WELCOME

Welcome to our January Jumps Raceday.

Christmas has been and gone, New Year’s celebrations seem like a distant memory with it being cold, wet and miserable outside – so what is better than a midweek fixture at Plumpton to blow away the post festive season blues? Nothing we say! And so thank you for joining us at what might be known as a “proper national hunt fixture”. The weather aside, we have one of everyone’s favourite races today and that is the Veteran’s Race for horses aged 10 years or more, which is worth a nice £23k total and so over £12k to the winner. Our field of 9 have had 263 runs and won over £538k between them as well as having 5 previous Plumpton winners in the field and so it should be quite a contest.

Speaking of which, we certainly had a Sussex National to remember, with the Joe Tizzard trained Atakan just prevailing by a neck from the Chris Gordon-trained Blame The Game after over 3 mile and 4 ½ furlongs of pulsating action. Although it was Joe’s first winner of the race in his own right, it carried on the Family tradition as his father Colin is the winning most trainer of the race having previously won it 3 times before passing over the reins. We had a superb atmosphere with a crowd of over 3,200 and it was great to see in the Racing Post this week that attendances over the festive period were strong across the board and well ahead of last year.

It’s a busy time of year now with fixtures coming thick and fast – do remember to book your Paddock Restaurant spaces as soon as possible as space is running out quickly for many racedays.

Have a great day, lets enjoy some proper national hunt racing and we look forward to seeing you again on the 30th January.

Best Wishes, Dan

Horse Care at Plumpton

At every race meeting at Plumpton there are three specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action.

During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Paramedic team responsible for human casualties.

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

Use of Screens

It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground. This does not reflect on the severity of any injury, but allows the vet some privacy, and the patient a calm environment in which to make a recovery.

Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse. All equine care at Plumpton is provided by: Sussex Equine Hospital Billingshurst Rd, Ashington, West Sussex RH20 3BB

Unauthorised Bookmaking

It is a condition of entry to this racecourse that only individuals in possession of a valid betting badge and occupying an authorised pitch are entitled to lay bets on the course of their business. Any individual contravening these rules will be evicted. On-Course Bookmakers at Plumpton – Late

BHA Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a suffi cient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principle purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confi rmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefi xed by the letter h.

BETTING INFORMATION

A bet can make an already exciting race far more thrilling. Backing your selection with cash and watching your chosen horse win is a great feeling.

1. Pick your winner!

Many people select a horse based on its name or jockey colours or go to the parade ring and view the horses. Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper. Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. Where to place your bet

– In the betting ring, in front of the Grandstands, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

– With the Tote at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse.

– At the William Hill betting shop, which is identical to a high street betting shop.

3. Place your bet

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place. Then cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet:

– Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after the race is off

– Keep your bet receipt safe. You will need this to collect your winnings

– Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’. Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards enquiry’.

If you have any queries about your bet, please speak to the bookmaker or the Betting Ring Manager.

PLACE TERMS

All Racecourses enforce standard each way terms, in line with Paragraph 2.7.11 of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – Special Conditions E. These terms state that where accepting each-way bets, bookmakers will ensure the terms shall be or shall be better, i.e. more favourable to the customer, than:

(a) for races with fewer than 3 runners – all to win; (b) for races with 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2; (c) for races with 5-7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2; (d) for races with 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3; (e) for handicap races with 12-15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3; (f) for handicap races with 16-21 runners (inclusive) 1/5 odds on place 1-2-3-4; and (g) for handicap races with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds on place 1-2-3-4,and shall comply with clause 2.7.2 regarding the prominent display of terms.

WHAT IS RULE 4?

Rule 4 is a betting industry-standard deduction that is made on a winning horse bet when there is a non-runner in a race, and you have taken a fi xed price.

If there is a non runner in the race, anyone who backs a non-runner will get their stakes refunded. The Rule 4 exists to make a deduction from your bet to take into account the impact on the betting market of the non runner.

The amount of the deduction varies depending on the price of the non-runner. The Rule 4 deduction is not applied to the stake, only to your winnings.

Seamus Mullins boasts a 32% strike-rate with his chasers at Plumpton in the last five seasons, yielding a level stakes profit of £37.62, and today he saddles En Coeur (1.55) and I See You Well (3.00).

GAELIC PARK sets the standard for his two rivals to aim at and is likely to be hard to beat given the improvement he’s shown since returning from a break in October. It’s also notable that he won a point-to-point over three miles prior to joining Charlie Longsdon, so shouldn’t have too many issues with this distance. Goodwin Racing showed ability in a couple of bumpers and heads the list of dangers from Flemen’s Tipple.

WIN: GAELIC PARK; DANGER: Goodwin Racing

Most of these have questions to answer and, while En Coeur, who won this corresponding race last year, and Dame du Soir, who won a mares handicap at Cheltenham last month, both make plenty of appeal, it might be worth chancing a small investment on SHAW’S CROSS. The selection runs off a mark 21lb below his last winning hurdles rating and, given that he’s effective at this circuit, he rates a solid value pick.

WIN: SHAW’S CROSS; DANGER: En Coeur

ASTROMACHIA did very little wrong in defeat in three outings over timber towards the back end of last year and is an appealing candidate to land this prize. His yard enjoyed a winner earlier this month and this gelding looks an ideal type to keep the ball rolling. Poncho has ability and can make it tough for the selection, while his stablemate Tenfold also has scope and is another who is dangerous to underestimate.

WIN: ASTROMACHIA; DANGER: Poncho

I SEE YOU WELL finished his race off well when fourth in the Sussex National here at the start of the month and the 10-year-old, who scored the time before at Sandown, has been found a suitable opportunity to get his head back in front. Trixster may benefit from going back left-handed following his recent second at Taunton just before Christmas. The drop back in trip might aid the cause of Innisfree Lad.

WIN: I SEE YOU WELL; DANGER: Trixster

SPIKE JONES returned to winning form at Fontwell on Boxing Day with the hood taken off after a slightly below-par effort at Catterick. A 3lb rise is unlikely to stop the six-year-old from progressing again, especially with a stiff test of stamina at this track. Gerico Ville is open to improvement stepping up in trip following his third at Fakenham on New Year’s Day, while others for the shortlist include Midnight Mary and Shot Boii.

WIN: SPIKE JONES; DANGER: Gerico Ville

TOMMY DILLION went up 12lb for a facile success at Lingfield last month when clearly benefiting from heavy ground and, with similar conditions underfoot on this occasion, it would be no surprise if Richard Rowe’s gelding proved capable of backing that performance up. Executive Pool was third in the aforementioned contest and is entitled to build on that effort, while Celtic Fortune showed promise in a bumper at Worcester last May and is also of interest.

WIN: TOMMY DILLION; DANGER: Executive Pool

The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race.

The feature race on today’s six-race card is the Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide Veterans’ Handicap Chase, a race which was won 12 months ago by Innisfree Lad, who is back to defend his crown.

A conditional jockeys’ race in 2022, David Dennis’ runner carried top-weight to success under Jack Andrews, from a mark of 127. He went on to finish third in the Eider Chase at Newcastle, but having been out of form since, has dropped back down to the exact same rating. Toby Wynne takes off a valuable 5lbs, although the ground would have to be a concern, with it likely riding a lot more testing than it was a year ago.

There are another trio of course-and-distance winners in the lineup, starting with the Seamus Mullins-trained I See You Well, who is another who would, ideally, prefer a sounder surface. A winner on good ground at Sandown on his penultimate start, he finished fourth in the Sussex National at this track last time and his overall course form reads 11F41116134. Six of his 10 career wins have been gained here at Plumpton.

Special Acceptance, who has been off the track for 667 days, and Putdecashonthedash are the other pair of course-and-distance winners, with the latter having won a competitive 0-115 contest here last January. That is the only time that he has raced at Plumpton previously and having failed to complete in his two starts this season, is now just 2lbs higher As for Special Acceptance, he won a similar 0-115 in December 2020 – perhaps, crucially, on soft ground – and returned to finish runner-up in the 2021 Sussex National, when he was beaten by an in-form rival in Seaston Spirit, who was completing a hat-trick. Well-beaten when last seen in March 2021, he has dropped to his last winning mark and if you go right back through his form, you will see that Paul Webber’s 10-year-old finished behind Epatante and Brewin’upastorm on his first two starts over hurdles. He remains lightly-raced for his age and would have to be taken very seriously on old form.

Potters Legend is a teenager now and will be having his third start for trainer Charlie Longsdon, who has enjoyed a fine season to date. He has shaped well in a couple of races so far this season and wasn’t too far behind Wishing And Hoping (50-1 winner at Sandown recently) at Aintree on his reappearance. Runner-up at Catterick last time, he is versatile in terms of ground and remains competitive, despite his age.

Admiral Barratry, Alminar and Mister Murchan all arrive here on the back of being pulled-up last time. The latter, who handles heavy ground, is a course winner and is well-weighted with I See You Well from their meeting in December 2021, whilst Alminar was successful at Ffos Las back in November. Admiral Barratry represents the Lucy Wadham stable and the Newmarket-based trainer saddled a double at Huntingdon on Friday.

Finally, Trixster completes the line-up for Tim Vaughan and Charlie Price. The son of Beneficial remains lightly-raced as a chaser and has been in quite consistent form this term. Despite a lot of that recent form coming on good ground, he won a novice hurdle at Chepstow on heavy ground, way back in December 2018.

TOMMY DILLION was much improved when scoring readily at Lingfield last time and he’s taken to overcome a hefty rise at the possible expense of Executive Pool, who was well backed and shaped better than the result in the same race. Tara Iti is also worthy of consideration.
