WELCOME

Welcome to Plumpton – Spring Jumps Raceday

Our sixth fixture of the new year and we are proud to host our Spring Jumps Race Day.

I would like to thank our Partners; BetGoodwin, Southern Cranes and Access Ltd and Strong Flavours for their tremendous support throughout the 2023/24 Season, along with today’s sponsors, Crystal Services, Dean Wilson LLP, Weatherbys, Howden and William Hill. We wish you all have a tremendous day.

I would also like to welcome the IJF who have over 130 beneficiaries attending today in the Final Fence Restaurant. The IJF are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and provide important support in a prompt and sympathetic manner to those jockeys past or present who are injured, unable to ride or generally in need. The Plumpton Executive thank you for selecting Plumpton and wish you all a tremendous day. We have a cracking card for punters to get their teeth into today, with 34 runners declared across 6 races worth over £64,000 of prize money. Our feature on the track today is our fourth race the £20,000 Class 3 Howden Handicap Hurdle Race. This race has 7 runners, the quality is strong and I am sure the race will be competitive.

Reminiscing on past histories at Plumpton, 45 years ago on this very date King Charles (was HRH Prince Of Wales) rode Long Wharf to finish second in the Mad Hatters private sweepstake behind Classified ridden by TV presenter Derek Thompson. I was fortunate to catch up with Derek Thompson earlier this week and Thommo mentioned that it was a day he would never forget! The world’s press converged on Plumpton and a certain Brough Scott was in the commentary box. Thommo’s breeches were a bit tight, and he remarked that his flies popped open down at the 2 mile start and one of the headlines in the following days read “the outsider who flashed past the Prince”! Thommo said HRH was very gracious in defeat. Thommo’s mount Classified went on to become a very good horse and was placed in the Grand National and Thommo felt very proud to have had a 100% strike rate for Nicky Henderson!

Our Retired Racehorse Stable has been very well received and today we are lucky to have De Barley Basket, who ran 18 times during his career winning 5 races and being placed a further 5 times. Pop down and give him a polo and a pat. De Barley Basket is owned by Alex Embiricos who is also Plumpton Racecourses Ambassador.

Our next fixture will be Monday 11th March, Cheltenham Preview Raceday so if you are thinking of booking tickets or hospitality for any of these days make sure you visit our website or contact one of our team now. With Easter early this year, Sunday 31st March and Monday 1st April, if you are thinking of booking make sure you do this early as this is a popular racing weekend with both tickets and hospitality always in high demand.

Have a great day at Plumpton, Heart Of The Community.

Best wishes

CUSTOMER INFORMATION

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by:

Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted.

On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late Pay Service

If you need to claim winnings from an on-course bookmaker after a raceday, please send your ticket and covering letter to the following address:

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

There are many ways that you can pick your selection:

- Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses.

- Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper.

- Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off .

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’. If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win;

(b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2;

(c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2;

(d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3;

(e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3;

(f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and

(g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Official BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS

LOOKING AS YOU ARE sets the standard in this contest with a rating of 108 after getting off the mark at Ludlow last month. Alex Hales’ five-year-old now has a 7lb penalty to carry, but brings the best form to the table and looks the one to beat. Coin Basket was victorious in her only bumper start at Fakenham in April 2022 and is an interesting contender on her return from a long absence and first start over timber. Of the remainder, Walkinthecotswolds makes the most appeal.

totewin: Looking As You Are toteeachway: Coin Basket

RACE 2

RACE 3

DUHALLOW TOMMY has the perfect record over fences in two starts, with both victories coming at this track and a combined winning distance of 32 lengths. Toby Lawes’ gelding only has a 10lb higher rating in comparison with his mark before those successes and he looks difficult to oppose. Chance A Tune won very nicely at Hereford and could go close again under a 7lb penalty. Godot seems like a stronger contender than Old Painless in the fight for third.

totewin: Duhallow Tommy toteeachway: Chance A Tune

4

RACE

Letthedustsettle completed a Catterick brace prior to occupying the runner-up berth at Newcastle, and he has a very solid chance off a 1lb higher mark. However, the vote goes to HASTY PARISIAN, who found only one too strong when having his sights lowered over C&D last month and has been dropped 2lb. He runs off a career-low mark and could get his head back in front. Artistic Endeavour has put in solid efforts in all his starts this season and is another to note.

totewin: Hasty Parisian toteeachway: Letthedustsettle

RACE 5

A 2lb rise for Mr Freedom’s close-up second to a progressive rival at Taunton looks more than fair and he should give another good account of himself now dropped into 0-125 company. However, he may have to play second fiddle once more, with CLASSIC LORD edging the vote. Tim Vaughan’s charge offered more when runner-up at Sandown and that form could be a touch stronger. Holly, Saligo Bay and Mr Mackay are sure to have their supporters as well.

totewin: Classic Lord toteeachway: Mr Freedom

RACE 6

PUDDLESINTHEPARK wasn’t disgraced when third behind a subsequent winner at Southwell last month. A 2lb drop in the handicap can only help Evan Williams’ gelding and this looks a suitable opportunity for him to open his account over fences. Kap Chidley is a potential fly in the ointment if a wind procedure unlocks some potential, with his runner-up effort at Uttoxeter in October reading well. Born At Midnight may fare best of the remainder.

totewin: Puddlesinthepark toteeachway: Kap Chidley

Mi Sueno warrants respect judged on his wide-margin romp at Fakenham, although he may not have beaten much in selling handicap company. An 8lb rise in the ratings could prove his undoing, and preference is for BIRDMAN BOB. Andy Irvine’s inmate appeared to have plenty in the tank here in February, but for making a mistake at the third-last and unseating his rider. Compensation could await, with Criquette completing the shortlist.

totewin: Birdman Bob toteeachway: Mi Sueno

LAST MEETING REVIEW

David’s Well got punters off to a winning start as he come home a 14-length winner in our opener. Well found in the market, Rex Dingle kept things nice and simple on the Chris Gordon trained runner, who looked to be well clear of his rivals.

Activist has been steadily improving this season and finally put it altogether to win with a bit to spare. Jack Tudor opted to sit in second for much of the contest and despite a mistake four out, turned for home going much the best. He was ridden briefly up the run in to make sure he secured the prize but in truth he could be called the winner a long way from home. Macari had taken a keep hold in the early stages and ultimately paid the price at the business end of the race to finish second.

Our third contest was a race for amateur jockeys, which gave us an exciting finish between Everything’sontick and Gerico Ville. A mere neck separated the pair as they crossed the line, with Miss Izzie Marshall benefiting from an untimely unseat from Windance when he was eight lengths clear. Despite being headed up the run in by Gerico Ville and Miss Gina Andrews, Everything’sontick battled back gamely to narrowly take the prize.

A stamina sapping three miles one furlong awaited the seven hopefuls in our next race. Both Dear Ralphy and Can’t Buy Time went off at a quick pace, which ultimately benefited those in behind. Weaver’s Answer had travelled well in behind, relishing the underfoot conditions to come home a ready winner under Alan Johns for Tim Vaughan.

The wide margin victories continued into our penultimate race, with 22 lengths separating first and second. The victor this time was Time To Bite for Chris Honour and Bryan Carver, who made all to give punters another winning favourite.

Our finale saw the sponsors of the race take the win with Molto Bene. Lily Pinchin was excellent on the five-year-old, who despite jumping left on occasions, came home an eased down winner to land the finale for Charlie Longsdon.

Raceday preview from Weatherbys

It is a pleasure to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Handicap Hurdle, in which six go to post in this Class 4 eventstagedover3m1f.

I’m A Starman is the sole course and distance winner set to line up, who ended a long losing run with a determined victory here on his penultimate start in January. Mark Rimmell’s eleven-year-old was well beaten at Ascot last time but will appreciate a return to a softer surface and has stamina in abundance.Ballinskerwasawinner overfenceshereatPlumptonbackin 2022forEvanWilliamsandrevertsto hurdles following a pulled-up effort at Ffos Las over a shorter trip last time. This longer trip is sure to suit and, whilst not a winner over timber in almost three years, has won from amark10lbhigherthanthis.

Artistic Endeavour and Letthedustsettle will share top weight inthecontest, but theformer will be searching for his first victory. Tim Vaughan’s six-year-old has proved incredibly consistent in five starts so far this term though, finishingoutsideofthetopthreejust once, and is threatening to shed his maidentagfromthissortofmark.

A staying-on third at Sandown last time offered plenty of encouragement, and there is plenty of scope for improvement up in trip here. Tom Lacey’s Letthedustsettle recorded a brace of quickfire successes at Catterick but couldn’t land the hattrick at Newcastle last time, still running well in second behind a progressive rival. He takes abighikeupintripfroma1lbhigher mark.

Hasty Parisian is now winless in 17 starts but will benefit from a continually sliding mark, now 8lbs below that last winning mark. The six-year-old has come home a distant third and second in his last two starts over course and distance but looks well worth another go at this trip, for all that he is probably vulnerable to a more unexposed type. Overabottleofred showed more than he had previously when fourth in a maiden hurdle here last time over the intermediate trip, outpaced around the home turn but keeping on well to be beaten just 11 lengths. Tom Gretton’s five-yearold steps up in trip for this handicap debut and should prove better than anopeningmarkof97intime.
