Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
★★★★★ Selected to win the race
★★★★✩ Good chance of being placed.
13. Breeder
14. Trainer
15. Jockey
16. Sponsor 15
★★★✩✩ By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
★★✩✩✩ Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
★✩✩✩✩ Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
The details of Owner, Trainer, Breeder, Sponsor & Colours are highlighted on the card. If you are unsure about reading the card, remember to ask at a tote window for advice.
You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet. If you cannot produce this your bet will not be accepted

Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season, towards the end of April although for wins between 1st March and the end of the season they may continue to contest novice races until the end of the following October This particular two miles and half a furlong novices’ hurdle race is for horses aged fouryears-old and upwards which have not won more than two hurdle races.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly. And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.

With the Warren Greatrex team in such good form it might be worth giving PREMIER another chance to show he’s on a workable mark. Rukaana is only 1lb higher than when second at Market Rasen in May and a runner-up finish on the Flat last month suggests he’s back in form. Gms Prince and unexposed handicap newcomer Getarose also make the shortlist.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £130,175 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 15th September to 31st December 2025.

This is a two miles and seven furlongs handicap steeple chase for novice four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 120. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 60 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 170.

Given his connections, hopes can be high that BELOW THE RADAR will step up on what he showed over hurdles now tackling the larger obstacles. The 7-y-o is taken to make a winning start in this sphere off what could turn out to be a very fair mark. Smugglers Haven won’t go down without a fight judged on the battling qualities she showed at Cheltenham, while Bertie Wooster’s recent C&D close-call entitles him to considerable respect, too. Kap Vert will also be a threat if he takes to fences.

This is a two miles and three furlongs handicap hurdle race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 130. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have won a race, been placed twice or raced at least three times in order for the handicapper to gauge the level of form shown. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 130 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 125.

Devilishy competitive stuff, with several plausible candidates. At the likely prices OOH BETTY could be worth chancing, given that she was a cracking third off this mark in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr during the spring and her reappearance spin at Ascot will have blown away the cobwebs. Anyharminasking is also on a workable mark and is greatly respected, along with High Fibre, while the Paul Nicholls-trained duo, Just A Rose and last year’s winner Him Malaya, also enter calculations.

This is a two miles and two furlongs handicap steeple chase for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 100. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 7lb.

This three mile handicap hurdle race has been designed for three-year-olds and upwards which are rated from 0 to 100. In most National Hunt handicaps, there is a minimum weight of 10st so any horse whose official rating would allocate them less than that still has to shoulder that burden. The horses that fall into this category are said to be racing from ‘out of the handicap’ – usually a distinct disadvantage.

SMARTER
Several make appeal in this 0-100 but HARDY BUCK is unpenalised for his recent Exeter success (due to race off 7lb higher in future) and may be able to follow up. There wasn’t much to separate Square Du Roule and Ask Her Out at Exeter and both should be in the mix again off revised terms, providing they see out the longer trip, while Elusive Knight could be a very interesting handicap debutant tackling 3m for the first time.
