A warm welcome to the July Course for the first day of the Debenhams July Festival, our Ladies Day, where world class racing meets elegant fashion.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kingdom of Bahrain, the European Breeders Fund, Edmondson Hall Solicitors and the Federation of Bloodstock Agents for their sponsorship of today’s card. We are also extremely grateful to our betting partner bet365 for their generous support across all three days of the July Festival.
Already the longest standing sponsor at Newmarket’s premier summer meeting, the Kingdom of Bahrain have supported the Group Three Bahrain Trophy since its inception in 1991 This year once again sees their support extend to the Group Two Princess of Wales’s Stakes and the Group Two July Stakes
One of the world’s emerging racing jurisdictions, it was announced earlier this week that the upcoming 2025-26 season has been further strengthened with a major boost to The King’s Cup, which has doubled in value to $400,000 The King’s Cup and its accompanying two-day festival provide the climax to the Kingdom’s international racing season and the substantial prize money increase follows the upgrading of the race to Group Three status.
The popular and competitive Bahrain Turf Series returns with twelve races, worth a total of $1 million, and gets underway on 19th December, concluding with The King’s Cup Festival in March.
We are also grateful to our headline partner, Debenhams, who are supporting us across all three days of the July Festival Head down to their Debenhams Day Spa, based trackside in the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, where you can expect interactive beauty bars, hair and make-up touch up zones and some picture-perfect moments. Once you’ve had your mini makeover, keep an eye out for our on-the-spot prizes, awarded for Best Turned Out guests.
We encourage racegoers to join us after racing to enjoy a set full of feel-good tunes from DJ Chris Stark, who will be taking to the stage for 75 minutes Please look at the racecourse map further in this racecard for locations of all activities.
Looking ahead, we have another fantastic day of racing tomorrow, where the mares and fillies will take centre stage in the Group One Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes Tickets for tomorrow will be available on the gate for all those interested.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility.
I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
RACE ONE
It is difficult to look past FURTHUR, who showed marked improvement from his effort in the Chester Vase to finish an excellent second in the Queen's Vase Dropping back a furlong in trip should not inconvenience the son of Waldgeist and he can uphold form with Scandinavia (fifth), who didn't have the best of runs at Royal Ascot before rallying late in the piece. Both he and Hallelujah U, who was less than a length behind in sixth, have the potential to become St Leger types, while Nightime Dancer will find this considerably easier than the Derby, in which he finished eighth
Selection: FURTHUR
RACE TWO
Danger; Hallelujah U
SavedforthissincelandingtheWoodcoteintakingfashionfromsubsequentWindsorCastlewinnerHavanaHurricane,MAXIMIZED looks well up to the rise in grade and he can land a first July Stakes for the in-form Charlie Appleby. The all-conquering Ballydoyle team have been dominant in two-year-old races on both sides of the Irish Sea this season and Brussels deserves the utmost respect, despite his inexperience, having scored comfortably on debut at the Curragh. Do Or Do Not's second in the Coventry is arguably the strongest form on offer, but Ed Walker's colt remains a maiden and may need a tad more to trouble the principals
Selection: MAXIMIZED
RACE THREE
Danger; Brussels
A tentative vote goes to TAWASOL, who arrives here on a hat-trick after scoring impressively on his handicap debut at Doncaster in May. An 11lb rise looks manageable and the son of Havana Grey is narrowly preferred to the progressive Double Rush, who seemed to be caught on the wrong side of the track at York, when just under three lengths behind the winner Hucklesbrook, with whom he is 8lb better off A taking winner on the Rowley Mile last time out, Invictus Gold is expected to be thereabouts, as are Windsor scorer Arabian Sun and the consistent Prince Of India
Selection: TAWASOL
RACE FOUR
Danger; Havana Grey
GHOSTWRITER looks the one to beat now returning to the scene of his emphatic maiden success in August 2023. Clive Cox's colt has been a regular in top-level events since and has yet to run a bad race. There was much to like about his first attempt over 1m4f in the Hardwicke and he is fancied to confirm that form with Palladium, who produced a career-best performance at Royal Ascot and it's a positive that Ryan Moore keeps the partnership intact Wimbledon Hawkeye is an interesting player receiving the weight-for-age allowance.
Selection: GHOSTWRITER
RACE FIVE
Danger; Palladium
George Boughey and Ryan Moore teamed up with an impressive two-year-old winner at Yarmouth last week and NIGHT SHINING could strike for the same partnership here. Her full-sister Dark Liberty won a 7f Listed event in Germany as a juvenile and this 475,000gns purchase is expected to be well above average. Enamorus and Princess Billyboy are also of interest first time out, but the biggest challenge could come from Country Artiste, who left her debut performance well behind when a length second over this trip at Newbury.
Selection: NIGHT SHINING
RACE SIX
Danger; Country Artiste
OPERA BALLO was a shade disappointing in the Craven, but he bounced back to form in no uncertain terms when landing the Heron Stakes at Sandown. The progressive Ghaiyyath colt could have plenty more in the locker and is taken to provide Charlie Appleby with a first win in the contest since Al Suhail in 2020 King Of Cities wasn't beaten far into ninth in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and must be respected in these calmer waters, while Arabian Story takes a step up in class having landed the Britannia last month.
Selection: OPERA BALLO
RACE SEVEN
Danger; King Of Cities
Great Acclaim went agonisingly close over 7f here a fortnight ago and he merits the utmost respect back at a mile, as does Where's Freddy, who came from well off the pace to score over C&D. That said, a chance can be taken on PAROLE D'ORO A shade unfortunate not to have finished closer than eighth in the Britannia last time out, Michael Bell's colt competes from an unchanged mark and ought to go close. Boyfriend was beaten a head by subsequent Royal Hunt Cup winner My Cloud at Newbury before going on to score at Nottingham and is another to consider.
Selection: PAROLE D'ORO
Danger; Great Acclaim

