, and we are looking forward to some terrific action on the track. Finally, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our racegoers, we are delighted you are here.
Good luck and may the winners be a plenty.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
Once a horse’s ability has been assessed by the Official BHA Handicapper it is given an official rating. This is an assessment that determines how much weight it shall carry compared to the other runners. In simple terms a horse rated 100 carries 2lbs less than a horse rated 102. A rating over 130 is well above average and the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup is normally rated over 160 Most handicap races have an upper rating limit to encourage runners of similar ability to take part and make a competitive race e.g 0-110, and a 28lb weight-range
One Fit Padded Hurdle: The ‘One Fit’ design is a modified hurdle frame with a custom fitting close-cell foam pad replacing the traditional birch. The hurdle was developed with the objective of reducing both the faller rate and the risk of injury as the result of a fall. They are 3ft high and placed in the ground at an attractive angle to encourage horses to jump them fluently
At Perth there are five flights of Hurdles on the course Eight are jumped in a two mile race, nine in a race over two miles and five furlongs and eleven in a race over three miles.
Steeplechase fences are made from hardwood frames stuffed tightly with birch When making a fence the birch is packed in at a height of approximately 6ft, then cut down to a maximum height of 4ft 6”. There are five ‘plain fences’ on the course at Perth and two ‘open ditches’ An Open Ditch is the same height as a plain fence but has a small ditch in front of the fence to make them a bigger test for the horse and rider
At Perth there are two open ditches on the course, the first fence in the straight and the first down the back straight. Perth is one of the last remaining racecourses to have a Water Jump, this is situated in front of the main Grandstand and is much smaller than the other fences, with a 6ft wide water jump behind a small birch fence. There are eight steeplechase fences on the course Twelve are jumped in a race over two miles, fifteen over two miles and four furlongs and nineteen in races over three miles.
These races are designed to provide a fair and competitive contest before a horse is allocated a weight, according to his ability, to run in a Handicap These races are therefore normally for young horses aged from 3 to 5-y-o. As a 5-y-o is deemed to be stronger than a 3-y-o he/she will be made a to carry a little more weight. Once a horse has won a weight for age race he/she will be asked to carry a ‘penalty’; this is normally an additional 7lbs. Once a horse has won or run three times in a Weight for Age race he can be assessed and given a weight in a Handicap Race.
In the event of racing being abandoned before the first race has been run, all ticket holders should retain tickets Information regarding refunds or transfers will be posted to pre-paid tickets holders within seven days of the abandonment; all other applications should be made to the racecourse office within the same period. In the event of racing being abandoned after the first race has been run, all badge holders should retain their passes. Refunds will not be made unless at the discretion of the management.
The Management reserves the right to refuse admission to, or expel any person from, the racecourse without assigning a reason for doing so, and does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to persons or to their property
A cash machine is available within the Grandstand Enclosure by the Main Entrance and The Barn.
Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life, both during their racing career and afterwards. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries, and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected round any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
The procedures for Claiming and Selling Races have changed. No Claims will be accepted on the racecourse No additional period is allowed for Friendly Claims. Registered Owners, Licensed and Permitted trainers may claim by telephone, to Weatherbys on 01933 303080

MEDIEVAL GOLD was a promising second on his Market Rasen hurdle debut in February and is taken to go one better now. Al Medix is an interesting newcomer from the Stuart Crawford yard and a market move for him would make him a possible big threat. Ravenscraig Castle is on a long losing run on the Flat but is talented enough to make his presence felt in a race like this if taking to hurdling.

Plenty in with a squeak but the vote goes to ANAMANDA, who showed more than previously in this sphere after 3 months off when fourth in an Ayr maiden last month and given her Flat form, she should be capable of better still now handicapping. Villainess opened her account at Stratford last month and she could kick on now up and running, with French Highlands and Celestial Fashion another couple fancied to go well, too.

Racing staff and racecourse staff are wearing green ribbons today to show their commitment to raising awareness and ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health. But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!
Racing Welfare is committed to providing accessible, tailored mental health and wellbeing support services to all of racing’s workforce.

WAL BUCK’S is very much built for chasing and ran with credit over hurdles last time, so he’s potentially capable of making a winning start over the larger obstacles. Grand Voyage and Leitrim Chief are both solid alternatives.

CAIRNDHU is from the family of a Champion Hurdle winner and Brian Hughes is booked, so it’s worth taking a chance that he has enough ability to make a winning start in a race that’s unlikely to prove strong. Takt de Touques is an obvious player having scored in determined fashion on Rules debut here recently and Magna Victor could do better
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £215,972 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd March to 23rd June 2024
Racing’s top priority is the safety and welfare of horse and rider People join the racing industry because they share a genuine love for horses. Like most sports, racing carries risks, however, we work to ensure that no death or injury occurs which could have been prevented. Horses have the right to a decent and fulfilling life. We are committed to minimising risks, dealing quickly and humanely with injuries and maintaining the highest possible quality of life for the animals in our care.
It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the course This does not reflect the severity of the injury, but allows the vet some privacy in which to administer treatment and provides the horse with a calm environment in which to make a recovery Please therefore do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse
