“Ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch.”
These were the words spoken by Queen Anne that have shaped the history of Ascot Racecourse. It was whilst riding out from Windsor Castle in 1711 that she first saw the land that had such potential for horse racing. Inspired by what she had discovered, Ascot’s inaugural event – Her Majesty’s Plate – was held here upon her request that very same year. For more than 300 years since, the patronage of thirteen monarchs has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses.
The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen and Ascot’s first event was held on Saturday 11th August 1711, with its first four-day meeting taking place in 1768. A permanent building was erected to hold just over 1,600 people in 1793 and the now-renowned Gold Cup was introduced fourteen years later. It was at the beginning of the nineteenth century where the origins of today’s Royal Meeting lie.
It was around the same time that the roots of today’s traditional Royal Enclosure Dress Code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this evolved into the wearing of morning suits and equally formal attire for ladies, including of course hats – and today, the issuing of the Lookbook maintains Royal Ascot’s unique event experience while encouraging racegoers to dress in an outfit authentic to their own personal style.
Ascot’s first major redevelopment came to fruition in 1954 with the relocation of the Straight Mile north to allow more space behind the stands This was quickly followed by the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand in 1961 and the Members’ Stand in 1964.
Ascot’s much-loved tradition of singing around the Bandstand began in the 1970s under the stewardship of Lady Beaumont, wife of then Clerk of the Course, Captain Sir Nicholas Beaumont.
2002 saw plenty of change to the established pattern of Royal Ascot as it expanded to five days to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The Cork & Orrery Stakes became The Golden Jubilee Stakes in celebration and would then go on to be renamed in line with subsequent Jubilees in 2012 and 2022.
Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for redevelopment, which meant the Royal Meeting was staged at York in 2005 The new Ascot Grandstand was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on time and to its £220 million budget, on 20th June 2006
In 2009, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Yeats won an unprecedented fourth Gold Cup, beating the record set by Sagaro in the 1970s. A statue commemorating the great stayer’s remarkable achievement now stands in the Parade Ring.
Ascot celebrated its Tercentenary in 2011 while the following year, the Royal Meeting played its part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. On the track, the incomparable Frankel won The Queen Anne Stakes in sensational style, and Australian legend Black Caviar just clung on in a dramatic Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
In 2013, Estimate won The Gold Cup in the famous royal colours for Queen Elizabeth II to rapturous applause, having won The Queen’s Vase the previous year Further success for Queen Elizabeth II came in 2016 with Dartmouth winning the Hardwick Stakes.
The Village Enclosure opened in 2017; the first new enclosure for 100 years offers racegoers a unique perspective from the centre of the track.
2021 saw Queen Elizabeth II attend Royal Ascot for the final time before her death in 2022 - The Platinum Jubilee Stakes was permanently renamed as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in her memory.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended their first Royal Ascot as King and Queen in 2023, with His Majesty The King the 13th monarch to oversee the running of Ascot Racecourse It was a memorable one for Their Majesties as Desert Hero won the King George V Stakes, their first winner at the Royal Meeting as owners.
In 2024, The King’s Stand Stakes was run as The King Charles III Stakes for the first time, after being permanently renamed with the kind permission of His Majesty
This year, prize money at the Royal Meeting is once again in excess of £10 million. With eight Group 1 races and a total of 22 Pattern or Listed level events throughout the five days, Royal Ascot continues to deliver quality fields and world-class contenders from all over the world.