2. JOCKEYS BOOTS
They are mostly synthetic and can weigh as little as 300 grams
3. RACING SADDLE

4. JOCKEYS WHIP

5. SILKS
The silks that a jockey wears belong to the racehorse owner rather than the jockey. Each set is unique, such is the demand for certain designs that some colours can sell for thousands, or even tens of thousands of pounds
6. BREATHING
The horse’s lungs breath in and out 140 times per minute delivering 150 litres of air per second. At 10,000 litres per race, that is what a human breaths in a day
7. HEART CAPACITY
Up to 240 beats per minute moving 60 pints of blood during a race. A racehorse’s heart weighs the equivalent of 4 bags of sugar (around 4 kgs)
8. STRIDE LENGTH
An average racehorses’ stride length is 20-21ft
9. STRIDE FREQUENCY
Between 130 and 140 strides per minute
10. AVERAGE SPEED
37.5 mph

A horse uses 35,000 calories per day, whereas a human adult male is advised to eat 2,500
KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN JULY STAKES
The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes is the oldest two-year-old race run anywhere in Britain with a history stretching way back to 1786, when it was won by Bullfinch.
Initially open to both sexes, it was restricted to colts and geldings in 1977 Formerly a Group Three, the six-furlong contest was upgraded to Group Two status in 2003.
In its early years, the winners included horses that went on to excel over longer distances later in their career including future Derby winners Gustavus (1820), Orlando (1843), The Flying Dutchman (1848), Donovan (1888), Cicero (1904) and Nimbus (1948) In the time when it was open to fillies, the most significant winner was Sceptre (1901), the only horse to win four of the five English Classics (1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger).
Since World War II, the July Stakes has generally gone to horses who have gone on to prove themselves as specialist sprinters. A notable winner was Green Desert (1985), who went on to Group One success the following year in the July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup before a long and successful career at stud.
The best winner of recent years is Advertise (2018), who went on to win three times at Group One level.
George Fordham and Sir Gordon Richards are the most successful jockeys of all time with six wins each while Frankie Dettori has been successful five times. Frank Butters is the winningmost trainer with seven victories while among the current generation Richard Hannon leads the way with four successes and Aidan O’Brien has won it three times, including with Whistlejacket last year

This is wide open but the Crisfords’ TAWASOL created an excellent impression when scooting in on his handicap debut at Doncaster in May and can make light of an 11lb weights hike on his return from a break here. THE PRINCESS OF WALES’S STAKES
(Sponsored by the Kingdom of Bahrain)
First run in 1894, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes is named in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who became the Princess of Wales on her marriage to the future King Edward VII in 1862.
Over the years the race, which is open to three-year-olds and upwards, has been won by some of the very best horses to have graced the historic Newmarket turf Initially staged over a mile, it was increased to its present distance of a mile and a half in 1902
Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown in 1893, was the inaugural winner in 1894 while the 1899 Triple Crown hero, Flying Fox, took in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes in the same year as his 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger victories Rock Sand, the 1903 Triple Crown winner, was another high-class winner in the early years, scoring as a four-year-old in 1904
Lance Chest became the first horse to score back-to-back victories when he triumphed in 1912 and 1913, while another high-class winner was Blandford in 1922 Although he only ran four times in his life, Blandford went on to a highly successful career as a stallion, as did the 1925 victor, Solario
Airborne, the first post-war winner of the Derby in 1946 at 50-1, won the Newmarket contest in the same season, while a young Lester Piggott enjoyed one of his first big race victories when riding Zucchero to success in 1952 The “Long Fellow”, who was just 16 at the time, also enjoyed back-to-back victories on Primera (1959 and 1960) as well as scoring on Apostle (1961), Lord Helpus (1977), Pollerton (1978), Light Cavalry (1981) and Head For Heights (1984)
Due to the quality of its winners, the contest was upgraded to a Group Two affair in 1978
Two very good fillies to have won the Princess of Wales’s Stakes are Lupe (1971), who won the 1970 Oaks, and Height Of Fashion (1982) Owned by The Queen, Height Of Fashion was subsequently sold to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and became one of the most outstanding broodmares of her generation with the likes of Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef among her offspring. Unfuwain himself won the 1988 Princess of Wales’s Stakes.
In 1989, Carroll House was the winner of the Newmarket contest and went on to prove himself one of the outstanding middle-distance horses of his generation by landing the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp later in the season

The indicators pointing to a big run from newcomer NIGHT SHINING are pretty strong, given herpedigree, price tag and entry in the LowtherStakes. The booking ofRyan Moore is another very positive factor and the case for supporting this filly will be further bolstered if she’s popular in the betting. Crimson Rose looks nailed-on to improve for her debut spin on the all-weather and she is feared most ahead of Country Artiste and debutantes Enamorus and Princess Billyboy.

LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROWS RACING
Upgraded to Group One status in 2004, the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes is one of the UK’s most prestigious races of the season for fillies and mares.
Established in 1911, the mile contest is named in honour of the sixth Viscount Falmouth, one of the leading owner-breeders of the 19th Century who was responsible for 16 English Classic victories between 1857 and 1883
Initially for three-year-olds only, the Falmouth Stakes was opened up to older fillies and mares in 1973 Appropriately, the inaugural running in 1911 fell to Alice, owned by the seventh Viscount Falmouth, son of the sixth Viscount, although few would have got rich backing the 1-10 favourite.
During its early history, the Falmouth Stakes was dominated by trainer Alec Taylor, known as “The Wizard of Manton”, who recorded six successes with First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid Of Bath (1924)
Happy Laughter in 1953 became the first filly to win both the 1000 Guineas and the Falmouth Stakes in the same season Waterloo, in 1972, is the only other to have taken the two Newmarket contests
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sonic Lady won the first running of the Falmouth Stakes with Group Two status in 1987, having also scored 12 months earlier. The Nureyev filly was a truly outstanding performer, having also won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Sussex Stakes and Prix du Moulin - all Group One events
Between 1993 and 1995, the combination of owner Lord Carnarvon and trainer Richard Hannon reigned supreme Niche coasted home by an impressive three and a half lengths in 1993, while Lemon Souffle was not hard pressed to record a length and a quarter success a year later The duo notched their third successive win in 1995 with Caramba, but this time the winning margin was just a short head
The German raider Proudwings made history when she was victorious in 2001 by two lengths Trained by Cologne-based Ralf Suerland and ridden by leading Japanese jockey Yutaka Take, Proudwings was the first German-trained winner of a Pattern race in Britain since Star Appeal in the 1975 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park.
The 2004 renewal, the first with Group One status, saw the 1000 Guineas heroine Attraction take on the older generation for the first time Mark Johnston’s charge ran well but went down by two and a half lengths to the other star filly of the season, Soviet Song, losing her unbeaten record in the process.
Soviet Song returned in 2005 to defend her title and did so in style, comfortably defeating Alexander Goldrun by two and a half lengths under regular pilot Johnny Murtagh (who had been on board in 2004), albeit in a slower time than the previous year
The greatest winner ever is Goldikova (2009), a 14-time winner at Group/Grade One level, who created history by winning the Breeders’ Cup Mile in the USA on three occasions (2008, 2009 & 2010).
MOST SUCCESSFUL HORSES:
There have been two dual winners:
Sonic Lady (1986, 1987)
Soviet Song (2004, 2005)
MOST SUCCESSFUL TRAINERS:
Alec Taylor Jr and Sir Michael Stoute are the most successful trainers, with six victories apiece
Taylor’s winners were First Spear (1914), Tomatina (1919), Lady Ava (1920), Blue Lady (1921), Leighon Tor (1922) and Maid of Bath (1924).
Stoute has been successful so far with Royal Heroine (1983), Sonic Lady (1986 & 1987), Lovers Knot (1998), Integral (2014) and Veracious (2019).
James Fanshawe and John Gosden are the most successful current trainers with three wins each. Fanshawe triumphed in three consecutive years with Macadamia (2003) and Soviet Song (2004 & 2005) while Gosden, who now trains in partnership with his son Thady, was on the mark with Ryafan (1997), Elusive Kate (2013) and Nazeef (2020)
MOST SUCESSFUL JOCKEY:
The late Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey in the race of all time with seven winsSylphide (1957), Green Opal (1960), Chrona (1966), Vital Match (1969), Chalon (1982), Niche (1993) and Lemon Souffle (1994).
Ryan Moore is the most successful current jockey with four wins – Integral (2014), Alice Springs (2016), Roly Poly (2017) and Porta Fortuna (2024).
AGE OF WINNERS:
In the 51 runnings since it became an all-aged affair in 1973, three-year-olds have the best record with 34 successes.

IMPORTANT NOTICES
RACEHORSE & JOCKEY WELFARE
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital
