Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to the Starlight Charity Raceday.
My thanks go to our headline sponsor, Starlight, who have been a valued partner at Newbury for many years. Starlight use the power of play to make the experience of illness and treatment better for children and their families. For over 30 years they have helped thousands find hope after a child is diagnosed with a serious illness. The charity will be conducting a bucket collection this afternoon an hour before and an hour after the last race and I am sure they would greatly appreciate any contribution you’re able to make for such a worthy cause.
A grateful thanks also go to Starlight’s supporters and sponsors: The Ultimate Travel Company, Unibet, ARC, Sky Sports Racing and Coolmore Stud. Thank you also to Greenshields JCB for sponsoring today’s penultimate race.
After this afternoon’s racing our attention turns to tomorrow’s Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day. As always, you can expect top quality action on the track including the Trade Nation London Gold Cup and the feature race of the day, the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes. This year’s Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day will see five of the day’s races feature in the World Pool, offering our racegoers access to huge international pools by betting through the Tote – our thanks go to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for their support in making this happen. Tickets are available for tomorrow’s action online until 11:59pm tonight and then on the gate from 11:30am tomorrow.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us. I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon and that we will see you back here again tomorrow for the return of the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury – you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet –‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners - first place only; between five and seven runners - first and second place; eight runners and over - first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) - first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth - this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard.

Racing staff and racecourse staff are wearing green ribbons today to show their commitment to raising awareness and ending the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year is Movement: Moving more for our mental health. Movement is important for our mental health But so many of us struggle to move enough. Going for a walk in your neighbourhood or around your workplace, putting on your favourite music and dancing around the living room, chair exercises when you’re watching television – it all counts!
Racing Welfare is committed to providing accessible, tailored mental health and wellbeing support services to all of racing’s workforce.