Notably, he enjoyed major success on big stages, including a win at Royal Ascot with Portage, and made his mark at the Dubai Racing Carnival many times, winning the Dubai Gold Cup with Certerach. Michael is also one of the few Irish trainers to have saddled over 1,200 winners.
The Queen Alexandra Stakes
Presentation by Miss Hayley Turner OBE
Hayley Turner is a retired English Flat racing jockey who made significant strides for women in the sport. Beginning her career in 2000, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming joint Champion Apprentice in 2005. Turner made history in 2008 by becoming the first British woman to ride 100 winners in a calendar year and secured her first Group 1 victory in 2011 aboard Dream Ahead in the July Cup. She has ridden four winners here at Royal Ascot and achieved her 1,000th win in July 2024 before retiring in April 2025 after announcing she was expecting her first child.
2.30pm The Chesham Stakes (Listed)
Named after the third Baron Chesham, who was the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901. First run in 1919, the Chesham Stakes replaced the first leg of the Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two-year-olds. Now a Listed contest, the race takes place over the longer distance of seven furlongs and is restricted to youngsters whose sire has won over ten furlongs or further. It was won in 2019 by the champion two-year-old that year, Pinatubo, in a track record time.
Named after the fifth Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. The Group 2 contest continues to attract the best older middle-distance horses and is often an informative guide to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in July. It is run with no Group 1 or 2 winners’ penalties as a quasi-Group 1 race with top level horses regularly competing.
3.40pm
First run in 1868, this six-furlong contest was originally named after Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds, and known as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was given a new name – the Golden Jubilee Stakes - and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. It then assumed the mantle of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and the Platinum Jubilee Stakes for subsequent celebrations. In 2023 it was permanently renamed in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, as the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. Now worth £1 million in prize money, it is routinely won by some of the best sprinters in the world.
The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the fourth Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this specialist seven-furlong contest is framed for three-year-olds who have often competed at the top level, including in the Guineas.
5.00pm
The inaugural running of the Wokingham Stakes took place in 1813, making this race the oldest handicap at Royal Ascot. This famous sprint is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot Racecourse, and the first dual winner was appropriately also named Wokingham (1881 and 1882). Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.
5.35pm
The penultimate contest at Royal Ascot was among the six prizes added to the race programme in 2020. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile. Queen Elizabeth II graciously consented to the race title which is run over a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running proved a high-class contest with the winner, Highland Chief, subsequently being placed at Group 2 level.
6.10pm
Run over the marathon trip of two-and-three-quarter miles, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is not only the longest race of the meeting, but also the longest contest run under Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as the Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with Brown Jack, arguably Royal Ascot’s greatest equine legend, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. The Queen Alexandra Stakes always closes the meeting and, perhaps because of its extreme distance in a time when so much emphasis is on speed, it has become a national institution and is affectionately supported by regulars.
Racing Welfare’s Racing Staff Week campaign, which launches today and runs until Friday 27th June, celebrates the passion, skill and dedication of staff in all roles across the horse racing industry.
There are more than 20,000 people directly employed by the horse racing industry, in roles such as stud and stable staff; breeders; trainers; administrators and, of course, racecourse staff - many of whom you will have seen across Royal Ascot this week. In fact, it takes more than 3,000 members of staff to deliver the Royal Meeting - and that does not include all the horsemen and women who prepare and travel their horses to Berkshire to take part in the world-class racing on show across the week.
Racing Welfare is the sport’s primary human welfare charity, offering holistic wellbeing support services to all of racing’s people.
The charity spearheads the Racing Staff Week campaign to shine a light on all the amazing people working hard, and often behind the scenes, to keep the racing show on the road.
Generously supported by Betfair and now in its ninth year, Racing Staff Week will include a range of events and activities to bring racing’s community together including rounders matches, barbecues and an inclusive photography competition. Racing Welfare staff will also be at several racecourses across the country raising awareness of the charity’s wellbeing support services and promoting upcoming community activity
To find out more about Racing Welfare and how you can support the charity’s future work visit racingwelfare.co.uk or search ‘Racing Welfare’ on social media.
Each summer, the grounds of Ascot Racecourse transform into a stage for one of Britain’s most cherished traditions - the Royal Procession. More than a ceremonial pageant, it is a living symbol of monarchy, heritage, and the unbreakable bond between the Royal Family and the sport of kings. This regal display, virtually unchanged since its inception in 1825, continues to enthral racegoers and reinforce the timeless grandeur of Royal Ascot.
The roots of this spectacular tradition stretch back to 1711 when Queen Anne founded Ascot as a venue for “horses fit for kings.” Yet it wasn’t until the reign of George IV that the Royal Procession as we know it today came to be. It was during his reign, in 1825, that the first Royal Procession took place - a moment choreographed with theatrical finesse by William Wellesley-Pole. On 31st May 1825, the King, accompanied by the Duke of Wellington, led four other coaches with members of the royal party from Windsor Castle to Ascot - a tradition that has endured two centuries.
The Royal Procession is more than ceremonial - it’s deeply personal for the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II’s affinity for Royal Ascot was legendary. Andrew Lloyd Webber reinforces this sentiment: “Everybody knew that that was her real passion - racing.”
John Warren, the late Queen’s long-time bloodstock and racing adviser, shares how “the Queen was unbelievably knowledgeable,” often referencing horse breeding and reading the Racing Post cover to cover. Her passion and expertise bore fruit in 2013 when her filly, Estimate, won the Gold Cup, making her the first reigning monarch to do so as an owner. Warren recalls, “When she passed the post, it brought the house down… The Queen was really, really excited It was a day to remember.”
Following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, her son King Charles III and Queen Camilla have carried forward this storied legacy. In 2023, the new monarch made his debut in the Royal Procession, greeted by an ecstatic crowd. “The crowd went completely crazy,” says Madeleine Lloyd Webber of the moment. That same year, Desert Hero, a horse bred by the late Queen, delivered an emotional victory under the royal colours. “To actually have a winner in the King’s first year was quite remarkable,” said Warren, adding, “The King welled up, tears in his eyes, and the Queen burst into tears.”
William Haggas underscored the poignancy of the win: “To do it at Royal Ascot with a homebred of the late Queen’s - it doesn’t get better than that.”
From the flags waved by spectators to the thunderous cheers that greet each arrival, the Royal Procession continues to captivate. “Every box, every stand, every blade of grass is full of people watching the procession,” says Warren. The sense of pageantry is unmistakable - “It’s such an extraordinary sight,” Lloyd Webber remarks.
In recent years, the Royal Procession has had occasions where it’s looked different to the norm. Perhaps the most famous example was 20 years ago, when Royal Ascot was held at York due to the redevelopment of the Grandstand – the first time the Procession had ventured outside Berkshire. A special, poignant moment, described by the Duke of Devonshire, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot, as “one of the most significant racing events in living memory, something very special and a moment of history.”
Then there was the only time the Royal Procession was held outside Royal Ascot week. In the year 2000, six days before the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s 100th birthday, a special Procession was arranged for July, on the day of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – the race that had been named in her honour since it was first run in 1951, created to establish an important middle-distance race recognised internationally. The contest was won in some style by the mercurial Montjeu, a majestic performance to match an occasion that broke from all tradition, yet heralded that familiar, unmatched sense of celebration.
As Ascot marks the 200th anniversary of the Royal Procession this year, its resonance feels stronger than ever. It remains an iconic symbol of British tradition - a bridge between royalty and the public, sport and spectacle, past and present.
Whichever enclosure it’s watched from, racegoers are not just witnessing an event; they are part of living history. What began in 1825 as a carefully choreographed spectacle has become a cherished tradition, while retaining its original purpose.
The Royal Procession at Ascot is not just a journey down the Ascot turf, but a timeless passage through heritage, memory, and pride - a pageant of continuity in an ever-changing world.
This year at the Royal Meeting, visitors to the Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to see one of the landaus from the Royal Procession on the ground floor of the Grandstand. There will also be footage from last year’s Procession, captured from on-board the lead carriage, giving visitors a first-person perspective on what it’s like to ride in the Procession.

Building on the success of our annual Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition, this year we appointed Colours Immortalis consultancy to facilitate a Fashion Design Enrichment Programme across 10 local schools/ colleges for students aged 15yrs+ studying textiles, fashion and/or photography.
The concept is for students to design an outfit to be worn in the Queen Anne Enclosure at Royal Ascot. We were delighted that LK Bennett, Official Sponsor of Royal Ascot, were on board to manufacture the winning entry, which was designed by Sofia Linares, a 15-year-old student from The Abbey School, Reading. Her fabulous design can be seen to the right.
Workshops were held to help build confidence, equip students with transferable skills and gain insight into the real-world design process whilst enhancing their portfolios. This year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our Millinery Collective, students were also asked to incorporate one of the hats, as featured at London Fashion Week, into their design. Sofia chose the hat made by ELIURPI.
As part of the prize, Sofia visited LK Bennett’s HQ in London to choose fabrics and learn more about the design process. LK Bennett have again generously offered Sofia work experience in the Autumn –a great stepping stone for this student. Sofia is attending Royal Ascot today with her family to showcase her bespoke outfit.

The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes has an illustrious roll of honour, the likes of Black Caviar and Blue Point immediately spring to mind.
Lazzat, a new purchase for Wathnan Racing who must have been purchased for a pretty penny, proved prolific for trainer Jerome Reynier, winning seven of his ten starts. He bolted up in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Ghees and had the re-opposing Flora Of Bermuda (also representing Wathnan Racing) by four lengths behind him that day. He also got the better of Greenlands winner James’s Delight in France and sets the standard here on European form. Christopher Head’s Topgear is another French raider in the field, but all of his form has been on softer ground.
Storm Boy brings the Australian form to the party. A multiple Group winner for Gai Waterhouse, the Justify colt finished third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper and fourth in the Group 1 Golden Rose. He ran below-par at the Curragh recently but could put his best foot forward here. The other international runner is the Japanese contender Satono Reve. The Japanese have never had a winner at Royal Ascot but their runners are held in high regard around the globe and the six-year-old is respected.
Kevin Ryan’s Inisherin looks the best chance of success for the home team, 4lb clear of the next highest-rated British-trained horse. He travelled powerfully through proceedings when a dominant winner of the Commonwealth Cup at the meeting over course and distance last year and returns to the scene for the first time since. Iberian is the one at a massive price that could outrun his odds but as usual, this is very tricky contest.

Racegoers in the Royal Enclosure and Queen Anne Enclosure are invited to join in with the unmissable singing around the bandstand after racing from 6.20pm.
It was the late Lady Jinny Beaumont, wife of Sir Nicky Beaumont, Clerk of the Course from 1969 to 1994, who first introduced this communal sing-along that has become synonymous with Royal Ascot.
She was famed for conducting the band and the event grew in popularity to such an extent that a bandstand was erected to recognise this prized Ascot tradition.
Union Jack flags are provided on a first come first served basis, so come with a good voice and be prepared to sing along to classics such as Land of Hope and Glory, My Way and We’ll Meet Again.
Ascot Racecourse would like to thank The Band of The Household Cavalry who will be playing throughout Royal Ascot 2025 and John Park who will be leading the singing.

Irish 2,000 Guineas fifth Comanche Brave should prove suited by the return to 7f and is second choice ahead of Greenham third Saracen, like the selection a lightly-raced sort who should have more to come. William Haggas took this 12 months ago and can repeat the feat with MORE THUNDER who impressed when bagging a pair of Newmarket handicaps for his new yard in the spring and promises to do a fair bit better here over this stiffer 6f Andrew Balding’s Purosangue looks primed for a bold showing and could emerge as the main danger, although a good case can also be made for Aramram, Woodhay Wonder, Golden Mind and Jarraaf in a typically ultra-competitive Wokingham.

The fields for all races on the Flat have to be declared 48 hours before each raceday, and Royal Ascot is no exception.
This year, reserves will be declared at the 48-hour stage for certain Royal Ascot handicaps. The purpose of this is to ensure that owners have the opportunity to run their horses if spaces in the race come about for any reason, before the 24-hour stage.
Up to three reserves can replace non-runners any time up to 1.00pm the day before the race. The reason why reserves cannot come in later is that race programmes have to be finalised for the national media and bookmakers have to prepare markets in the full knowledge of the fields at this stage.
Each reserve horse is given a number and a draw at the 48-hour stage. In the event of a non-runner being declared before the 1.00pm deadline the day before the race, the reserve retains its original number and draw. The stall number of the withdrawn horse is removed, with the positions concertinaing. This is why racegoers might see, for example, the stall numbers going up to 33 although there are only 30 berths and 30 runners.
Today’s races with a reserve running in are The Wokingham Stakes & The Golden Gates StakesHOLKHAM BAY - Wokingham Stakes & BRINDAVAN - Golden Gates Stakes
Ascot Racecourse is giving a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the best turned out horse, and a prize of £300 to the lad or girl responsible for the winning horse.

Glen To Glen has switched to Joseph O’Brien since his good second in a warm Leopardstown handicap in March and is a potentially dangerous opponent. French raider Best Secret and London Gold Cup 3-4 Quai de Bethune and Ernst Blofeld also make the shortlist.

The safety and wellbeing of horses and jockeys is paramount at Royal Ascot and in recent years several major changes have been made to improve welfare standards.
Introduced for the first time at Royal Ascot 2022, every horse running throughout the week will undergo an enhanced pre-race examination carried out on arrival at the stables. The process involves:
• A cardiac assessment
• A trot up over 25 metres in a straight line
• An examination of the musculoskeletal system
These examinations are designed to support the work of the whole sport to reduce avoidable risk, adding an extra layer of protection so we know horses are lining up in the best possible health post-travel.
Ascot has invested significant amounts to improve equine welfare in recent years.
During the 2004-2006 redevelopment a safer racetrack was created by cambering the home and old paddock bends and removing the road crossings over the track.
In 2016, further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area. This benefits from extra space, maximum shade and is also equipped with equine misting fans to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Five specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every day at Royal Ascot alongside three equine ambulances which are dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend an incident generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for jockeys.

A smart stayer on the Flat in France for Andre Fabre (dual Group 2 winner), SOBER made the perfect start for his new yard when successful over hurdles at Killarney 6 weeks ago. He makes plenty of appeal returned to this sphere for a stable that has won this race 4 times Samui was an encouraging third in a handicap over shorter here earlier in the week and is feared. Winners of the following races will earn automatic berths, travel and paid entry fees into the equivalent races at the 2025 Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Del Mar:
• The Queen Anne Stakes
• The King Charles III Stakes
• The Prince of Wales’s Stakes
• The Norfolk Stakes
All four races will be televised live and streamed in the U.S. as part of NBC Sports Group’s live coverage of Royal Ascot.
The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series presented by America’s Best Racing consists of the best races from around the world and awards each winner an automatic and free entry into the Breeders’ Cup World Championships
It’s simple, they win and they’re in.
In recent history, Queen Anne Stakes winners Barathea and Goldikova have gone on to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile while Prince of Wales’s Stakes winners Fantastic Light and Highland Reel went on to be successful in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes, for two-year-olds over five furlongs, will receive a free berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint while the King Charles III Stakes victor gains an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs
Last year Shareholder won the Norfolk Stakes on his second start but was unable to follow up that success in Del Mar – in fact, the horse that finished third in the Norfolk Stakes, Arizona Blaze, was second behind Magnum Force in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, with Whistlejacket and Aesterius also running well in both races
